Reviews of Mamaku Station (RailCruising trips now start at 45 Ngongotaha Road)
S. T. W.
Both my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our Rail Cruising experience! The addition of a cup of tea (at half way point) in the ranch Yogi Bear was filmed in was really sweet! There is also the option to purchase an icecream at the turn around point, and blankets are provided on the cooler days.
The staff were also really lovely, thank you for having us!
R. M.
Great to have done this again. It's a definite improvement to start at Ngongotaha. Friendly & safety conscious staff. An excellent family outing.
B. G.
Rail cruising is a great way to see some new views around Rotorua. Self driving cars allow you to look around and really take in what is a unique experience. The ability to use your phone to take photos while also listening to some great pre-recorded commentary.
It does get cold on this trip; the team does provide blankets, but it is best to ensure you dress warm.
Great activity for couples or young families.
V. K.
Rotorua Railcruising is a fantastic experience that offers a unique way to see the beautiful scenery of Rotorua. Before you start your journey, you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or a hot drink, which is a great touch.
The self-drive part of the experience is quite unique. While the marketing might make it seem like you're driving the railcar yourself, you actually only use the hand brakes at the beginning and end of the trip. Even so, it's a fun and relaxing ride.
Gliding along the tracks, you get to take in some stunning views that you wouldn’t see from a car or bus. The whole trip is peaceful and easy, making it great for people of all ages. Overall, Rotorua Railcruising is a wonderful way to explore the area and enjoy a laid-back adventure.
Highly recommended!
E. S.
I loved the experience! The ride was comfy, scenic & beautiful! Fun experience! Jason was super helpful & patient when teaching me how to use the handbrake as a non driver! Didn't expect a hot drink to be provided on arrival... Highly recommended!!! 😊😊😊
J. B.
What an absolute unique experience! 😊🙃😃
Rotorua Rail Cruising is the only self drive electrical and diesel railway carts in the world 🌍 You just need to release the brakes and away you go at 20km/h
Groups of Rail Cars spaced well apart, travel 10km together in one direction from Mamaku Railway Station to Tarukenga Railway Station, where it is turned around for the journey back 🛤
The scenery of native bush and birds is just incredible! At some point you can see all the way to the Rotorua Lake 🏞
It gets quite cold in the denser wooded areas, but they do provide blankets 🥶
It was really a great way to see parts of Rotorua. The people are incredibly friendly, and it was a very comfortable ride 😊 Before the trip there is a bit of an induction and safety video over hot drinks ☕
R. W.
What a lovely experience. I would be happy and got my moneys worth with a 1 way trip. But got the bonus of a return trip.
C.
It’s a different experience and won’t be for everyone. Some nice scenery on the run looking out toward the city and lake. The rail cars are unique and a good way to spend an hour or so.
A. P.
My wife and I visited with our 6 month old and we had such a great experience. We didn’t know what to expect when we arrived but the staff were excellent and gave us all the info we needed. Our little one loved looking out the window and the commentary gave lots of great history. This is a truly unique activity and one to remember for a a long time. 100% recommended.
R. S.
10 of us went on this trip: a great journey through bush and rolling hills. Wonderful views of the lake. We left from the new station at Ngongotaha to the log cabin station at Mamaku and back again. Very little driver input needed so free to sit back and enjoy the scenery.
S. E.
A nice wee ride along the tracks that were restored with a lot of hard work by the owners with friends and family. Four people per car, which is a self driven operation with a handbrake. Nice enough scenery along the way. About a 15 minute break at the turn around point. The cars have side panels that can fold down if it rains. Good friendly staff.
S. S.
Really enjoyed the trip on the car. Having a ride all to yourself is a great experience.
J. A.
I enjoyed it because I love the sound of trains and getting lost in the scenery. It's a strait line from one station to another and goes 30 mins one way with a stop off while you wait for the other rail carts. (15-20 mins) Then you head back. History of the line and surrounding area is played in the cart. Staff were awesome. You need to book first, which you can do via their website.
P. L.
Tremendous, and easy.....beautiful scenery in natural scenic bush. Staff extremely friendly, efficient & helpful. Highly recommended for a couple of enjoyment.
B. M.
This was an excellent opportunity to gather information about the Mamaku area . Wonderful experience in these awesome rail cruise carts .. Well worth the money .
M. W.
We had a lot of fun as a family doing this. It was recommended to me by my dad when he visited NZ. Kids had fun and the scenery along the way was lovely. You jump off at the end when turning around, stretch your legs and jump back on to go back. It was a little long for the girls, but they didn’t complain too much. I loved that it was a unique experience and learning of the area and history.
M. C.
This was such a unique once in a lifetime experience, such a fun way to see the landscape of the area and also learn some Rotorua rail history. I definitely recommend doing this activity
L. L.
4.5 stars, booking required one car can fit 4 adults, need to mention early if using entertainment book, fun 90 minutes cruise on a railway with great scenery! RC03 speaker might need some adjustment can hardly hear the introduction on the driver seat othe than that pretty awesome experience.
W. L.
Rotorua Rail Cruising is a unique family friendly experience. Groups of Rail Cars travel 10km together in one direction from Mamaku Railway Station to Tarukenga Railway Station, where it is turned around for the journey back . The staff provided detailed instructions on how to operate the handbrake and the rest of the time, you just sit back and relax
J. M.
Never knew this wee place existed. But what a cool wee ride to do. The wee trains are electric powered and drive themselves, you just control the hand brake. Blankets are provided for the cooler days and the commentary is just great. So much knowledge about the tracks and how railcruising came along. I highly recommend this activity. If you are lucky you will even have rabbits racing you down the tracks.
J. B.
Great staff and location (ex movie set) but the ride itself is quite loud and bumpy. Interesting history of the rail line with average scenery.
L. F.
Well organised by really passionate people. Lovely scenery and very interesting information given via a loudspeaker. Possible for all ages and degrees of mobility. I wish them well.
K.
We decided to do this when it became wet. What a brilliant idea to use the old rail line. It was a fun afternoon rail cruising. We did have an issue with our chart when it become slow but the staff were on hold to help us out.
The station was also used in the 2009 movie Yogi Bear.
We loved the horn and enjoyed the countey scenery.
Recommended doing this fun activity.
R. H.
A fun afternoon, great staff and beautiful scenery winding through the eco system. Rail history was fantastic!
D. M.
A nice scenic cruise. The rail cars only go about 20kmh and are automatic/self driving, so if you're looking for an involved or exhilarating experience, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a relaxing activity with a nice view where you sit back and watch, this is worth doing.
C. H.
Very good and senic experience traveling the length of the railway. The staff were helpful in explaining the Rail cars worked and the safety aspects.
R. S.
Had a great time on the rail cruisers with my wife and friends on a recent trip to Rotorua. Definitely something to do if you're in the area - a unique experience to sit in the cruisers as they take you on a leisurely ride through the countryside. Really interesting to wind through the hills and follow the route that trains used to take! You feel completely detached from the rest of the world in your cruiser. Definitely recommend it!
S. H.
Rene is super friendly, fun and delivers awesome service.
S. H.
Great experience, especially the audio interpretation as you are travelling. There were children there on the day I travelled and they had a wonderful time.
P. S.
Great experience. Fantastic staff. Value for money. Travelling through native bush and farmlands unique.
G. B.
My wife and I did the full ride Ngongotaha to Mamakau Return $198.00 for to pensioners. The ride itself was pleasant al be it the seating a bit hard. Most 70 present of the journey is very. Mundane with good views of Rotorua 3 quarters of the way up. There is tea , coffee available at Mamakau station for free . Make sure you take warm clothing as a lot of the trip is in the shade of Trees or forest. . I commentary would be great to give you some insight to the line your travelling on. I give it a 7.5 out of 10 and as it’s a new venture I’m sure it can only get better.
R. J.
Great experience. You travel from Mamaku to just outside Rotorua, on a now disused NZR line.
You have your own rail cart which is driven at a sedate speed by an onboard computer.
You have control of the brake and horn, so you can stop the cart at anytime, if necessary.
A very interesting audio commentary is played in the cart explaining the history of the line and other points of interest.
I found it a great thing to do. Takes about 2 hours. Really enjoyed the trip.
l. m.
Cute ride with a self driving car along the rr track. Seats 4 & you get your own private car even if you're less. 2 blankets are in the car if it's chilly. Recorded narrative is nice but sometimes a little hard to hear if going over noisy part of track. It's a unique experience. My husband was a little bored. Bring picnic basket thi enjoy on the way for more fun. Employees are extremely nice. Reservations are suggested.
v. H.
Absolutely brilliant. Friendly staff. Good value. Would do it again once they have extended the rail tracks. You can even take your pet.
J. C.
Nice bush trip. Scenery is more bush .
Nice way to spend a couple of hours. History was interesting.
B. L.
Great self guided tour with the rail train! But it does get boring overtime for the kids and adults as it's 1.5 hrs.
A. C.
Super fun experience!
S. T.
Very enjoyable experience, it's like having your own private train to ride in with commentary provided. Highly recommend it.
T. Y.
This was our second visit in the past few years. This trip was as good as our first.
Very friendly welcome, the offer of tea and coffee was a bonus while waiting. The briefing was not drawn out and complicated. Instruction being the driver was good. The journey excellent. Well worth the cost. Fully recommend this activity in Rotorua.
One small suggestion could be the pro vision of headphones to hear the commentary. Clickety click some times drownsout the commentary.
C.
Lovely experience...definitely a must do...I hear September is lovely with the flowers in bloom. Staff is awesome. Great customer service.
A. R. K. R.
1. Only place where such facility seen.
Liked the experience travelling in a simple railcar.
2. Seats needs to be made more comfortable.
3. Sealing for cool breeze entering needs improvement.
J. O.
Renee was a wonderful host and is a credit to the business. If your any bit interested in trains or not this is a worth while experience. For my four year old it was the high light of his trip. A little expensive but this is probably the high running cost and maintenance of such a enterprise. You can get deals on bookme nz for certain times as we did.
H.
Excellent fun we really enjoyed it. Lovely team of people running the place - super friendly
M. H.
The staff are so friendly, we had a little issue with our booking but they fixed it straight away without any issues! I can’t quite remember both of their names but I think one was Shelly - they were both so so nice and should definitely get a pay rise ;)
The experience itself was great - it was very chill and the commentary with history throughout the ride was great and informative. It’s definitely an experience that I would recommend everyone do atleast once!
J. K.
Had a great time here. The staff are super friendly. Well worth a visit!!
L. L.
We had a great time trying something a little different. It was a cold rainy winter day, but hot beverages were provided as well as blankets in the rail car so we were cosy. Staff were friendly and professional, the tour informational, and the kids seemed to get a kick out of it.
O. T.
It's a good place to visit, it was hard to hear what was said from the speaker so a better audio system on the carts would be good to have for everyone, especially those who find it harder to hear, the staff here are kind, which is a positive thing
J. H.
Great introduction to railcruise options in NZ. Hosts we're very helpful and friendly. Return trip about 90 min max. Good photo opportunities from the rear seats.
C.
Had a lovely Sunday afternoon cruising thru sum of New Zealands countryside an at part of the track we cud see Lake Rotorua, def come back for anotha visit 🙂
B. S.
Well this was one big surprise! We found the attraction on a brochure rack and went for a drive to check out railcruising. We had the best afternoon trundling up and down the railway which had lots of commentary as well. The staff were super friendly. There's lots of safety procedures to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable afternoon.
L. R.
Nice cruisey activity, mostly views of Bush with a brief scenic view of the lake and hills. Has interesting facts about local railways throughout the cruise over the speaker (can be turned off)
In winter it's bitterly cold, wear warm clothing and bring a good jacket
K. S. R. T.
It was enjoyable with some humor as Fred the crazy 🐔 down the line loves to play chicken on the trek with no care in the world as we head straight for him 👀 the horn on board was handy and you do have a manual brake only if really necessary 👍dress warm and comfy in winter was a Lil chilly but fresh ' blankets on board were handy for legs.
S. G.
Me and my nephew went on this on Wednesday it was cool train ride takes about an hour but it was a bit cold as we did it early morning but apart from that it was all good and you listen to audio along the way to
L. P.
Excellent for adults, need to be able to get in and out of cars though. Can take kids, might be a bit boring though. We loved it!
T. F.
Really great experience. Was really nice to go on the rail cruise and learn the history of the area
J. M.
Awesome experience. Highly recommended. (Take a warm top)
S. B.
Great staff. Fantastic experience
D. C.
An absolutely wonderful and unique experience. The commentary was awesome with all the history of Mamaku. Thank you Sharise, you were a rockstar sorting all the carts. Not to be missed.
L. M. D. -. V. W.
Relaxed loved it...bit misty weather we had but was still an adventure
R. V. P.
Awesome setup in my opinion. The commentary enroute gives the history of the railway and area. Even if all rail cruisers are used for your selected booking, once underway it seems like you’re all alone. All weather activity.
S. P. J.
Unique self driving rail experience.
H.
A unique experience suitable for all ages. Beautiful scenery and very friendly staff. Definitely a worth while experience!
A. P.
Amazing experience, thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth the visit
A. H.
Beautiful, safe, serene. Took 2 kids (1 and 3 y/o) who enjoyed immensely!
C. M.
If you love the Bush you will like this. Can get very cold in the winter
S. M.
What a hidden gem. We heard about the railcruising from the TV program and enjoyed ever bit about it. The guide - Renee, was an excellent source of knowledge and shared a lot in interesting stories with us. I can recommend this to anyone who wants to do something different in Rotorua. Thanks Renee!!
M. B.
Such an Awesome experience. Thoroughly recommend, and enjoyed. Warm clothing is a must
But. please, if planning on doing this. Ensure you get there on time, so their timetable runs to plan and others are not inconvenienced 🥴😜
M. S.
Was really fun, is a really unique experience.
M. D.
Enjoyed our ride. Relaxing time for the family.
M. W.
It was something different, that was about the history of Rotorua and didn't matter that it was raining.
D. T.
Enjoyable experience. Alot safer than Bungy. Nice family or group outing. Renee, Hadyn and Jason were very helpful and friendly. Must bring the grandchildren next time. Finish off with an icecream from Mamaku Blue.
R. P.
An absolutely fabulous trip. Totally worth time and money.
J.
Awesome relaxing tour. Well worth.
H. A.
It is good me and my dad enjoyed it and I loved the free hot chocolate and Marshmallows
S. R.
Full 1 hr 30 m ride through the forest. The landscape was a good view. Not much animals to see on the way except sheep and cattles(you can see it anywhere in NZ roadside). Too pricey(250 NZD) for a single cruise which accommodates 4 adults and a kid. Kids were provided with soundproof headpieces because of the cruise. A demo was shown prior to the ride.
P.
Different way to see some NZ countryside. Good activity for a wet day too.
D. P.
Great experience, very friendly and helpful staff. A bit pricey even though we used a discount through Bookme. Found it to be quite loud but ear plugs are provided. Good views and the audio playback provides some history and information about the business and area.
s.
Great service, great safety brief, well organized but overpriced for what it is. Gets a bit boring after 40 min too. Just some constructive feedback for you guys, would be good if speakers could be adjusted in away that we can actually hear without the noise of the car going along the tracks.
C. C.
What a unique experience. I loved it, rambling down the mountain was very enjoyable with rich flaura and fauna, good commentary and so nice to be amongst nature and a pretty part of the country
S. W.
Great experience. Excellent customer service. Highly recommend.
J. T.
Was looking to see the landscape while not really having to drive, was a very enjoyable experience. I did expect to see a little more than we did see as much of the track runs through dense trees and rock walls, but best the end when it opens up and you get s Rotorua lake, it was worth the journey. A little pricey for what it is, but the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Excellent experience.
R. B.
Fantastic even on a misty day
K. J.
Had a great experience doing this for the first time. Loved the concept . Rail cars were nice and clean . Great customer service by the lady at the reception. The commentary was not audible due to the sound of the car . Would like to see more attractions added along the route. Overall a great experience and would definitely recommend it.
J. M.
What a great idea to use old railroad track for a scenic tour. We found it very relaxing and fun, and the scenery & wildlife were a treat. The recorded commentary was nice (although we couldn't hear all of it owing to the railway noise). Highly recommended, and well worth the price. The staff person was friendly and welcoming, too.
J. W.
Very cool little self-drive cars that take you along a 10km stretch of rail. Great views and interesting commentary during the ride. You can get off at the other end for a stretch if you wish.
The ride is about 1/2 hour each way and you are taught how to use the hand brake for stopping as well as other safety briefings.
I took my 3 kids along (5, 4 & 4) and they enjoyed the trip. My middle child was getting sleepy thanks to the drone of the engine and clacking of the tracks. So if you have a tired toddler who won't sleep, try this!
Overall, a cool little activity that takes about 1.5hrs. We'll definitley do it again!
T. G.
Would recommend if you had not done this before. Sit in a mini train that takes 4. Travel in uni direction for 30 mins, and then turn back to return to point of origin. Unique experience.
M. C.
Lovely fun experience. A great new idea. Good way to see the countryside in the comfort of these railcars. All Weather cars as we needed them as it poured with rain. Would be 5 stars if the journey was with a bit more open countryside but obviously you have to go where the rails go and a bit more audio commentary would be good but overall a great fun experience and highly recommended.
S.
Great scenic train ride, fits four adults comfortable. Great being in your own small train. Comentry through speaker system was good , history about the people, the land and when the railway opened. Definitely worth the money. Staff were friendly and professional. They are looking at extending the rail line. I will definitely go back and do it again. Partner and I had a lot of fun.
L. H.
A unique experience but not something you would do again. Self drive is an overstatement as you only take the brake off.. Scenery is average... In car audio is a nice touch...
W. G.
Enjoyed it a family with the 2 year old who had fun but unless you're fascinated by trains or rail history it's just a bit of a time filler. Some nice sections through the bush and would love to have been able to stop and explore a bit. Amazing log cabin offices which have been beautifully built.
S. V.
Great and unquie experience.
J. C.
This is a unique experience and a good family adventure. Great views of Lake Rotorua and the countryside along the journey. Be sure to wrap up warm, as can be chilly even on a sunny day. The onboard commentary points out some interesting facts and history of this old Rotorua branch line. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
S. W.
Great little adventure, hubby enjoyed the horn like a big kid. Awesome information very comfortable
L. V.
We loved this! Was good informative fun
S. A.
We really enjoyed our trip on the Railcruiser and seeing the lovely views and Bush fauna. But the price was a bit to high for what it offered compared to other ones with a lot more activities, longer rides and refreshments for the same price.
M. A.
Our family of four really enjoyed this peaceful ride. The scenery and calmness of the ride was a great touch on our otherwise busy and loud day
A. T.
Leisurely cruise as far as the track goes.
Beautiful views and a knowledgable audio guide.
Friendly and helpful staff.
If you're looking for an exhilarating rush, perhaps this activity isn't your cup of tea.
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey!
S. S.
Something different to do. For the price, if you got spare cash and want to do something different, give it a go!
s. A.
This was an amazing experience.highly recommended to you. Kids friendly as well
M. T.
An excellent trip for all ages. Goes way faster then expected, really cool. Wonderful native forest with native wildlife in abundance. Very professionally run, safety a high priority.
A. B.
My wife and I really enjoyed the relaxing and scenic ride on the old railway track. It’s a unique experience travelling in the cruisers through bush in some parts and open country close to animals in other parts. Great scenery and friendly, helpful staff. Highly recommended.
W. Y.
Friendly staff. Exciting journey. Brilliant for kids
E. H.
For the train enthusiasts or just wanting something a little different. Fantastic for those with mobility problems, very little walking. What a great idea. Really enjoyed it. Thanks
L. C.
A pleasant rail trip with local history thrown in. The station has its own history as it was used in the making of the Yogi Bear movie and was transported to this site. Real redwood and has that forest smell.
Staff friendly and informed.
F. S.
On a fairly dull day with a few scattered showers, two of us rolled up to the Mamaku Station .. and what a lovely greeting from Jaimie even tho we were a bit late for the safety briefing. We got into our little cruiser and off we went .. what a delightful way to see the countryside and to hear about how the track was rescued and restored. So on a bright sunny day it would be fantastic, but really the weather wouldn't matter that much as it's such a fun thing to do .. I'd recommend it to one and all.
N. V.
Great experience. Was really nice to go on the rail cruise and learn the history of the area
G. T.
Awsum time but it's very loud hard to hear commentary. Would suggest ear cuffs for little ones
l. p.
A lovely experience. Great for families, especially those with younger children. No skill required to drive carts. It's all done for with a commentary.
P. J.
A real new experience for a couple of 74 year Olds. A lot of time, money and effort has gone into this tourist attraction. Well worth the money and effort to date. Look forward to coming back in the near future to assess the progress. Keep going guys you are on a winner. Chitty chatty kiwi staff a real bonus.
R. F.
Absolutely brilliant experience. Staff are terrific. Excellent commentary on board. So much history packed into a comparatively small geographical area. Stunning scenery.
H. G.
Me and my friend loved it, takes about 2 hours in total and you see beautiful scenery.
c. g.
Very cool thing to do. Learning the history of the rail back in its day to the present era and reconstruction of the rail by the rail cruise team makes the journey more educational. Add to that the scenery along the way, makes this trip a must do on your tour of Rotorua.
A. P.
Wow wow wow. What a professionaly run attraction. Peoples safety was number 1 but done in a happy and calm way. Being a world first for this kind of experience this needs to be put out there just how awesome it is. Native Bush, birdsong awesome scenery just you in a automous railway buggy with an automated informing commentary that was both factual and interesting and 19km of unobstructed rail line whats not to enjoy
D. K.
Great experience. Something you've never done before we can guarantee it
L. R.
Something different and a great way to see some of the countryside. A novel concept and great fun. Everone was so friendly and we had a good laugh
i. r.
Relaxing and unique experience, great for the kids and great for adults who appreciate this kind of thing.
The operators are looking to extend the track so would definitely go again next time I’m back in NZ from over the ditch in Aus.
M. L.
Great journey. great staff!
J. S.
Good alternative activity for tourists
D. &. S.
Excellent fun and well done to all the people involved for restoring the track,we went on a wet day which is fine because they cover you in, so don't let the weather deter you, all the staff are very friendly as well, which made for a very nice experience.
G. B.
A great experience that takes you by rail through a variety of scenery with some fantastic views. A really enjoyable trip that lasts longer than expected and provides great value for money. Highly recommended.
S. B.
Good senic trip in self drive rail cart. Something a little different. Great views.
G. M.
My husband and father in law are huge train fanatics and this experience was something different. Rachel who was in charge, went above and beyond in helping with my elderly father in law. Nothing was a problem and Rachel made the experience better.
T. D.
Unique experience, beautiful scenery
A. A.
Absolutely great experience, staff were informative and really friendly.
J. T.
Another trip worth while, although a little damp due to rain it was still informative and well worth the money. Recommend to all visitors to put on their to do list.
S. W.
Great family adventure
A. a. H. B.
A fantastic trip with the kids in tow. They absolutely loved it. Would recommend it to anyone looking for something to do as a family rain hail or shine.
M. T. R.
Very good experience with my kids.
X. J.
very good mountain view and kids are very enjoy the sleeping time, so me and my wife can finally enjoy our privacy talk
J. T.
Auto drive neat experience and Jason was really helpful
T. v. d. M.
Had a lovely experience at the Railcruising with my mum and a friend. The lady at the reception was very friendly and helpful and the commentary along the way was very informative.
N.
It was a unique experience, great for the family, not much to see in terms of the scenery, just farmland and trees, it is also very noisy throughout the ride
t. t.
This was just awesome
Throughly enjoyed the journey
A must do for all ages
Our instructor can't remember her name was just fab a great laugh, she was the icing on the cake
We will be back thank you
K. H.
Nice and relaxing comentry was good the lady's running it were fantastic good times had.
A. K.
I did this trip as a 'Guinea pig' when it was first up and running. It is a great trip down the cuttings on the old rail track with local animals,in case you haven't seen sheep or cows close up. Ideal for either wet or dry viewing. Take note that the address is wrong and there is no photo of the station. Address is Mauku St Mamaku.
P. S.
Found this rail journey by chance today and what a fantastic operation - the guide was very welcoming and friendly - thoroughly enjoyed our time there and pass on to all this is a 'must do' experience!!
M. L.
Great fun. I highly recommend checking out Railcruising if you're in Rotorua. Excellent commentary, great views and friendly staff. A total hidden gem. Check it out!
E. J.
We loved it, fantastic experience
