Reviews of Russell Museum
A.
Was very impressed with the presentation. Wonderful collection of history. Fabulous stories. Very friendly helpful staff. The replica of Endeavour is awesome, I can't believe a guy built it in 12 weeks.
M.
Very friendly staff and very informative. Their video changed my views on Maori and the settlers. Life changing!
T.
Historic film can be seen here.
A model for ancient ship, some valuable stones, big and small paddles with a large boat. There is a souvenir shop.
A.
Incredible. Really neat to see NZ history where it was made. Also some other really cool stuff like sharks, and moas and 7kg crayfish, and more 😊
J.
Easily the coolest place in town today. Also, the exhibits were quite extensive and informative. Great value!
T.
Lovely little museum to the history of Russell and the local region with lots of things to see and loads of interesting information. It's not every day you get to climb inside a cauldron once used to cook humans! Great little gift shop too.
D.
Small but very interesting museum. Good information on history of Russell.
M.
The museum is small but is jam packed with artifacts from around the area and showcases Russell's contributions to New Zealand early history and the part the area played in the formation of the nation. I'd say the $10 admission is worth it
J.
A nice little museum, not much more to say than that. Russell itself is a gem.
R.
Very interesting to learn that Maori people are also immigrants to New Zealand. So why do they think the land is theirs? Surely it belongs to all who live here. Yes I'm happy for them to be the care takers, and we can all support them with that.
S.
A good small collection of local artefacts. The replica Endeavour was impressive.
J.
This is a small but informative museum providing a clear picture of the town's unique and fascinating history.
w.
Plenty of history. Some may debate whether it's worth the admission ($10 per adult), but protecting heritage isn't free, and the 1/5th size replica of Endeavour is amazing.
J.
Small museum with lots of exhbits and info on Russell's whaling history. Loved the interactive story. Entrance is $10 per adult and kids go free. Photography isn't alloeed inside.
R.
Cheap educational activity. Great for a rainy day. Lots of early Maori and Settler history for kids.
F.
a verre nice museum, special for children. Friendly people and a lot of local history.
V.
Not too big, but with the necessary information to know about Maori culture and also the first encounters with the English. They usually have different exhibitions as well, but unfortunately wasn't ready by the day I did my visit.
Also there is a shop where you can get not just souvenirs but also books.
C.
There were plenty of items that were unique and pertinent to the Bay of Islands and the early British-Maori relationships.
We overstayed at the end of the day by 20 minutes but were not forced to curtail our visit. We really appreciated this kindness.
D.
Worth a look if you have traveled its a good stop in to learn about the history of the area .
$10.00 to look inside the museum.
A gift store with books magazines and postcards to purchase.
Also outside the gardens interesting history.
A.
A small local museum with friendly staff members. Filled with local history. You'll find the gift and souvenir shop next to the museum entrance. If you like the art works inside the museum, you can contact the cashier to purchase them. There's a small parking area next to the museum.
A.
I visited this place nearly 20 years ago and I took my kids here for a visit this year and they enjoyed it. It's small, has a very soft and warm history about it and well maintained and cared historical museum of the locals. Enjoyed reading of the local schools' stories of their personalised flags. We will visit it again at another time.
H.
Cute little museum. They do so much for such a small sized premises and learnt a lot more about NZ history in the 15minutes I was there compared to my year in NZ
E.
If you are not interested in NZ history, then keep your $10 for a nice coffee and ice cream down the road. No marvels here.
But if you are into history then don't miss this one. It gives a good starting point and it will link-up the stories with the other places you visit in NZ.
Oh, there is a 1:5 replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour which worth a look.
Note: sorry, can't take photos in the museum, otherwise would show you the ship.
R.
Beautiful museum. Gives a real close feel of days gone by
R.
Many stories about this town and history by some modern equipment. Much better than I was originally expected. Worth to go visit when you go to Russell.
D.
Surprisingly good museum in charming Russell. Took the ferry over from Paihia, and escaped a sudden rain downpour here. Small building, but quite informative about the history of this small town.
R.
Incredible history here! History lovers delight.
R.
Small but delightful museum with some very amazing exhibits, including a 1/5 scale model of the endeavor. Lovely!
J.
Worth a visit. But $10 admission fee is a bit steep for a museum of this size in my opinion.
S.
Russell is a funny old place, steeped in history. Just across from Pahia where the treaty was signed that meant the birth of New Zealand as a nation. Russell has a history of whaling and Maori culture, missionaries and early settlers. There is also a big replica of one of Cook's ships. A nice way to learn a bit more about the history of the area and of New Zealand as a whole.
H.
Haven’t been there since my last visit to Russell back in 2017 but it is a nice little museum showcasing the history of what was known as the “hell hole of the pacific” back in the day.
R.
Beautiful venue with so much history in a little space. I recommend walking around the exhibits outside the building too.
M.
A must visit place, get to understand the history here. Wish this museum can get more funding to expand.
C.
I like museums and old places with maritime history, so my opinion may be biased in favour of this little museum. I didn't have much time here, will have to check it out again next time.
T.
Small but authentic. Gives a great overview and explanation of this very special region. A couple of small interactive activities for kids. Could spend up to an hour there.
M.
It is small museum but with nice local exposition and interactive 3D projection about history of Bay of Islands.
B.
Interesting, but after the fascinating history brought to life at Pompallier House the museum was a bit of a let down - Pompallier House was a hard act to follow, to be fair.
J.
Better than advertised. Good collection of local artifacts.
D.
Truly modern experience, displays and audio visual , happy I visited
J.
Great place to learn a bit of history of the area and wow there is a lot of history packed into this small town being the first trading post for outsiders in Aotearoa.
J.
It's a museum befitting of the town of Russell. It's small and quaint and has a few gems of local history. Go visit and help support the local history.

Fantastic Museum and well worth the visit. Very friendly lady greeted us and we learned a lot about the early days of Russell Kororāreka once inside. Good video to watch while seated as a start and lots of historical items. We spent about one hour there, great if the weather was not good also. Parking near and free. Nice gift shop. Recommended if you have the time!
F.

(Translated) Super recommended to know the history of Russell and understand much of the history of New Zealand itself.
The museum is small, but it shows very interesting things. The explanatory video is very good, although it would help if it had subtitles even in English to follow what they say.
Very good.
