Reviews of Wilkies Pools
D. T.
Lovely walking track. It says 1 hour 20 minutes for the loop but it’s probably 45 minutes at a steady pace.
Lovely mesh for people just to get to the falls. If you do the full loop it turns into a standard type track.
Lovely spot. Generally well sheltered.
B. N.
Easy 30 minute walk to the pools. There are several pools but you have to scramble up some rocks to reach them. Nice cool refreshing water.
A. R.
A must do if you are in Taranaki. Only a 40 min car ride from New Plymouth and a40 minute round trip from the Dawson Falls Car Park. You get a stunning jungle walk, followed by beautiful natural pools filled with clear, ice cold glacial water. If it’s a hot day jump in, and then warm up on the rocks. The water is very very cold, so be prepared. But it’s worth it. The feeling of invigoration is incredible. Highly recommended, especially jumping in from the top rocks. The pools are very deep!!!!

One of the best hikes I’ve done! The walk to the pools was moderate walking, a little bit up hill but not difficult. The nature all around you makes the hike worth it the whole way. The pools itself and the waterfall is so picturesque. Doing the whole loop might be a bit hard if it’s raining as it can get a bit wet and slippery. Highly recommend 🍃

An absolutely beautiful hike out to see this small waterfall and pools.
The suspension bridge was pretty amazing to see and to walk across.
The trail is well developed and easy to walk, and well marked. It does not take long to reach the pools from the parking area. The full loop is about 2.4 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) so it isn’t too strenuous.
In warmer weather, soaking in the small pools is definitely an option, so consider wearing your bathing suit. The rocks can be very slippery, so wear some sort of beach or wading shoes and be careful.
Be sure to add this loop walk to your “must do” list in Egmont National Park

Beautiful gentle walk to an awesome hang out spot with a daring waterslide for the keen ones.
A. V.
Very relaxed hike, I would recommend water shoes! A lot more comfortable walking through the streams that are on the way, and you will be able to stand in the pools and enjoy the fresh cold mountain water without having to walk over pebbles and rocks. Go on a nice and sunny day, it won‘t take much longer than an hour and a half or so and is perfect for people that don’t want to do one of the big hikes around Mt Taranaki.

Fantastic easy bush walk but impassable about 3/4 of the way around due to a raging torrent over slippery rocks, there needs to be a little bridge.
R. S.
Great walk. Wasn't too hard to walk up to the big plateau. Nice track and good views. I think we walked it about 20 mins faster than the sign
S. M.
The entire walk is great, under the cover of the Forrest and pass by some streams and waterfalls. Rocks climbing up can be a bit slippery in places.
T. T.
Fun, easy walk.

Beautiful day for a challenging hike. Dawson falls to Matekawa hut in under 8 hours. Will be back soon.

S. M.
Nice place for a dip a bit cold tho
B. R.
Great little walks all around the mountain. Lots of nice little areas to see.
Some of the trails are very effected by how much rain has happened recently.
Even a couple places where we had to jump over some streams.
highly recommended if you love a nice nature walk.
J. R.
Beautiful! A pleasant walk along a well maintained walkway. Steep-ish in places, but suitable for capable children. After crossing the swing bridge, the walk is a little more technical, with river crossings etc, but very, very enjoyable.

Was awsome definitely a must do in taranaki.

Awesome family adventure
40 minutes from the car park
Not a bad gradient for younger family members that need to get out of the vehicle and burn some energy
Easy track to follow and some great photo opportunities
C. M.
Beautiful walk with some scrambling to see the further up pools
Z.
Good track surface with slight uphill. Great place to take kids. Pushchair/wheelchair friendly right up until 10m from the pools.

A great week with the opportunity to take a dip in the pools when you get there
J. H.
Beautiful area, recommended a swim there after a hike further up the mountain

Well worth the walk. One track is supposedly wheel chair friendly, it is a high quality track. I'd come back on the loop track if possible, different and interesting as well.
K. P.
Lovely easy access walk.

Thought for the day.
You may drink the water and say this is pure but you don't know who's peeing upstream of you.
C. S.
Stunning scenery, was awesome to see and a very short walk.

Park at Dawson’s Falls and start the easy climb up to Wilkies Pools a lovely walk on a well maintained path, if you carry on up the path gets a bit more ‘rustic’ still no worries, keep going until you reach Stratford Plateau (where there is a carpark, reached from other side). Enjoy! 🤠👍🏻

Beautiful track easily handled with kids with some majestic scenery. Pools themselves are amazing too, just watch your footing as rocks are very smooth at the pools

Awesome little nook on Mt Taranaki, about 35-45mons walk from the main car park, nature's own water slide.. Great fun if your keen on icey cold fresh beautiful water.. I would suggest parking at Dawsons Falls information area as this way is easier than the way we went to the main ski field car park lol. Enjoy.
N. A.
Perfect place! We came there and didn't expect a lot but spent more then an hour and a half there. The water is freezing but absolutely worth it!
B. T.
Really nice walk. 1.9km loop track . The track goes all the way to Willie's pools on a boardwalk thing. They have upgraded it a lot since o was younger. The best entrance is through the Dawson's falls part. Just invade google tries to lead you through Stratford.
K. F.
Great easy walk with awesome views and sights
L. v. G.
Fantastic walk to here, up cascading mini waterfalls with crystal clear water. Views are great too. Magic in both summer and winter. Climbing up the rocks is also fun.
J. a. M. v. A.
Easy walk and lovely views. Beautiful mossy trees twisted and interesting. Saw some brave pre-teens jump into the icy pools. Fun day out.
B. H.
Beautiful spot on a hot day for a icy dip. Wheelchair/pushchair track to the bridge to view the pools
J. L.
After seeing Dawson Falls, unfortunately Wilkies Pools fail to surprise or impress us. The walk was relaxing and peaceful though, especially if you love the green.
T. G.
Lovely place to visit, lots of steep steps but worth the walk.
P. B.
Nicevwalk through cool climate forest to basalt pools. The river is meltwater so watch somone else go swiming. The walk continues from here to the plateau.

(Translated) If you go through New Plymouth a visit to Mount Egmond is essential. For lovers of hiking it is an ideal place for many hikes of all levels. The Wilkies Pools are not the hardest. You will walk in a tropical vegetation, with majestic trees covered with exuberant moss, Sometimes acrobatic when large trunks are found in the middle of the path and water courses more or less filled following the precipitation. In the background you will Mount Egmond that if you feel like it you can climb at your leisure. To access it by the road you will cross a splendid forest but attention to the narrowness of the road and to the tight turns.
