Reviews of Labyrinth Rocks
W.
Unique place near the Takaka Town Centre. Small car park around the corner of the entrance. The place is huge and I would think you need at least 1 hour here to check out all the marked areas to explore. We only managed to get through 20% of it, as it was getting dark.
W.
This attraction was funnier than expected! This natural scenery is surprising! Don't do a detour for that, but if you are close to it, this is a must do. On top of that, this is free and the parking is free as well.
L.
Eeeerie and quiet. The tree covering adds to the experience. The rock formations are incredible and the child like figurines add a spooky Ness. Great for a spooky location for a film. Also visit on a really hot day as it is nice and cool from the tree covering.
C.
It's a natural maze and the kids loved darting around through the rocks and natural little tunnels. It was good on a hot day as it is nice and cool and shaded.
L.
Very interesting place! It's beautiful, whimsical and a bit spooky too.
I.
I absolutely loved this place. It's magical. Perfect for kids and adults alike. A must do if you're in the area, and worth a good drive just to visit, as well.
R.
The hidden toys are a nice touch and our kids (3 and 4 years old) loved it. Grove Scenic reserve close by is more impressive though.
J.
Really interesting rock forms are the highlight of this stop. It's a nice short walk that is self-guided by the short brochures available at the entrance sign.
The portable toilet was an excellent and well-maintained model.
We saw a variety of birds and a whole family is fantails.
Hidden areas, tunnels, and an area called the maze were favorites. Small toys and bones hidden throughout make it more interesting to entice younger children to continue.
A fun little stop!
J.
Nice spot. Be sure to grab a map before you enter as this helps with exploring. It’s a shame that the walk is scattered with so many small plastic toys, not a great look when walking through the forest
J.
Interesting meandering trail through the rock formation.
B.
Amazing formations to get lost in. Would make a great area for a treasure hunt for children. One place that is dog friendly.
S.
We stumbled upon this place by accident but ended up spending an hour or so wandering around here. Some really neat rock formations and labyrinth-like paths. The friends of the labyrinth have done a fantastic job keeping the paths maintained.
B.
Parts of the rocks seem to be inaccessible at the moment but it was still a good place to visit with our daughter.
But be careful! Although you won't get "lost", the map is a little vague and not to scale. You will get a bit turned around but you'll never be far from finding your way out.
Well worth the visit with children.
W.
The word labyrinth is generally synonymous with maze and this place certainly lives up to its name. Amazing limestone formations.
M.
Loved it. Do not go before sundown unless you have torches. We started to freak a little when it was getting darker...but we found our way out with 10 minutes of daylight left...whew
N.
Very cool but random place that leaves you wondering how it was created, Walked right around the whole place in just over an hour. Be a good flat walk if you have children with you as there is no where the could seriously hurt themselves. Also very quiet
B.
A cool area to explore. It's a bit hit and miss as to whether you'll end up at a dead end and have to back track but that's all part of the experience. Some interesting rock formations.
M.
The most fun ride of the day! perfect for taking a child, but keep an eye on them!
A.
A fun place to take not only the kids but the whole family. Well worth a look
N.
Pretty cool labyrinth made of natural forming rock! Lots of people place the toys for kids to discover
H.
Kids to entertain in the holidays? Or to escape summer heat? Or both? Explore the labyrinth trails, find a seat and let the kids get lost. You can enjoy those Christmas chocolates without sharing . . .
S.
Neat place to take the family. Easy to get lost though with all the paths so make sure there is some way of contacting each other if seperated.
J.
A fun place to take children as well as adults. Made by nature and maintained beautifully without disrupting the nature of it.
S.
Great to see the rock formations and great place to get lost.
P.
An amazing walk throu the labyrint nuturally formed by a rock formation. The keepers of the natural maze also offer you to find some "status" using you imagination.
V.
Excellent wee spot to visit, quite unique! Would be a great spot to bring kids!
M.
Highly underrated spot, beautiful lime stones, it's a great place to spend your afternoon and walk trough the labyrinth. Well kept by the community✌️👍🇦🇺
R.
The BEST non-beach attraction in Golden Bay, especially if you're got children. Just make sure you bring out the same number that you take in.
V.
Really interesting rocks set within a bush area. Felt other worldly, a must visit.
E.
Everyone should visit labrynth rocks. We were lucky, nobody else there. Would make a great movie set
C.
It's actually quite fun to search for the marked points on the map! Needs a bit of imagination.. Walk was easy, ard 45 mins to explore
B.
A special place, decorated with all sorts of curios left by past visitors, but not sure if this adds or detracts from the natural wonder. The limestone formations are intricate, each twist and turn takes you to something new and interesting. Don't expect a guide through this spot, it's all very low key, which helps add to the sense of mystery!
D.
Had great fun, crawling in and out of the labyrinth rocks... awesome 👍
E.
What a great way to get out of the sun and have a wander. You could spend an hour or two there or 15 min.
J.
Cool little place, great story behind it, a British man discovered the amazing rock formations and cleared all the weeds away.
There is a free map to guide you around which is a bit of fun trying to follow and find things.
They also have loads of little kids toys (like McDonald's ones) hiding throughout, the kids loved finding and rehiding them. Great place to bring a whole bunch of small toys after a clear out.
m.
A magical place to visit, with something to look at, at every turn. All age groups. But kids would just love it.
N.
Really cool rock formations. Such a magical place for kids to play and run around.
G.
One of the most enchanting lovely places I've visited... .an I only found it as I was doing my recycling an it was right next door....the toys an trinkets hidden all around the place make it even more magical...love It!!!
M.
Cool rocks, massive areas to explore and great that it is free. Gets a bit repetitive after a while.
T.
Loved it, kids enjoyed the mystical creatures placed every here and there.
M.
Hidden Gem! Was enjoyed by young and old. Amazing rock formations and so much to explore. Would recommend heading to the end of the track first and working back towards the entrance. Kids really enjoyed the tunnels right at the back of the area.
D.
Unique, even to a New Zealander who's been around all of NZ. Free, but donations accepted for improvements by a volunteer group looking after the place. We took 90 minutes to explore. Some muddy parts, you need to watch your footing & have sturdy shoes. Not wheelchair friendly or suitable for those with mobility issues. Small car park. You need to take a map with you! They are available at the start of the track. The map could do with improving as we often weren't sure we were looking at the correct thing. Some discrete signs would help too. Great bush walk in any case.
B.
A labyrinth of rock formations to walk through and discover different things. Try to find all toys...
F.
Fun for the kids. Quite a unique place. Only problem is it's next to a rubbish dump.
S.
Natural, great landscape of ferns, marble and prehistoric looking rocks. Peaceful place
R.
An interesting Limestone rock walk walkway, shaped by the weather..
N.
We have been coming to the Bay for decades and have always wondered what the Labyrinth Rocks were all about.
Fantastic place to visit. Wear shoes and be prepared in some places to pretend your a hobbit.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
How did we miss this ?
J.
Fun rock labyrinth that you can walk in 30min. Grab a map at the entry to find the different rocks
W.
It was a unique experience making our way through the labyrinth, and encountering little toys, placed at every nook and counter of the walk. We were in awe of the British explorer who first discovered these rocks, and meticulously carved a walk way from a once desolate and uninviting landscape . It just goes to show the endless potential of human grit and determination.
k.
Really interesting place and great for youg and old and free .Made it a bit of fun by leaving small toys for the littlies to find
W.
Would be great for kids. However I found all the hidden toys very tacky. Little kids would love it though.
D.
Beautiful spot, well maintained. Friendly staff.
H.
Interesting rock formation. It’s quite nice to explore the labyrinth.
A.
Amazing place to walk with kids!
L.
Very easy walk and fun for children.
L.
I really liked my time getting lost in the labyrinth with all it's corners and sidewalks to explore...
With some good weather and time, you can really get some nice pictures and most importantly sweet time with finding the many figures, beautiful rock formations and plants.
Just could have been a bit more cleared out on the paths, but for a great time and free entry one can't complain at all! Thanks to the friends of the Labyrinth for caring for the place and enabling us to enjoy it.
O.
Weirdly cool and fascinating
H.
Fascinating, definitely worth a look. Lots to explore.
L.
Interesting short walkway. Recomend take a map on the board near the entrance. You can find and see some unique shape stones with the map. One thing is not very big enough car park space if it's busy.
O.
Really loved exploring this maze of natural limestone rocks even though we are a middle-aged couple and had no children with us. Toys seem to be randomly donated/placed by children but it would be great if someone spent a bit of time to theme each area with relevant plastic toys permanently placed. The material toys looked dirty and out of place.
M.
Big and little kids just loved this. Highly recommended
A.
Great place to vist
P.
Brilliant little park near Takaka. The rock formations are amazing and it's fun to roam around in what really is a maze or labyrinth of paths. There is a map available I think at the iCentre but we just took a photo of the map at the entrance and used that. We used it to find all the named structures and it was quite cool trying to locate them all. There's little toys scattered about as well which I imagine would make this fin for kids too.
Q.
Cool karst formation that's free to visit. Information brochure can be found at the start of the track (alongside a longdroo toilet). It's quite a big area to cover with some interestingly named rock formations you can locate with the help of the brochure.
J.
Cool place to explore with children or adults! Don't miss these features marked on the map available at the start of the tracks "The maze" and "Octopus alley"
T.
Not bad...close to takaka
C.
Great place to explore with children.
M.
Great place. Much bigger than expected
T.
Pretty cool place with wee tunnels would be a great place to take kids if you want too lose them for a while 😀 and the best part was it didn't cost a thing...
I.
A fun place to explore, especially with kids as there lots of little toys etc hidden amongst the rocks alongside the tracks.
B.
Interesting attraction formed by water running through limestone. The 'labyrinth' is not one you will get lost in as it is quite simple and maps are provided. The paths get thin in some places, and a couple of spots require ducking down and kinda crawling. The site is maintained by volunteers so if you feel like it, bring some change to put in a donation box. Small toys are placed around the rocks to entertain small kids.
D.
Nice 👍
P.
Lots of alley ways and rock formations that are interesting to think how they would have formed millions of years ago. make sure you take a map from the start to find out where you are. there are lots of little plastic characters spread out around the rocks and the children just love running around to find them....for more interesting than rocks.
A.
Unique and interesting place to explore. Great for a family outing. Make sure you grab a map at the entrance so you know what is in there.
L.
I suggest that you take at least 30 minutes to do it. We had a lot of fun in there! The rocks formation was incredible! :D
K.
It's an interesting walk within a natural labyrinthine sort of open rock system. Don't go if you're afraid of spiders or tight spaces, do go if you like natural curiosities or looking for the unexpected.
C.
A most excellent suprise, educational fun, magical spot.
Perfect to entertain the kids...just keep an eye not to get lost
G.
Cool rock formations and pretty maze-like at one end. Interesting, but not exactly a 'must see' as you get the ideal of the place quite quickly.
z.
Amazing place to spend time. During hot day give you shadow and rest. Really nice labyrinth between amazing rocks.
S.
It was cool I'll go again next time I'm back. If you liked Indiana Jones the movie you'll love walking through the labyrinth Rocks
J.
Fascinating little place, lots of small toys left around...I guess from children that have been eaten by the labyrinth MONSTER!!
R.
Very interesting, lots of Dead ends.
G.
Very interesting. Unbelievable rock formations
L.
Nice short experience, fun for kids and old kids
D.
Great and interesting place to see unusual rock formations. It's really amazing to se the different shapes the rocks have here. It's not far from Takaka and it's free to go inside so I'll totally recomend it, you can see the whole place in 30 minutes.
P.
Pretty cool place really. Maps to use would be an idea. Few closed tracks. Toys being left are cool. Overall it's a good place to go with kids
P.
Quite pretty but badly overgrown. You should be able to see the rocks but being badly overgrown they are hidden. All previous tree cuttings are jammed down crevasses and not out of sight. It's a shame
R.
Unusual. Possibly unique. A labyrinth through and in limestone outcrop. Strange shapes and shadows. Larger and more confusing than I thought it would be. Well worth a visit if you're in Takaka
R.
Beautiful natural rock formations and lush forest. We weren't fans of the little toys, but they didn't detract from the natural beauty of this special place. Definitely worth a visit.
W.
Quick 15 min visit. Excellent for the kids to find all the wee toys hidden toys.
H.
Incredible rock formations. There are many little toys hidden around, which together with the natural and easy labyrinth that the rocks form make it a great entertainment for the younger ones.
A.
Odd rock formations, kids would enjoy this
G.
Great place for kids and adults who are young at heart. Allow 10 to 30 minutes. Easy walking.
G.
Very interesting place to visit. It might take at least 1 hour to get through all the labyrinth. Even though it is worthwhile to visit, it might be guite hard for some tourists to find the place as it is not very well advertised. I am highly recommending the place.
J.
Amazing .good fun. Easy walking. Lits wee toys to find hidden for the kids to find
A.
Great place to let the kids run off some energy and play hide and seek .Can be slippery after rain.
M.
Natural rock labyrinth. Easy walk around some amazing rock formations and vegetation. Didnt think we could get lost, but we did. Fun finding our way back out.
