Reviews of Craters of the Moon
L.
Entry is really cheap only $8 for an adult (can get half price voucher for a morning section by bookme) Great way to spend an hour or so. The main track is flat and there's no rush to get around it. The roaring holes on hill are accessible too. The field is active so it's not a boring walk. the steaming holes and outlook view are super for photos. Would definitely be going back.
J.
Educational, and unique dramatic scenery... you must visit!
Well worth the small fee for entry. Visit on an overcast day to enjoy the steam vents even more!
T.
A good opportunity to see geothermal activity for a small price. Entry was $8 each and at a relaxed pace we spent 2 hours walking around the park and reading all of the info-signs explaining crater formation, fumeroles, and various flora and fauna found in the area. It was an overcast day which was nice as it kept temperatures down a bit. In a couple of areas you can feel the heat rising out of the ground which was pretty cool. Well worth a visit.
C.
Great way to spend an hour or so. The main track is super accessible and there's no rush to get around it. Entry is really cheap and the little gift shop is pretty decent. The track is well maintained as well. The field is super active so it's not a boring walk and for those that care the Sulphur smell is not super strong even when directly in steam. Would definitely be going back.
G.
Awesome and very informative signs walking round, walk takes about 60 mins. Some scary areas where you can actually hear bubbling underground...great place for adults and kids.👍
H.
Despite of being cold and raining weather it still was interesting walking, taken a bit more than 1hour. Not many visitors, no crowd, ( thanks to the quarantine🙈🙄).
A.
great path between steams and smoke columns. Take a round there was an interesting experience.
A.
Great stop over to stretch legs and see the surreal geothermal landscape. Well maintained. I stop by every few years with overseas visitors and they always enjoy it. Not an overly-pricey tourist trap. Great place
C.
Nice place to explore. Its family friendly. There are toilets which are handy. You can take a buggy or pram in the main track but the optional upper track has stairs.
There are ice creams for sale which can be a good reward for the kids (and adults) at the end.
E.
A great experience if you want to see many geothermals craters. We did the free parking in Rotorua but this was way more enjoyable. Worth the $8 (would easily have spent double that)
A.
Wonderful park to take a walk around. Well maintained tracks, mostly board walks, and lovely little gift shop. Take a jacket, it gets cold on the open areas!
R.
This is a lovely and easy walk that's fantastic value for money. It's worth taking the additional upper walkway for the views, as on a clear day Mt Ruhapeu is clearly visible.
R.
A little different from the usual volcanic attraction as it's more steam vent. Still interest and cheap for an hour and a half's activity.
L.
Such an amazing landscape. Lovely walk, if you take the time you see the bubbling mud, hear the steam under pressure and there are billows of steam in many places.
J.
Really nice walk. Takes 45 min to an hour. Toilets at start but other then that nothing till you make it to finish. Gravel track and boardwalks with only optional steps to get closer. Ok
S.
Great early morning visit. Arrived at opening with the kids and had the place entirely to ourselves for most of it. Didn't see a soul until 3/4's of the way through. Truly magical place with all the steam, mud and views. Great time for the kids to have total freedom withing the paths and walkways.
F.
Amazing and breathtaking. The pathway is a wooden plank -way, very sturdy and safe. Everything gets explained and the entrance fee (8$) is super cheap for this amazing experience. The souvenir shop is very adorable too and they have those fun coin-machines, too! So make sure you bring a 2$ coin to remember your visit - although what you see there is already memorable!
A.
What an out of world experience!
Reasonable entry fees, good location and lovely staff. I was wondering if they could start a guided tour? Not sure if they already have one. Good learning for kids and adults too. Spend an hour or two. Enjoy your proximity to the middle earth 🤪
M.
Was a great walk! Wasn’t busy and felt like we had the entire park to ourselves. Well recommended as a cheaper attraction.
M.
We had an amazing time walking around the Craters, it so peaceful there & much too cheap to go in!!!
H.
Great walk with heaps of geothermal activity, definitely worth the small entry fee. Highly recommend for everyone, especially those with with 5-12 year old kids as the steam etc is really fascinating. Wear your walking shoes and bring a water bottle!
J.
Nice short walk between steaming vents. Great educational experience both for kids and grown ups. Second time visit was as good as the first.
L.
Good leisurely walk, great views of Taupo township and Mt Tuhara with extended views of the mountains if taking the loop track. Sign posted with information, well worth the visit 😀
M.
This attraction coasts 8NZ$ for adults. It is definetly worth it for a one hour walk through the craters. We were able to see them and the smoke streams from near distance. Great experience, would recommend.💪🏻
C.
What a very unique experience. A very relaxed walk with the family. Nothing to rush you and just natural wonder. The walk is about an hour and there is a extra loop track for a scenic lookout or if you want a bit more exercise. A very beautiful area of the country.
V.
Superb experience. Though I been to White island but these experience was different I meant the land with multiple craters of hot water. Wherever you go you will find hot steam coming out and the noise of boiling water.
D.
Better than I was expecting, I didn't know it was $8 but worth it. It takes about 45 min to walk around, many photo and video opportunities, lots of cool thermal activity. Safe place but take care, there's plenty of hot steam
S.
A little bit underwhelming 🙈 but the track was well maintained and had lots of information provided on sign posts.
L.
The upside is, this place is relatively inexpensive to visit at $8/person compared with all the other attractions.
Overall, interesting if you haven't seen anything like this before. Walkway is a loop, by the time you hit the halfway mark, you've probably felt like you've seen it all between the thermal areas and mud pools.
I would skip the extra hike for the scenic view from above. It was underwhelming, nothing you didn't already appreciate from below.
B.
Really enjoyed the Craters of the Moon, hour long walk, slightly longer if you take the detour to lookout, path is gravel or boardwalk and is stroller/pushchair friendly. Sure there are bigger geysers in Rotorua but they are not as affordable and are often busy, Craters is a good balance. $8 per adult. Pro tip: go after it’s been raining and don’t go on a super hot summer day as the path has little shade and can get rather hot! A must do if you are in Taupō
B.
This is really worth the $8 entry fee, which goes to providing volunteers who keep an eye on the car park and provide security. If you have limited time to see the volcanic activity is New Zealand and want to see some action then this is the one I suggest.
The park is well set out and there are lots of craters showing thermal activity and some steam fissures. There is a new lookout which has great activity and it’s worth taking the top lookout for a view of the surrounding area.
There is a small shop with ice cream and souvenirs. Allow about 90 mins.
J.
So fun on a cold winter day. Some of the steam holes are close enough to the walkway that you can hold your hands over and feel how hot the air comes out. I think it would even be more steamy in the winter than in the summer making it nicer to walk around in.
C.
Its $8 for an adult to get in and the walk doesnt take very long at all, you can take it at a more leisurely strole but we went around in about 25mins. We managed to see the recent activity area which was very cool to witness. Masses of power blasting through this reasonably small hole, when the steam hits you its like being in a spa and then the cool breeze is quite refreshing. Be careful going back down the hill, its quite steep. There are toilets at the shop but sadly no cafe, im sure i saw a sign for coffee but that was it. Shame there isnt a tiny cafe for just tea and cake. A good little jaunt around was worth it.
A.
No big fuss as advertised but if you're into thermal adventures then you might find it fun. Around 45 minutes to one hour walk around thermal and mud pools or craters. Good place to kill some time if you're visiting Taupo. Ticket is $8 per person with a shop if you'd like to buy some stuff. Coffee is cheap too
T.
A fun and interesting hike. Not hard at all! We made it with our 2 year-old daughter and she was fascinated (she walked through one part and then she sat in her stroller and we pushed). There is almost no smell to sulphur, unless you get in the way of the fumes or stand close to a crater or mud pool.
Definitely a must to come see this marvelous wonder.
An eco-friendly detail: they do not provide tickets! Instead, you get a stamp on your hand. Great implementation in these times!
S.
A great place to visit and witness the steam from the earth. It's a good stretch of walk. $8 per adult for the entrance and we walk through marked walkways and most of them are wooden pathways and beautiful placed. We had a great experience visiting this place and might go back with friends in the future.
A.
Really enjoyed this walk with the family, great experience and very educational for the grandson
S.
Staff suggested it was a gentle walk and that my elderly mother would be fine if we took our time around the 2.5km or so track , but after 500m and many near stumbles she turned back (despite being advised that the track was one way and busy, we could barely see anyone else in the park and she was able to make her way back to a seat while we traversed the rest of the park). Some cool bits, definitely worth $8 if you are mobile enough to deal with uneven boards and sloped sections.
n.
Wonderfull place , but don't forget your hat or preferably an umbrella if you are going on sunny time.
Around 45 min walk.
J.
For 8 dollars per entry, it is definitely worth it to stop by. The walk itself will take around 40 minutes(or more if you soak it in).
Uniquely, the site has minimal sulphuric smell as to its counterparts in Rotorua.
The park will close at 5.30pm.
R.
Lovely place, nice easy walk (there is a more challenging part of you wish to do it taking you to a summit). It is a little warmer here due to the geothermal activity. Recommend taking a little water bottle with you. Takes you about an hour.
A.
Really cool experience. Tickets were cheap and the walk takes anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on the track you choose. These attractions don't have the nasty smell that the ones in Rotorua have which will be a blessing for some
F.
This place is a value for money tourist attraction. We took our lunch and picniced after having a walk through. Kids enjoyed exploring the thermal pockets etc and thought it was great fun! Don't think I will visit a second time but this is a good, cheap family attraction. Duration maybe 1 hour depending if you take the lookout track :)
S.
Very cool place, a nice lookout and enjoyable walk. The staff were nice as well. We really enjoyed our time here.
C.
Impressive landscape with steam coming out of the ground. You walk right in between the different craters and steam vents.
The name chosen for this place is somewhat confusing after visiting it. At no point I felt like seeing a lunar landscape (compared to it's namesake in Idaho, USA).
Still worth the visit for just 8$.
T.
A fun morning out - managed to get there nice and early before the crowds on a weekday so basically had it all to ourselves. Not the sort of place you’d go twice to, but certainly a place you enjoy visiting once!
A.
Definitely not blow your mind thermal area but for once it was reasonably priced and a really nice walk! Would recommend if you’re not wanting to pay $40+ to see some boiling mud and water
N.
Been here several times and always enjoy coming back and seeing the improvements.
Staff are wonderful and helpful. The amenities are clean and the tracks well maintained. People in wheelchairs or with prams can do the full loop (minus the lookout which has steps).
It's not an explosive thermal zone; however, it's a soothing meander around craters of varying sizes - from massive sink holes roaring their fumes to small holes the size of your arm, all enclosed by the hardy, low lying shrubbery.
The low entry price just adds to its allure. (I wish they were all this price!)
Highly recommend!
a.
It’s a geothermal walk nice to sweat 😓 .Well instructed boards every where very informative.Staff is very welcoming very economical too $8 for adults.
S.
Craters of the Moon is a unique experience. It is like heathland that has hot springs in them. Some of the springs are so hot they are bubbling and there was lots of steam coming off them. A very enjoyable experience.
K.
a good place just a hop away from the Huka Falls. Ideal for someone with a time constraint. 1 hour round walk through a moderately exciting thermal area.
L.
Lovely park with geothermal activity.
It's nothing compared to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, yet it's still fun to do the small loop and see more of nature's "oddities".
S.
Nice walk along the path for about an hour with views of steam coming out of the underground. Quite exciting for kids.
D.
Interesting place. Saw a lot of couples so I guess its a good dating spot. If you’re not into such stuff, they all look about the same and not very interesting. Not a must go but good experience to look around. Not a lot of information boards and signages to read and learn more.
D.
A great walk through a thermally active area. No geysers but well formed walkways mostly on boardwalks. The landscape is mostly covered in brush and low plants, with mud pools dotted around. Entry charge is modest.
A.
Lovely walk. Great views good hour walk. 4$ for an adult. Well worth it. Toilets and gift shop as well.
c.
Take lots of water to drink and clothes that won't make you over heat... also wear sunscreen if visiting on a hot sunny day. Enjoyable experience.
N.
The ticket price is very decent compared to other places. A very easy walk so can finish the entire walk quite quick. It’s quite pretty but doesn’t have the massive geysers or mud pools compared to other places
C.
Beautiful hotzone just out of town near Taupo. I walked here after venturing to Huka Falls which was only a short stroll away (using the mountain bike path). If I recall, entry was 7 NZD which granted you access into the geothermal park. The park itself consisted of one boardwalk-style walking path looping around the perimeter of the area and talking you by the bigger craters and sulfur pits. I enjoyed seeing the natural wonders but will admit that the pungent sulfur scent got to me. Rotten eggs anyone?? I'm only giving this three stars because it's fairly small and, compared to Rotorua and Wai-o-taupo just up the road an hour, Craters of the Moon is simple.
D.
$20 for the whole family 2 adults 3kids great price to view such a stunning place. Take water with you if it's a hot day the walk will take about a hour. The gift shop is very good prices not a Rip off. The staff are great love to talk and give advice. What a great place to visit a must see.
a.
Nice easy walk through interesting active volcanic steam vents, craters, boiling mud pots and adapted vegetation. Inexpensive and informative. Optional steep hike up to a cool overlook.
G.
First time experience with a role of assisting a Tokoroa North School outing of 4 students they had good behavior the weather was prestine and it was amazing to learn alongside as well as show the students transformation of mother earth (Papatuanuku) why n how we need to take care of her for all that she gives in return is plentiful
A.
$8 entry, $20 for a family. Reasonably priced gift shop attached as well as toilets. Board walk and viewing platforms are kept in good working order and have information panels. Longer walk was great and well worth it. Could probably see similar elsewhere for free so if you're a local maybe give it a miss. If you haven't grown up with this sort of thing, then it is definitely worthwhile.
J.
A great casual walk through some of NZ's more interesting terrain.
D.
Wonderful attraction, throughly enjoyed it, awesome customer service, highly recommended 👌
A.
This is my different experience in New Zealand l love this place and recommend to go others also
M.
Amazing place! I couldn't believe what I was looking at! It's also bigger than I thought. It will take you an hour to see everything and be careful with the time since in winter they close at 4:30 or 5 pm
J.
It is a really nice 1 hour walk. We were there in summer and we definitely want to go back in winter.
J.
Nice place. Good weather for it. Was rainy and could see everything then the sun came out and. Well. It was amazing
N.
Payment of a small entrance fee allows you to walk through a broadwalk over geothermal springs. Amazing sights along the path
J.
Quite a good exposure to steams and volcanic mud pools with an entrance fee of $8. Suggests that the bushes at the lookout points should be trimmed for a better view. Nicely built walkways to go around the area.
A.
There is not much to see in this place but has a nice walk for 45 minutes and view around. Fee is minimal and not much to do. They do have camping area and parking spot for camping vehicles.
J.
Awesome place.
Nicely peaceful walk with plenty of action.
Probably the best 8 bucks spent in New Zealand.. Hahaha. Definitely worth a visit.
z.
Weather was not good when we went. Raining heavily. Otherwise will be very nice. Ticket price is reasonable but the sales person was not too friendly.
D.
Liked the leisurely walk. Most of it was all the same visuals. Good understanding of the power of our planet we walk on every day.
R.
Reasonable prices for such a beautiful place. We loved easy 45 minutes walk through the geothermal mud pools.
M.
I recommend an early morning walk out here, if in summer. We did a late afternoon and it was extremely warm. Crazy how much steam is omitted from the geothermal pits. Educational walk and well worth the low admittance fee.
R.
Car parking is free and it costs 8nzd per person to get in. It takes about 1 hour to get around walking in a slow pace and taking pictures.
Its a very nice place and exclusive views from the craters with the vapor emissions around.
S.
Great place to visit. Nice on a frosty winter day.
C.
Interesting walk around the steam hills! A pleasant extra climb to look out! over the site, a gift shop and coffee if required, takes about an hour all in, good for kids, as they can enjoy boardwalks without getting lost!
W.
The staff are very friendly and helpful thankyou to Hayley. We were impressed with the walk around the craters, nice and quiet while were there.Would recommend a visit.
T.
Find some holes in the ground with steam coming out, add a catchy name and you have a tourist attraction. But there's acres of Manuka plants and honey bees gathering pollen for honey.
R.
Takes about 1hour to walk around the tracks they have which are well maintained. Small entry cost of about $8-12 per person
K.
Need about 1 hours to walk a circle in the park. The park is well maintained and the staffs are friendly. Worth a visit here!
T.
Awesome place to have an hour walk in the Craters of the Moon. The entry price is reasonable, $20 for family with max 4kids.
S.
The geothermal activity here is quite interesting. It is a smaller park, and the walking trail takes about 20 minutes, with an additional uphill climb option that offers views of the mountains in the distance- but they are VERY much in the distance. I was interested to see the many native divaricating plant species and mosses that survive in this harsh environment. Overall this privately operated park is something I would only do again if I was traveling the area at a very leisurely pace. In hindsight I would've skipped this place and spent more time at Lake Taupo and saved the geothermal activity for Rotorua.
M.
Nice short walk. A bit different from Rotorua, with plant varieties actually growing in the area which was interesting to see. Don't miss the short walk to the view , very nice if there's no clounds around. You can see the lake, Taupo and the area. Price is decent as well.
N.
Great walk. Definitely recommend the extra 15min detour. Great views
H.
Great value, affordable attraction for the family. Even the surly preteen took an interest and enjoyed what nature can offer.
H.
Easy to find off the thermal highway and with plentiful parking, Craters of the the moon is must visit place.
Whilst we went on a hot, dry day it meant all the mud pools were dry and not bubbling, you could still hear them under the surface of the earth, incredible.
Steaming jetting out quite loudly in some areas was fabulous.
The wooden walk ways are easy to navigate and the standard walk takes about 30 - 45 min casual walk stopping every so often to read an information sign or take a photo. Well worth the $8.
M.
Very unique and interesting place to explore. Managed to get around in 45min with a toddler.
A.
Very accessible for families with toddlers. Bit of a long walk so bring your carrier or an off-road pram. Seriously consider doing the route backwards for anyone with a mobility concern because best views are near the end of the lower track within 5-10 mins of the exit at toddler walking speed. If you can handle walking or wheeling off road on fine hard packed gravel 10-20 mins this is still a great place worth visiting. Remember the toilets are beside the entrance/exit. It takes a good 30-45 mins around with fast moving toddlers. Special needs discounts YAY! Very friendly staff. Plenty of photo opportunities and space to be alone even when busy. Keep your kids quite close, wear covered shoes & stay on the paths. Even under the boardwalks hot steam will burn feet and curious fingers through the cracks. Great spot for a romantic stroll and families!
F.
Again such a special place, not super spectacular, but fascinating of what's happening under us. Nice walk, take something for a picnic and enjoy.
L.
Great place to spend your 1 hour in taupo. In winters try to visit this place around 4-4.30 you’ll get some mean sunset pictures.
M.
Had a great afternoon here.
Lots of parking and a nice shop.
Good walking tracks and lookout platforms and staff let us know the tracks and walking times so we could make decisions based on how long we had available.
D.
Often cited as a value for money place to go; I felt it was just ok. There was plenty of good information on the boards, well maintained boardwalk and plenty of geothermal activity but nothing spectacular in my opinion. It is definitely half the price of many of the other places, but I didn't see anything that was out of the world. That said, it does match up to the name, and many of the formations are something to be appreciated. Go if you have time (and some money..$18?)to spare or can't afford wai-o-tapu, for example.
R.
Very cool to see. Would advise to go on a hot and rainy day. Really makes steam stand out more for misty movie effects ;)
H.
Beautiful, especially when you get proposed to 💍 🌲 will forever remember this place 😍
J.
Interesting location with numerous large bubbling mud pools and steaming geothermal pools (warning it naturally smells really bad of sulphur)
Walk along the raised path looking into the deep crevices of the moon craters or go for an areial view on the 15 minute walk up the hill to look over the plains of steam. After there is a nice giftshop and toilet facilities.
I enjoyed the time I was there (about a 30-40min walk plus the extra 15 up the hill) but was disappointed in customer service, they seemed to be a little rude. Overall it was interesting but would not recommend spending much more time than an hour. (Don't forget to ask for local discounts if you are from Taupo)
S.
A nice walk on a fine day. Cost is quite high for what is is. Something you only need to do every few years.
J.
Awsome walk amongst the thermal vents ,take enough water it's hot out there
B.
Nice people freindly attraction, allow upto an hour for hour visit.
J.
Great walk, got some amazing photos
W.
Memorable sulfur plumes in a great setting. Not a challenging walk as you follow the paths.
M.
Great family outing with an easy walk. So much fun and the mud pools are pretty cool!
D.
Some folks commenting seem to have ludicrously high expectations. Visit if you want a low cost experience of some wonderful natural forces of nature. The folks running it are beyond helpful too. Also, it's a lovely little walk
Avoid if you're a cynical douche who is constantly underwhelmed by all the things in life.
s.
A must see natural beauty. The trek is small and the view is worth the walk.
N.
Excellent addition to the geothermal knowledge of this beautiful country. Easy hours walk,at own pace. Good shop and helpful staff.
D.
A good 45 minute walk for the main walk. My group came through on a wet day and it was still fairly impressive. A few of the board walk sections could have had a bit more traction grip on them, but overall it was a decent experience. $8 per adult makes it not too expensive, although if you have friends who don't like walking they may take a bit of convincing to fork out anything for the experience. Definitely a good thing to check out if you have some spare time in the area (we drove down from our accommodation in Mangakino).
A.
Very interesting, must see place in Taupo. The track from start to end will take at least one hour so keep this in mind when you head for this place. I would suggest to take drinking water with yourselves.
S.
Very lovely walk and totally worth the price. Super mystical place. The board walks are nice and wide and it's all well sign posted with good explanations of what's going on.
C.
Wow - so well worth the visit and so reasonably priced! For a whole family of four it was only 28 dollars!
Great to see the landscape and get fit at the same time!
M.
Reasonably priced interesting place to visit. Understand if it hasn't rained in a while there could be little to no steam.
P.
Really enjoyed low key natural park ... pleasant walk ... respecting nature and her power
B.
Not bad value for a touristy activity, nice walk not a lot to see though
A.
Nice little adventure. It's a shame that they don't let people bike around anymore. Worth the trip
G.
Nice easy walk around many steaming craters. If it's a clear day do take the extra lookout loop, the view is well worth the kids complaining ;-). Good little gift shop with icecream and friendly staff.
N.
Very good, well worth the money and the ladies in the gift shop and the gentleman at reception were super friendly, the walk is lovely and the experience is great
S.
Reasonable price. Tracks done nicely. Good place to take the family. Beautiful site.
M.
Good for a walk. Beautiful view of path from lookout track. Okay to do one in life time.
J.
As we do not have geisers in my country, I was really looking forward to visit this one, and they do not let you down. Amazing!!!
J.
Super smelly but really awesome to learn about and see geothermal activity!
k.
Nice walk. Natures gift. A must do activity
J.
Spent a good hour walking around the peaceful setting. Steam and bubbling pools, with a winding track through it.
L.
Nice light flat walk but also a look out you can walk up to (not far up). Is interesting to read about what you are seeing and it is something a bit different. well priced for what it is.
k.
Awesome outdoor adventure for my 7 Yr old.. She enjoyed it
D.
Nice place. Really get a feeing of craters of the moon with green pastures and smoke.
B.
Nice place, I enjoyed walking there ,plus a nice warm weather
K.
beautiful area, will go back again in winter, helpful staff with a smile ☺ thanks so much 💜 💐
M.
Its great wouldn't recommend in a hot day after a period of little to no rain. Its extremely warm with little shade as you walk round. Some stunning up close vents though! Bring lots of cold water and comfortable shoes!
M.
Awesome views, nice walking track, bring sunscreen
G.
very gentle craters there with good view. Cheap tickets.
L.
One of my favourite thermal areas to visit. Very much a self-guided walk, but easy to manage for all ages. The boardwalks keep you on track, with plenty of steam holes very close by. Inexpensive, and makes for a good family activity. Keep hydrated - there is no shade, and little shelter to be had in inclement weather.
M.
I don't think the place is as touristy as other areas. We just came across it and decided to stop by. The entry is not expensive. I think if you are around the area is a nice place to visit.
W.
Nice place for a short walk, it was raining but it was still enjoyable! :)
P.
Awesome place. A must visit if you are near Taupo.
R.
Good walk and watch surrounding.. Early morning with bit of light and clear sky is the best time to see the beautiful craters of the Moon. Worth spending.. Probably you will feel like you are on the moon 😊
N.
Awesome walk through the area. Plenty to look at and see. Awesome features.
D.
Really cool natural wonder, highly recommended a walk through, small admission fee I think $8 for an adult so definitely fair, I would have given 5 stars if the lady working at the desk was not so rude, they did not have any toilet facilities open for customers and they were closed because they were getting cleaned, however we were told not to wait as they wont be opening them for us in quite a patronizing and rude way, with a very long walk and drive ahead that was really annoying and the attitude was upsetting, they could have offered the staff toilet. Other then the staff there that day it was a good experience
A.
Family entry is only $20.
Good walking distance for young family.
Better go there cloudy day, otherwise too hot for summertime.
A.
Reasonably priced, charming, great alternative to the pricey Te Puia. You can get a good hr walk out of it if you take your time.
b.
$20 for a family $8 for an adult. I hour easy walk for all ages.
B.
Awesome experience....
A.
I've been here many times, the best season for it is definitely winter as the hot pots warm you up along the trail. The staff is always friendly and it is always beautiful.
G.
A must do! Very cool 😎 very hot 🔥
B.
Great to have a walk around. Lots of interesting flora and steam vents.
A.
Interesting walk, but if you are looking for more thermal activity, probably best heading to Rotorua, 50 mins drive away
F.
Fantastic thermal walk takes 45 minutes and takes you through a steaming craterous wonderland. Well worth the outing, very easy walk and great for kids...
G.
Great place to visit. Knew nothing about this place till we got there and with the name craters of the moon thought it might be a bit of a side show. But the opposite very interesting apparently they are all volunteers you see the result of vulcanic action from below the surface. It's 8 Dollars to get in but well worth it.
n.
Beautiful walk and scenic experience. Just a short drive from Taupo.
L.
This place is amazing. You have to see it ro believe it.
J.
This walk is totally worth the small fee. This is a very impressive park with countless geysers, craters and walks through natives. There’s steam rising everywhere you look & it is a very interesting sight not seen every day. It is a nearly fully boarded roughly 40min- 1hr. We had a pram which was great the whole way, until we had to carry it down some stairs after the lookout track through the bush, which was optional but well worth it. Recommend this 100%!
A.
The craters of the moon is a volcanic phenomena. It’s nice to see with a hour of walk through the park.
A.
Must visit place if you are in Taupo
F.
Cool(!) place - hard to imagine it had a break-out just 18 years ago
J.
very nice. its smells a little bit. but thats its nature.
A.
Nothing like the name but good semi warm walk.
M.
Fascinating walk for people of all ages. Must do activity in the Taupo region.
J.
$8 for adult. A walk to see the power of nature.
A.
Very interesting ....but dissapointed to see how people throw their trash in the craters
K.
This is one of the more inexpensive activities in NZ. Driving hours from Auckland to here was most definitely not worth it.
S.
Nice view, not much more on offer than the track, and a little Souvenir shop.. Go elsewhere for a snack. Better offering down the road...
M.
Nice different experience, with a great view.
P.
Amazing place, such a pleasure to come and see the beautiful sights and experience the warmth of the place. Definitely a must do.
A.
Mother dear beloved mother Eaeth is Amazing! Incredible! A breathgiving place! :) .
R.
Nice walk, friendly staff, nice environment. Worth the $8 entry fee.
S.
Cheap fantastic family outing. Drink plenty of water (but be able to hold it in for at least 45 mins as no toilets until end) and lots of sunscreen. Wear sports shoes as can be mildly challenging at times but very very easy walk.
A.
Nice walking park with thermal all around
R.
Outstanding, natural landscape with the natural steam from the Earth. It's a 1 hour walk around the place that covers all the place where the steam comes from and ticket costs $8 per adult, they also have the family packages, it's for $20. Its Amazing.
R.
Fantastic geothermal Park. You have to see it to believe the atmosphere!
T.
Interesting place to visit to learn and see clouds of steam and other geothermal activity. Its about a 45 minure walk. But you can do it at your own pace. Walkway is very well laid out with important signs very well placed. There are even sitting benches all over so you can have a rest. The walk is very well worth it after you witness the view on top. Bring some water if you need too. The place has toilets and good amout of parking space. The shop has a lot of souvenirs and variety of ice creams available too. Its a good site to visit but I think once would be enough.
H.
This region called Craters of the Moon, which emerged with its extraterrestrial atmosphere when the nearby power plant dropped groundwater in the 1950s, is located in the Taupo Volcanic Belt. Bubbling mud, clouds of steam and plants that can adapt to soil temperatures that can reach up to 90°C can be seen in the region.
S.
Amazing scenery! Definitly worth to visit
K.
What a cool place! Loads of steam and an awesome walk and view all around. Would definitely recommend!
L.
More interesting than what I initially thought when I started the trail. It's a great way to stretch legs on a long trip. Staff were very friendly and facitities were neat and clean. Very interesting to watch craters and easy peasy walking trail with a more complicated detour option. Worth a visit :)
J.
Cool, eerie and kind of post apocalyptic. Absolutely loved it and one of the highlights of the area for me!
R.
A 60-90 minutes walk around the loop. Definitely worth to visit
D.
Very beautiful and serene aside from the geysers if you get close enough. If I'm honest, a little underwhelming as I expected there to be more stuff to do but it's just a walk. Not a bad thing as long as your expectations are reasonable and to be fair $8 entrance should have been a give away. Don't get me wrong, still a good experience
J.
Very friendly staff and expanse of geothermal features, better value I think than similar attractions in the area
L.
Costs very little and a very nice walk around the steam vents, a chilled out walk; if looking at bubbling mud is your thing, then craters of the moon delivers.
k.
Friendly helpful staff. Good to view on colder days so you get to see the steam. No real spectacular singular parts just a good overall experience at a cheap price. We used a wheel chair and only found two areas where it wasn't good luckily my wife could walk those parts. Maybe something they could work on but no big deal for us. Definetly recommended.
A.
This place was just absolutely incredible, it really made you feel like you were on an other planet. A must see!!
P.
Beautiful walks! Take your time strolling through the beautiful landscape and the constant steam clouds.
T.
Cheap, fun for all ages! Easy walk around a thermal wonderland. Keep an eye on little ones though because they could run off the path and onto dangerous land. It’s a very easy exposed walk (take hats, sunblock and water in summer) stroller friendly. There isn’t a whole lot of parking during the busy season but it’s a cheap as chips activity so definitely worth finding yourself a park even if you have to walk an extra 100m.
W.
Easy walk for all ages.
A.
I was rather impressed with this enterprise, excuse the pun. Mainly that it doesn't exploit either the tourist or the local NZer's. This is our land after all. The cost of only $8.00 for an adult was the right price for what you see. They weren't asking more just because they can. Also impressed with the prices in the gift shop. Cheap enough that you buy two or three things. Smart. Then ultimately they get more income. To top it off I have to praise the staff for excellent customer service. Warm, smiling and you feel they want you there. The personal touch. Walking around you had the feeling you could be on the moon. Buggy and wheelchair accessible. Great job staff and management. You have it spot on.
T.
Great walk. Awesome staff. Will maintained park, gardens and lawns.
R.
Would've liked to go to both long and short walks but informed to only go one way for 'health and safety' - which, I found to be bs. Otherwise absolute must do.
K.
It is an amazing place to see geothermal activity below the surface. It will take around 1.5 hours to explore each corner of this place. Don't forget to explore loop of scenic look out of this area will take an extra 15 minutes come at before an exit of trip which give you an spectacular top view of this big ground with far mountains in background. Many people don't go there as get tired at the end. But, it's good to take some amazing full picture of this place from top. At Mud water place you can hear hissing sound of water and activity beneath surface.
D.
This was really cool! First time there, walkways are really well designed , lots of beautiful craters
E.
Great short easy walk, nice gift shop.
J.
Great small walk esp if you love a boardwalk!
B.
Felt that it could have something more spectacular. It does give me additional reason to visit.
B.
Our family of 5 really enjoyed our visit here. First time for our kids 8, 8 & 4yo. $20 for a family is fair value for 2A and up to 4 kids. Allow about 45m-1 hour. Volunteer run.
A.
It's very cool. There were lots of interesting mud craters. It's quite a long walk around, but easy enough. The experience is unique and amazing. Friendly staff. Good facilities.
m.
Very low admission price which was nice 4 once, staff friendly amazing natural steam vents from the earth and craters which was a real phenomenon! Pitty some D heads put rubbish in craters though..
P.
What a fun hike. Not too hard. Not too easy. The steam coming out were not the smelly kind. No sulphur content perhaps. Overlooking view is a must. Nature is so amazing. Good job Taupo for preserving this beauty for all to see.
One more thing. So far, I think they have the best souvenir shop. I have never been to one that had so much great choices for souvenirs. Awesome. That’s a plus. 🙂
G.
Good place for a short walk.
Y.
It is a beautiful place that reminds us of the might of Mother Earth. Definitely worth visiting when you are in Taupo. Make sure you stick to the designated paths, take a hat, a bottle of water and sunglasses. Even on a cool day, it might get a bit warm so wearing a short sleeve top with a jacket on top that you can remove is a good idea. Toilets are available on the premises once you pay and you go through the doors to start your walk. Ample parking for cars and caravans.
A.
Nice easy walk. We went on a rainy summer day and the steam was rising everywhere. The craters are incredible, steamy and noisy. Not much mud though. But really enjoyed the 45 min walk. Great price and friendly staff.
S.
Great walk. Very interesting.
C.
Nice walk between the vents.
l.
Well laid out walkways and boardwalks across geothermal fumeoles and steaming vents especially after heavy rain. Volcanic rock with a covering of stunted Kanuka trees and unique vegetation provide a great experience for the whole family .On hot sunny days wear sunscreen and hats and take water. The gift shop is well provisioned including refreshing ice cream. Very reasonable entry and local discount. Highly recommend when in Taupo
V.
Wana feel gliding through clouds? Come to this place and have fun for about an hour worth walk through the clouds.
J.
Fascinating experience. Our children were spell bound.
H.
We took a very enjoyable walk around this eerie landscape which is lovingly maintained by volunteers, and has a low ticket price compared to any other attraction we visited in NZ. It may not be as spectacular as some of the other thermal sites in the area, but it is delightful nonetheless. Well worth an hour or more of your time.
C.
Good value for money! Awesome walk takes about an hour. Definitely a good place to take the kids for a run.
W.
Cheap entrance. Short walk track. Excellent scenery.
Lots of small thermal area.
G.
I remember a long time ago when this was just a dirt path through a gap at the side of the road. Yes, about 50 years ago!! They have since developed it with a boardwalk but it is still very basic compared to places like Wai o Tapu.
It is much cheaper and a nice walk on a sunny day. There are viewing platforms and a couple of places with mud and steam but mostly it is low vegetation and steam coming out of the ground.
M.
Very informative. A good steady walk for 1.5 kms. Recommend it if you have never been.
S.
$8 adult admission is quite good as others around are more expensive.
You need good walking shoes as it is about an hour to walk the entire course. That is to take in all the views and go up the top. Anyone into history of the land and geysers will enjoy. There is a great boardwalk so wheelchair and pushchair access is easy. Up top there are steps though.
Great views of Taupo up top too.
S.
Great affordable geothermal walk. Awesome views of the craters.
P.
Lovely walk around a really strange landscape - with steam rising seemingly at random from fissures.
F.
Nice easy interesting walk if you have an hour to fill in. $20 per family of 4. Lots of steam jets and the odd bubbling pool of mud.
T.
Nice place to go. $8 for adults (As of Feb 2019). Mostly steam based geothermal activity you will see. Takes an hour or so to complete the whole loop. There is a lookout detour which is relatively steep for be careful. Worth going to as it is only about a 10 minute drive from Taupo central!
O.
A good place to see in Taupo. Nice walk for the $8
S.
Amazing to see the earth steam, even in the pouring rain! As the walk was a bit long we got offered a buggie to use for our 2year old daughter. Small thing but made our walk so much easier.
C.
Very cool place for a walk
K.
A nice little stop to see some geothermal activity up close. A very easy walk (except for the additional walk you could take which was a little steep). Smell wasn’t too bad compared to some other geothermal locations. The price is hard to beat as well. The signage around the walk was also interesting and helpful.
P.
Quite an interesting site to see a thermal area, quite tidy and we'll run. Worth the NZ$8 to get in. The receptionist said it was a 45 minute walk plus an optional 15 minute section with a steep climb to a viewing site, but you can do it faster (or slower I suppose) as I did as I had walked from Huka Falls. I don't recommend doing that, getting to the Hub (great cafe) was ok but then there was a 30-40 minute walk along the side of a tarmac road. Probably better to drive or cycle if you can.
R.
Cost $8 an adult and took about an hour to walk round. Gentle gradient. Plenty of steamy craters large and small. Good shop.
A.
Really cool place. There wasnf really alot of boilibg mud because of how hot it was. Though there were heaps of steam vents. Little one loved it she kept trying to blow ourmt the steam from the vents. Will come again at some point :)
L.
Third or fourth time I've visited. Not sure if it depends on the weather or not, but I remember it being a lot more active. The mud pools have dried up a bit and there's less steam. Still a great little place to visit, and very affordable.
S.
Well worth the $8. Easy 1 hour walk over a boardwalk. They had 2 buggy prams free to use which was fantastic for our 2 year old. Stunning scenario, would highly recommend.
T.
Cheap visit to a basic thermal park. Improved in recent years with insertion of boardwalks and sales office. Nice 45 minute walk
K.
I actually went for a job interview so didn't go around it.
S.
Just as beutiful as ever.
I have been here for the last 25 years. The new walk ways look brilliant.
C.
You can walk around similar areas for free but this one has a lot of steaming holes and bubbling mud pools in one area making it wonderfully atmospheric. It's cheap and charity run, well worth a detour. They also do $2 coffee in the shop which is handy (you can drink it as you walk round) and the gift shop seemed to be good value for money.
H.
So cheap and close to town and amazing in all weather!
S.
Awesome walk..and wonderful interesting scenery...AND I saw a wild pig
A.
This has some good natural steam coming from the geysers due to geothermeral activity, small fee to walk around.
D.
Craters of the Moon Thermal Area is in north of Taupo, New Zealand. It will take 1 hours walk to go around the track. $8 NZD for Adult and it is really worth to look.
V.
Great walk, fun for the whole family! Great for all levels of fitness too.
R.
Lovely place to come visit with family and friends. $8 entry. Takes about 45mins-1h20m.
S.
It's just wow. Must visit place
J.
A gentle stroll through a cratered landscape, vapour rising from various craters. There's not much more to it, but it's beautiful and worth the entry fee. If you can, do go up the steeper track to the viewpoint, clearly marked, for even better views out over the park.
B.
Interesting place with many steam vents and information plaques. It is really only steam vents and one mud pool though so any more than an hour and things would get repetitive. Only costs $8 though so worth a 1hr visit if in the area.
J.
Loved! Great value for money, awesome activity for all (kids, adults, wheelchair access etc). Highly recommend. Beautiful scenery.
S.
Excellent place and great value.
K.
Beautiful place to visit
M.
Cost 8 NZD worth every cent... Amazing sights
H.
Ok. Not Yellowstone but what is. Still a nice hour walk around with lots of steam.
M.
Beautiful place, highly recommended, $8 entry fee per adult. Worth visiting
J.
We wasted our time. With the abundance of geothermal activity in the area take your chances somewhere else. Maybe going in some other season it is better, but for us it was boring. The few scattered vents are active, one is quite dramatic. But far from what you can see in other places.
1.
Nice to see the improvements to the park and shop since I visited 10 years ago. The car park did not have enough parking spaces so we had to park a little way up the road. I was disappointed to see a few of the craters had a small assortment of plastic and glass bottles in them, which are obviously going to be very difficult to retrieve. Overall, the park was clean and tidy and well signposted with good quality walking tracks or board walks. The car park was not big enough to accommodate all the vehicles, which was surprising given the day of week and the time. Clearly something needs to be done in regards to expanding the car park. Although the thermal attraction is not that exciting itself, it's a very nice walk and worth the money. There are some great views of the surrounding area from the lookout, but the track is quite steep and requires a moderate Fitness level to get up it comfortably.
P.
Must visit.. NZD 8 per entry..
J.
Nice walk for 45 minutes
T.
Average geothermal Park, has nice walkways and good signage for you to follow.
Not a hard walk to see the sights, a lot of the thermal area is basic and not overly active.
The rest amenities are good and clean, a huge open area with good lookout points along the way.
N.
Hot and smelly but a great experience
H.
Well worth the (modest) price of admission - with a generous discount for seniors if you're not afraid to ask! An easy walk, and just as interesting as it was on a first visit over 40 years ago!
n.
Unbelievable, crazy, never seen anything like this before, a must do.
E.
Good price. A must see. Not too far for kiddies but they have a complementary stroller which was perfect. Also not too expensive for an attraction. Would recommend.
A.
Cool place with a few large craters full of steam and mud. 8 bucks for adults, not sure it was worth that. Good place to get out and stretch your legs for a 45ish minute walk
B.
Seems to have lost its wow factor from being there 5years or so ago. Still recommend a visit though, just don't expect much in the way of boiling mud pools - most seem to be just steam vents now. Its a good 1 hours diversion and the $8 entrance seems fair.
a.
Ok, good entry price. I think $8. Doesn't really look like the moon. Marsh land with board walk and smokers. No insects, put on sun screen there is no shelter. Bring water, you can buy bottled water. About 1-2 hours, but can walk in 45 minutes. Oh check out huka falls.. spectacular, when you get back to the main turnoff go straight , just slightly down the hi way.
r.
Not much to see here. There were about 5 stops along the walk to look at the steam coming out of the ground. Good if you're a tourist and can't make it to Rotorua. Lots of walking in the open so bring a hat and sunscreen on a sunny day.
L.
If you've never seen geysers this is the place to go. It mixed quite nicely with the sight seeing tours of our holidays. You definately see how the other half live as we're from England therefore have nothing like this in our own country.
P.
Bit of a rainy day which was good in a way as the place was pretty much deserted. Easy to get photos that looked like you were the only one there. For $8 a cheep hour walk on well formed boardwalks and tracks. Pity inconsiderate people insist on throwing rubbish into the craters.
F.
It was an amazing place but unfortunately was not able to savor the experience as it poured down with freezing rain whilst we were on the 40 min walk, with no shelter available we got drenched!
So if you go and the clouds are looking sus don't take your husbands advice saying "we'll be right"!!
K.
$8 adult. $4 child is a Good price for roughly an hours walk can't really put any negatives on it. If you haven't seen geothermal activity before then I would say this is a great start.
k.
This place offers a large amount of thermal spots and with a very nominal entrance fee of 8$. No other places offer this view for the price. Do not miss it. You have short and long walk. Long walk is good it's 45 mins and you see all kinds of thermal activity.
K.
Easy walk of about 1 hour to see beautiful natural phenomenon.
J.
Beautiful must visit if you have the time. Was really nice just to take my time to walk through and take in the whole thermal park.
S.
A good place to see some of the thermal activity in the region up close. The walk around is very pleasant and includes easy to navigate raised boardwalks. There are 2 options in the walk, an easy fairly flat path & a higher graded path with amazing views over the whole area. If you can't make it to Rotorua then this is a must.
R.
It's a great location, but I think 5 dollars was about the price they should ask for this place. The walk in total takes one hour. We got in for regular price, at 8 dollars per person (2 adults)
C.
One of the viewing decks … observing steam vents and bubble craters
R.
Not very impressive but it's ok if you are around.
S.
Nice walk, but on a hot day it's too hot as there isn't a lot of trees for protection from sun. Highly reccomend taking a hat and sunscreen if going when weather is good
J.
Entry was cheap worth a look if your up.that way
S.
Awesome 45min walk!
J.
$8pp ($20 family). 3 km walk. We took 1.5 hours as I stopped to take lots of pictures. Pleasant, easy-going walk. Good views.
I.
We went on a hot summer day and nearly cooked so I would highly recommend taking a hat and drink bottle! It was exciting for the kids bit we were disappointed there was no mud it had dried up in the heat I'm guessing.
Was well worth the money though as it's very cheap!
H.
I can't say that there is anything too exciting about this place, but it's a nice walk, relaxing enough, doesn't take too long to get through, inexpensive admission, and has a cute little gift shop. What more could you ask for?
G.
Nice walk, though there wasn't much activity when I was there, compared to the website photos and brochure etc.. It's quite open, so bring sun screen on a sunny day.
A.
Recently improved, interesting info and landscape worth seeing. Innexpensive, $20 for family 2 adults and 4 kids.
A.
That is a very nice way to spend an hour. You see quit done nice thermal pools and interesting landscape. I wouldn't drive there just to see this though but when you have time it's a bit so expensive option.
T.
A surreal experience well worth the price of entry. Visit in the off season and you might even get the place to yourself! Just as/potentially even more spectacular in the rain, so don't let wet weather put you off.
W.
Value for money
S.
If you like an easy 45min walk then well worth going. Wear a hat as it can get hot in the sun.
E.
Amazing experience, wonderful nature!
J.
Simple walk. Nice location and worth a visit
B.
Interesting place. Good information along the path.
J.
They stressed about staying on the path as it was dangerous to veer off. My question is, how did they make the paths?
$8 admittance, reasonable, wouldn’t do it again nor would I reccomend it. You have seen it all within the first minute of stepping foot outside of the building.
S.
Really cool little experience, love that they've added new tracks. Definitely better to go if it's rained so the mud pools arent all dried up.
D.
Incredible scenic walk well worth the price of admission
J.
Really interesting walk around the geothermal area, lots going on either side of the board walk. Good info signs as well, nice history of the place.
X.
If you have never been to any geothermal park, then you need to come here
S.
Beautiful walk. Definitely enjoyed it and love the gift shop
J.
Very helpful, informative female staff. Great little shop.
The actual walk through the 'craters' was interesting and wonderous. Easy walk but long enough to give the body a mild workout.
A.
About a 40 minute walk around a geothermal area. Pretty interesting, but my eight year old wasn't that thrilled. Also on a hot day, early or late in the day might be a good idea
Y.
Must visit ! What an incredible path.
C.
Boardwalk among volcanic steam vents. Lots of steam, and noises from the bowels of the earth. Short easy ealk about. 45 mins to 1 hr depending on stoppages. Good signage and knowledgeable staff on hand. Gift shop and toilets available. Lots of parking.
S.
.great walk and kids loved it
P.
It's a special place. It is worth 8 dollars however maybe better to go a place where you can see more type of vulcanic things.
If you go in you must go up to the lookout. It's about 4 minutes plus walk but you will see the whole park.
A.
To be brutally honest, only recommended if you have not / are not planning to visit another geothermal site (many nearer Rotorua - we only went to Orakei Korako, which was wonderful). This does not even begin to compare from a beauty / jaw dropping capability. But this is the closest we got to powerful, hissing steam vents as well as kudos on the excellent signage / descriptions of geothermal phenomena ...
N.
Have you visited this geothermal location yet? It was a worthwhile place to visit and walk around. Visitors must stick to the pathways at all times. Friendly staff that gave out maps and information. A quaint gift shop that also sold refreshments. Volcanic activity tends to increase after heavy rains and can be dangerous. The bubbling mud is more active in wet weather.
R.
Good value for money but if you dont have too much time, go to Wai O Tapu instead as it is a little more spectacular I suppose. If you have plenty of time though, it is an interesting walk!
P.
I was a bit disappointed. If you never saw geothermical hot spots, then you should go. But if you were in Iceland or Açores, then it is not that impressive. Nonetheless, the admission price is cheap ($8 NZD per adult) and the 1h walk is enjoyable.
S.
Not very impressed by the view
L.
Nice walk and scenery
F.
Very unique experience. Hourlong walk and very safe. Reasonably priced and doesn't exploit tourists. Definitely worth a visit.
N.
Really enjoyed seeing the steaming landscape up close
K.
Nice easy walk through interesting landscape
S.
Nice place, good little walk. The staff were lovely, one was born in the UK just around the corner from where we live!
It was a good price for entry so can’t complain
A.
A steamy place which is a nice hike but nothing too strenuous.
R.
Great value for money. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the hour walk around the park. Amazing views and a must do if you are visiting the area. Highly recommended.
S.
Many craters with steam coming out of the ground, but only a few hot water of mud crates. Given the entrance fee a little disappointing, although due to the constant change of the landscape it might be different at a different time. A nice (free) alternative is the thermal walk south of Lake Taupo.
C.
Excellent value and stunning walk. I loved all the thermal activity. I haven't been in many years, very pleased we went.
A.
Well worth the $20 family entry.
C.
Great value for the price, with plenty of geysers and geothermal activity to be seen! A great place to spend an hour or two walking around the loop trail, even on a cloudy/rainy day.
A.
Of all the paid geothermal experiences, at $8, this is a cheap option. And to be honest you get what you pay for, nothing too exciting. A steaming scrubland, and a couple of volcanic blowholes. The park in Rotorua is free and equally good.
S.
It was fine. There are way better places to see geothermal activity. This place has a really good steam jet in one of the craters and that's it. Would recommend Orakai Koroko over this.
S.
Such a natural, it is nice to see it stay. It would have been good to go just to the view point and not walk all around the paths. Not good for a person with breathing issues.
J.
I well priced family experience.
Was a good walk with enough things to keep the kids entertained. View from the top was great.
Staff were friendly and suggested other local attractions.
N.
Great experience. Must do the lookout loop for park overview. Lots of vents and craters coming through low scrub. Feel heat, smell sulfur and see boiling mud.
G.
Nice to see lot of craters. I may have expected a lot as we have been to Rotorua with colorful landscapes with water in crater. Loved the walk.
K.
Fantastic walk through eerie atmosphere. Best to go after there's been some rain otherwise the big mud pools can be dry. Much lower cost than the commercial equivalents around Rotorua
S.
$8 for entrance fees is totally reasonable, and very very interesting to walk through the thermal activities ! It is a great for a family's day out and just enjoy the place !
J.
It was an enjoyable experience. It was a nice walk, good to visit if in the area. Didn't realize it would cost the price it was but still glad we did it.
B.
Great walking trail. Thermal activity isn't dramatic, but definitely worth a look. Take the loop to the lookout for a nice view of the site and surroundings.
l.
OK so this is not wildly interesting but you do get q close to the geysers. There's a big one at the corner where you can hear the amount of pressure the gas pushes up from underground. Don't go during peak period and you'll have the space all to yourself.
j.
Nice walk with lots of fumarolas, quite More than in Yellowstone National Park in the US (there the hotsprings are amazing). Great light for pictures during the afternoon.
2.
Nice stroll for $8 could do with more viewing plat forms so you can see things better. Lack of rain seems to have made areas not so interesting
S.
As we walked around we are immersed in the landscape, its natural and at times colorful the best place was the high lookout where the air was cool and peaceful, the view great for photos. Service was good.
E.
Good place to see thermal activity. You pay $8 for an adult and not many tourists around you. Not for wheelchairs btw, though they have wheelchair accessible toilet
C.
Awesome walk, well maintained area. Would definitely recommend.
C.
Amazing 1 hour walk through geothermal activity, with creators and steaming vents
A.
Such a cool place to visit
X.
Well maintained path to see steams if you are on a rush of time.
If you're are going few days to Rotorua or will do the Tangariro Alpine hike, then can be avoided
R.
Its a good place to visit if you got an hour to spare. I took away one start because i am from the states and been to Yellowstone which is far better than this, so i wasn't as delighted.
B.
At first I thought this a little less impressive than other geo thermal attractions, but in reality we had a lovely fun time here. Being pretty much the only people there added to the experience too.
W.
Very interesting experience.

Nice walk where you can see craters with steam and some boiling mud, not expensive, but less impressive than other thermal parks, who have colourful mineral formations such as Wai O Tapu.
C.
My partner and i highly enjoyed walking around the craters enjoying the sites and smells haha , Also it was a free entry day and we where given free ice blocks on completion of the track so was a nice touch
M.
Great walk for kids, we all enjoyed it. Reasonably cheap and great views.
D.
Interesting and informative place to go for a walk. Especially if you would like to see an area which shows geothermal activities. Takes about an hour.
D.
Nice walk. Interesting environment on a lovely day. Could have some it for free as I am local but still value for the $8.00.

김.
Good. But I want a sunshade.
Z.
Great place to visit in any weather. Flat board walk all the way around the park, so good for people with pushchairs and wheelchairs.
J.
Amazing place, a must do in Taupo
N.
Great walk and views. Awesome place to visit!
U.
Worth visiting and exceptional value for money but not the best geothermal park in the Taupo region
J.
Very cheap considering how beautiful the walk is! The ladies at the counter were very nice. It was only 8 dollars per adult for a beautiful walk.
K.
Very cool! Even Yellowstone doesn't have such a high concentration of thermal activity. Definitely worth the $8 NZD.
J.
Good tracks that are right next to the car park. Hardly any climbing. Tracks could be a little more complex but it's fine for most people.
F.
Great experience, cheap $8, good easy walk though climb to lookout is harder but optional. Well worth the visit!
F.
Nice place for a walk. Has well placed areas for viewing thermal activity around the area. There is an entrance fee however it's well worth it
D.
Family safe circular walkway taking about 45 minutes. Lots of vents and some craters. Excellent value for money.
M.
Cheap opportunity to see steam vents and some bubbling mud. A nice walk but if you are doing any other thermal parks this could be missed.
D.
Definitely worth the money..A bit of a mild walk.... But pray you get a cloudy day to enjoy this out of world kinda place
A.
Awesome place to visit. Very similar to the other geothermal places but a lot cheaper. Definitely worth the visit and there is also a great gift shop here.
A.
A fun stop for those wanting to see steam come out of the rocks and the ground. What a sight! An easy walk on guilded paths. Took less than a hour to do.
S.
Unique experience . Enjoyable walk for family in cool weather , gets uncomfortable on hot sunny day. Good to carry a water bottle.
M.
Craters of the Moon was neat and a good deal. This place is a good introduction to thermal features. We enjoyed our easy walk and the thermal features.
L.
A good place to view geothermal with budget. The map given provide a good guide. For a better view go gor the lookout point. It is just a easy and relaxing walk.
A.
Lovely...pure natural beauty, nice to experience it and be one with mother earth. A great experience, unique and I'm glad to have fit it in our tour.
B.
Good walk. Smells a bit for obvious reasons
J.
Magical experience but name was misleading, craters were not on the moon
A.
What a magical place! The best time to go there I think is on a cloudy day! Surreal experience. Do not miss this one.
J.
Affordable and interesting. The boardwalks and paths are well maintained and give a good outlook of a range of craters, mud pools and vents.
B.
Not bad for $20.00 family ticket would have like to see more activaty with the blow holes etc but another attraction off the bucket list
R.
Wow! Didnt imagine I would get so close to natural thermal activity grounds . Worth the ticket fee. Good stopover for 1 hour if u r on the road trip.
C.
Nice and warm walk.
j.
Amazingly stunning!!! stick to a memory off all the places i've been
K.
I work there as a volunteer so of course I go there, It is an enjoyable 45 minites to an hour's walk, THe ground is very hot so DO NOT LEAVE THE PATH and PLEASE DON"T THROW RUBBISH INTO THE CRATERS It is too dangerous for us to try to recover it
R.
Well worth the visit, 40 minute walk and a easy stroll
S.
Interesting place . 45 min walk
L.
Great morning out, like walking on some foreign world. The smell is bizarre and all the steam vents are amazing. We cycled here from taupo via the huka falls easily
M.
Nice place and good walk along the craters
N.
Loved it
M.
Great experience for a small price. Easy 45 minute walk that is both interesting and beautiful.
M.
Not a bad first taster experience for geothermal activity. Only took 45 mins for the full hour loop but was only $8 so can't complain
S.
Amazing walk, especially on a colder day when everything is a little bit more active. Definitely worthwhile doing the extra 10 minute lookout track.
C.
Good walk. Well maintained. But no bubbling mud
L.
Cheap activity and interesting. Takes about hour and half.
R.
Nice stroll around few craters, pressure release visible as result of beliw surface activities
C.
Great place to get an idea of what is going on underground. Unfortunately some people dumped rubbish in the exhibit so you will see some wood cans etc in there but still worth the visit
A.
Lovely walk ...great place ..looking forward to bring my grandchildren
V.
Could have been better
K.
This is the third time that we have visited over the years and we still love it just as much. This time our 6yr old got to experience the place and he really liked it too.
b.
Good for a day walk/hike. Cool to see the geothermal craters. Take the extended route. It gives a nice view and doesn’t take much longer.
