Reviews of Taupo Museum and Art Gallery
P.
It's a small cute museum ! If you are a student it's only $3 entry fee (this includes any uni here in NZ). There is a bit of history on Taupo - especially on the hot steams. They have couple of local maori things in the museum
Overall it can be done within 20minutes. Highly recommended - don't forget to check out their mini garden
D.
This is a lovely and well organised museum. We only had an hour and we ran out of time before it closed. It has some interesting information on the volcano, the forestry history and is well balanced with the Maori stories. One of the highlights for me were the journal entries for peoples caravan holidays to Taupo in the 50’s & 60’s. Well worth a visit.

Very fun and interesting. A small fee of 5$ is expected if you are not local. You will get everything explained but there is still some lack of information on how to go around and it's rather small. (Taupo is small, too, so it was expected.)
B.
Wonderful Museum! Great place to take kids and soak up Taupō's history. It's free for locals!
H.
Awesome place to introduce history of Maori people and Their lifestyle in old days, a rose garden on the side of museum as well.
S.
Cool interesting stuff glad not have to waste money going overseas looking at foreign museums at other things!!! They need to have stuff donated about other tech gadgets stuff from 1940s 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s etc etc that the school kid’s children from 00s 10s the kid’s children don’t know about the yesteryear & the past!!!

Definitely make time to see this, as it is very well done. The labelling is excellent and of international standard. Someone described the museum as quaint. Maybe quaint as small in size but that is a plus, as you can drown in content at some museums and I thought it was all highly professional.
Also a great place to go on a rainy day. Good parking outside. $5 adult entry. $3 for Seniors and free to locals. A very manageable size but we still managed to spend two hours there.
There is a waka, well displayed Maori items, a comprehensive early forestry display, a miniature diorama of a logging operation which was amazing, a Moa skeleton, local rocks you can touch, an early caravan and a diary about trips, a Maori meeting house, items the early settlers would have used and several audio visual displays.
The most fascinating visual display to me was one by the National film unit on early tourism in the area.
In an adjacent room is a display of the earliest aerial photographs by White's Aviation. All are hand coloured and there is an audio visual describing the people who did this. This display may be temporary.
Look for the red roof at the back of the park near the Library. Not far from the i-site where the Visitor Information Centre is located.

A lovely little spot to stop off and explore the current exhibition of the Maori culture and they also have the changing exhibitions also. There is a garden on display which won the a Chelsea design award i believe it was, a few years ago, which was nice to see. They also have a nice gift shop with many little books of useful things which i rather enjoyed. A fantastic place and if youre a library member you can enter for free.

Awesome little friendly Museum. Very interesting place for a town like this. Would be good to visit this site as a family or just to spend an hour or so of your time.
K.
There is a big rose garden near to the museum. We enjoyed the flavour and beauty of the rose garden. We actually park our car in front of the rose garden. In the museum got the ancient views of the Taupo. Taupo was famous for there woods. There are hips of cars parking available here. Wheal chair accessible entrance so no worries for everyone to enter their museum. I love this place very much.

This is a not well known museum but it's well worth a visit! Free parking, by the park. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. There are tons of treasures and info pitched to all ages, also a cool kids activity to help them keep looking round and let you see the whole place. Beautiful old Waka in a climate controlled area. Cool wee caravan. Travel through historic NZ in an hour or two. Can nip round faster if you don't have long. Great gift shop with interesting things.

Staff was absolutely lovely, myself and my wife visited. It was nice however it was not amazing, our experience was plesant however its an extremely small museum, it would take 20nins tops to look around slowly. Had to pay an entry fee not much at all I think it was $10 for us both, we didn't mind because it was cheap however we have been to much more Nicer, more interesting and bigger museums like the Auckland or Christchurch museum and they are free. They have a courtyard an outside area apart of the museum which we were excited to see however it was once again very small, beautiful piece but it was only one small Maori water fountain.

It is a nice place to go. Free for residents. Children (and parents) are very entertained with the little dinosaurs hidden in the museum. This museum is just next to the playground so it is very easy to go if it is too hot outside.
D.
Nice local museum to learn about the area.
Nice displays, lots of info.
They also have a little art gallery and award winning garden.
Whether you are a local or tourist, it is worth a visit.
C.
Fabulous range of guest artists on display with events for the whole family. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, nothing is too much bother. Gifts selection useful for overseas postings. Well narrated permanent displays.
B.
Great if it's raining or you want to learn about early life in Taupo. I loved the little model on the forest railway. Would take about an hour or more. Regular price for non locals is $5.
N.
What a lovely experience. We have had the luck to be welcomed so warmly and professionally by a blonde Goddess who was so kind and beautiful. It was a july Sunday visit but this girl had Friday's and Christmas attitude. Wow.
V.
Kids had a great time finding things on the check list. Cool historical Kiwiana stuff. They enjoyed the craft area. Friendly staff. We spent about an hour. Kids FREE Adults $5pp 😊
C.
A well done and managed Taupo museum with special mention of the Maori house includes the actual carvings by famous Maori carver. History of the area including Maori settlements, the volcanic event creating the lake and information on the geothermal area and its source and volcanic rocks and geology. Newer history of the New Zealand constibilary, the timber industry and development of the famous trout fishing spot and tourism.
P.
Very interesting museum. Short but interesting for Maori part. In addition, the local story are explained. 5 NZD.
B.

It's a cute lil museum. Took us about less than 20mins to go around. But nice and tidy. ❤

Locals get in for free with proof of your address (library card will do.) Plenty of interesting displays for kids ages 5+ and a small art gallery for the adults.
D.
An art exhibition of excellent work from Tongariro Prison inmates. Definitely worthy of these pieces being there. To the artists - 'Keep up the excellent work '

(Translated) It is a small museum in Taupo and it is not one of the most popular attractions of the city, however I find it very interesting to go.
I had rainy days when I was in Taupo, although it was not cold in January and I walked a lot in the rain, I took the opportunity to visit places indoors.
It has a mobile home and a Maori dwelling, it also tells the whole story of Taupo, it is a typical village museum.
It is recommended to visit it!

Recomendable visitarlo!

(Translated) It's small, but there is a mission, so the kids participated happily. The kids are free, so I recommend dropping by.

규모는 작지만 미션이 있어서 아이들이 즐겁게 참여했어요 아이들은 무료이니 들려보길 추천합니다.
