Reviews of Matata DOC Camp
Great DOC campsite with such a friendly DOC ranger. Drinking water and clean toilets. Right by the beach. Loads of spaces to book. Hot showers for $1 (2 minutes). DOC ranger requested showers were limited to 2 minutes to preserve water.
Dave is one of the best and friendliest Rangers I‘ve met here in NZ at the DOC Campsite. The place is direct at the beach, there are clean toilets and even HOT Showers. Definately one of my favourites in NZ.
Everything was perfect, the camp ranger (Dave) is amazing, friendly and extremely helpful.
Definitely catered for our needs.
This was our 1st visit, but we will be back.
A gem campsite right by the ocean. Lovely big sites. Clean facilities. Delightful hosts, Louise and Mike. Walk into town.is 5 minutes to great pub and Aunties fish and chips - a must to try for fresh crispy fish and chips, best weve had in a very long time, dont miss it. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Stayed here for just one night. Greeted by the very friendly Dave, who was more than happy to share his knowledge about the area. Facilities were very clean for a campsite. Nice option to have a hot shower for $1.
It also has bins unlike other DOC sites which is ideal. One of the best DOC sites we've been to.
It's quiet and in a good location.
The facilities are minimal and I feel like it's not worth the price, but it was a very nice place.
Loved this spot! Book online prior to arriving so you have your gate code ready. Felt very safe, it sits between the wildlife refuge and beach. Lovely staff! Toilets were very clean. Short walk down to the shop. Would definitely recommend.
What let this campsite down for me was having no powered sites available, only one shower for the whole campground which cost extra $ to use it, and there were LOTS of prickles in the grass.
One of my fav beach side spots to camp
Awesome little site, massive camp sites and great hot shower at only 1.00 for 2 mins, bookings must be made online before arrival on the Doc site, self contained sites must use own toilets due to council water restrictions.
Great place to camp. Nice to have lovely hosts like Theresa and Micheal. Toilets and shower always clean and the grounds are well looked after. Will continue to come back
Wonderful location, right next to beach and within walking distance of excellent pub. Sites are so well maintained, great facilities and lovely to have pukeko and tuis around as you make dinner! Dave the ranger was an exemplary host - made an effort to check in with us each day and provided excellent recommendations for walks nearby. He even remembered my partners birthday - what a legend!
Lovely campground, clean facilities, lots of space and directly at the beach. Beach is beautiful and empty. This was one of our favourite spots to camp.
Really well maintained site. Dave the DOC ranger is really helpful and friendly. Clearly loves his job and takes really good care of the site.
Tent sites back on the beach access, so the sound crashing waves gently lulls you to sleep.
Outdoor sinks for washing dishes, and clothes. Water from sinks is drinkable and can be used to fill water jugs/bottles.
Bathrooms clean and tidy, always enough toilet paper, coin operated shower is very good. Lots of room and great temperature and pressure.
The site has everything you expect and more! And by more I mean a wonderful chap called Dave! He was the friendliest kiwi we met all trip and was really helpful. He even addressed us by Name a day later! Genuinely a credit to DOC.
Showers were $1 for 2 minutes... Ideally you need 2 people one to put the coins in and one in the shower as the coin box is a little far away but it works really well! M
Great beachside campsite with a super helpful friendly warden.
So quiet considering how busy the roads is. Amazing DOC host. Visits many times, tends to the property. Warm $1 for 2min. Can put $2 in at same time and get 4min etc . Just 1 shower for camp but no line for me. Flush toilets that are maintained well. Beautiful beach. It's improved for swimming.
Out the gate is booze shop, dairy, fnc, pub grub.
Added a family member 1 nite with no probs. Had visitors with no probs.
$15/nite and worth every cent
Inside voices after 10pm
Happy and nice vibes! Perfect location, clean facilities, friendly and happy host... Plenty of drinking water, a hot shower, and an amazing night sky. great seafood restaurant and a small supermarket around the corner.
One of the best DOC sites we’ve stayed at.
Drinking water, clean toilets, phone signal, great beach and well managed.
Booked another night cause we wanted to chill here for another day
Great place, handy to everything. Clean toilets and lovely hot shower. An extra bonus was the ability to get rid of our rubbish and get water. The custodians, Richard and Kathy were lovely and only too happy to help in any way the could. Would not hesitate yo recommend or stay there again
Love this place for its peaceful atmosphere, you are seconds away from the beach or you can take a walk by the waterways. The doc hosts are engaging and pleasant.
We planned to stay at this camp for a couple of nights, but when we arrived, we were confronted by a very unfriendly, rude and unpleasant ‘camp manager’. When she told us in a rather unwelcoming way that we could only stay if we booked in online, we felt rather uncomfortable to stay. Surely, a DOC camp should be bookable onsite, especially since not everyone is online or has mobile data while travelling.||During our quick look around, we found the access road had large pot holes, and we were rather surprised to see rubbish at various places around the camp, especially considering the camp charges an extra $2 fee for ‘rubbish’ (no matter if any rubbish was deposited or not). The camp was clearly not at all up to the standard of other (basic) DOC camps. We decided not to stay. We lodged a complaint with DOC and hope they can do something about this currently unacceptable situation.
Great campsite, right on the beach! You can hear the ocean. The showers are expensive, $2 for 2 minutes. There is no shelter to cook, but there is an outdoor sink with drinking water. We stayed here during summer, and the beach was amazing. There were baby hammerhead sharks swimming around! Overall, it's a great site.
This is one of the best places we stayed. Dave is very helpful and nice guy. He keeps this place nice and clean as his own.
Good place as it’s next to the beach
Nice campsite, very clean toilets and good location.
The hosts are amazing. Super welcoming genuine people.
Nice campground.
Little river on the one side, the sea on the other.
Data connection, toilets and showers.
Well cared off, big parking spaces.
I initially read a few very negative reviews about the campsite but I had a different experience. Upon arrival I met with Edwin the site manager. Edwin was super helpful and friendly. Chilled, easy going dude.
After setting up camp, I later met Pip, Edwin’s wife who was also really friendly and easy to talk to. They both shared great info of the surrounding areas and things I should try do and see. They were the nicest site managers I’ve met.
As far as a DOC camp ground goes, it’s a great location. My tent site was bigger than I’m used to, so lots of space. I was along the tree line which runs along the dunes. It’s a great wind break. I loved falling asleep listening to the sound of the waves.
It rained really hard during the night but my site never had any issues with getting water logged. The site never had much grass. It was more exposed ground so it got a bit muddy. But not excessive.
The shower was a bit odd. Make sure you ask someone to insert the coin for you as the timer starts 2 min as soon as the coin goes in.
Nice flushing toilets.
Highly recommend.
We had a few really lovely days at this site. The facilities were always spotless and the two owners are super easy going and nice to talk to!
Until next time ❤️
My husband and I decided to stay at the camp on Friday night as we had been there the yr before and loved it. We wernt even out of our van, and this disgusting woman came up and had a go. We wernt sure of the check in times, and we're 45mins late. This was absolutely fine as we didn't know. But her attitude was appalling to us and treated us like we had done something terribly wrong. We were more than happy to give our money to Pikowai camp up the road, and will never ever return.
Love this place, well kept with both the beautiful beach and shops for supplies right on your doorstep. Camp hosts Pip and her hubby are super friendly and helpful. $1 for 2 minutes hot showers. Sinks for washing up / drinking water throughout the camp. Flushing toilets. Definitely recommend. Note: Ignore the previous reviews ref poor attitude of camp hosts, they have since been replaced.
We love coming here to chill out and just unwind , meeting fellow campers and caravan like minded people from all over the country and around the world. facilities are always clean and tidy . close to beach for surf casting and shops camp custodian Edwin and Pip are Awesome to deal with. They are always out there helping campers and going that extra mile fixing the little things that matter and Maintaining the grounds .
I've camped at this place for 2 days, 25th to the 27th December 2023 for my Christmas and I loved it, didn't want to leave. Best place to camp especially if you want to get away from everything or want a change of scenery. The camp ranger is awesome, Dave which he walks around the whole campus to check if everyone's ok or if you have an questions to ask, he's always available. Really I'll rate this campus 100% for sure.
We love this place its so quiet close to beach and shops. Shower and toilets are always clean. The hosts Theresa and mike, and Dave are wonderful very obliging and friendly. If i was being picky it would be great to have a 2nd shower for when its busy.
Highly recommended though.
We just spent 5 nights here in our motorhome. The camp is right next to the beautiful beach behind some sand dunes and a 4 minute walk over the road to Matata township, which means there is road noise. We had a bit of an odd stay to be honest. The hosts, on arrival were quite stand off-ish and then, they would like keep randomly staring at us, or if someone was stuck at the gate, due to a gate code error, they would just stare at them? They would jump on the mower at 5pm on a beautiful evening, like last Friday, when everyone is sitting outside having a drink or dinner, and they would start cleaning the facilities and then leave them for like an hour closed, very bizarre. It’s almost as if they didn’t want to be there. Just weird. Enjoyed our time, but wouldn’t stay again.
Spacious sites, hot shower, flushing toilets, right by the sea and nature walks. Dave the camp ranger was excellent. Friendly, helpful, an all round good sort. Will be back!
My boyfriend and I got "welcomed" with the most horrible and awful AWFUL lady who not only fully shouted at us to go "walking speed" when we're doing 5k...but also didn't even give us a chance to explain ourselves and when we tried to, she was so horrible to us that it upset both of us so much that we kept reflecting on it throughout our trip because this lady really really should not be in this industry to talk to people like that. Especially if we were new to camping like this and didn't know what the "rules" are. Imagine if we were another race and couldn't understand English??? We were horrified with how she treated us and we promptly went to find another camp ground who gave us much much better service. Honestly she was so so rude, arrogant, horrid and beastly. Would not recommend going there ever.
What a beautiful campsite! And Dave was such a wonderful, caring host. Matata campsite is next to the most stunning beach, it was such a special place. The facilities here are very clean and the camp pitches are so flat. Absolutely loved this place, will definitely be back
A lovely place to camp, swimming and fishing. The host is very helpful and makes sure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. Saturday night we enjoyed a couple of cold ones listening to the live band at the Matata pub..Thank you for the lovely stay..
Beautiful camping next to the beach you can take shower for 1 dólar.
Edwin and pip are really Friendly and beautiful people.
Fab DOC site right on the beach and the DOC Ranger couldn't be more helpful.
Nice chill camp right at the beach. 2 minute walk and you are fishing, 10 mins and you are at the fish and chip shop 😁. Has everything you need for a kick back break, flat for motorhome. Friendly cam manager.
Called in for a night after Easter. Helpful custodian, she helped me with the online DOC booking & no nicer words than “we have a hot shower” could be spoken after a long day travelling. A well maintained, clean & spacious site. Set back from the road so no noise. Room for easy parking of our camper.100% will stay again. Do book prior as can only do so online.
We stayed 3 nights from 7 -10th Feb. The Hosts that were on duty during our stay were very friendly & helpful and made sure our stay was enjoyable. Toilets clean and campground tidy. We will certainly return. Paul & Heather Jones
Epic place to camp, cool old school vibe but still nice and clean friendly environment- Dave the DOC guy is a legend he made me feel so welcome and safe and just all round good sort would go back just to catch
Lovely campsite nestled away from the busy road between a wetland and the beach.
The toilets are clean, flush toilets. There is only one coin operated shower but we didn't have to wait when we were there.
The beach is lovely for a walk.
The town is very small but there is a chip shop, cafe, pub, and small shop.
Staff were friendly and helpful whenever we saw them.
One of the best ! Awesome access to beach and fishing. Facilities are always spotless and camp clean and well kept.
Raewyn, the camp manager, is an absolute pleasure with both maintaining the Health & Safety for everyone and her knowledge of both the area and beach which she is happy to share with all that stay.
Having stayed on a regular basis for the past 5 years I would recommend the Camp to anyone. Just remember to now book online and abide by the check in & out time so more of us can experience a beautiful place.
Good little spot, lots of bugs at the night, not too bad if you keep your tent zipped up. Beach nice enough. Great hot showers for $1 per 2 mins at the camp, which was handy.
A nice spring (braemer spring) just up the road, and some convenient shops 2mins from the camp.
The owners r amazing and definitely worth the stay, amazing access to the beach. Kids loved it
We had a great week here. Nice and family friendly. 1 dollar for a hot shower, flush toilets.
Lovely and helpful staff. it's just a few steps from the camping ground to the beach. Good for surfing fishing .
Great time, staff were great. Awesome beach for swimming, surf casting and pipi collecting! Hot & cold showers are $1 for 4mins which was surprisingly long enough, but there is a hose across from the showers for a quick wash down. Flushing toilets were a bonus and are kept clean. Enjoyed ourselves very much, will definitely be back next summer.
Camped here with a friend. The camp ranger was kind and incredibly helpful. Was quiet after 9/10pm & felt very safe.
A great place to relax
Lady at the front desk was awful and and shouted at us from the get go.drove up at less then 5km taking in sights was shouted at, told to park off the road and pay at office, parked on field and had her calling us blind and stupid and continued to shout at us when we apologised,as we hadn't been there, told us find another spot as we didn't listen to her, after being verbally abused we left willingly and vowed to never return to such a place. Everyone else there looked terrified and on edge. Highly recommended. As for the experience can't say due to not actually staying.
Absolutely enjoyed our time here camping with friends went fishing only a 1min walking distance collected tuatuas on low tide right out the front there, very clean toilet areas thank you!! 😄 the extra charge for rubbish dumpage is awesome!! Accessibility to water facilities was great!! And although there's only one shower it was always warm never cold keep up the awesome work 😊
Beautiful camp walk to the beach over a little hill fabulous beach. Camp has toilets a shower, water and a skip for rubbish. Shops over the road beautiful fish and chip shop 👌not far fro Whakatane shopping centre. A lovely lady and her son that look after the camp. This camp is so quite and peaceful love it. You can park where you like .
The best place we have camped at! Absolutely great people running the camp. Toilets were clean and well looked after. We stated over Easter weekend fully booked. Was the best weekend we have had. Highly recommend
Perfect!

Awesome camp, Beautiful location, very nice owners. Absolutely loved it, recommend to all.
The ranger Dave goes out of his way to help everyone
Wow, such a beautiful place to camp. Pip and Edwin were so helpful with my endless questions about camping and other DOC campsites. Would highly recommend as has an awesome family atmosphere and managers are amazing. ❤️
Paradise amazing place to visit, stay and explore the beach.
Great camp run by a very freidly Dave.
This is one of my heavenly places. I just loved this camp. Friendly people hand washing tubes. Toilets, and a hot shower. Borders onto a swampy bird sanctuary, so very interesting. Good walking beach access. A real little gem
