Reviews of Tauranga Art Gallery
D.
Promising and aspiring artists. The council is bringing it together. Definitely a place to stop at
S.
Customer service: loved the service of the lady at the front desk on this Sunday. She was so patient and explained everything in detail. Totally made our day. 5stars for her customer service.
Exhibition: liked the VR exhibition and good layout of all other exhibitions.
Totally worth the experience.
N.
Really great free attraction with the area! The Terminus Exhibit was on while I was in town. It was a really interesting virtual reality gallery. I think kids would love it as well. I highly recommend!
E.
Loved it! This exhibit was so whimsical. Photos don't even do it justice. Wanted to see it a second time, but there was a new exhibit. Entry by koha.
R.
Great displays and new every time we visit, (approx 6 monthly.). The displays are based on topical and historical events, situations and the human condition, certainly thought provoking.
The curator is very well informed and has a wonderfully broad view of world events. It's like a pilgrimage for me when in Tauranga.
C.
Great set up....superb artwork.
Art auction on Friday
T.
Its small but i like this gallery
D.
Great experience. Had to intervene with some tourists touching art works so may need to step up staff presence.
C.
Lovely light, an excellent exhibition space. Easy central city access, with cutting edge exhibitions.
M.
It's the first time I visited this place and fell in love with this place as I was so impressed with the artist's creativity. I am so inspired with these displays and looking for more creativity in near future 🙏👍🙏
t.
Free entry. Worth to spend time and enjoy the art masterpiece.
T.
I specifically went to Tauranga Art Gallery to do an study on Māori Contemporary Artist Mr G - Graeme Hoete and was blown away not only by his first Solo Exhibition-Home but the other accompanying exhibitions by Kelcy Taratoa - Who Am I? Te Rangi Haupapa and the exuberant healing mural by Marunui Hotene-Poutama. I totally would recommend that if your in the Tauranga area, make your way down to the art gallery on Willow street and get your creativity activated with these thought provoking and well executed art works. I plan on taking my Kura Kaupapa Māori art students Kura Nui on a tour next week and know they will equally inspired as well.
T.
5 different displays. Spacious. Virtual reality videos a surprise treat.
s.
Friendly staff. Interesting exhibition about gender. Don't miss the short film on the first level.
L.
One of the most impressive art galleriesIve seen in awhile. I really, personally, enjoyed most of what i saw in there. Stuff was actually interesting, even if your not big into pretentious art its a treat for your eyes and makes you go "Woah neato!"
P.
This is a superb Gallery with a variety of exhibitions that are always fresh and interesting. It's a great visit in Tauranga exceptional.
J.
A great gallery.
On entry we received a very warm welcome from the staff who were enthusiastic to explain the current exhibitions and features of the gallery.
Plenty of space too move around and appreciate the works. It's well laid out and is very apparent that the building was custom built for this purpose.
Well worth a stop if you're in the neighbourhood.
A.
I came across this art gallery over the weekend and was greeted warmly by the staff who told me all about what was on display and I found the art to be quite intriguing, my favourite being the work of John Roy and his fool's gold collection. I found his work and the meaning and messages behind each piece to be rather captivating 😌 will definitely be coming again
C.
Always such brilliant work displayed and today was no exception.
Definitely worth a visit..only takes 30min walk around but well worth it
L.
We were with a school class and the on-site teachers were amazing. A big thanks for that. The clay head exhibition was just weird and creepy, not my cup of tea at all.
F.
The gallery always has great exhibits, and many artists incorporate the design of the space into their exhibitions, some even making specific artworks to fit this amazing space. I have also been to great concerts here. Definitely worth a visit if you are in downtown Tauranga.
A.
I've visited the gallery a few times over the years since it opened – ie whenever I've been on holiday in NZ – and this time was the first time I've enjoyed ALL the exhibitions. I particularly liked the display of local students' NCEA (?) art portfolios – great to see a representative range of really good work.
I did notice that there was a smaller range of books on sale compared with my last visit (summer 2016/17).
P.
Quite a small art gallery, but had some really interesting and unusual exhibitions. It would be quite nice if they could have the space/funding to expand a little more. Really good location opposite the i-site.This is a smallish 2 floor building with a lift and toilets. The gallery offers visiting exhibitions on Rodin on loan from Te Papa,
P.
It was a good place to wase ten minutes before my bus. Really enjoyed it and it's cool how it's free and you can donate if you wish to I didn't have any spare coins but next time I will. It's also really good how it changes every so often.
S.
absolutely love it here creating beautiful toi whilst learning with the kids, it's such a great space and so needed.. Thank you to all for such a great day so A mum.from Kokori x
A.
Always creative and exciting exhibitions.
A.
Amazing opitcial allusion art being displayed at present ..a must see
L.
I really enjoyed this exhibition space as it seemed flexible enough to accommodate various types of exhibits from installation pieces to free-standing artworks to wall mounted works of art. There is a staircase to the upper gallery as well as a lift. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's great to see regional centres promoting local and national artists.
M.
Excellent variety of local art. Very well set out and using local well presented artists. Free entry to nz residents and very reasonable charge for overseas visitors. Advertised in accomodation places. Visit anytime and repeat as changes often. Much smaller than many Art Galleries we've seen but it has plenty to discover and love. We enjoyed the Exhibition of Natalie Cousens and the magical friends of Gary Baseman. Beautiful place and a must do
A.
My three year old and I enjoyed our 30mins-45 visit. At this time during the school holidays they had interactive displays for children. Very friendly receptionist who offered her services and greeted visitors with a nice smile.
C.
Not a large gallery but worth dropping into regularly to see what's new as the exhibits are changed frequently. Also good kids stuff if you manage to book in.
L.
A very accessible gallery. Great turnover of interesting exhibits. We take our little ones there often to see the new features. Staff are always very friendly.
K.
I think this is an each to their own kind of place. I found the space actually quite boring and so did my kids. The light display was an anti climax for us. I guess we jyst aren't art people. I am glad it was free.
R.
Small art gallery, lots of ceramics when we were there, not really my style. But the gallery is nice and fairly priced.
J.
Saw Banksy and another exhibition. Blows your mind and takes you to another place. Very beautiful art gallery. Wish it was bigger.
K.
Kids love coming to the art gallery but almost always you'll come across some not so friendly characters or pictures. It can be a weird experience depending on the theme.
C.
A small gallery that really focuses on quality over quantity. The ambience is quiet and sophisticated and the art is breathtaking and variable. I went when they had the Tibetan Buddhist shrine set up and it was phenomenal.
A.
As an Auckland export for whom the arts were a big part of her growing up this place is a cultural oasis. For it’s size the quality of exhibitions has gone ahead by leaps and bounds over the years. The staff are helpful but non intrusive, there’s a good selection of memorabilia and there are also great evening events for “Friends” or those of us ‘plebs’ with a spare buckaroo or three for ‘hob nobbing’ Luv i!
H.
A delightful space, we spent a good hour looking at the different installations. A very pleasant place to escape the heat and stroll. We loved the weaving exhibition.
r.
This gallery illustrates the strength and quality of regional arts programming in NZ. Attractive space, good, well-organized exhibitions. And the staff was particularly welcoming.
H.
Last year when I visited they had a great display on. Lights and sounds and smells that my 3 year old thoroughly enjoyed.
Just a few weeks back we went back with friends and we were shocked at what we saw. Downstairs was a display of distorted people all bowing down or in contorted positions of prostration toward a very Masonic symbolism and upstairs there was a lady dancing with just a cloth over her bits but you could still see her nipples. The lady assured the kids it was safe to go in as it was a dancing room but then as my friend came out she noticed a sign saying for mature audiences only. Kids should not be seeing this sort of thing. Breastfeeding is different to having a sexualized image being shown.
Please in future make displays kid friendly or have a sign big enough or clear enough to see.
P.
Whilst a smaller gallery, it allows me to really enjoy the installations/exhibitions without having to feel I need to rush. And great for my younger kids (<6yo) too
R.
Really awesome to visit there ❤️❤️. Staff is so kind and provides information about art. Free entry and also have public toilets.
B.
Brilliant. Super exhibitions. Some interractive. Thought provoking. Friendly staff... Very welcoming. Usually something for children to do... Dress up dolls at the moment. We'll worth a visit.
J.
I didn't find the gallery to be bad, but it could be improved.
The space itself is fairly small. The ground floor has enough space for 1 feature exhibition, plus whatever is in the large entry atrium. The upper level wraps around the atrium, and is more suited to displaying varied works rather than a collection.
I visited because of an exhibition called Light Touch. This comprised of 3 large, interactive works. Squidsoup's "Submergence" was definitely worth the visit. Brian Knep's "Healing Pools" was pretty but bland. Chin-En Soo's "Hueue" was quite forgettable.
Some of the other works on display were pretty good, but others were marred by lack of attention by the gallery. For example, one video-based work had the mouse cursor sitting near the middle of the screen. Another work had several little booths, each lit a different colour of the rainbow. Each was supposed to have a different smell, but the oil diffusers were empty in all but 1 of the rooms. These results could have been really rectified.
Entry is free, but a donation is requested.
P.
Magnificent gallery (and it's free). 3 exhibitions when we went there : one of very beautiful contemporary sculpture, one of old photos with various current comments which was very instructive, and to finish an art ABC well conceived with very clear explanations, and representative works. A must-see !
S.
A visit to the Tauranga Art Gallery is a must when roaming in town. I love it
B.
Parking was bad due to being a rainy day and school holidays but Exhibitions are always fresh and exciting and suit all kinds of audiences. Great for kids too especially
M.
For a small town Gallery can really put together an exhibit. Interesting informative well displayed. Great place to spend an hour or two.
T.
Tauranga art gallery is nice but it's quite small it's free but you can put the nation's in that's probably what's best to do it's like when small for a quite a big city and yeah there's like exhibitions and other times I think they close it for a little bit too long when they're sitting there exhibitions that but it's ok was only thing that I really like is that it's quite small
C.
We had a great time. Excellent, eclectic selected pieces. Beautiful space. Pop in, check it out.
A.
A small Art Gallery that makes the most of its space. A large open foyer for installations and a few rooms for displays. A very modern and clean feel to the gallery.
E.
Love this place, always very interesting article installations and the kids just love it.
S.
Brilliant show of the NZ Architectural assoc. display that was at Vienna , we all loved it, the speaker was interesting and very entertaining so glad we went
L.
The installations are always amazing, given the size of the atrium. I would recommend checking the website as they are very often going through renovations or changing over different collections
L.
Love love love this place.
Ever changing amazing exhibit's from local and international artists.
Well worth a visit.
A.
Excellent interactive displays currently. School trip was a delight and some of the modern displays really made me consider some real world issues.
C.
Free but very small and never much going on. I don't tend to think much of the work displayed in there either although a couple of exhibitions have been good.
K.
Bit small but top rate presentation and awesome engaging and contemporary mostly local art.
Friendly and informative, just stunning!
G.
Small but really good. Definitely worth a visit, especially when they have an exhibition that is very interesting and involving.
N.
Love this place, constantly displaying awesome, fun, interactive and captivating exhibits. Friendly staff and welcoming to every person
D.
A fascinating exhibit, a clear messages within the Gallery.
E.
Excellent place to see some locally created art. Exhibition on comics had some amazing reproductions and an entertaining film.
L.
Always great exhibits, the staff are always helpful and it's free for locals (a donation helps though!).
l.
Great spot to visit.
F.
Exhibits vary in interest, depending upon the theme at the time, and the tastes of the visitors. Not a patch on e.g. Auckland Art Gallery for the quality of art exhibits.
B.
Always have different art gallery's each month only takes an hour out of your time free entry but always nice to give a donation
C.
Love taking the kids here to the interactive displays. Helpful, friendly staff and a great way to fill in an hour or two.
M.

(Translated) Interesting and individual exhibition regarding design and graffiti. Very modern and new exhibition number exhibits.
The exhibition corner for the works from college (shown in a picture) is particularly recommended
Can only say something about the current exhibition.

(Translated) I think it is a great gallery in New Zealand. You can also see a lot of Maury sculptures, and it is a place where you can enjoy a feast of pleasant artworks as various events change periodically. The art experience for children is a natural preparation.

(Translated) There are a few more works that seem to support New Zealand artists rather than their works, but Tauranga's only museum. Works that can be used by the family are often displayed, so it is worth seeing with your family.
