Reviews of The Lion & Tusk - Museum of the Rhodesian Services Association

As a former member of the Rhodesian Ministry of Internal Affairs, INTAF, I ordered from the Rhodesian Services Association the new embroidered unit badge to sew on the blazer I wear to remembrance events here in the UK. I was able to pay for the badge in the UK, and it was sent by Air Mail from New Zealand.
When I received the badge, I was amazed at the exquisite quality and richness of colour. I had a choice of colour for the backing, which was matched perfectly.
A highly professionally manufactured badge that makes me extremely proud to wear.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Lion and Tusk and I would highly recommend it to those interested in history. The exhibits were very well maintained and the collection boasts a comprehensive array of artifacts from a nation lost to the world.
The staff were very welcoming and were pleased to answer any questions my Gran and I had for them about the history of Rhodesia. If you have a particular interest in military history, I would highly recommend you visit this museum on your next trip to the Mount. Whether you have heard of Rhodesia or not, there is plenty to learn and much to see at this attraction. Many of the exhibits tell personal stories of soldiers and civilians from Rhodesia and offer some insight into the hardships they endured due to the Communist insurgency. For this reason, the collection is valuable as a fascinating window into a way of life that is hard for those of us without a connection to Rhodesia to imagine.
As is customary for a museum, there is a gift shop with quite an array of tasteful offerings. I can personally recommend the history book on the Rhodesia Regiment which was put together by a number of authors including those involved with the museum. This book is a treasure of a reference and like everything else at the museum, the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. I was surprised to hear from the volunteers in the office, that when they did not have one of their nice green poloshirts with the Rhodesian lion on it in my size, that they could simply take my measure and have one made across the street and delivered to me. It is great to see this museum working with many local and small Kiwi businesses. They also offer some items in the iconic Rhodesian bushstroke camouflage which will no doubt interest military history buffs.
All in all, this place was well worth the visit and the long drive and I could have happily spent hours in the library alone. Do take the time to speak to the volunteers and buy a few gifts to help preserve what is one of very few Rhodesian collections remaining and definitely the best.

My medals having been stolen I took a chance and asked The Lion and Tusk if they could be replicated, and was pleasantly surprised by a prompt reply in the affirmative. A most detailed quote was provided. Upon confirming my order I was again very pleased to see that identification and proof of service was required, which took some finding! Glad to see that only genuine applicants would be able to obtain replicas. Hugh is very helpful, payment details were clear and the medals arrived in a very short time, exactly as quoted. Thanks Hugh, your service is exceptional. I am looking forward to being able to travel internationally once more and will most certainly have the Lion and Tusk on the itinerary. Derek Young

A very big thank you to Hugh for his assistance in our purchase of a beret, badge, caps, para wings and a book, they are outstanding quality and very reasonably priced.
The Lion and Tusk museum is a great tribute to the Rhodesian forces, and its run with the passion of great Rhodesian heritage. I would recommend visiting the museum either in person or via the website, you wont be disappointed.
The Lion and Tusk is more than a museum, It runs in the blood.

I recently ordered a couple of Rhodesia Regiment badges and a comprehensive history of the Rhodesia Regiment. The service was amazingly friendly and efficient, and I'm blown away by the incredible depth and immaculate presentation of the book. I highly recommend the Rhodesian Services Association to any former Rhodesians, and in fact to anyone with an interest in the true history of Rhodesia. Many thanks to Hugh Bomford and his team.
A.
Contacted ‘The Lion & Tusk Museum’ regarding a Silver replica of my dad’s Rhodesian Service medal for his birthday.
Fantastic service, from the initial greeting, to gathering/searching records, communicating throughout the process, and the final shipping.
I couldn’t be happier with the purchase and the service and my dad is over the moon.
Big shout out to Hugh, who is a stand up guy, dealing with all my questions.
Highly recommend these guys.
A.
I was able to easily purchase a Rhodesian African Rifles Beret from this company. They were clear and concise on insutrctions and were very friendly, the beret is an excellent quality piece and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.
Thank you so much for your services!
N.
Amazing museum, heaps of displays covering all periods. Every one was keen to chat and answer questions. Great selection of memorabilia for sale as well. Will have to bring some family to see it when everyone can travel again
E.
Thanks to Hugh Bomford that managed to get my medal and the lanyard (that I just received), I'm very happy that I could complete a frame collection to keep for my grandchildren. Thank you.
D.
After so many years, my medals had been damaged or lost.
I contacted the Rhodesian Services Association about replacing them and everything progressed so smoothly from there!
Understandably, production takes a fair period to complete and then they were shipped in impressive time from NZ to me in the USA with frequent updates along the way. I am sincerely grateful for their excellent service.
I wonder what else I can order? ;-)
C.
Very amazing people running The Lion and Tusk!
Really good service, I ordered some stuff and got it really fast. And it's all to preserve Rhodesian history!
They have a very good Facebook account and group too!
N.
As someone with a long interest in Zimbabwe, particularly the Rhodesian Army, and who lived and worked in South Africa for 7 1/2 years, I look forward to visiting the museum on my next visit to New Zealand. It looks fascinating.
K.
I have regularly purchased items from the L&T Museum ranging from beret, lapel badges and books. They have always been of excellent quality, dispatched promptly and have all arrived safely in the UK. I highly recommend getting in touch with Hugh Bomford for which nothing is too much trouble and is the epitome of excellent customer service.
All your purchases are also for a very good cause: to gain more customers and visitors to The Lion and Tusk Museum which in turn increases their income and therefore their ability to keep running and improving this great facility. Kevin Graham
S.
I have not (yet) been to visit this museum but recently purchased a number of items from them. The exceptionally friendly and super efficient delivery of high quality products - with great communication throughout - has been wonderful. Thank you.
N.
My dad was in desperate need of replacing some important medals as their 60th RLI celebration is due to take place this year as unfortunately his was stolen. He happened to come across the Rhodesian Services Association on Facebook. So we popped them an email with our enquiry and received a prompt response with all the info we needed. Hugh Bomford has been a great help through the entire process and I thank him for going the extra mile. My dad received his well deserved medals this week and is super chuffed with them. I can't thank The Lion & Tusk Museum/Rhodesian Services Association enough for what they have done.
I highly recommend them! A+++
D.
Bought a camo bush hat from the Lion & Tusk and am very impressed with the quality and service received from the….fast and efficient. Many thanks Hugh and merry Christmas to you all in NZ
B.
Excellent products. Quality was excellent and shipping and customer service was quick and really good. Quick responses to requests for further information and very accommodating.
I.
It is great that there are people who preserve the history of their country. In addition to the museum itself, there is a great store with very interesting things.
J.
I purchased a book from the museum and it was an excellent and professionally produced book. I am very happy with my purchases.
P.
The Rhodesian Services Association Museum and QR Store, with Hugh at the helm, is a unique and very important establishment. Based in Tauranga, in the Port area, it is easy to find - if you know where to look that is - and provides an interesting range of historic and collectable items. It brings back memories of years ago, during my service with BSAP in Rhodesia., before returning home to NZ. My years there were some of the most enjoyable, rewarding and exciting in my service career and in Life in general. For first time visitors I say, you will enjoy a visit to this place. Well done Hugh & Team.
A.
Hugh Bomford and The Lion and Tusk Museum of The Rhodesian Services Association recently assisted me in replacing my RIC beret and receiving two properly mounted service medals for my service in the Rhodesian army during 1978-79.
Thank you Hugh and the Lion and Tusk team for the world-class service I received throughout my journey with you!
I will now wear my beret and service medals proudly at Remembrance Day services in Toronto which I've attended annually since emigrating to Canada.
C.
This Museum is well worth a visit. It is a worthy tribute specifically to those who served but generally to all Rhodesians.
J.
I ordered a few items from the CQ store which arrived very promptly and am delighted with my purchase and great service. The Rhodesia Regiment book is outstanding and is a wonderful collection of history and photos. And the RLI beret was so gratefully received. My old soldier put it on with great pride. Thank you Hugh and team. We hope to visit the museum one day.
I.
I purchased a 3x5 Rhodesian flag from their store and had it shipped overseas. It arrived faster than expected. It came in about two weeks, very fast, the owner was extremely helpful. I would highly recommend shopping there for all your Rhodesian memorabilia. I am grateful my money is going to an organization that preserves Rhodesian history.
M.
Many thanks Hugh, for the prompt replacement and despatch of the Flame Lilly emblem, floppy hat. I am most grateful. I impressed with the efficiency of your system and look forward to the opportunity to visit your Museum, which looks very interesting indeed. You offer us a great service.
R.
Totally dedicated and very helpful, some visitors are there for a couple of hours. They are all volunteers and make the artifacts very interesting.
H.
One of the best little museums I have ever visited. So much to see about the Rhodesian war. History, weapons, military clothing , medals and much more. Will definitely visit it again.
S.
I recently purchased a copy of 'The Rhodesian Regiment'. It is an excellent historical record dating back to the regiment's foundation in 1899 and until being disbanded in 1981. The book clearly shows how valuable this regiment was in providing stability in Southern Africa and beyond. Sadly, and from a personal view, a stability, now 40 years on, is lost. The book is one the children and descendants of Rhodesia can justly feel proud. My grateful thanks to Hugh Bomford and the Rhodesian Services Association for the logistics of getting the book to me at a rural address, in perfect condition and good timing. Great service.
C.
I made my second purchase from the CQ store last week and was again amazed at the level of service and speed of delivery, particularly as the parcel was delivered on a Sunday afternoon!
Hats off to Hugh and the team for doing such a wonderful job. I am hoping to get over to NZ to visit the museum, what I have seen on FB and the website coupled with personal accounts from people who have been there make this a must for the bucket list.
E.
Many thanks to Hugh for helping me to purchase the medal ribbons I need, in order to honour a remarkable man, Tommy Steele, by court mounting his medals. During his 42 years of service, Tommy served with the Royal Marines, Rhodesian Army, South African Navy and South African Army. He was a co-designer of the Cobra, and later went on to design his own TS Series of weapons. Without Hugh's assistance, I would not have been able to honour Tommy for his service.
A.
Great place to visit , a lot of history packed inside this building, I enjoyed myself and will visit again
S.
Thanks to Hugh and The Lion & Tusk Museum, I am now the proud owner of my old military beret and accompanying badges for my uniform. Hugh went to great lengths to secure items that are more than three decades old. I am delighted with the service and my kids think I'm really cool. Thanks Lion & Tusk!
L.
I recently ordered a copy of the book Rhodesia Regiment 1899-1981. Not only is it a fantastic book , but is a must for anyone interested in the regimental history or the Bush War in general. Shipping to Texas was by DHL and it was less than two weeks from the time I ordered until I had the book in my hands.
J.
I am a current serving member in the ADF, and over the years have made use of the services offered by the 'Lion & Tusk Museum of the Rhodesian Services' on many occasions. I have found this organisation to be very professional, always prompt in delivery and prepared to go that extra mile. I highly recommend and support the work they do. (Satisfied Customer)
P.
Rhodesia Regiment - recently bought this outstanding book and what a book it is. Seriously, you won't find a better volume of background, history and purpose of this largely volunteer and conscript army regiment. Thoughtful and insightful, even for one who served in it. Excellently bound and swiftly delivered to me. Highly recommended!
S.
My brother and I have been interested in Rhodesia since the '70's. For his birthday, I looked for something from Rhodesia and stumbled upon The Lion & Tusk Museum. My brother lives in Texas so there was a bit of effort in making sure the items I had ordered made it to him in time. Mr. Hugh Bomford was extraordinarily helpful in completing the order, ensuring the shipping was handled correctly, and offering a bit of Rhodesian history.
The hat and patch that I purchased made it to Texas in record time and gave my brother an exquisite thrill. These items are unique and of excellent quality. I thank Mr. Bomford for his efforts and the museum for keeping the memory alive.
M.
I purchased two items from Hugh at the museum, delivered to Australia within a week recorded delivery. The quality of the two hats and Brushstroke pattern was spot on. The workmanship is top quality. Proud to wear and display my Rhodie wear. Great work team. Ill be back for more.

I've just finished reading The Rhodesia Regiment 1899-1981 and I was blown away by it. With so much discussion, writing and remembrance of Rhodesia laser focused on the 1965-1980 period, we so often forget the preceding years. It was fascinating to me to learn about the contribution that the Regiment and by definition, Rhodesia made in the during the Boer War and both World Wars.
Of particular interest, as a Zimbabwean British Army Veteran, was the Regiment's association with the KRRC, an association that lives on today in spirit in the hundreds, of young Zimbabweans who have and continue to serve in the Royal Green Jackets - a direct descendant of the KRRC. So strong was that connection when I joined in 2000, that the Recruiting Sergeant I first spoke to never even asked me which regiment I would like to join. He just scribbled RGJ at the top of the form! Also the story of Rhodesian farm boys being so used to being in charge of large groups of people that they were naturally suited to leadership positions gave me a chuckle. During my interview at recruit selection, the major interviewing me reeled this off as statement of fact, and "strongly encouraged" me to follow apply for Officer Training after a tour in the ranks.
Despite what I said above, it's natural that the Bush War should dominate and it does. It's high time that, without taking anything away from the elite units, that the contribution of the line infantrymen of the Rhodesia Regiment is recorded. The intensity of the fighting they endured would match and exceed much of that my generation went through in the post-2000 conflicts, and what makes it all the more remarkable is that they were territorials, who had to pack up at the end of each trip and return to civilian jobs and life before doing it all again 6 weeks later. No Territorial Force in modern Western history has had such demands placed on it, for so long and with with so much at stake.
The Rhodesia Regiment was a vital part of the war effort. It's soldiers should justifiably be immensely proud of the unique and immense contribution they made in the war, while keeping the economy not ticking, but thriving. This book does them justice. Congratulations.
H.
Top class service and Rhodesian products for sale. I would encourage anyone with links to Rhodesia or Rhodesiana products, to support one of the last remaining places on the planet showcasing this unique country's history and culture. Hugh's response to email enquiries is outstanding. highly recommended!
P.
I ordered two items from the Lion & Tusk, in NZ, to be delivered to me in the UK.They arrived very quickly and Hugh kept me up to date with the progress. The service I received was the very best. As for the quality, it was as I was expecting from an organisation that promotes to retain record of our history; remember the fallen; honor the brave and to offer moral support and help to former comrades and their families, and they are living up to that.I had ordered one of the items previously from a so called Rhodie site in Canada and never received the item and had to be persuaded through adverse comments on facebook before they would give me a refund.
I am more than happy to give five stars.
S.
I have just received 'Operation Lighthouse' from the Lion & Tusk Museum, the book tells the story of Intaf (Internal Affairs) during The Rhodesian Bush War. The book has arrived at my house from the other side of the world at top speed and in perfect condition. Many thanks and best wishes to the Rhodesian Services Association, you're doing a great job.
C.
Sadly I have not yet been able to visit the Museum but have managed to purchase a number of items from Hugh. The service has always been top class— typical Rhodesian— and when looking at the photographs you are immediately reminded of Rhodesia . A visit to the Museum is definitely top of my bucket list. Sincere thanks to Hugh and his team for keeping the memories alive.
W.
Curators friendly and happy to tell you about the exhibit.
Amazed that they fit all their memorabilia into such a small hangar!
Don't judge it by it's exterior, it's well worth the couple hours spent inside - highly recommend.
S.
Having bought a group of SA medals of the Lion and Tusk museum i would like to thank Hugh for a very efficient and quick response . Hugh has been very helpful in providing me with more information on my Rhodesian medal collection that I am the current custodian. Thank once more .
R.
Have visited several times, staff always very accommodating. Probably the single best resource for Rhodesian history in New Zealand. Museum shop is also well stocked with memorabilia and food and drinks.
B.
An absolutely fabulous experience for all lovers of both history, African history and the development of military skills and equipment by small nations having to overcome large obstacles. The Lion & Tusk museum is akin to stepping into history and experiencing the type of warfare fought most bitterly on the African continent. The weapons, operations and lives of people involved are all there to see in a well presented and maintained war and history museum. If in the area a must to visit.
D.
My sister, who lives in Colorado Springs Stateside, commissioned a replica British Empire Medal to replace the original which somehow became lost and beyond being located again.
She asked me to assist and I engaged with Hugh Bomford.
He, and the team at The Lion and Tusk, sourced a replacement for a really sharp price and couriered the medal to Liz in record time.
Excellent service - many thanks.
If you want / need any assistance with medals give Hugh a yell - I highly recommend him to you.
S.
I recently purchased the Rhodesia Regiment book from the fine folks at RSA. Smooth transaction all the way though. Great communication, and the book was across the Pacific and to my house in five days.
T.
We are so pleased with our recent purchases from the Lion and Tusk Museum and were very impressed with the packaging and delivery of the items which came in under 24 hours.

OPERATION LIGHTOUSE, Intaf in the Rhodesian Bush War 1972-1980 by Gerry van Tonder & Dudley Wall 512 pages, a review by J.P. Young
Van Tonder and Wall's well written account not only stands as a factual account of the dedicated white and black Africans of the Ministry of Internal Affairs ('Intaf') but can be taken as a history of Rhodesia itself. Their book is well illustrated and documented concluding with appendixes of the Roll of Honour of those who were killed and the citations for the limited amount of decorations 'the Men from the Ministry' earned, often at the cost of their own lives. The authors provide a glossary of terms, details of uniforms, weapons, and insignia, a wide variety of photographs in colour and black and white and an easy to read text. My only quibble is that an index would have been appreciated by this reviewer.
OPERATION LIGHTHOUSE is a must for not only any student of African and other wars, but anyone interested in the problems facing administrators who find themselves in deadly situations who adapt with a mixture of initiative, courage and a never say die mindset.

I recently took my mother and who had close ties with the Rhodesian military as her father was an officer and her brother was in the BSAP, as well as my father who was a Military Policeman during the later part of the war.
Having such close connections to events of the day my mother was blown away by the items on display and the care and sensitivity taken to display them, and in a way the some of the items could be interacted with such as the Allouette helicopter.
Just like the small country of Rhodesia they have packed a lot into their small museum.
R.
Visited The Lion and Tusk Museum pre Covid, very impressed by the comprehensive history of a part of Africa. Hugh Bomford was very knowledgeable and informative when showing us around. A lot of time and effort must have gone into collecting and setting up all the exhibits.Have also purchased memorabilia and books from the Lion and Tusk Museum. Products arrived promptly and as ordered.
R.
Great service from really knowledgable people who also happen to be really nice. Can't recommend highly enough.
D.
Outstanding museum! One of a kind in the world and a must see when in New Zealand. There is none like it any where in this world. Honest and concise collection of Rhodesian history of the conflict.
M.
Absolutely fantastic museum I can't recommend a visit enough. Staff are very knowledgeable about the history and exhibits and there are displays that don't exist anywhere else in the world. Will definitely be going back regularly.
T.
I have recently purchased a number of items from the CQ Store and I cannot fault Hugh for his service and attention to detail. I would thoroughly recommend the CQ Store for Rhodesian Military and other memorabilia,
J.
Great place to visit if you are interested in Rhodesian history, kids loved jumping in the chopper and was nice to see so much from that era.
Got some great buys from the QC store, will definitely visit again

The Lion and Tusk Association is an excellent source of accurate and well researched information on Rhodesian history and is operated by dedicated and professional members who seek to preserve and present events of that era for the knowledge of future generations. Thank you to those involved .
R.
Very professional service from the start, emails explained in detail and answered quickly, product safely posted and efficient delivery, great job
D.
Excellent compact museum. A must see for anyone with interest in relatively recent military history, the cold war as fought out by proxy in a part of Africa, a multi-faceted clash of cultures, the end of the British Empire, and part of the background to the economic and counter –democratic disaster that is modern day Zimbabwe. Courage, savagery, atrocities, the Battle of Britain spirit, the murderous hand of international geo politics, a small lost world the memory of which is about to vanish into the sands of time.
We are blessed to have this resource available in New Zealand. Comprehensive and accessible exhibits, videos and library. Close to the Classic Flyers Museum.
m.
I have always had first class service with the Rhodesian Services association since being a member, Whatever the request whether it be from the CQ store or just an enquiry for information the reply has almost been instant, also the communication, ease of payment packing and shipping of orders can not be faulted My thanks to Hugh Bomford and the Services staff for keeping alive the Rhodesian military history for all those that had a connection i.e. either for personal involvement and /or for family and friends, not forgetting future generations
B.
I purchased a number of small items for posting to the UK, on time, to cost and quality, excellent service. I also recently purchased 2 rugby shirts, again an outstanding service and exceptionally please with the quality of the shirts
L.
This is a great little museum. As an ex Rhodesian I am glad that someone cares enough to make a memorial to the Rhodesian services who are not represented anywhere else that I know of. I will; be telling anyone who I think may be interested about it.
