T.We really enjoyed taking this tour! FANTASTIC tour given by Russel, Very informative and knowledgeable guide. If you like to know the heritage and history of mining in Thames and NZ, Highly recommend visiting this place . The school is in as is condition from 1950s and has an artistic and nostalgic appeal to it. the tour has 3 parts and takes about an hour to complete!

C.Great stop while in Thames and a real learning experience. Would love to go back again without the kids so I can spend more time there. The rock shop has a good variety of polished rocks at cheap prices compared to other shops.

C.A must visit when you are in Thames, staff have great knowledge of the early mining history of the area and the importance of gold to the early settlers in the area. Interesting shop selling a great variety of rock & semi precious jewellery. Charles Boyle 18/3/2021
J.I was so happy to discover that over a year later, the rock shop was still open, after believing that it had closed around covid-19. Some of my best raw crystals and rocks have been brought here.
P.Historical School of Mines was established in 1886. They have the original building on site and offer tours of the minerals museum and the original school. You can pan for gold and buy beautiful polished gemstones at the shop. Worth a look if you are interested.
O.An amazing museum that's well worth a visit for anyone coming to Thames. 10/10 would visit again.

J.Great place to visit, took the school mines tour for $10 free for children, very interesting if you like mining or just plain old NZ History. Nice little shop with books, maps and rocks for rock hounds not too expensive.
M.Good collection of mineral specimens although some of the sulphides are abut tarnished. Good rock shop out the back.
