We approach this from the railway cafe end & walked across the bridge.Walked all around this interesting site while my fellow walk mates did a long walk up the track.
Very photogenic & being mid week nobody else around.
The history is amazing & well placed signage to tell you all about the area.
Lovely area by the bridge to have a picnic on a hot day.
A.
Rode the cycle track today visiting the Historic Battery Tramway. Second time doing this. Absolutely Recommend. Cannot Recommend enough. Fascinating history. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING SCENERY 😍 Get on your bike and enjoy or walk it. My dog also loves this bike track.
S.
A very interesting place to learn some mining history plus a great walk or you can bike the trails in safety.
A.
Awesome location great for kids, the whole family or even the lone history buff explorer!
M.
We did the trio activity: museum, tram ride and tunnel guide tour. Small mining museum which narrates the local history from the 19th century. The tram is an awesome way to explore the surrounding, specially if you have kids, they loved. The mining tunnel is a 200m walk which gave us a brief history of the early gold explorers. The guide was telling us that many miners lost their thumb purposely to receive cash as indemnification and bought houses with that. The weather was great and we could walk up to the Waikino cafe to rest before heading home. Worth a visit to this little museum!
W.
A lovely place to visit and see the history of the gold mining days.
R.
Excellent walk around.
Full of History,
Went for a guided tour through the old mine.
Museum is a must
A.
Steeped in history.. this place is well worth a visit especially the museum. The museum is run by volunteers who do a great job and are so passionate about sharing their stories and knowledge about the gold mining days of old. They are very informative and most obliging especially late on a Sunday when we visited.
M.
Such an awrsome place to go to. Took the kids and keept them entertained for hours. Lots to look at. We also went for a ride on the tram and browesd the musem. Lots of history to learn about the area too. The musem and tram is very affordable too.
A.
Wonderful place to get a mixture of fresh air, beautiful nature and education on NZs rich historical gold mines. There's a museum, train ride and a cave tour for those inclined for cheap prices.
F.
After discovering how gold was mined in waihi we parked at the waikino over-ride and biked along to see the battery. Had a quick ride on the tram I think it was $10 per adult and $5 per child. The tram ride was something the kids totally enjoyed... we biked all the way to the karangahake gorge tunnel
C.
Great place to visit and read about the old battery that was there. We often go here as part of cycling the Hauraki trail, which is an amazing bike ride.
C.
its a nice walk if u need a bit of fresh air in ur lungs..and learn a bit of history while exercising..its really lovely along the river..and the old mining town is very interesting to read the history of what they had to do in the old days..the pics of the miners looked hard working men..i bet they delt with alot of hardship just to get through each day to earn a wage..worth the walk for a look..
G.
A short walk from historic Waikino Rail Station in the Waihi Gold district. Well worth the short historic walk. The gold making museum is well worth the cost for the experienced guide.
L.
good place for a industry history research, walking, bicycle rides. Very nice place to take a rest during your long drive.
田.
Great hostorical place! Time can wipe many things but not everything. The stories can be smelled from the rust.
G.
Easy access both from the road and hauraki rail trail definitely worth a look and wonder at what went on here and the whole area
K.
Cool little stop while biking past, we only pulled over for little break with dogs but was really interesting
J.
Very cool! A must visit if you are in the area. Easy to access and lots to look at and learn about. We enjoyed our visit.
C.
Really interesting place full of history regarding the gold mining era. Perfect place to have a picnic.
A.
we got to go under ground with torches and helmets thru old gold tunnel. the museum was really interesting and the volunteers had great knowledge which they shared with us. reasonably priced and completed our days experience.
C.
A good dip into the areas history. Informative signage.
A.
Great place to wonder with the family and have a picnic. The small railway operates mainly in the weekend, 10am till 3pm. I enjoyed history of the area and the ruins. A lot of history is explained as you walk around the area.
M.
Amazing slice of history tucked away.
k.
Definitely worth a look at local history. So glad we stopped to take the time
S.
Excellent museum and old gold battery to visit for the whole family. A ride on the train is an added bonus.
Very helpful and friendly volunteers with a wealth of knowledge will show you how things worked and ready to answer any questions.
J.
One of the most fantistic place u can find in NZ! just like Laputa!
C.
Very interesting place. Lots of relics and history. A mere shadow of the activity there over a hundred years ago.
K.
Great for a little adventure with the family
D.
Free entry, interesting insight into the gold mining industry here over 100 years ago, from a few boards up around the place. Museum not open, think you may have to book.
j.
Would have been a great deal more interesting to have more knowledge on the past and the present, and if I may say so myself, the rusty bits of iron and steel laying around seems quite concerning as to the saftey and structure of some rusty falling to bits and away from the Battery cone shaped building that once stood....
Besides that what a fab place to have visited on my holiday
G.
Thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Welcoming staff who told us alot about the goldmining processes that happened here and were happy to answer all our questions. Very interesting little museum. A fascinating area.
K.
A must see is the ore kilns .an easy gradient through the pine trees , then down the steps . this feature is not always noticed by the casual visitor .please resist the urge to throw litter into the fire brick lined cavities . also spectacular arches under the cyanide tanks .abandoned machinery features the drums from the washer ,and dryer from the largest commercial laundry in the world (at the time ) Also a must is to take the children for a ride on the miniature choo choo train ( week ends ) Dog friendly , please clean up Also free blackberries (in season ) Period photos around the site will give an indication of the battery in the glory ( ?) years .
C.
Such an amazing place to visit
F.
Easy flat walk unless you climb to the museum
M.
As luck would have it we explored the site on a Wednesday when the museum is open!! It is in the old power station and that day was manned by 3 volunteers who gave us a fantastic tour of the site and the kilns. They were awesome and very knowledgeable and were assisted by two gorgeous cats who guard the building from rats and mice! All in all a great afternoon. Thanks again to the volunteers!!
E.
Awesome place for a photo shoot, some really cool structures with some interesting history behind it.
L.
Amazing that this site was working up till 1950.
k.
cool spot to visit
short walk to reach or you can drive to it. signage is sparse and didnt really show where you were or going on the carpark map. . Doesnt really show where dogs are allowed.
D.
Amazing place to visit. Great to walk there or ride from the karangahake gorge bike trail. I strongly recomend taking some pictures there as the light creates some amazing effects as it streams through the rusted holes in the remains. Well worth a visit
L.
This is an amazing place of History, Here lies the once massive battery. The Bottom of the cyanide tanks still stand and it is an great place to explore. There is an Museum there where you can find out the history of the place and down the Rail Trail there is an bridge to the the Goldflied's Railway which can take you to Waihi. Great place to stop for a break on the rail trail or even start here on the rail trail as it halfway.
M.
FANTASTIC hide away of Waikato. One of great road trips in nz. Shame so short.
Lot's fun.
Little kids loved train. Take a drive people
L.
I loved scrambling around the ruins and seeing where mining work took place long ago. People might think it was safer there than in the mines but it wasn't all good at all. Many suffered from illnesses due to the harsh chemicals used and the amount of rock and earth dust inhaled. Then think about the damage to hearing as well.
There's a museum in walking distance and the little railway to enjoy with the Victoria Battery one of the sites to view.
P.
Great place, you get a better understanding of how it all worked. I recommend the tour through the cave.
D.
Must busy place great exploring and some informative signs. Some very pretty walks around the area.
J.
Really amazing
Thank you volunteers for your hard work
M.
Unexpected stop for us really nice walk even on a closing day walking along the railway and discovering the treasures of the golden past. Up the museum don’t miss to walk up the stairs and find the impressive big holes of the mine
J.
What an entrancing place! Can't wait to return.
S.
Needs some more info & signage and maps explaining the processes and what the ruins were used for.
There are 3 basic public toilets located about 100m away toward the east of Victoria battery.
Also I don't recommend taking the road from the Owharoa Falls turnoff as it's frequently crowded with pedestrians and cyclists. Better to park opposite the Waikino Tavern and take the small foot-bridge over.
T.
Interesting place. Great walks
D.
I love this place. I have visited it many times and each time find out something new. The information boards around the area share very interesting facts about the history of the area and the building relics provide some very interesting photos.
R.
Take the kiln tour - it is really amazing the lengths they went to to get the gold out
M.
Excellent industrial history. The guys at the tramway are very knowledgeable
I.
Nice walk across the historic site, could however benefit from a few signs that would explain what each building remain was for and how it all worked. Museum building is on site as well.
S.
The Battery has a sense of wilderness and intrigue - I enjoyed the discovery of scattered mining equipment beside the paths meandering up to the Museum and further on to the open Roasting Kiln. Lots of abstract photo’s I will be back to join the tours offered.
J.
Great spot for ride or walk. Lots of history to take in and beutiful spot altogether.

J.
Even during covid there was plenty of people safely distancing and enjoying the ruins. Cool place
J.
It's a nice walk from the carpark or on the rail trail by bike, lots of info around and old photos. Public toilets available onsite
D.
Relics of gold mining days with lots of concrete and the remains of large cyanide tanks. Interesting information board with comment about the relative wealth of the company and poverty of the workers.
T.

(Translated) The place looks a bit like a ghost town. You can visit but only on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, I went during the week. Even if there is not much left, this site recalls the adventure of the 19th century gold diggers. The place is therefore not without interest and it is along a beautiful walk to do on the route of an abandoned railroad. I'll be back.
(Original)

(Translated) Rest of an old gold factory. Few elements restored. Some panels to trace the history of the place. But the train station and the bike circuit are worth the trip. You can get there by taking the train or by the bike path. Electric bike rental in town. It's worth it because the circuit is quite long.
(Original)
Reste d une ancienne usine d or.

(Translated) Nice for history, the history of New Zealand. But neither is it an extraordinary site. We don't come here on purpose to see that. That said, I went there and I was happy to see this place and read what happened there. ... a kiwi invention that has been exported all over the world ...
