Reviews of Nga Manu Nature Reserve
j.
Absolutely incredible nature walk. Its almost like walking back in time! Place is thriving with wild life that you can get very up close with. Great staff. Highly recommend everyone in the Wellington region to come out and see this magnificent place!
D.
My 6 yr old and I went twice this week. We had a lovely relaxed time. It has lots of shady areas for beautiful sunny days. Staff are friendly and informative. My son loved being able to feed the eels.
S.
Ngā Manu nature reserve offers a wonderful NZ native flora and fauna experience and a memorable time with family. Affordable entrance tickets & free tours available.
B.
What a beautiful, serene place to spend a day. Beautifully maintained. Easy walking for all ages. Fantastic picnic areas with a bonus bbq. Staff are cheerful & helpful.
C.
What a beautiful place...
I want to take my son there to experience all of what nature has to bring us. He's in love with animals so bad it's a must. But at the moment he's on holiday with his mum. We worked there the last couple of weeks and again this week on Tuesday 18th January, clearing the blackberry. It's not to bad once a system is in place to bag it all up. No worries. Looking forward to going back, oh and water is a must people. Cheers!
m.
Great place to educate kids and adults alike. Enclosures where kaka, kea and weka are in free flight. Can take good close up pictures
V.
Cute park with many bird enclosures and sightseeing opportunities. Their Kiwi bird enclosure is amazing, windows from 2 opposite sides and if the bird decides to go for a walk, it's light enough for you to actually see it (which is not something you can say about many places).
The forest walk is easy and nice. There's many picnic tables and even a decent barbecue area you can hire.
a.
We had our wedding here, the venue was great, the staff were extra helpful, and the gorgeous native forest made it beautiful. Would also recommend the eel feeding if you want something a bit different in your life.
B.
Awesome place we took the bird feeding tour and we all enjoyed the bird interaction and the info from the guide was interesting.. things you just dont know.. kids loved it feeding ducks and a lookout which overlooks the reserve and cool bush walk..keas and blue ducks and kereru.. photos next time for sure.. highly recommend a visit
R.
Great place to learn and have a family picnic
M.
Wonderful midweek morning spent at Ngā Manu with my son. Easy to navigate with a buggy, plenty of green space for picnicking & the ducks were a treat to watch for my babe. Worth multiple visits.
S.
Lovely little gem up the coast featuring preserved coastal swampland on very well maintained, easy walks
Highly recommend covering yourself in bug spray at the office (plenty available to use freely) as, once again, it’s a swamp
Staff were all very friendly and informative, and there’s some nice aviaries with kea, kākā, and other natives—plus lots of geckos!
A visit takes about 2 hours at a leisurely pace, so plenty of time to do other Kāpiti area activities
C.
Amazing place full of nature, love taking the family down for a day trip. Lovely picnic areas. Kids enjoy the eel feeding. Staff are always nice and very knowledgeable.
L.
Visited today and had a lovely time. The reserve has a lovely community feeling and this is reflected with the helpful staff and volunteers. Highly recommend buying a few bags of duck feed and spending times around the lake feeding the wildlife. The kiwi nocturnal area is very interesting and we were lucky to witness 2 kiwis foraging. We also enjoyed the talk and viewing at 2pm of the eels. We were also really lucky to see the release of some “Theo” ducklings into a new area with a pond. The bush walk and all paths throughout are all wheel chair and pushchair friendly. Highly recommend a visit to support this lovely little reserve. Well done to all the staff and volunteers, your doing a great job!
S.
Visited the kiwis last night, a truly wonderful experience. The guys who took us through were very informative and happy to share their knowledge. A very special evening and fascinating memories of New Zealand's special jewels.
M.
Very family-friendly. Birds for Africa (friendly & clearly well fed), eel feeding was really interesting & a highlight for the kids. Nice, easy native bush walk (about 30 minute round trip, gentle stroll. Bring your mozzie repellent though.). Didn't see the nocturnal enclosure this time. Something to look forward to next time.
K.
Had a great afternoon here with 4 grandchildren. So nice to be able to sit in the aviaries and have the birds flying over you and to get photos of them without wire in the photos. Enjoyed seeing the eels get fed and learned a lot about them. Kids loved feeding the ducks. Tui sounds echoed round you as you walked through the bush. Reasonable price for entry and for a snack afterwards. We'll be back.
S.
Great place to visit, go for a walk, see the kiwi, tuatara and all sorts of other bird life. Plenty of parking and super friendly staff.
K.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Great spot to enjoy with family. Plenty of space for a picnic.
P.
A really awesome spot and well worth the tiny entry price. It's a nice easy walk and birds of so many species are easy to spot outside of the displays
T.
Such a beautiful reserve loved the walks, scenery, enclosures especially the nocturnal enclosure getting to see the kiwi up and about. Amazing, friendly staff too. Will definitely be going back.
P.
Awesome place. Great place to take the kids, took my 3 year old and 10 month old and they were both kept entertained the entire time. The bush walk is very peaceful and the birds and eels love a good feed
P.
Now this is the place to take your family if you want them to learn a lot about wild life especially eels and the like also birds names of the trees and how to identify some of the species.
P.
This is such a beautiful place and the bird life is amazing. A must see for tourists and kiwis alike. Take the kids and have a picnic.
m.
So tranquil, beautifully laid out walking tracks, with lush, pristine New Zealand native bush. The bird encounters are fantastic (at the time there were some Kaka that could hop close to you). So good to bring your children here, with a chance to feed the huge, old eels.
A fantastic place to visit, to support our native reserves and preserve them for future generations.
E.
I always enjoy visiting Nga Manu. The wildlife there keeps the kids entertained while its mostly the landscaping there that interests me. Nga Manu goes to show what can be achieved with native plants, where there are multiple locations that have a serene beauty to them that is hard to find elsewhere. It reminds me of Otari Wilton Bush which has similar qualities in its spaces.
K.
What a wonderful place! Easy access for the disabled with lovely surrounds. The boys really loved watching the eels being fed & trying to spot the geckos.
The nocturnal exhibit was marvellous & we really enjoyed our picnic amongst the ducks & their gorgeous pond.
Highly recommended
C.
Good fun to meet nz native birds and reptiles. Some cheeky birds are even playing with you. :) I even saw a kiwi bird which was energetically moving around.
Wide place to do picnic and bbq facilities also provided.
Quiet calm bush walk also guaranteed.
Small gift shop prices are reasonable and have a ‘Kapiti’ ice block after walk was great too.
E.
I love Nga Manu! Fun for the whole family. We spent about 3 hours there last weekend and it was awesome. This place is great value 👍.
J.
Peaceful and serene; a great way to spend a few hours on a nice day. Great for kids and adults alike
V.
What an amazing experience at the Kiwi Night Encounter. You get up close and personal with kiwis in their natural habitat as an observer in their own little world. Educational, informative and really quite exciting to see these otherwise shy and reclusive birds wandering around, feeding and socializing. Thanks to Robin and Brian for their kiwi hospitality, this is highly recommended and quite unique.
c.
Beautiful peaceful place to visit with lots of native flora and fauna. Well worth a visit, picnic and child friendly.
V.
wonderful family fun -- excellent environment for the birds and wildlife. Great staff & interactive displays
M.
We went with our 10 year old granddaughter to Night Encounters. Kevin presented with wife Jill's assistance. Then off to meet the Kiwi in non-public area. Did not disappoint. Would recommend. Not for the flippity jibberts who expect things to happen quickly. Kids under 8-9 might struggle with duration of quiet and stillness required. Very pleased we paid the money and went.
E.
Lovely walks, space top enjoy nature and wildlife, great for a picnic. Lots to explore for the kiddies. Will return again, looking forward to seeing the new kiwi enclosure being developed. Beautiful scenery, well maintained and very peaceful.
B.
Great nature reserve with plenty of native bird life. Nice place to go and relax
P.
Nice walk, plenty of space for a picnic.wonderful place for children, family
D.
Small nature reserve with beautiful picnic areas, a short but beautiful forest walk and a selection of bird aviaries. Also you can't forget the very 'friendly' ducks. The enclosures need a bit of updating to maximise the public and animal interaction but will worth a visit.
R.
We really enjoyed th walk an seeing th geckos an birds an th kids really enjoyed th eel feeding
S.
Great place for a day trip, pack a picnic and take the kids 👌
J.
Loved the night visit on the 1st of May.
My wife was in her wheelchair and it was nice to know there was plenty of help on hand if required. The walk n talk, the singing, the smell of the bush, the actors, was all great. Thank you.
M.
Great asset for Kapiti. Beautiful grounds with some rare and wonderful wildlife.
J.
5 stars all round, perfect place to chill with the kids for an afternoon, great how close you can get to the birds
B.
Lovely walks. Nice picnic areas. We were a little disappointed in wildlife exhibits tho plenty of ducks, etc. Eels feed time 2pm
Lots parking. Toilets. Ice cream available.
C.
Lovely native nature reserve, great to do with kids. Robyn went above and beyond yesterday helping us find a painted stone to swap for an Easter egg! And she amazing tui whispering skills too :)
D.
Lovely spot to wander. The small walk-in aviaries allow for clear views of kaka, kea and keruru. Plenty of tui, ducks and keruru in the grounds as well. Lookout is worth the climb.
T.
What a relaxing place really enjoyed the bush walk and very good pricing. A treasure.
J.
Beautiful place for the family. Both kids and adults loved it!
M.
Just a wonderful place to relax in nature and a beautiful location to introduce children to wildlife in there natural habitat... Not to forget the tree top lookout
t.
An absolutely beautiful place to have a day out with the family and easy to get to
C.
We went as a couple (no kids) and got our money's worth! Nice pathways to explore with lots of signs explaining plants and animals. We loved seeing the birds up close, especially since we got quite a good look at the kiwi in the nocturnal house!
We went to the eel feeding as well and took advantage of the picnic spots for a quick lunch we brought with us. Very relaxed and was not crowded. We spent about 2.5hrs. Would recommend!
N.
Love birds and you will live this place. Easy access, wander around and explore it all.
S.
As a family of 4 we LOVED the Kiwi Night encounter. Truly an experience of a lifetime. Staff we knowledgeable and friendly, and very accommodating to our needs. I strongly recommend to all New Zealanders and visitors. We are so grateful for this opportunity.
A.
We enjoyed our visit. Saw tuatara, kea and kaka as well as going on a bush walk
N.
I love this place❤️❤️❤️
H.
Nice bush walk and lots of birds to see plus tuatara. They have a programme to breed endangered birds which is good to support with your entry fee. Excellent for children.
D.
The team at Nga Manu have created a great sanctuary that is definitely worth a visit!
L.
We called into this reserve on a trip to Wellington and was on a time restraint and so wasnt able to walk around the reserve. We did however pay to do the 11am tour to feed the birds. We had a very knowledgeable and pleasant young man called Mathew as our tour guide. Though there are limited birds it was the best views of kiwi we have ever had. We will be back at some point to walk the reserve. Call and support this little gem.
Y.
Wonderful nature reserve, featuring native animals of NZ. The walk was handicapped accessible, and animals are easily viewed for people of all abilities. Very children friendly, feed available for the birds. Great family outing for children.
T.
Good place to visit on sunny day.close to the nature.
J.
My 2 y.o. loved this place. Although the tsunami of ducks can be a bit overwhelming for some smaller children. Really wish they still had the owls, but understand why they don't. Hand sanitizers and insect repellent are a must!
M.
Quite impressive to see Kiwi, Tuatara, Kea, and lots of other beautiful native and endangered species. Nice friendly staff and a very knowledgable tour guide. Great learning experience for all :)
F.
Lovely place for the whole family, trails are not too long and buggy friendly for smaller kids. Lots of ducks to feed(just buy duck food on site) and facilities for picnics. Lovely seeing many of the birds in their natural environment. Shop also has some great souvenirs and toys for the little ones as well as books.
C.
This is a great place to take the kids and just have a nice relaxing stroll. The ducks were my highlight as they are super friendly and if you purchase a bag of duck food they will eat it out of your hand and are not afraid at all. The eels were a little disappointing, I thought you would be able to see them swimming in clear water but as the pond is stagnant it's hard to see them and they are well fenced off. Maybe a bridge would be a better idea?
Lastly, it's somewhat expensive but they do offer a yearly pass which is good value if you are considering coming back. Overall, not bad place to visit.
C.
Tranquil and interesting. Birds are in excellent condition as are the grounds. Their enclosures are well kept and suitable for the occupants. I like that you can stay overnight. I would like that the cafe had more to eat and was open longer. I would settle for sachet coffee and cake or sandwich.
A.
Very nice park for adults and children.
B.
Excellent for a family outing, take a picnic and feed the ducks and eels. On the day we went we sighted lots of birds and butterflies. Informative displays. Bush paths are flat and well maintained with plenty of seats scatted around.
R.
Lovely nature spot with interesting birds, animals and walking tracks. Eel feeding was fun but very difficult to watch as the bushes and small pond plus fencing makes it hard to get a good vantage point (so get there early).
Being within the greater Wellington region the only thing lacking is a cafe!
G.
Worth going for a look. Nice walk, saw the kiwi, fed the eels, would recommend for a kids group
R.
It's one of our family sanctuaries. Just an amazing oasis of peace and calm. Very happy supporters of a Reserve that seems to truly know how to look after its animals. (None of us are zoo fans). Wonderful, helpful and very kind staff who make time to answer questions intelligently. Take a blanket, a book, a thermos of tea or coffee - and you're sorted for a few hours. Just don't mind the ducks...
J.
This reserve is a great place to see native flora and fauna. Everything is well maintained and user friendly.
Loved the time we spent there.
c.
Always a peaceful place for a walk full of nature to nurture your soul
Z.
Lovely place for a family day out.
A bit pricey but is ok for one off visit.
L.
Very nice place. We have taken many people from New Zealand as well as people from overseas here who have enjoyed it. Loved the tame tui that would fly around with you as you walked in the cage, Not sure where it is now. If you haven't been its well worth the visit.
Y.
Feel it's a bit pricey. Perhaps if it was less costly I'd visit more often as it is a nice walk & scenery.
T.
Always a lovely place to spend a day, and the Kiwi Night Encounter is truly amazing. The staff are really passionate and knowledgeable about New Zealand flora and fauna.
A.
Went at easter.they had a children's promotion.children hunted for painted rocks and swapped for an Easter egg. Bird song was nice.paths easy walking
B.
Good place for protecting animals with lots of rabbits
D.
Eel feeding is super cool. Wonderful bush walk and the kids always have fun feeding ducks. A must visit on the kapiti coast
L.
We used to go here every few weeks for years, it's still great. Very well maintained, and a great way to get out into the bush, not far from suburbia. Very good value for money every time, and a great range of wildlife.
L.
Lovely nature reserve with a good range of native birds - including some very friendly kaka! The kea enclosure is great, nice to be able to walk through with them. The kiwi was also super active when we visited. Eel feeding is fun for the kids, it's at set times so check the website if you want to do that. Bring your own picnic lunch - the shop only has a limited range of pre-packaged foods. They could do with a cafe. The staff are really knowledgeable - great for school trips.
C.
Special place 5 mins from Waikanae (north of Wellington). We paid 25.00 each for a tour guide (Scott) who we followed round as he was feeding the birds. Scott was very good. The highlight was the nocturnal kiwi habitat. Also short hiking trails available. We will visit again. Thanks Scott!
B.
A beautiful place to walk in the sun, picnic with the kids & ducks, and search for geckos, tuatara, eels, kiwi and a few birds. I have to admit, I had high expectations taking my baby and 5 year old... it wasn't as cool as I remembered - but that maybe just a boring adult perspective. Definitely take your own food, there's no cafe, but it's picnic perfect and bbq's are available.
J.
Children's day, lovely walk with the kids
D.
Really nice place. Kids enjoyed the close encounters with the animals. Great way to sneak a bit of exercise into the kids day.
H.
Great place to take the kids to walks. Pram friendly. It would be great if they had a small cafe close by or site but you can always head down to the beachfront after a nice walk and feeding the ducks.
L.
We attended a good wedding.
A.
This visit was amazing. Not only did we see rare birds and reptiles and that are and rare plants like mistletoe and others we also saw stick insects, puriri larvae and Weta in the wild....this reserve is well worth the visit and admission was very reasonable. My suggestion would be to take a picnic lunch with you.
N.
A great place to let the kids run around. The bush boardwalk is awesome, as is the tower lookout. Also birds to see and eels to feed. Great for getting a look at a kiwi.
A.
Lovely environment, staff and volunteers were helpful. Great views from the tower and the bird life was amazing. Very peaceful.
D.
Good easy walk, lots to see
D.
Lovely laid out nature reserve. Enjoyed feeding the eels. Saw lots of birds and reptiles. Even got to see the kiwis. Value for money. Ideal for families
P.
Stunning place and so user friendly to special needs children and caregivers. Always a pleasure to walk the paths, see the birds and the lookout view!
J.
Enjoyed showing our visiting overseas students. Great to feed the birds and eels and see the kiwi. Lovely spots for a picnic.
R.
Great place to visit. Feeding the eels it's cool and something completely different to other places I've been. Good forest walk and my daughter loved feeding the ducks
B.
A beautiful quiet spot incorpating wetlands and old-growth forest that gives you a chance to get up close and personal with the birds. Good value for money and all the revenue goes right back into looking after the place so you know it's money well-spent.
C.
Went to a wedding here. Perfect place for a wedding. Beautiful setting. All made much more exciting, especially for the kids, by the eel feeding session. Absolutely gorgeous place
j.
Gem outside of Wellington....tranquility personified one with nature
A.
Expected to see more birds but was a lovely place to visit
T.
Better signage describing the vegetation and highlighting points of interest would be great. The cages containing various animals and insects need improving and visibility in many is poor.
j.
Great place to visit and the staff were fantastic.
J.
Great family friendly place to spend a few hours. Walks were pleasant and not taxing at all.
G.
The kiwis, morepork, tuataras and eel feeding & talk were very interesting and fun. Then we lucked out with a free bush walk guided tour with Robin - she was unbelievably fantastic!!! - a fountain of knowledge and was able to answer every question - just outstanding. Couldn't have had a better time! Thanks so much!

We took our Grand-kids for the day. Unique experience. Paid extra to go on the Bird Feed Out Tour. This was brilliant. The highlight was the hand reared Tui who had no fear of humans would feed from your hand, sit on your shoulder and probe your ear cavities. We are told they are considering releasing this bird into the wild. My concern is not only is this bird one of their major draw-cards, given it's tameness I have concerns about it's ability to survive in the wild. The Kiwis, Tuataras et-al make this a wonderful asset for the country. The bush walk with tree identification labels is brilliant for teaching those not lucky enough to experience education from Scouts etc. I suggest taking a picnic lunch to fill in time while waiting for the Eel feeding. Brilliant selection of picnic areas among the native bush.
S.
Interesting walking paths and trails, pack a picnic if you are headed here, so that you can enjoy the picnic spots!
S.
Really interesting place to visit. Easy tracks to walk around on. Cafe there.
Birds and other animals.
Staff very informative.
Time goes quickly.
S.
Really nice quiet place. Easy to walk around. The Kea were great fun to watch and play with. They're very gentle and will take the fruit from you hand.
E.
Gina & I really enjoyed our visit yesterday, If you are looking for great place to visit, We highly recommend Ngu Manu Nature Reserve, in Waikanae.
At 11am we set off with Joanne on the bird feeding tour around the aviaries, which Gina and I thoroughly enjoyed, it was very informative and we got to feed the birds. The tour is a must do, if you have the time.
We saw Kakariki (NZ Parakeet) Kaka, Kea, Scaup (diving ducks) Kiwi, plus many more. We also saw the Tuatara (rare NZ reptile).
After the tour was over, we walked around some more of the reserve. We saw many more species of birds including Tui , White faced heron and Monarch butterflies on swan plants. We then made our way up to the lookout tower, the views were amazing. We also visited, Fern Island, Preservation Island and BBQ Island the only things we didn’t get to finish were the bush walk and to feed the eels.
Elayne, Brightchic Photography & Day Trips for the Uninspired.

(Translated) Very nice park, we were involved in bird feeding, this is done very informatively, the birds (e.g. Kea) also come to the people, we really enjoyed it! We could also see the kiwis in the night house so well! And at a really reasonable price ($ 25 per person).
