We had a wonderful morning on the steam engine with our 3.5 year old and 15 month old. Our 15 month old little girl enjoyed the train ride a lot more than I expected. The ride itself is not too long, very pleasant. Despite the heat would put the kids in closed toe shoes next time we visit - can’t wait to visit again.

We had a steam train return journey booked for us 4 adults and the 2 minis and it was a glimpse of how things were done in years gone by. 🚂
All the people that work there and look after the constant influx of visitors are volunteers and are so lovely. Their outfits really make you feel like you've stepped back in time, and we really enjoyed our trip chug-chugging over lush farmland with the whistle blowing and hissing as we went. We were in the last outside carriage so despite being enveloped in black coal steam.. 🤭 ..it was nice to feel the wind rush by on this swelteringly hot day.
J.
What an absolutely amazing experience! This is something I have been wanting to do for years, and just never got round to, especially since the train only runs on weekends and holidays ❤
The Glenbrook Vintage Railway was founded in 1970 to preserve, rebuild, and operate the old Waiuku Branch Railway between Glenbrook and Waiuku 🛤
Once you step through the gates, you are magically transformed to a golden era that captures everyone's hearts 🚂
I had a bit of a coffee and cake break while waiting for the train. Although it doesn't seem like much, it was actually quite delicious 🍰☕
Everyone, young and old, was buzzing with excitement when we heard the loudwhistle and saw the steam train coming into the station.
There are different classes of carts. The first is the parlour car or their first class guests. This is where you can enjoy a high tea. 🥮🍥 Unfortunately it sells out very fast, and I missed out. Then there are 2nd and 3rd class carts, and an open air cart. The seats are not allocated and you can sit where you want, and move between carts (not the parlour car) 🚞
It runs between Glenbrook and Waiuku. At the other end you have the option to get off and explore the town, and get on a later returning train. On the journey back, it stops at the workshop, where you can see the inner works of these majestic locomotives. It only offers 3 services a day and only runs on some weekends and holidays 🗓
The scenic view of the hills and farmlands were great 🐄🐄 The clickety clack of the train on the track (isn't there a song about it 🤔) is so soothing and adds romance to the experience 💕
I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Online bookings are essential, so they can control the numbers during the red light setting. Vaccine passports are checked upon entry, and you're required to wear a mask for the duration of the trip 😷
M.
Definitely definitely recommend it. My daughter loved it. The vintage look, the black smoke coming out while driving it's all very exciting for kids. If u want to spend time in Wailuku I would suggest u take earlier train.
F.
My Family loved this place. pretty sure my son cant wait to go here again. great experience for the family. would highly recommend to everyone
A.
Always enjoy coming back to this great place and collect heaps of memories. Love the staff and their dedication to keep running this show 🌹
T.
A beautifully restored railway station. Must look like it did back in the day.
Would have been better if it was open...my bad
f.
Nice trip to glenbrook
Vintage train tour for family. Great experience. Recomanded
V.
Really appreciate those volunteers who make the experience very genuine and authentic, I feel like I was being transported to another time. Very fascinated by the technology from that time still working today!
A.
What a lovely experience the steam train was. My kids thoroughly enjoyed it especially the stops along the way to explore. Lovely friendly staff. So hot inside the train wearing a mask so prepare yourself for that. Highly recommend the experience.
A.
Took the VIP cart with a high tea, the food was nice and service was good, short but sweet trip know a cool steam engine
J.
Nice day out and all the people involved were friendly and the kids were rather sooty afterwards. Great fun
T.
Absolutely fantastic day out for the family. Highly recommended.
R.
Good fun for little kids. Nothing open in town during covid so not much to do when the train reaches end of the line. Also have to stay on the same train.
Would be better when they get to have markets coinciding with the trains
K.
What a cool place. Not just content on restoring old locomotives and rolling stock, this place goes all out: The station looks amazing, the volunteers are all decked out in period appropriate clothing, the carriages are immaculate, the journey is interesting and the workshops are full of treasures. If you want to feel like you've gone back to how people travelled 70 years ago (except for the fact they take EFTPOS payment) then this is the place to experience it. You get to see how a locomotive can be turned around simply by a good balance and two people pushing. There are good toilets, a gift shop and a place to buy refreshments. Will be back again one day to hopefully do a steam excursion to compliment the diesel one we did.
M.
Such a good experience. Took the whole family and they had a ton of fun. The turntable right at the end was awesome. Thanks to the staff for making this so memorable and enjoyable.
G.
We went on the Waharoa Wanderer. What a great outing. Beautiful carriages and helpful volunteers. The pies were amazing! Wonderful views of the plains with kids in cars waving out at us. Such fun.
M.
The volunteer staff were obviously very dedicated to keeping this alive. It was nice to get the information pamphlet. It would have been nice to have an in person commentary during the trip.
O.
Nice place but can’t enjoy the train as lockdown
A.
Great annual event for the kids run by a charity vendor and volunteers. Decent parking on site. Dress for the night and weather. If you go during the day make time to pop up the road 5 mins to also check out the miniature railway club.
S.
Amazing experience we had with the staff and the trains on an otherwise meek, rainy day.
The staff here are always interested in teaching you about vintage railway along with how life was back in the golden days. Prices at the dairy are so cheap, definitely good for buying icecreams for the kids after going on the train.
I really hope that they can eventually have enough money to be able to extend the tracks further through Waiuku as planned!
R.
Great for the dads. Or kids I guess..
C.
Good family fun, where one can experience the Vintage train along with the satisfaction that in someway you are contributing in maintaining the heritage. Kudos to team there👏💞
j.
We were very impressed with this wonderful attraction. We travelled down from Auckland city which took nearly an hour but was well worth it and the drive out to Glenbrook was beautiful scenic countryside. The Glenbrook Vintage Railway Station and surrounding buildings have been lovingly maintained and kept in keeping with the period of steam trains. The steam train was @ the station ready to go and looked magnificent. All staff and engineers were dressed in uniform including the lovely friendly cafe ladies with their white aprons. Conductors ready to assist and you were allowed to inspect the engine up close and ask questions directly with the engineers (train drivers). Loads of photo opportunities. We booked our tickets online but you were able to purchase tickets on the day and there was plenty of spare seats the day we went. There is a dining car if you want the experience of having a high tea on board which is a little more expensive. We had the choice of open carridges or closed in. The train left on time. The trip took about 30 minutes through beautiful farms and countryside. Tooting as you went was a thrill. Past railway crossings, under bridges, and stopping for 20 minutes at Waiuku when you were allowed off to watch as the engine was uncoupled and tracks were altered for the engine to change ends. It was so interesting. On the way back to Glenbrook we stopped at the engineering workshop where we could see where old engines were being lovingly restored. On return to Glenbrook we had our own picnic lunch in the picnic/playground. Watched as the train loaded more passengers and pulled out for another excursion. While the train was out of the station you were able to go for a ride on a jigger only $1 each. We didn't do this but it looked like great fun. Comfortable clothes and walking shoes would be helpful if you wanted to try this out. The whole outing was well worthwhile and highly recommended. Well priced and good value for money. Twice a year they have a visit from Thomas the Tank Engine. A must fir Thomas fans. Check this out online for dates.
B.
Great outing for the whole family. It appears that there can be very long queues for the steam train after about 10:30am. If you want the steam experience, it is best to arrive for the first train. Alternatively, take the diesel train - it usually has lots of empty seats. Even if doing the diesel train ride, the ticket allows a short ride on Thomas anyway.
P.
The running the show are quite gentle and helpful with people with disabilities. The shop there has a limited range of food, but of good quality.
N.
Good time with family and a train ride was super fun though the time on the train was too short plus I think they should have another stop where people can get off and have some other activities or food and then return. Anyways it was a good time spent.
P.
Had a great night out at the Glenbrook vintage railway's Christmas lights train ride! They did an excellent job with the lights and the running of the trains.
S.
Vintage railways and train station. Definitely try the return trip on scenic route $20 for adults, $10 for child under 14 years old, free for kids under 2 (by April 2019). The scenic route not that amazing but the whole vintage atmosphere with steam locomotive really interesting. They have fancy car where you can get simple high tea with snacks during trip for around $40 i think.
S.
Good for kids learning,
Nice family out spot.
G.
Great old school experience with fantastic weather makes for a great outing a pity the steam loco was being TLC'd but the '52 diesel did great. 4 stars because of the absent steam loco.
J.
An awesome experience live history and engineering in the age of steam power. historical steam trains that are fully operational the Christmas night rides are amazing 👏
C.
Been going since I was a child. Always a great day out, you can see the work that had gone into the place by the dedicated volunteers and the restoration projects. Each year it's a little better. The Thomas the tank engine day is a great outing for the kids. Fun for the whole family, it does get busy but the line moves quick with two trains operating for the event moving passengers back and fourth.
D.
A wonderful ride on a steam train, the Christmas lights and on site santa were great for the family. Quite a unique opportunity in this day and age. Well managed, event.
k.
Highly recommend 👌we all enjoyed it
The staff are friendly and engaging.
Was a lovely way to spend the morning.
S.
What a great idea having Christmas lights on the trains in the evening, adds to the fun of the train ride. Such good work by all these rail enthusiasts
M.
So good! Thomas day out was awesome. The vintage trains and carriages are just lovely. What a fantastic place.
P.
The train ride is good but lacks things for the kids to do at both ends of the ride.
L.
2nd time visiting, still as much fun as 1st time. Great family outing with friendly volunteers.
E.
Just the best, had an enjoyable time lovely place for picnic lunch
G.
Magical experience!
Blast from the past.
Sadly a day without the steam engine in action😥
K.
I've been here multiple times: including 3 Thomas and the Tank Engine trips, one Christmas Party, one wedding plus 5 ad hoc trips. This is a place to enjoy some old school steam engine fun. It's a total blast from the past and a paradise for steam punks. The staff onboard or at the platform/ticketing office are elderly citizens. They are friendly and helpful. Not sure if they are volunteers. It's a unique experience travel to the past. We go there to support them to preserve all these beautiful locomotives and carriages for us and the generations to come. There is one stop en route to Waiuku where you can pay a short visit. This is the workshop. I felt so sad to see those deserted machines and engines in a rusty status.
J.
A nice steam train experience. Good for kids and family who loves trains.
C.
If you have someone in the family who is just totally obsessed with steam trains then i cannot think of a better place than Glenbrook. The trains are very well maintained and the vintage carriages are breath taking. For only $20 an adult and $10 for kids 2+ years or $40pp for the first class treatment (offers first class carriage with cookies, cakes, scones, teas, coffees, juices and more) you will enjoy the beauty of the country side on a little piece of history.
Well worth the visit.
L.
Was very busy considering the location and weather. A few pushy parents and long queues. Would be a good day for 4 plus kids. Younger and toddlers may be scared by the experience of trains and whistles etc.
R.
Smaller than u realize
G.
A great day out for my toddler, me and my partner! Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends were fabulous 😁
T.
Glenbrook has been amazing every time I have been there. Friendly staff who will initiate in conversation about the trains if free, nice open air carriage if you want the 'full' experience, also indoor seating and a premium buffet car if you prefer that. If the staff is not training and if they are free you can ask for a cab ride and more than likely they will say yes. Nice photo locations to go train spotting too. Right now they only have one operational steam locomotive which is quite big but their biggest is expected to come back into service next year along with another decent sized locomotive some time later.
Ride takes 20 minutes each way and there is a 5 minute break to get off at Victoria Avenue (Waiuku) while the locomotive switches around. On the ride back the train stops at the Pukeoware Workshops to fill up on water for 10 minutes. You can take a look around at all their locomotives and rolling stock inside of the sheds. There is some interesting stuff in there.
Thomas days are held sometimes, if you have kids, 3-7, this is probably ideal for you, dates are found on their website.
From central Auckland the GVR is about a 50 minutes drive.
Look and plan on their website before you go. Usually they are running on all Sundays but check to make sure before you go. You don't want to turn up there and find an abandoned station with no trains there, and then post a bad review because 'they didn't tell me they were closed.'
Overall Glenbrook is great if you are a train enthusiast and still good if you just want to 're-live the olden days', or take your family for a nice relaxing fun day out.
Thanks GVR for always being exceptional in service and quality of everything.
S.
Christmas lights - Trains. At Night.
It was fantastic!!!.
Thank you Counties Power & Glenbrook Vintage Railway
A.
Wonderful event. Awesome day to spend with your kids and family. Thomas is best :)
N.
Absolutely fantastic experience, so cool to feel like you were traveling on a time machine, taking in the wonderful countryside.
Nice friendly team all dressed the way they would have back in the day.
Take the kids and enjoy a great family day out
I.
A very worth while trip and run by keen volunteers.
D.
Classic vintage railway with alot of heritage, great for locals and tourist and particularly kids. There is also the Glenbrook model railway down the road that is open to view as well its only a short drive and $2 donation. Worth it for the children they'll love it and it is a huge place lots to do and the model railway is very impress
r.
Fabulous steam train ride. Lovely enthusiastic volunteers.
S.
I went to GVR to see if I could assist in some way with a steam engine rebuild.
n.
Great experience with the Christmas trains. Needed more crowd control, lighting and supervision on the bouncy toys as once it was dark it became a health and safety risk. Crazy busy so would do again at an off peak time.
I.
We did a trip to see the lights for Christmas. What an amazing trip it was. Kids loved it and so did we.
The santa is really fun and they did so much to get the festival season going.
Well done and thank you so much. Will definitely see us next year again.
L.
Excellent, parking is good, well worth the experience with the kids they would enjoy it. I20 min train ride to Waiuku. Food available coffee drinks at the station .Friendly staff
I recommend it. Great tourist attraction.
M.
Great experience. Affordable train ride, great for all ages. And very friendly staff. Will definitely visit again during Christmas.
a.
It's great to see enthusiasts keeping these great old machines running.
K.
Visted in the day and also went to the Christmas lights a few weeks later. Very good value, ran by volunteers who really care about it.
B.
Awesome! Splash out on the high tea and enjoy the vintage train from Glenbrook through to Waiuku and back. Great fun, food was awesome and all the staff/volunteers were awesome. We'll be back.
박.
Fantastic antiques and very nice staffs. Especially good for kids..
P.
Great place to experience rail history, with a team of dedicated people making it all happen. We all enjoyed a great family day out.
Thanks GVR team.
M.
So much fun for the hole family 👪
C.
So amazing loved the little market stalls and the kids loved the bouncy castle definitely going again next year
E.
Good fun ride for the family, don't rush, enjoy the stop overs and plan to have a good lunch before heading back. Maintaining as much nostalgia as possible which is a plus.
A.
A great experience! Keeping history alive. The Parlour Carriage is especially nice. Love the outdoor observation deck!
A.
Good experience. However ladies in the cafe seem rattled with the big crowd on the day that we came. Coffee cups should have lids when taken in the train. I was told they ran out of lid for my coffee cup. H&S issue.
C.
Fantastic place! Our family had a great train ride
F.
Vintage awesomeness!
I.
Fantastic day out, especially for older people and younger kids. Get up close and personal with the steam trains and the staff that run the railway. There is a great playground for the kiddies and a small cafe serving high tea, coffee cakes, sandwiches etc... I highly recommend visiting this railway, even for a short 90 minute round trip.
J.
We attended the Counties Power Christmas Lights event and omg, it was amazing! Kids got a photo with santa, had a play on the playground and bouncy castles, checked out the small market and went for a ride on the christmas express steam train. It was incredible and the kids loved the super loud train whistle. Sit in the outdoor carriage if you can! It's a lovely place to visit even without the chrsitmas event on. Very old school and vintage buildings. They also have steam days and Thomas the Tank engine days (both very popular and very busy). Highly recommend!
K.
Great little vintage railway, steam train rides, jigger rides, lovely cafe and gift shop. Highly recommend the high tea on selected weekends
A.
A fun day for the kids. They will finally be able to understand Tomas the tank engine afterwards, and may or may not transition them into a train obsession you won't see the other end of for years...
A.
This is not my first visit here but every time I'm experiencing this whole setting from a new side. Today was a night ride with Christmas theme which wasn't just amazing but more like a breathtaking. Amount of work put into decoration of the train and carriages, station and it's surroundings brings you into nearly complete fairytale. There should also a separate gratitude given to Santa and elfs. They are there to take pictures with you 🙃
M.
Went here as was the new venue for the Pukekohe Swap Meet. The venue was okay (would like to come back to ride the trains one day) but the swap meet itself was not good .. so 5 stars for the historic location but only 2 stars for the actual swap meet.
S.
Disappointed.... In spite of advertising Steam Engine when we got there it was an electric one. Should not be promoting steam when it wasn't. Needs more life around the place. Its great that this is being preserved but it was quite lack lustre on the day we went.
J.
Great place, but the website isn't clear that it's not open from July to September. October to June it is open.
S.
We had the high tea option. Food could have been better. We were the last trip of day maybe it is better earlier. Was a nice way to spend the afternoon with friends.😀
W.
What a great visit. Paid a bit extra for the First Class Palour ticket which included a high tea and tea/coffee. You can pay extra for beer and wine if you want. The volunteers have done a great job and very friendly and knowledgeable. They will soon be putting on a dining car. Can't wait
S.
We went to the Christmas Lights display at night it was really good, the buildings were all lit up as was the train and carriages
There was a Santa grotto, grandkids had a great time
B.
GVR is a great experience, they've done amazing work restoring locomotives and building track to allow their operation. It has been amazing to watch the progression over the last 20 years that I've been visiting. That said, it's a volunteer organization and they need the support of visitors and donations to keep running. I definitely encourage all to give it ago. It's not the slickest well oiled tourist operation in NZ but the wonder if steam makes up for it many times over.
A.
A most enjoyable day out. Lots of extras provided for the Thomas weekend - bouncy castle, toy trains, face painting, balloons, food carts. But the trains were awesome. Well worth another visit to the train restoration workshop on less crowded days.
L.
Enjoyed the ride in the Parlor Car. Staff were helpful and efficient.
D.
Wonderful steam train experience
A.
Been there few times and it's a great experience. Especially the Christmas Night train rides with lots of lights if you have kids
G.
A Day out with Thomas
We enjoyed our day with Thomas. The staff and volunteers were all dressed in period uniforms which added to the atmosphere. The ride on the Thomas train was only back and forth several times on a short stretch of the track, about 100 meters or so. It was a little disappointing that it wasn’t longer, but it was still enjoyable. There was plenty of food sellers available. Licensed Thomas the Tank Engine products were also available. We took the steam train to Fernleigh and back. The entire journey took about an hour which included a 10 min stop at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway workshop which provided photo opportunities of the train and its engine.
C.
Lovely ,well looked after vintage railway. Well worth a trip and train ride.
A.
Brilliant heritage place to visit
N.
This is pretty expensive for a family pass. And that a family of five and you're looking at over 200$ for less than an hour on a train. There are a few other rides, they also cost $5 per person like Bertie the bus, and Thomas with two carriages, that moves about 50m up and down the track. Cool if you happen to be in Waiuku, maybe not worth a specific day out trip from outside Auckland though.
S.
Good way to spend a sunny 3 hour day with kids aged between 4 - 8.
Very casually organised. Loads of parking. Decent food options. Train ride is above average.
J.
Great place to take the family, learn about the old steam trains, how they are different from diesels. All in all a great family day out especially when they have their live weekends or Thomas weekends
J.
Super cute. Volunteers are amazing. Really enjoyed our visit and train ride.
J.
Great event - need more good wholesome fun places like this.
Y.
Thomas the tank engine day with the grandchildren. Fantastic. 2 y.o. grandchild loves every bit of it and chatters away about face paining and going to see Thomas for weeks afterwards One improvement please... this is a childrens event but the coffee cart does not do fluffies even when there are 5 adult coffees being bought. Please switch to a child friendly coffee cart!
b.
good place for family fun and specially kids are lot of enjoy train ride. very good lighting in Christmas....
G.
Good fun for all ages
S.
Christmas night train . Great for the kids
l.
Waiting for an hour for a 20 min train ride would be better if there was more shelter from The rain and some seating or entertainment would have really helped the bordom. Looked great in the dark with all the Christmas lights
N.
Ride a working vintage stream train. On the Thomas special days it's very busy. There aren't many onsite food options, so bring a picnic and be prepared to queue for everything else. The stream train ride is nice, but the Thomas fans are herded like cattle into standing carriages and go 100 meters forward and back for 10 minutes.
P.
A great little family outing. One negative is they have a Refreshments cafe selling the usual cakes and sandwiches. . .which sells only instant coffee.
j.
Greet decorations on trains and station very busy but volunteer staff did we'll worth going to visit 5 stars
K.
It's been a while since our last visit. It was such a great day out stepping back in time to how life was. So much hard work and effort has been put in to capture and preserve a special time.
A train ride for us next time around !
Z.
It's a fun place for families to go and ride a Steam Train.
F.
Fabulous family fun
Xmas lights on trains and buildings all lit up a beautiful sight train ride excellent
C.
Nice trip on the steam train, price is reasonable. Not too much to do at destination unfortunately.
S.
We booked the first class carriage with high tea, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
H.
This was way cool! Kids loved it. Food stalls not so great. Very oily and tasteless.
L.
Awesome ride on a beautiful day.
s.
We had so much fun out there. We are thinking of going out there again for a actual train ride
M.
So much fun, great experience riding on a stream train especially in the open carriages, recommend it for a family day out!
C.
Fantastic place would not hesitate to go back again. All except the person at the ticket window. A friendly hello or how do you do never goes astray
A.
Great Fun ..And A Walk Down Memory Lane..
J.
Great place to visit with the family, not overpriced, nice trip to Waiuku on the train with a stop to visit a railway workshop which was interesting. All the staff are volunteers and they were very polite and friendly.
T.
What a beautiful place and a fantastic ride in the old train. Kids loved it
I.
Experience the power of steam with a ride on this line from rural Glenbrook into Waiuku.
The trains consist of carriges from the early 20th century hauled by a 100+ year old locomotive.
There is an on-site refreshment room serving sandwiches and pies as well as hot and cold drinks.
There is plenty of parking around the station area.
D.
It was awesome day
L.
Did the Parlour car experience Worth paying extra for comfort and the best view at the front Very friendly staff and plenty of drinks and scrumptious high tea
V.
Went to see Thomas - kids loved it!
d.
Nice trio for train enthusiasts and tourist. Not too expensive. Refreshments and toilets at ticket office. Best done on dry day
N.
It was great experience and my kids loved it..the train ride is really cool and the open carriage is fun to ride on..there is a small cafe on site and some seating area..there is a park for the kids to play as well..I would recommend calling the station to check if the steam train is running before u visit i.e if you want to ride on it
N.
Awesome experience! Well priced
S.
A good day out trip just out of Auckland. Fun place for kids and train enthusiasts
C.
Excellent place to take kids for a day out. Check their website for details. Recommend the event: Day Out With Thomas
A.
Superb in every way. Thoroughly enjoyed it. First class parlour has lovely snacks and tea/coffee.
M.
What a great event. The night rides are amazing. They have made the place look amazing with all of the Christmas lights
B.
Great place for kids fun. Love the train ride
G.
Thought this was going to be a tourist spot but maybe that's only on certain event days? We randomly dropped by on Saturday afternoon when it was all closed up and nothing was there other than the old, but well kept buildings. Hence my rating as expecting to maybe see some old trains or Thomas outside but nothing around at all. Looks like a classic model set though.
B.
No steam train and only a short trip to Pukeoware a little disappointing
F.
Great Family Fun
J.
Fun and interactive with our 2 year old. The crew is friendly and obviously enjoyed their work there. Well done!

New Years Day my wife and i made our way to the GVR. Fantastic experience! We chose to pay a little more so we could travel in the 1st class Parlour Car trundling behind a stream engine, offering High Tea and some savory food. We loved it.
Rolling through the farm land we sat in great chairs, drinking coffee and fruit juice and enjoying the scenery.
I'd recommend this to anyone as a wonderful half-day adventure.

(Translated) I participated in Day out with Thomas again last week. Compared with the previous days, I added a lot of iron horses to seal certain positions. Anyway, there are no more people than before. This destroys the simple flavor of the scene. However, the children are still happy to see the Thomas train!

上週再參加了 Day out with Thomas,比起以前加了很多鐵馬封住某些位置,反正人又沒有比以前多,這就破壞了現場的純樸風味,不過,小朋友仍是樂見 湯瑪士火車 !

(Translated) I went to this place on the weekend before Christmas. The place is not big. You can buy a ticket and experience the steam train operation in 1910. The train will go back and forth for half an hour. Adults 20 and children 10 are good for the whole family. place.

这个地方,我是圣诞节前的那个周末去的,地方不大,可以买票上车体验1910年蒸汽火车的运行,火车来回一共半个小时,大人20,孩子10,是个全家玩半天的好去处。
