We have been to a couple of other South Is Salmon fishing experience and really want to rate you guys as outstanding. Beautiful environment, great equipment and the cafe was amazing from the friendly, upbeat staff to the speed of the smoke. Thanks for providing wee picnic blankets too though a little more shade about the pond would be much appreciated when your bloke won't give up fishing 🤣🤣

Great place to be just to experience fishing. Not a lot of fishing skills required to fish here. Phone never get picked up Lake is full of fish. Pricing is a little bit too expensive Although smoked salmon was great but sashimi was a disaster A little disappointed with the staff cooking ability. Sashimi left under hot air temperature for too long Fish fillet wasn’t cut very well and left too long outside. Temperature control wasn’t great in sashimi. Suggest to train the staff to enhance their cooking ability

I honestly hands down the best activity and fun when I was in Wanaka. Mark is very friendly and helpful to us, explaining about the fishing. It’s fairly easy to fish as we spend probably only. 15 mins to catch 3 fishes. We haven’t even finish our chips yet. Lol. You can have your fish cooked right away. we had ours sashimi for $20, hot smoke for $10 (best tasting! so good!) and the rest we fillet to bring home(free fillet) fish price is only $28/kg which is very fair price. You just need to hire the rod for $7. It was the best laugh we had cause we have absolutely zero skill in fishing 😂 but still managed to fish some. Apart from that, the margherita pizza is amazing too! I can’t recommend enough of this place. Sure be back!

Amazing! caught 2 salmon, took us just over 3 hours but was extremely relaxing and super helpful staff! cooked and served to us within half an hour! if you're going don't do what we did and forget sunscreen as we are extremely burnt. 😅

Great location and friendly staff. Cool idea of being able to fish for a salmon that they then prepare for you to eat or take away. We didn't do this option, but it looked like the people who were, were having a great time! :). The meal was pretty tasty, and their pizza was pretty good too. Hook is worth a visit weather you live here or visiting.

I would rate this higher than 5 if i could. What a fantastic afternoon! We spent an hour, caught 3 salmon and having had the largest of the lot freshly hot smoked after. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful when we’d gone sometime short on luck and hilarious when we laughed at our smallest catch. The hot smoked salmon was amazing, one of the tastiest meals i’ve had - all that much better with their fantastic selection of drinks and the satisfaction of it being my own catch. I recommend to anyone who loves fishing and salmon, will will most definitely be back.

We had an excellent time here! We stopped through for lunch on the way through it Wanaka from Queenstown. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in eating delicious salmon. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. We went with a small group easily caught enough fish to feed the 6 of us. Great selection of local beers available as well!

Amazing experience! Caught 2 salmon within half an hour (ask for some pieces of bait if the pellets aren’t working!) We had one fillet hot smoked to try there and it was so good my wife and nearly I ate the while thing. Also got an order of focaccia which was also delicious. Visited Hook with my wife and four young kids. We left with a great feed of sashimi and hot smoked salmon and smiles on everyone's faces. My son caught his, first rainbow. What an awesome experience at Hook Wanaka. I came on recommendation from someone and it sure didn't disappoint. Although it did take a bit of time and patience to hook a fish, it was worth it. If you don't have much luck for a while, they will come around and check on you to offer you some extra help 😉 🐟 . I was lucky in a way my 4.3 kg Salmon was deemed too mature to eat and was destroyed, otherwise it was going to hurt my pocket a bit as they charge by weight. Food was amazing and the kids had fun too.

If you want to have the thrill of catching a beautiful salmon and eating it in the next 45mins, there's no better place than the Hook Wanaka. Great customer service with a smile and hands down the best salmon I have ever tasted. We also had the woodfire pizza which was nice. I would recommend having a walk around the holder ponds after to see hundreds if not thousands of salmon swimming around. A very cool experience!

What a fantastic place to spend an afternoon. So much for the kids to do. Molly caught this 3.7kg whopper. The staff were fabulous despite being run off their feet. Thank you so much team, we will most certainly be back once we've finished eating this guy!

I advise not to turn up here in holiday season time. Absolutely ridiculous waits. No glasses available for a drink. Paid our $7 for rod hire told a 10minute wait, 30 minutes later still no rod so we left. Have been here before when it wasn't busy and it was fun and enjoyed the salmon throughly. Perhaps limit the amount of guests allowed in and turning people away at the door would be more helpful.

An absolute 10/10. A gorgeous environment, with a truly delightful experience baked right in. The "fishing" is probably better described as "catching", and the results are exceptionally delicious. The lakes are stunningly clear, with a remarkable hydrology story to boot. A simply extraordinary experience for literally all ages.

Great concept! We're visiting the south island for our honeymoon so working some fishing into the itinerary was going to be a challenge. Promises of fresh salmon were just enough to sneak a rod into the suitcase, but after a tough day at the twizel/tekapo canals with nothing to show for it I needed a plan B. This place was perfect! Staff very friendly and good to deal with, I fished the pond at the back with fewer but larger fish and managed a 2.878 kg one in great condition which fought well. Was impressed with how quickly it came back to us hot smoked, especially with the place being so busy with school holidays, and the taste was beautiful! Highly recommended as an anglers plan B. Haha!

Great place first time doing a salmon farm fish saw alot didnt catch anything 🤣 would have been better if i didnt need to swap out my rod 4 times as they had rods without hooks hanging for people to grab and tangles in the reel. It may be others from the public leaving rods without telling otganisers just annoying having to go bqck and get 4 lots of rods to go for the 1 fish

This is a great place to visit and would recommend. We have just had the afternoon here with family and couldn’t fault out experience. The staff were fantastic. Did a walk through but it was gorgeous, looks like you are walking into a golf course. Very stylish Cafe, bean bags , fishing for your own fish from the pond. Just remember you pay per kilo the fish you catch, but that's all clearly signed. Well worth the visit.

What a great place to catch and eat a salmon. We took our 12 and 9 year old grandsons to try their hand at fishing - and even though it was later in the afternoon and very cold everyone enjoyed the experience. We chose to smoke our catch and it was served on a large platter with 4 adults devouring every last morsel - delicious!!! The boys chose a pizza instead- more for us!

3.5. The idea is really cool. Catch your own salmon and have it served up one of three ways. The service was friendly and in a sunny day it's a beautiful spot. We went on a day where the fish weren't biting (too hot) so got a platter and some pizzas. The pizzas seem to be cooked one by one so if you get a few they just come out to the table when ready. For cactching the fish, you are stuck with the size you catch so can be too much or too little depending on how many people you are. But they can prep takeaway for any extra. 15% surcharge on public holidays.

Little bit of a wait(~20min), but the weather was awesome so expected. Was hoping for all the kids to catch one each but after a 3.9kg stonker for the second one we called it a day. The fishing reel they hired to us was semi-functional, so I had to help get it in. If you're just after fish, buy it from the shop it will cost about the same. However if you want a fun day that will leave the kids smiling come to Hook Wanaka. Enjoyed a few pints while waiting for it our fish to be prepared (~50min wait)

So much fun! We had an afternoon to spare in Wanaka and decided to do this activity. We had hooked our first fish within 10 minutes - the second was a bit more of a wait, but a gorgeous lake setting made for a relaxing time. The staff were super helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed eating one of our catch at the eatery, and took the other with us (hot smoked). Delicious! Highly recommended this place for all the fish lover and family. Went there yesterday and it was amazing!!! First thing to mention is their view, it's superb👍👍👍The environment there are good with lots of relaxing stuffs and you can just lay on the clean grasses enjoying the sun spending good time with your family or your love one. The lake there are clean and beautiful too. I can guarantee there are lots of salmon inside the lake as we can see them axactly jumping out the water and they are all very strong when get hooked. It's a place for sport fishing as the fish will really give you a great fight when get hooked. The salmon will jump out the water when get hooked and they will drag your line strongly. Manage to catch 3 good size salmons 2.4,2.6,2.8kg. 🐟🐟🐟More to mentions is their staffs, they are very friendly and helpful. You can ask for their advise for how to catch the fish effectively and they will teach the people to fish patiently. I can see they always come and teach some people there as they don't have a good fishing skills. We took 2 of our catches to cook there. 1 for smoke and 1 for sashimi. Its yummy 😋😋😋

Could not recommend highly enough we had a fun morning learning to cast and retrieve our fishing line and John our instructor was super patient and knowledgeable with a great knowledge of both fishing and the fish themselves. We can caught a beautiful fresh salmon and then had an awesome meal of hot smoked and sashimi salmon. Highly recommend the hot smoked option absolutely delicious! A great day out

I can’t really describe how much I liked the experience and how much I enjoyed it ! It is my favourite experience in the South Island . I highly recommend doing it even if you as far from fishing as Me ! I had Zero knowledge about Fishing but John “hope I spelled the name right” has gone the extra mile and show me how to fish and did a demo. He was very nice and really I could see how passionate he is. They cooked the fish for me later and tested delicious! Nothing better than a smoked salmon 😊 One more thing, I am really sad of the people whom made bad reviews and there are saying “ it’s overpriced” !! Well !! You knew about it right !!! They had the prices all over the place !! In the website in the restaurant in the parking and even they let you know before starting!!!! Please review wisely!!! It is absolutely your freedom to express your opinions but do not put low ratings or low stars because it was “Overpriced” !! Unless you didn’t knew about it !!!! Or there were a hidden fees !! And remember if you want only a fish please go to the supermarket!! Remember you are paying here for the whole experience!! Please go to the supermarket and don’t ruin the place for other people. Amazing place to have a relaxed and fun time. The site is beautiful and it is just gorgeous to hang out. And for the onces fishing.. it's pretty much 100% of a chance to catch nice salmon. Great spot in sunny Wanaka. I went finishing for the first time here and caught my first fish! After catching, you have the option to eat. John turned my salmon into sashimi, but they can also cook it for you. Relaxed atmosphere, lovely staff and great deals on Coronas. Liked it so much that we came back for pizzas the next day (yum). Would be great for a casual meal - even if fishing isn’t your thing.

such an awesome place! enjoy the fishing so much. Me and my brother both did the fishing but mum agree only to pay for one fish. My brother got his one, so it means I end up only to practice fishing with no baits. However, I got a fish too! The owner was so kind as he let us only buy one as planned. The environment just really cool. Plenty of space for picnic around the lake and food at the cafe was excellent. The staffs all very friendly and kind even when I accidently break the fishing rod. Hook wanaka was one of the best activity we did in SI. We tried to hook a salmon in the pond for about 2 hours to no success as it was a hot DAY. Seeing that, Adam the farm owner came to help me.. Give me some really good pointers and help me with some baits and all and we caught a 2.5kg salmon and he even help me spike it. The way they prepare the salmon for consumption was excellent too.. Sashimi and hot smoked. Highly recommended this place to anyone.. Couples and families. Thank you Adam for bringing the magic!

Great concept and excellent experience - juts a few minor tweaks needed First off, the concept is brilliant and the owners have done an excellent job in creating a beautiful area and restaurant. It even has a sandpit for the kids while you enjoy a wine and wait for the Salmon to be prepared. We hired two rods ($5 each) and it took roughly 30 minutes to catch a fish which felt about right. We choose the shallow end of the main pond so the experience would drag out a little for the kids. Unlike some other posters we felt the Hook team were very transparent on pricing. They displayed the average fish weight and the market price per KG so there were no surprises. One area that can catch you out is getting a table inside the main restaurant. Its a pretty small space and catching the fish is really only half of the experience. If we were to go back we would reserve a table in advance but as first timers this really caught us out! If we are nitpicking, it would be nice to have a couple more options for preparing the caught salmon. Yes, there are options on the main menu but the 'appeal' of Hook is in eating the salmon you personally catch! That said the food was excellent so no complaints there. Another minor thing was the staff seemed a little inexperience when it came to food service and the bar was incredibly slow to take drink orders. This place is great, just make a reservation first or be prepared to sit in an uncovered table - great in summer I would imagine. Looking forward to seeing this business develop over the next few years!

Kia Ora, I was first introduced to Hook by a friend in Auckland in early 2020 and hence, put it on my bucket list of must visit places. Since then, I have been to Hook several times and have always had a pleasant experience. Having two young children who are both addicted to fishing, we decided to travel to Wanaka from Auckland for the school holidays where we would surprise them with a visit to Hook for the experience of fishing. We visited Hook Wanaka on the 14th of July and the children had a blast and caught three salmon which we asked to be hot smoked. Our youngest one loved the experience, but did not like to eat the fish as he did not like the dressing, but the rest of us all loved it. As today was our last day in Wanaka, we decided to pay Hook one more visit until our next trip. Once we arrived, a young man in his teens with a cap on advised us bluntly that we will need to wait for about thirty minutes as all the rods were out and there was a waiting list. As we had been to Hook several times before, we understood and advised the young man that there was no problem and got our names put down on the waiting list. A while later the buzzer went off and we went to get our gear . As we did not have several hours to spare, I asked the young man if there were any salmon scraps that we could use for bait instead of the pellets. He immediately responded "no there is not at the moment". We went to try our luck to no avail and I came back to check and found another young man at the reception who was extremely pleasant and when asked about salmon scraps for bait, he advised "sure do. I will go and get some for you". He returned within a minute and after about twenty minutes, we had caught four salmon which we took for hot smoking. The young man who had given us the salmon bait also took our order and I asked for one of the fish not have any dressing on it so our youngest one could eat it. After waiting for our order and upon the going of the buzzer, I saw our two fish that had been prepared and asked the very nice lady about our salmon that was not going to have any dressing on it so as to find out when it was going to be ready. We had bare started our conversation when the young man with the cap who was now in the kitchen turned around out of the blue and while interrupting our conversation, and again in a very blunt and condescending tone said "all the fish has been prepared according to your order" and turned around. I looked at him while he had turned his back and said "it is ok mate" . Well, the truth of the matter was that the fish had not been prepared according to our order. Although, there was no dill on one of the fish, there was still the dressing . The order was for one fish to be plain smoked without anything on it. For us as a family, the experience itself was worth it and seeing the kids' excitement while catching their fish was priceless. Having been in the hospitality and customer service field for the past twenty years in different roles including managerial three managerial roles, I am well acquainted with how vital good customer service is to a business. I understand that Hook is a family run business and I do not expect flawless customer service by any stretch of the imagination, but basic common courtesy is something that I should be able to expect. I was never going to write this review, but feel that it is necessary for this feedback to be provided. My four star rating is reflective of the excellent customer service that we received from the young man who provided us the salmon bait and the lady who prepared our fish.

Great experience fishing for your catch to be smoked and eaten or vacume packed for take away. Great atmosphere with idyllic views. Fishing equipment needs to be updated though. Two fishing reel handles fell off while reeling with no load. The third reel after examination had cracks around it ready to give in... First time this has ever happened while fishing.

We had an absolute blast catching our fish. They were very small though at just over 600 grams and one just under a kg. We stopped in the bar for a beer and fries and eagerly took our salmon home as sashimi. There is where the review takes a turn as we were very disappointed with the taste of the salmon. It tasted weird, hard to explain it kind of tasted grassey. It was not nice at all. Most of us couldn't finish it.... Looking at other reviews it seems like this is not normal though?

This place is such an awesome little spot tucked away off the main highway between Wanaka and Hawea. Woodfired Pizzas, big beer and wine selection, and while you wait for your pizza rent a rod, and catch a salmon! Whatever you catch, the restaurant will prepare your fish anyway you'd like. You can eat it fresh there, or have it filleted and vacuum packed to take with you later.

If you don't catch one, they'll help you out by testing different bait or creating a feeding frenzy at your bait. Had my salmon hot-smoked as suggested by the waitress, was definitely not disappointed! Picture shows a 1,9 kg salmon, filleted and hot-smoked (asked it without dill, not a fan of that, was no problem at all). Get some chips on the side, they're good stuff.

What a great idea fishing for your own meal. We struggled for a start but with a bit of help from staff and a bit of extra fish food my wife hooked a 3.5 kg salmon. Time was an issue when ordering your food( not only us but the table next to us as well) Your salmon is filleted and cooked in one kitchen and your side dishes cooked in another kitchen. We got our sides about 15 minutes before our salmon arrived and by that time the sides were either eaten or cold. Great fun and lovely salmon but be prepared to pay for what you catch.

The fish bait they gave us initially wasn’t very interesting to the fish but towards the end of the day one of the staff gave us a different bait that was much more successful! The staff member helped me work out the technique of fishing which helped a lot. Highly recommend ordering you fish made as sashimi. The hot smoked was also very tasty! (We got half half). When driving back from Lake Wanaka to Queenstown we saw a sign for Hook. Not knowing what it was, my family and I drove to it. I can tell you honestly that this dinner experience was the highlight of our two week trip to Australia and New Zealand. At Hook, we fished for over an hour with the help of their incredible nice staff. We were struggling at first but the owners came over and guided us. We were hysterically laughing by the end. After catching two fish we chose to have one cooked and one made into sashimi. While we were waiting for our salmon we had many appetizers and drinks. We sat outside and watched others fish and even saw a rainbow! I have already recommend this place to people and I will continue to do so. I cannot recommend it enough!!

My son went there with grandpa and my husband, he was so excited about fishing and got 2 trouts by himself, and the catch then freshly prepared as sashimi and hot smoked trout on plates. There are many options, you can take a fishing course, pay your catch like we did, or just fees the fish and enjoy the day. The chef is superb, like 5 star superb! Other staffs were kind and helpfull too. If you love fishing, or sashimi, or trouts and salmon or all, you really should try this place.

A spontaneous stop but one of the best things we have done. Spent a couple of hours casting and then got help from John - who was amazing. The kids each caught a salmon and the staff have filleted it and vacuum sealed it for us. Hook Wanaka is a lot of fun! $5 gets you a rod and bait and salmon food and the lake is right in front of you. For an additional fee you can get a guided fishing lesson and a chance to fish in the pond with bigger fish. The size of the fish you can catch varies - we caught some little 1.5kg and a bigger 2.5kg fish although they go bigger in the general pond. You pay for what you catch $28/kg. Gutting and fileting are free and hot/smoking is for a fee. The restaurant food is delicious and very reasonably priced. We had the Foccacino - foccacia with cold smoked salmon and salads - $21 and yummy. Everyone was helpful and it really was fun (expensive if you decide to catch a load of salmon) but still cheaper and more exciting than getting your salmon from a supermarket. Great experience!

It costs only NZD5 to rent one rod and some bait to try fishing. You pay for any fish you catch. We actually went twice, didn't catch any on the first time so came back the next day and tried again. Ended up catching three fish with the assistance of the very friendly and helpful staff, John, who taught us what to do and even let us use different types of lures. Three fish was way too much for the three of us to eat, though, so consider only catching only one if you are a small group, or trying to fish and then ordering food from their kitchen. The hot smoked salmon was our favourite way to cook it (even better than sashimi). You can also get it filleted and vacuum packed or cooked for takeaway. Total cost for about 3.5kg of salmon + cooking + takeaway was about NZD286 (don't remember the exact cost but the salmon prices are by market rate per kilo). Overall it was decent for the experience, but it was really way too much salmon that we could not finish it.
