Reviews of Warkworth & Districts Museum

This is a great local museum with lots to see, explore and read. The history is great, even though it isn't a large museum, it is really well set out and really tells of the local history both of the Maori, then the white settlers as well as the local commitment during the wars, along with content about the American second world war local contributions. There of course as important is the park in the same local which has a very large collection of Kauri trees with some huge ones 600 and over eight hundred years old. Luckily the really old ones have become access free to protect them with great fencing and observation platforms, plus the boardwalks are keeping people of the ground, thereby protecting the Kauri's roots plus the many other native trees and fauna. This is a fantastic untouched bush reserve. All in all this is a great local facility and is extremely well looked after and cared for by mainly volunteers.

Outside is a very impressive big Kauri called The McKinney Kauri- 800 years old. Height to first limb 11.89m, Center girth 7.62. Another large one can be seen close by.
There is a boardwalk trail through the Kauri forest that starts next to it. It is a beautiful, tranquil walk with Kauri trees, tree ferns and bird calls, made that much better by us being the only ones there.
Admission to the museum is $7 for adults. It has an eclectic collection concerning forestry, mining, minerals, women’s accomplishments, some Maori artifacts and history, European settlers history, stories and artifacts, old cameras, etc.
There is a video of local history that is interesting and worth taking the time to view.
Upstairs there are displays of old shops and a school.
Outside there is a 1900 outhouse, a tiny 1867 post office, Warkworth’s 1912 jail, two US military WWII era huts- all of which can be entered.

The Warkworth Museum is open seven days from 10am-4pm during Summer & 10am-3pm during the Winter months. Volunteers devote their time to this quaint & informative Museum. Entry is $7 per person or $15 for 2 Adults & 2 children. Larger groups can contact the Museum directly to Book a visit & explore the surroundings. Great place to bring a Picnic! Some drinks & ice cream available inside. Parry Kauri Park is free. People are required to follow instructions, in relation to 'Dieback Kauri' precautions. Please read the Regulations carefully & abide. Most of all, enjoy the majestic surroundings!

Lovely little spot, the museum is small but has lots of neat well displayed things. Nice little bush walk that takes about 15 minutes. We spent about an hour there in total, light refreshments sold in the shop.
K.
Beautiful old museum, highly recommend to visit, clean public toilets.
J.
Great collection of local and some national history in a peaceful setting
G.
This is my most regional favourite museum in NZ. It is beautifully understated and unpretentious. The items are fascinating and there is a wonderful balance between the history and the displays. My favourites are the carved wooden chain and, best of all, the linoleum carpet. An absolute treasure.

S.
Lots of wonderful artifacts. Very interesting. Enjoyed the hiking around the grounds and seeing the amazing kauri trees.
G.
Would be so much better if the tree identification/description boards were more detailed, and if there were more of them with more info on more species. We went to a thermal park in Rotorua and the tree info there was better than here.
R.
Had a wonderful time being shown around behind the scenes. Well worth the extra cost. Some marvellous tapestries made by girls as young as 10.
K.

(Translated) Beautiful place! The Museum itself is quite simple. But the little walk through the forest, in contact with native trees and plants is priceless. And the level of awareness when we come across kind of cares wash the sole of the shoes to avoid contamination, since the Kauri, main species of NZ is at risk. It is possible to see two kauris in particular, a computer. 600 and another 800 years old. Wonderful. Lessons of respect for nature and a little history of colonization and exploration.

Lugar lindo!

(Translated) The forest trail is cool and not exposed to the sun. It takes about 40 minutes to go around two circles. The forest air is fresh and the trees are towering and spectacular. It is worth a visit.
