Stunning exhibit! Loved the book that they (the Museum) created to go with the Hima af Klint exhibit! Staff were very friendly!

Dropped in to see the Hilma af Klint exhibition. Very impressive. I find it hard to believe she was pioneering this style just over 100 years ago - an artist well before her time. Definitely worth a viewing.

The Hilma Klint show is a must see, it's crazy to think art work like this was being produced in the early 1900's, it's challenging, progressive,large,abstract, spiritual,surreal and ahead of it's time. Don't miss it !

I really love the style of the building as well as the interior design: Art Deco and simplicity combined to show the contrast.

Really enjoyed the Hilma Af Klint exhibition this morning - an amazing artist, truly inspired & gifted.

The exhibitions are beautifully curated. The staff are courteous and helpful. A "must" when visiting Wellington.

We visited to view the Hilma af Klint exhibition. Well laid out, good lighting, serene atmosphere. a few handy seats for a rest. Shop has a small but tidy range of stock.

Did not enjoy the Hilma af Klint exhibition. Her technique was good, but the subject-matter was a bit obscure, even with the translation on the brochure. Not my cup of tea. The gallery itself has some lovely spaces to exhibit works.

Great coffee with healthy wholesome eats! Had Oatery's owner Anna's take of sugar and gluten free banana 🍰. Simply divine and healthy.

The outdoor installations were the best part, the main exhibition wasn't appropriate for my 11 year old which the man at the front desk advised so we didn't see it.

I saw an amazing performance here with the nose flute and other interesting instruments, bones, greenstone all used to make beautiful and haunting sounds plus haunting singing in te reo. Fabulous!

Look great from outside, will visit inside next time

A wonderful Hilma Af Klint exhibition. Booked a tour which I would thoroughly recommend for this exhibition. Showing until March 2022.

I try to take in with my eyes as well as much as can be physically possible, every time I leave my art studio, im literally trying to see everything, and why not? I've got warehouses, and factories of room with which to store more knowledge, I can never stop learning thank you 😊 ⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐

Really enjoyed to Af Klint exhibition. The Beck/ Pick exhibition was excellent.

Thoroughly enjoyed the thought-provoking contemporary works and installations. Be sure to revisit as the exhibits change regularly. There is a theatre for film screenings as well.

Experience depends solely on what exhibitions are being shown. Still one of the best things to do in Welly, plus it's free! ...there's a creepy, hand dude on the roof now.

If you're a fan of contemporary art, then you'll be at home in this gallery. Though seems like a big building, it seems small when you're navigating it. Free entrance, and staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

Free entry! Hard to go past that on a rainy day. The building itself is lovely and the staff are nice, but the exhibitions didn't grab me. I guess I must be a bit of a heathen. The exhibition spaces were great. Expect modern and contemporary art and you won't be disappointed.

I only gave it 4 stars because I didn't like the exhibit currently on display. Otherwise, this gallery is free, has excellent facilities, and a layout that works well for visitors.

It's not you. It's me. I like having a wander in a gallery to see what is going on but I'm not so crazy for art that I am a regular gallery goer. I think that means I have a bit less patience than some people and the art needs to grab my attention quickly. Mostly the stuff I've seen here hasn't done that. It could also be that they often have fairly edgy stuff and I'm a bit soft - particularly on my old age. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The spaces are great and the building is beautiful. This could easily be your cup if tea - and if you don't go you won't know. But I prefer, Te Papa, Pataka, The Dowse and Expressions. More misses than hits here.

This art gallery has wonderful free shows but at the moment because of covid unfortunately none

When I went there, there was an expo about the group of artists (mainly musicians) "from scratch". Interesting and interactive, a bit small. Other sections of the museum were changing artists and temporary closed. Staff really friendly and helpful.

We skipped the big special exhibit as it contained potentially disturbing imagery. The rest was okay. Not as much art as I would have liked, lots of empty space. Be nice to see more 'traditional' art along with all the 'modern' stuff. Maybe I'm getting old?

City Gallery Wellington plays a unique role in the New Zealand's cultural landscape. The gallery mounts a changing programme of exhibitions and does not have a collection. City Gallery Wellington re-opened in September 2009 after a year's closure for renovations. Three new gallery spaces were added, including one devoted to the exhibition of Maori and Pacific art, plus a new auditorium. The additions were designed by Wellington architect Stuart Gardyne of Architecture+. In 2018, the gallery’s entrance was remodeled to improve access. City Gallery Wellington is a dynamic cultural presence in the capital city of Aotearoa New Zealand, showcasing contemporary art from New Zealand and around the world. got free guided tour of Klint exhibition very enjoyable

Great exhibition space and the guides are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Worth a wander through. The main exhibit at the time was very video based, and we were warned that there were some intense themes. Based on that, I decided not to watch some of the videos, but there was a lot of other unique art to explore

Wonderful Wellington institution. So happy my rates go towards maintaining it. Wonderful staff.

I honestly expected much more as a city gallery as all i saw are 4 big rooms with one big display on each but yeah it was a windy and wet day maybe its just the weather.

Very nice exhibitions, I was amazed by the Semiconductor: Technological Sublime. All the sounds and images shown blew my mind

Wasn't overly impressed with the work on show when l went, a couple of things grabbed me mind. Nevertheless worth a visit as everybody's tastes/interests are different.

Huge delays in construction. 4.2 rating until redevelopment is complete which who know when that will begin, hope sometime soon.

Terminal exhibition showing now (Jan 2021) - amazing collection of pieces, from multiple video pieces exploring an abandoned airport in Greece, to a video installation parady of airport security, arranged around a departure lounge to gate layout... And more. Resonated a lot... personal memories from way too much time in too many airports ... to the unhappy question of how air travel fits in our lives now and in the future.... An outstanding exhibition.

Super; only bad thing was the weird selfish antivaxers/Destiny Church types cluttering up the front door.

I enjoyed my time in the gallery. It's a beautiful building with lovely open space and the art exhibitions are presented excellent. My only gripe is I don't get art most of the time. A few of the exhibitions just went straight over my head and I question why is this art, but then I was left with the desire to investigate further into others. I thought the auditorium was brilliant, never seen something quite like it in an art gallery but the movie was a bit out there...I still was captivated by it for an hour. All considered I thought it was a well spent evening expanding my narrow minded perceptions of art.

Small gallery with interesting pieces featuring new and historical works always worth a visit.

Lots of multimedia presentations when we went. My rating probably says more about my personal preferences and the exhibits at the time. The space itself is pretty cool, and there's a cafe too. It was fairly dark in portions of the gallery.

Always worth a visit. There are usually multiple exhibitions on. Stop at the front desk first to get helpful information on the current shows, all the gallery staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Real neat, redoing the first floor at the moment, so there's only 1 floor of art work. 1 floor is like 5 (estimate) rooms made up of about 3-4 (estimate) different talented artists. Would recommend

Fun event with Pablo's. They got us all tipsy to bid on fantastic art. They managed to fit so much art in the space provided-blew my mind.

I'm often shocked to hear fellow citizens of Wellington don't visit our Gallery. The exhibits are always of high quality, are thought provoking, informed and engaging staff assist with questions and insight. Beautifully laid out and in a prime location, I recommend this place to both travellers and locals. A great way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Excellent art gallery that's free. A good place to go if your bored or on a rainy day if you like art.

Always a great variety of fantastic exhibitions here. Beautiful spaces (with acoustics the kids love to make use of). Fantastic free resource, with a lovely giftshop and cafe.

We called into this museum largely because unlike practically everything else in this capital city, it was actually open on January 1. No permanent collection, just an eclectic range of relatively short term exhibitions based around the work of either an individual artist or a collective. Each included an enthusiastic staff member to show you around. Several were rather interesting, one or two distinctly meretricious. But full marks for trying- and being open on a day when the city was teaming with visitors, but scarce a restaurant or a shop was open.

I very rarely visit as most of the exhibits I find a little dull, but if you're an arty type then this is a very good gallery. The spaces are nicely large and light, and it's usually not crowded, especially on a weekday.

Went along to see the Iconography of Revolution exhibit which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also thought the staff were super friendly and helpful. The Gallery seemed pretty quiet I thought and perhaps a little tired in terms of the Nikau cafe and shop but overall a pleasant trip.

Very friendly and helpful staff. The gallery itself is bite sized and you can get thought it in a relatively short space of time. The temporary exhibition I just saw, which has just finished, was very inspired.

Went in to see the "This is New Zealand" exhibition and it was an amazing experience!

Had such a great time. The staff are so knowledgeable and friendly it's great to be able to have a normal discussion about art and not feel intimidated. I love the Colonial Sugar exhibition. Can't wait to visit again for other exhibitions.

Always clean, tidy and well presented. Exhibitions are generally of great interest and in many cases quite fun and and inspiring to view. The adjoining Nikau Cafe which serves a wide range of superb food and beverage is an added bonus.

My first visit here I will be going back today to look around.some more good accessible toilets very friendly and helpful staff

Nikau is always reliably delicious. They have recently refreshed their menu I think to include some classic pancakes with banana, maple syrup and bacon. It was exactly what I was craving. Friendly and attentive service and great codfee.

The City art gallery is an awesome place to go if you are interested in art. They have some great exibitions from new Zealand and the world. Definitely a place to go if you are looking for something cool to do inside. Also the area around the gallery is very nice too with the waterfront only a few meters away it is truly a great place to visit

Great gallery. Ive seen some exhibitions free and some paid for - so check with staff at reception. Some nice places to sit and relax inside. Gallery isnt that large but they seem to showcase good local/international artists. Cafe and shop inside. Cloakroom available for large backpacks etc. Id recommend seeing here.

Gallery is nice, the airport exhibition is bizarre. The 9/11 impacts on security was maybe one of the most disturbing things I've seen😅

Contemporary gallery with several exhibitions on simultaneously. Installations, moving image and interactive exhibitions. A good place to get your art fix. Small cafe within gallery as well. Free entry. A must for art lovers.

As always City Gallery has intriguing it even troubling exhibitions but certainly it pays to allow enough time to appreciate it.

Pretty cool. Have a range of different exhibitions on. As having a interest in photography and media I enjoy going here every once and while. Def worth to check it out for local Wellingtonians or for people visiting!

Great spot to kill some time while taking in some conceptual and contemporary art. During the year CGW also features exhibitions from world renowned international artists.

I always call in the City art Gallery when in Wellington. The exhibitions change quite frequently. I don't aways like the exhibition but I usually come away with something, be it amusement, anger, amazement and sometime just thought provoking. But that's what art is suppose to do right?.....rattle your cage!

The City Gallery is housed in a lovely old building. The exhibits on here change often enough to keep you coming back. The one I have just been to was bullet time. The gallery has lots of different areas and rooms

Great shows while we were there, the Bullet Time Show and the Francis Upritchard show were both very well done and super inspiring. This gallery is small but really well curated with a great cafe attached. This place is a must visit for anyone visiting Wellington!

Must visit if you have time at your hands. entry is free and what a delightful way to pass time. Location is just behind the city library .The exhibitions are very thought provoking and profound..

As I came in I was courteously asked if I wanted help or info. There were two events on show and at each there were people available to help (and to guard I guess!), and it was all free. An easy well organized experience.

I love going here and pretending like I know what I'm looking at. Staff are friendly and approachable.

I have ben there before a nice cafe restaurant. A good galley to have a look around in and a intresting shop with lots of things to look at or buy

Fairly small exhebition. My favourits were the "this is new zealand" film and the decorated piano. The free wifi is of course always a pro. Even though you can get creative on the top floor, I wouldn't recommend the gallery to families. 1-2 hour trip, unlikely more. There is a cafe right next to it that you can habe a snack in. An elevator makes it wheelchair friendly.

City Gallery has a great theatre and several exhibition rooms, plus shop / shop-front and is centrally located within the Wellington Civic Square. It is close to the waterfront, Michael Fowler Centre, transport and eateries around Cuba and Victoria Streets. Entrance is free so that is a bonus for visitors checking out the various art exhibitions held during the year. On 7/6/2019 Victoria University and Confucius Institute Wn, held their Wellington regional, mandarin competitions for schools and tertiary students, with awards given to the first 3 winners in each category. These winners get to travel to China on free scholarships to participate in the International Mandarin Competitions held later in the year. Congratulations to all the winners! The organisers did a great job hosting and catering for the event. The participants turned out in record numbers this year and were impressive with their proficient grasp of mandarin. On the catering front Nikau Cafe did an excellent job with their delicious lunch which had a subtle, Asian Fusion twist and afternoon tea cakes. They also provided a wide range of beverages and cold drinks for the many attendees present. The staff was most efficient with service which was delivered with impeccable etiquette. The event was a huge success for everyone present and especially for the deserving winners.

Free gallery buy please drop a donation for them. Lots of interesting displays as well as being located in the very cool downtown Wellington area. The cafe inside is also very good.

First time I had been there as a gallery. Used to go there in the 1950s when it was the Public Library. A lot of memories. Now a good exhibition space.

I actually expected a lot more from an exhibition called "we are new zealand. That's not bad, just a bit poor. The best part is without any doubt the piano. That's absolutley amazing.

Interesting and striking exhibits. They were in the process of changing exhibitions when I visited so there was not very much to see, but admission was free and what was there was beautiful.

Nice space, interesting art but felt there was limited going on with lots of wasted space. The Cao-Fe exhibition was brilliant and the staff friendly and accommodating.

Super nice space for modern art exhibitions. All the temporary exhibits I’ve seen were interesting. And over all, it’s free.

City Gallery really should be the pride of Wellington: a gorgeous little building re-purposes to host 3-4 exhibitions at once. Well-curated on a steady cycle of changeover, the gallery offers full immersive whole-of-gallery shows as often as little single room jaunts through an artist's thought processes. Curatorial tastes also ensure that no part of the gallery's offering are staid or predictable. Cute gift shop, and delicious café in the form of Nikau. Go here intending to be surprised by the works in store, and enjoy being a little prouder of the city for supporting such a great institution.

Interesting art displays if that's what you're in to. There is a colouring in area upstairs, which I thought was entertaining, and should help keep the kids busy.

Beautiful gallery in the old city library, not too much art to absorb which means you can spend a long time settling in – rather than rushing around like other galleries

Great gallery. Last time I visited, Michael Parekowhai's grand piano was on display, which was definitely my favourite part.

Though the exhibit on at the time wasn't for my taste, the building itself and the enthusiastic staff was a delight.

I just went in to look around and I ended up to listen to the piano. It was lovely to have someone there to play the piano for just over an hour, everyone came over to listen and it was so beautiful.

Amazing history of the city and story of the great earthquake that almost doubled the size of the city. Down by the Harbour and other places to see. Food places nearby. Other museums nearby.

As a gallery it works wonderfully. The theatre is a great space for events btw.

Although modern art isn't usually my cup of tea, I appreciated the friendly staff and variety of exhibitions.

Interesting arts available for free. I really enjoyed my time in the City Gallery.

If you are going to a show at the city gallery, take a cushion as the seating is not comfortable.

Sometimes there are odd expositions, but good place to visit

dislike topic about violence. Dont have much explanation on those exhibitions so that hard to understand.
