Reviews of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
F.
Beautiful experience glad we came and had a look this museum is very thought out the people who works there was also very informative and nice very clean and well maintained for a public area all covid protocols are also very well followed even the toilets are clean. love all the exhibition it was an eye opener and just well thought out.
E.
If you like museums, this is a must. Learning the history of the country walking through it's incredible exhibits is a great experience. We saw the giant jellyfish and that was whoah! How is that not an alien!? Incredible!
R.
My second time coming to this museum and I always enjoy myself. The Gallipoli exhibit is a personal favorite and I get emotional everytime. Located at the end of the waterfront and you can walk to it too it's a great time for everyone
N.
A haunting memorial that words and pictures can't describe.
From the moment I heard about this exhibition a few years ago my sole motivation to visit Wellington was this display and it did not disappoint. The level of detail is inspiring, creative and damn skilful.
If you get a chance check this display out, but that is not all that they have. There's a huge area that is just interactive and looks like so much fun for children. But alas, I did not get a chance to view the whole thing, but I was certainly delighted with what I did see.
R.
Very beautiful and big place nice cafe on site clean toilets and nice staff!
Museum visit is free but there is a Mars tour which is not free so you may book it when you reach there and attend the mars session which is live act with digital feel to a Launch like a movie and all visitors are involved in the act.
S.
Must see!!! Amazing exhibitions and couldn't believe that it's free. Really enjoyed getting lost in the museum for almost 3 hours.
J.
Spent the day in Wellington it was wet so decided to spend our time at Te Papa arrive about 10 am and didn't finish till nearly 6 in the evening a great day so much to see did the Mars launch which was a entertaining interactive show very enjoyable
G.
Great experience, Free entry. They have a war related information explained in very detail on level 2. Worth the visit
B.
Just totally impressive, the Gallopoli exhibit is humbling. The whole Te Papa space is so professionally put together it makes you proud to be a New Zealander. Weta workshops well done with your larger than life testament to some heroic men an woman.
T.
What an amazing museum - especially the natural history animal displays and WW1 Gallipoli exhibition. Unfortunately we went at a time (Monday morning) when the exhibition was full of a visiting school, so there was a lot of yelling and talking through the WW1 section. Maybe try go around lunch, in between school visits! The giant squid was also a highlight. Parking cost was reasonable for Wellington, see photo at the end.
M.
A must see if you're visiting Wellington and have never been here before. They have several in depth exhibits throughout, I particularly enjoyed the Nature one as well as the Gallipoli exhibit.
S.
Went to Te Papa just to see the "Gallipoli The Scale of our War" Exhibit. Surprised to discover it was free entry. What an absolutely stunning display. The models are breathtaking and the pictures do not do them justice. Plenty of hands on displays and much more to see / discover than just these. A must see and do. We will remember them.
F.
Thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The layout has chānged a bit, lots of interactive exhibitions
C.
Te Papa is quite a magnificent museum and gives a through insight into New Zealand culture and land. Spend a full day taking in the wonderful exhibits and live performances. Great Cafe on-site too.
B.
Very interesting war museum best for learning about war history and nature . Wellington Museum shares the fascinating stories of the Wellington region. All housed within the beautiful 1892 heritage building designed by leading architect Frederick de Jersey Clere. Enter the nautical world of ships and sailors, explorers and seafarers. Steer ships and haul cargo on board as you enter Jack’s Boathouse. Experience living in a real captain’s cabin and learn more about Pōneke’s best-loved dog, Paddy the Wanderer.
R.
this was a really cool museum with really fun interesting interactive displays. in the war section there were these giant super real figures of real people from ww1. it was a big highlight because for me and probably most others, most of our understanding of ww1 is from black and white photos. however, te papa had super realistic statues and it really showed the fear and sadness of the soldiers and those involved in the war. there was also a nature section and in there had things like a earthquake simulator, realistic figures of birds etc. there was also art displays and lots of other stuff. it was really cool and i would say this is a must go location in wellington
H.
Great place to visit on a rainy day … free of cost some really amazing artwork… 6 levels to see … surrealism arts gave a bit of headache but theres lots to stare at for hours here easily …. Could easily spend a day here !! Cafe n restaurant decent food and service… if h wish yo have lunch!!
S.
One of the best Museums I have ever been too, the War display section was a 10/10. I felt so emotional walking through there, even though I don't know much about the War. I could feel the emotion in the air. HIGHLY recommended.....
P.
Gallipoli exhibition is absolutely astonishing.
Some many details; it does feel alive.
It brings the real spirit of Anzac day.
Don't miss out, must-see attractions.
M.
An amazing museum which has free entry. There are some exhibitions you can pay to enter. They change the exhibitions frequently. There is a cafe and gift shop on the ground floor. Great to see that the museum has become more bilingual over the years and has more information in Maori now.
S.
Fantastic museum, visit every time we are in Wellington. Always something to see with 2 nice cafes when you need a rest. Gallipoli exhibition is amazing, very moving really brings home what it was like.
J.
Really great Museum that will take a few hours to go through quickly. The Gallipoli display (The Scale of our War) was absolutely incredible and I recommend that you go see it.
A.
Always a pleasure to visit - but A+ to the staff during these COVID times. Doing a great job of checking vaccine passes with photo ID and making sure everyone is scanned in with a smile on their face. So friendly!!! I know it’s not an easy job, so kudos to you guys! 😊
M.
Gallipoli exhibition is well worth a visit, great detail and very informative. Allow 45 mins for the exhibition. There is no entry charge for this exhibition.
D.
Excellent displays. Can spend the whole day there. The best attraction in Wellington. Must not miss it.
A.
Loved the Destination Mars experience. They do call on you, so be prepared to actually participate and speak up!
B.
The free Rita Angus exhibition is excellent! I would have happily paid $20 to see such an excellent collection ranging over her lifetime. Picked up a book on the exhibition so wean re-view the pieces at our leisure.
K.
Great place! Still amazed at the exhibitions after years of not visiting Te Papa. If you get an opportunity to see the Gallipoli exhibition before it ends, do it! It is fantastic. Even with COVID restrictions, it is still a great place to visit.
M.
Absolutely loved it! Will definitely come again. Fantastic exhibits and staff were lovely. If your in Wellington it's a must. Best of all it's free!
J.
Such a brilliantly maintained space. The exhibitions are wonderful and regularly change. The staff are amazing. Particular compliments to Bill who was an absolute superstar; knowledgeable, witty, and a great representative for the museum.
A.
Great museum, really well put together. We came here for an event (Destination Mars) and loved it. Cannot recommend this place enough, an excellent example of tax payer money spent right!
F.
Very very good displays. The overkill with vaccine passes and checking ID, considering we are over 25k covid cases daily. I have never had my ID checked before. Why is it needed here. Also, there were security type people at every level, looking at me as if I was going to do something wrong. Always looking over my shoulder. Otherwise very good
S.
You'll visit more than once! Te Papa tells New Zealand's story in a beautiful and accessible way. Very engaging for adults and children alike with plenty of interactive activities that add to your understanding. The Scale of Our War is a must see before it finishes - incredible moving.
S.
If you're in wellington and you have children, this is the place. We visit wellington at least every second month and go every single time!!! I'll never get enough! 10/10 every time. The Cafe however is WELL over priced. Not once have we eaten there! Better off heading into town for food :)
S.
Great place to spend a day when it's raining outside.
K.
Gree museum in the heart of downtown Wellington, gives you full history of Wellington, to include full history of earthquakes, tectonic plates, even has a earthquake simulation.
Very cool day spending time with family and learning.
Easy access, highly recommended by locals.
G.
An Experience Every New Zealander Should Put On Their Bucket List. One Photo/Display Of New Zealand Prior To Human Settlement Really Depicts Mans Destruction Of Nature. Clear Felling 75% Of The Native Bush, Leaving Just 25% Of What Was. I Guess This Is Called Progress??
R.
A wonderful museum, and worth the visit. Lots to see, in a lovely location so can be enjoyed as part of a day of activities for all the family. The Gallipoli exhibition is moving, and informative. Helped feel a connection to our ancestors. Also was very excited to finally see the giant squid 🐙. Good for wheelchairs, push chairs and you could loose yourself for a few days.
D.
Always a pleasure! Great day for families, couples or to wander alone...
Individual exhibitions ..as example currently 'Rita Angus', 'Gallipoli" and "Mars" ....make this venue somewhere to return to again and again ....
I still don't think I have seen it all!
T.
Amazing!
So much has changed since I was last there and that WW1 exhibit is breathtaking I strongly recommend to go during school hours if you can so it is as quite possible so that you can soak it in.
We started around ten o'clock and didn't finish until nearly closing but it was all completely worth it.
H.
Bruce from Te Papa is great!
My girls and I have been in several times with no interaction from the staff (which is also fine) but Bruce was very hands on, explaining exhibits and enthusiastically teaching them throughout his area.
Thank you for making our trip to the museum a really awesome one!
V.
It was great. On a rainy day you can spend the whole day browsing the exibitions. Very child friendly. A lot of the exibitions are interactive and the kids love it. We spent the whole day there and i can honestly say we managed 3 exhibitions. So we will have to go again a couple more times. My daughter loved the nature exibition best. The food at the cafe was surprisingly very good.
A.
I absolutely love this museum.
Not many museums focuses on the NZ history and fauna & flora.
Lots of interaction that would make it very interesting for family with kids.
I always leave the building learning something new.
What I completely forgot is that it is free. They only rely on Koha (donation).
a.
This musem is much cooler than I remember! Has many cool exhibits, all completely free. must have a covid vaccine pass to enter. Cafe is also good and looks onto the water
M.
Wonderful experience. Highly recommended to spend some quality time there
J.
Awesome place! Lots of educational and fun facilities caters children's appetite also teach us something more each time. It's entirely free but I do donate each time as we did benefited
S.
It was a really great experience for me. The place was really amazing. I visited the place 2 days but i still haven't seen the entire museum. Its definitely one of the place everyone in New Zealand should visit. Such a great experience. I am planning to visit again with my husband soon.
L.
Love visiting. Always something new and exciting to see. As well as something new to learn. Visited the Mars exhibition that's currently run was so entertaining and lots of fun by all that were with me.
B.
Highly recommend visiting when in Wellington. Great range of exhibits for people of all ages to see and interact with. Also, 2 excellent café on-site to rest and refuel.
S.
Amazing museum.. will take atleast a day to go through each levels..
R.
Had a great afternoon at Te Papa. Could have spent more time there. Cafe not so great, got the order wrong, came out in bits and pieces, even after pointing out order wrong, took ages to bring the right things, a beer and a salad.
J.
Fantastic exhibitions. You will need plenty of time to explore, or visit over a few days. There is a huge amount to see. Take time out to have a coffee.
L.
Really nice way to spend a morning. The gallipoli exhibit is beyond amazing. The work put into it is astounding. Full of tonnes of information.
The other free exhibits are also well worth it. Being able to see a collosal squid is a big big highlight.
The art exhibitions are also very cool to look at.
Overall a really nice relaxing way to kill some time.
M.
Must do if in Wellington. Great website keeps you up to speed on exhibitions etc. Busy over the holidays and during the weekends but it’s still worth a visit as there is so much to see and do there. I go 3 or 4 times a year and still enjoy it.
J.
Always something of interest going on, as we are from Auckland we don't get many opportunities to visit on a regular basis so to be able to squeeze in two visits was a bonus
Thoroughly enjoyed the Mars program and the visual displays.
Will be back next time.e down.
K.
Enjoyed mi experience at Te Papa, so much to see. Well worth going.
C.
Such an amazing place to visit if you are in Wellington...it's pretty cool and each exhibit is put up with care
K.
The museum of New Zealand situated in Wellington. There are so many to explore here about the history of New Zealand. The photo of me is under "the web of time"
B.
This is the best, most realistic, interactive museum I have ever visited. So detailed and well-kept history that isn't drab, old looking displays. But realistic real-life activities of soldiers during war-time. Great sound effects, commentary, photos and displays. The best effect is the people who were involved in the war giving the historical facts. Then the beautiful, realistic, interactive bird display of extinct and currently found birds, their sound and what they looked like. An awesome display of the Christchurch earthquake. Insects, sea animals, bookstore, cafe and heaps and heaps more that is just too much for one day. I will definitely be back to revist other sections I couldn't absorb properly. A must go-to on anyone's visit to Christchurch. Kapai! Well done!
D.
A trip to Wellington isn't complete without visiting the “Museum of New Zealand Te Papa”. You could easily spend most the day just wandering around it's 6 Levels. The layout was great, exhibits were all well designed and interactive, and the information was easily absorbed. There is something for everybody to see and enjoy. Great day out for the whole family and entry is free.
D.
The Gallipoli exhibit was one of the highlights of my Wellington trip. Super informative, interactive, and I was awestruck with the giant sculptures in this exhibit. They were so realistic that I felt like they were going to move at some point! 😳
The war stories and experiences, told through their eyes, was also a great touch.
Highly recommended! 👍
S.
Lovely place to visit specially while touring Wellington. Arrived before opening hours and were welcomed by lovely staff, an amazing cafe and lots of seating areas too. Can easily spend at least about 3 hours if not more.
K.
A good place to go if you are new to new Zealand
N.
Such cool exhibits! We especially loved the Gallipoli and Destination Mars ones. This place never fails to amuse us every time we visit.
M.
Fantastic, really enjoyed the free exhibits, went twice over two days. Destination Mars was a big let down however. Thought I might learn something about Mars - nope, just a spray of token buzz words. Thought the interaction could be fun - no, the interaction on the personal screens was contrived and didn't affect the outcome. Thought there could be good special effects - no, the tech seemed like something from 15 years ago. The actors put in a good effort but it felt like they were flogging a dead horse.
T.
There is no reason to rate q star less. Such a nice museum. They even have a Tesla coil on the top level. And a electric motorised small model train as well. It seems like the train has got a little bit problem as it won't go all the way through while in the middle there were some crunking sound and it seems like a part of the cogwheel is not working properly. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.
R.
Very nice museum and lots to see. Loved the Gallipoli feature and keen to do the Expedition Mars exhibit. A couple of cafés inside for convenience.
G.
The Gallipoli exhibition is incredible. If you're lucky to be in there without many other people then you can really absorb everything and connect with the stories. Te Taiao Nature space is also great and has a lot to see and do. I do find a lot of the museum hard to connect with, huge spaces, lots of stuff to read, very sparce on actual physical items. I guess this is the modern style, but I prefer more things to look at and study.
M.
Really cool, richly interactive exhibits. Great for all ages. Wish I had more time to see some of the other displays.
M.
This is an amazing museum that you MUST see when you are in Wellington.
It has the largest Maori culture, history, and art museum outside of Auckland.
We went to the museum to specifically see the Gallipoli display that has large scale models and three dimensional displays of the heroes associated with this episode of the war, as well as a thorough and thoughtful history of the conflict and the tragedy of the hundreds that lost their lives there.
The models on display were fabricated by the same group that made all of the models, armor, costumes, etc, for the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings movies. (Weta studios) It is a must see!!
And... it’s free!
J.
I only paid for 1 hour parking so didn't have enough time to get round the whole museum. Probably managed about half of it at a rush but it was so interesting. The war exhibit was awesome and the models were so life like and huge! I would definitely suggest investing a lot more time than I did to get the full experience.
A.
Amazing place and a must visit. Free to visit, and my word, what a fantastic job they have done. The Battle of Gallipoli exhibit hits you hard. Such serenity and beauty in the capturing war times.
G.
A very interesting and detailed exhibition on New Zealand nature and wildlife. The entry is free, so take your time to discover all parts of the museum or come again to see everything. Great design, with lots of interactive options. I love the first floor with the wildlife and the volcanic departments. Bring your kids, since there are a lot of things visualized for children to understand!
C.
Bruce, on the top level, was a total delight.
My friend and I went about an hour before closing so it was pretty quiet, and he came over to tell us about multiple different exhibits. He knows his stuff and is such a delight - sorry. Te Papa is cool but Bruce gets a 5/5 rating from me
J.
Went especially to see the Gallipolli exhibition and Rita Angus. The Gallipolli exhibition is amazing and really gives you food for thought as to what they went through. Rita Angus also very good. Very interesting to read about her life
N.
Love this Museum!
Great exhibits for kids to explore and get hands on with. (maybe clean your hands before eating)
From history to art to Nature. This place has it all.
Cant forget John Britten's Motorcycle The Britten 1000!
We saw the Gallipoli war exhibition. Amazing stories, huge over life size installations were impressive.
Some sad stories to follow.
The Museum is free and quite large. Come for an hour each morning if you're staying nearby to see it all.
M.
Te PaPa Is an a must see for all tourists.
The exhibitions are absolutely amazing and the staff are very accommodating!
I would really recommend to visit Te PaPa.👌
K.
Absolutely fabulous. Due to covid, not big crowds, so, we were able to move round the exhibits slowly and understand them better. The interaction with exhibits was incredible. The Gallipoli exhibit was so life-like, the stories in the background, the noises of war, and the emotional impact was so saddening. Entry was free, and so worth the visit!
E.
Absolutely beautiful food.. friendly service. One thing could have improved experience .... We felt very rushed to leave as soon as we had finished, bar staff asked to clear all our table including water glasses as the dishwasher needed to go on!! It would have been nice to sit for a while to enjoy my friends company without feeling like a nuisance .
L.
The BEST & most IMMERSIVE museum you will ever experience. As someone who has been to the Louvre and has a passion for museum and curatorial finesse, I highly recommend Te Papa and will be coming back to the free exhibits for years to come. This venue inspires Kiwiana pride and a deepened love for Aotearoa♡
A.
Fabulous, wish we had more time
L.
Brilliant history put on display. Interactive features for schools and colleges catering for all ages. Even has an interactive Earthquake Room which really puts things into perspective! A Car park available next door and whilst you're there go for a walk on the front walkway, ridgeway etc for pedestrians, runners etc. This is something not to miss out on. Make sure you have plenty of time though, plenty to see. You can always break it with lunch at the restaurant. Must visit!
R.
I love Te Papa! It's a good place with interesting exhibits. If you get a chance go see Gallipoli, both informative and depressing but still hit the right balance.
W.
The "Gallipoli: The scale of our war" exhibition is extremely good. The kids definitely enjoyed the Colours exhibition. I loved the Polynesian exhibition. A must visit when you come to Wellington.
J.
Definitely the best museum I have ever been in my life. The place is so huge I completed it within 2 days. I took the time to read the description on most of the displays. There are so many exhibitions to choose from. The placements of the arts are on point, giving its full effect. Made my trip to Welly worthwhile.
A.
Still the best museum in the country. Had a new exhibition on Gallipoli which was amazing. The lifelike exhibits were absolutely breathtaking and realistic. You could count the hairs on their feet. Absolutely recommended you witness the splendor and realism of this exhibit. Puts the war in perspective. Extremely moving experience.
C.
One of the most wonderful museums in the world (and we have already been to almost 40 countries).
It’s really spectacular! Everything is perfect: Architecture, collection, location. O top of this, it’s also free.
Do not miss this attraction!
A.
I've been to numerous national museums and Te Papa is one of my favorites, if not the top pick. Educational, entertaining and very informative. Super child friendly with good facilities for parents. A full restaurant downstairs and a small cafe upstairs with some nice rotating exhibits
A.
Visited the museum a month ago and should have written a review then. Can' get over how different this place is compared to the dusty quiet old museums that were around when I was young. A good vibrant feel and the kids love it
j.
We had a nice visit to Te Papa a few weeks ago. We really enjoyed the Rita Angus exhibition and browsing in the museum shop.
M.
The best of the museum that I have been in my life!!!
I spent time from 10 am - 5 pm in this place to know more about New Zealand. There can tell you all of the stories about New Zealand~
E.
Huge and amazing museum. Lots of interactive elements and great variety of content. Our 3 year old had a blast. We also recommend story time/place. A dedicated section for children.
M.
This was definitely worth the trip. Informative and interesting exhibitions. Great for kids which I am not so I dialed in 15y to my grey cells and had a ball. For the cerebral there is a good exhibition of Oceanic and NZ art both ancient and modern on the 4th & 5th floors. If you want great views of the harbour take the lift to 6.
The cafe on the ground floor is good too.
Good in all respects. It's free so don't forget a donation to the boxes at the entrance.
A.
Fantastic as always. Only thing that was annoying were the kids running around screaming and being disrespectful little gits round the Gallipoli experience. Shouldn't be allowed in.
A.
Great to visit on a wet windy Wellington day. Great expedition and up to date. Mars exhibition was fun.
K.
Absolutely blown away by the war exhibition.
Te Papa is amazing
H.
Loved the visit. Hours of free fun for the family
N.
Went to Wellington for a short getaway with my Mum who came to visit me from South Africa! Was absolutely amazing experience and our favorite part was visiting Te Papa Museum! Absolutely beautiful and magnificent. She went home and raves about it continually! Lovely staff so friendly and helpful:) absolutely Do not miss your chance to visit
C.
Not great with regard to planning. We went to visit the Surreal exhibition but could not purchase tickets at the entrance to the exhibit but were sent back to Reception on the ground floor to purchase them by a woman who was sitting there with nothing to do other than send us back to square one. Not impressed so gave the exhibition a miss.
T.
Such a fantastic museum! We loved the Rita Angus exhibition. Te Papa is a Pōneke highlight and I always enjoy my visit.
J.
Superb museum highlighting all NZ's history, culture, flora and fauna. The Gallipoli experience is poignant and shouldn't be missed. Allow a full day to view most of it. We returned for a second day. The cafes are reasonably priced. The second floor cafe is quieter and more comfortable.
Z.
One of the most beautiful museums I've ever visited, providing ample education, culture and fun. The exhibitions are diverse and fascinating (free to Aucklanders, almost $25 for other visitors) and the current special exhibitions are spectacular. It is worth the extra investment to watch the cultural Māori show, that uses music and dancing to explain some basics about ancestor migration and some basic traditions (around $25). Not to be missed experience - but beware, the museum is so large that history lovers will have trouble drinking in the culture and science in just one day.
K.
Amazing museum that is so well cared for and curated. The exhibition are excellent and informative without having too much text to read. There is a good use of technology at each of the exhibits. Best part is the museum is free of charge to enter and has a good variety of exhibits.
M.
Its a good place to start your lesson on Nea Zealand. One gets to learn history, science & arts related to the land. Kids will specially enjoy. If one has 3 days to spend in this city then a visit to this museum should be the part of itinerary.
J.
This is an incredible museum. Free entry and so much to see and do. You could walk around all day and take in so much. The Gallipoli exhibit is breathtaking with so much easy to read information and videos along with voice overs. There are interactive exhibits all over this museum. With some art exhibits to make you think and take the time to sit and enjoy.
R.
Te Papa was an incredible experience. I spent 3 hours there and barely saw 10% of what it has to offer.
I saw the Gallipoli exhibit and it was deeply engaging and emotional. Truly incredible, and really tells a well rounded story from the perspective of many real people involved in the war.
I also visited the nature section which was chock full of fascinating stuff. I found the nest area particularly impactful.
The art section was also incredible, with huge works of art and awesome pasifika exhibitions.
Overall, would highly recommend. I will be going back!
T.
Our first visit to the national museum, didn't have the whole day so had to choose the exhibits wisely. The museum is easy to find and easy to navigate your way around the levels and displays. Gallipoli: The scale of our war was very thought provoking and the 2.4 times real scale sculptures were so very lifelike. We wanted to see the Terracotta Warriors display but the queue was too long so we only had a chance to see the exhibit on public display.
M.
Has to be one of the best museums in the world. Spread over 6 floors and different blocks, the museum gives a glimpse of NZ past present and future. Has a dedicated section for war, Maori culture and other sections glorifying the NZ life.. there is a section for kids too.. the roof top gives a panoramic view of the waterfront.
M.
What an amazing city. very friendly and relaxed people. We were here in 2007. and loved it.
Te Papa Museum is wonderfully centrally located on the harbor of Wellington. Especially in the weekend there is plenty to do in and around the museum, which makes this place a great starting point to explore the city.
The museum is beautiful. The different floors each have their own collection and their own character. It is wonderful to wander around all the beautiful things that New Zealand has to offer. If you have several days in Wellington, I would occasionally walk in once to explore part of Te Papa. Admission is still free.
I'm not getting bored here. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and in addition there is a lot for families to do for the children.
The Museum of New Zealand At Papa Tongarewa is New Zealand's national museum, located in Wellington. Known as Te Papa, or "Our Place", it opened in 1998 after the merging of the National Museum and the National Art Gallery. More than 1.5 million people visit every year.
F.
Lovely museum, lots of exhibits. Couple of the exhibits kept the kids busy for quite a bit. Lots of info regarding a variety of subjects. Would like to return again, maybe without the kids to explore/experience a little more in-depth. But 5/5 for engagement regarding children. The lifts are a bit busy on a busy day, so expect to use the stairs quite a bit.
J.
Enjoyed every bit of our visit. Emotional stories learnt from the Gallipoli exhibition. Rooftop area gives you a great view of the the city. Our half a day visit was not enough to see all the exhibitions. Revisit is a must!
G.
This was a big surprise, I knew it was a very good museum but after visiting I now think it’s one of the best I have ever seen.
There’s modern, abstract, native, classic, natural and more. It’s very well curated, it allows and welcomes interaction.
This museum is perfect for all age groups, you will spend many hours inside and have fun for free.
You can even store your coats, valuables and bags for free at the chek in. The gift shops have cool (somewhat expensive) stuff and the café is very nice.
Also, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, remember to leave a donation if you can, it’s worth every penny!
V.
One of the most amazing museums I’ve ever visited, mostly because of the exhibition on the first floor (the one with Gallipoli). Histories from the First World War, where pictures are blown up to giant statues and you’ll experience their history and how a trench felt like. Strongly recommend this museum over any other museum in Wellington. And a bonus, it is free of cost (temporary exhibitions may come with a cost) but you’re most welcome to donate if you’d like.
S.
We just saw the Galipoli exhibition which was amazing definitely a must see.
W.
Love the place!! Throughout the country's history you can learn easily by visiting this place only.
For making it easier and entertaining, they have put a lot of efforts in there.
This place includes complete history of War, Maori's, Weather etc.
R.
Te Papa Tongarewa has to feature among the greatest museums of the world, owing to the sheer variety of exhibits. The museum has been built on reclaimed land. It can take an entire day to cover all the sections of the museum. A portion of the museum is outdoors and overlooks the Wellington waterfront. My favourite displays in this museum were the colossal squid, Gallipoli - The Scale of our war and Awesome Forces. This is a place that will be enjoyed by both children and adults. There is a viewing terrace at the top from where we can get awesome panoramic views of the harbour. Staff were courteous while explaining the rules inside each pavilion. The Foyer level has a cafe and a store. When in Wellington, Te Papa museum is a must-visit.
J.
Could easily spend a whole day at Te Papa every time I visit Wellington. Heaps of free displays and some limited time paid ones. Love that Te Reo Māori appears first on all the information panels.
A.
All I can say is wow!! The Gallipoli display was so good and very real looking. And many other great sights
A.
Wasn't allowed into the Mars exhibition even though we had time. Not well organised, but fantastic Gallipoli exhibition
C.
This is the best museum I’ve been to so far. There are many interesting themes about New Zealand, from the history of Maori, culture of early settlers, wild life animals and birds, volcanoes to nowadays living styles. You definitely don’t want to miss it!
Q.
Great Free national museum in Wellington!
We visited this museum in the middle of a hot day in Jan. Consider it’s free and full air conditioning, I gave it a 5-stars review! There are plenty of activities and things to see in the museum, I personally love the section of NZ birds, press the bottom you could hear the birds’ sing or nothing if it’s extinct. I really felt sad that about 50% of the birds showing in this section are extinct already! Also there are many other animal, natural, and war display. Highly recommended to others!
b.
Great place to lead you to experience the war in a soldier’s view. Really touch and inspire. Highly recommend to visit.
F.
Beautiful museum. Tour guide was just okay. The exhibits are clean and well maintained. There are many interactive displays and fun activities. We had so much fun walking through the museum and learned lots. I HIGHLY recommend dinner after hours at the museum. An impeccable 3 course meal with great service. It was a wonderful evening.
D.
A must visit if you're in Wellington. If you're short on time:
The Gallipoli exhibit is incredibly touching. Featuring hyperrealistic scale models made by Weta Workshop, interactive exhibits, and commentary from veterans, this exhibit is engaging and very interesting (this is coming from someone with little interest in war history).
Check out the rainbow light room, Total Internal Reflection by Tiffany Singh on one of the top floors.
I.
We only had about an hour and a half to spend here before we caught the ferry. I could have spent an entire day there and not seen everything. If you decide to go, I would allow yourself at least four hours. They have a great Gallipoli exhibit coming up in a few months! Actually I just went to check the exact dates of opening for that exhibit, and it says it's been on since 2015 and runs through April 2019. I don't know if it was closed for some reason when we went, but there were signs saying it wasn't open.
It's definitely worth going and it's FREE!!!
B.
Fantastic museum. The Gallipoli exhibit was impressive as it was moving. Great NZ natural history displays and earthquake experience too. And all for free.
J.
I didn't realize the layout had changed since I last went to Te Papa. It seems less flowy to me where the old layout had you go through the core of the earth display through a sort of timeline of the planet. The new layout is less guiding and more open plan. At least the colossal squid is still around! Still really cool to see all the history within Te Papa, both of the planet and Aotearoa. An extra star for the Gallipoli exhibit because it's still both stunning and extremely moving.
J.
We love this wonderful place so much! We purchased tickets to the Surrealist high tea and exhibit. The high tea was so delicious and they had no trouble at all catering to my diary allergy. The exhibit was set up so well and the staff are so knowledgable. Thank you so much!
P.
It's ok. It has a modern art section on the top floor and it's quite interactive in general so kids will appreciate it. You can take photos everywhere except in the Maori area. The War rooms are quite impressive, especially the huge realistic solder figures. Those are incredible and the atmosphere is also very well done.
I wouldn't recommend the cafe of the museum though. Desserts are pretty bad.
C.
A great place to spend a few hours or the whole day. Perfect for visitors of all ages. Wonderful tactile and engaging exhibitions for children and the young at heart. A must see in Wellington. Free entry adds to it's ease of visiting.
H.
Fascinating with interactive exhibits, it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Would highly recommend visiting the Gallipoli exhibit while it's there.
F.
Gallipoli exhibition in Jan 2022 extremely good...and of course very sad. The nature exhibition is also decent.
A.
For starters, this museum is very well designed and you can feel the thought behind every installment and exhibition. Wether you would like to learn about natural sciences, Maori tattoo culture, New War history or art...or even just gaze from the rooftop at the alluring Wellington skyline, there is something for everyone here. While we didn't take any tours or walkthroughs, the information on various subject matters was profuse and didn't leave one lacking. Currently I believe it's free admission through the end of the month, definitely plan to spend a few hours here.
D.
The biggest and most interactive and family friendly museum we experienced. Highly recommended!
J.
Grand and airy museum with inspiring exhibits. The Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War is a must see, featuring giant sculptures that captures moments through the stories of New Zealander in World War One.
W.
This place is so good, has everything from modern art to maori history, very interesting museum, will go back again soon, just to much to see, so a few hours is not enough, spend a day here at least! :)
M.
Absolutely amazing museum. WW1 exhibit is bueatiful and informative as it should be, dinosaur digging place out the back is great for kids, this place is a libary of knowledge and the best museum in New Zealand in my opinion, strongly suggest you check it out if you have spare time in welly
T.
Very different to the Auckland Museum and its an awesome experience if you want the knowledge..Right next to the Marina walkway and thats fantastic too with all the restaurants and cafes nearby..
S.
World class museum. Didn’t have enough time to explore everything, but will be on the list next visit!
X.
In a raining day encoutering Surrealism at Te Papa.Life is all about perception.Completed with a delicious healthy lunch at a reasonable price.
J.
Te Papa kia kaha.
This museum just keeps getting better.
The new science exhibitions are very hands on and address in a very positive way climate change. You can pledge the changes you can make that will help in the future. Children can post on line and every one joins in including travellers from around the world.
Great place for a wet or windy day. We started out at 10 and left at 4 oclock. We did not see the Art section but from past experience is is worth time too.
Easy to find on the water. Parking underneath. Buses close and you can walk from boats and trains along the waterfront.
Native tree and landscapes outside. Cafes and gift shops.
Toilets well sign posted and lifts and escalators if needed.
G.
So went and seen the Gallipoli display. What an awesome, sobering and very moving exhibit. Something that every kiwi and ocker should see and appreciate. Photos cannot do this exhibit justice.
C.
Brilliant Museum!
Exelent exhibition with quite som interactive features, great for kids, great for adults. We spent half a happy day here. Best thing: no entrance fee!
L.
Hadn’t been for 20 years, still a jewel in the Wellington crown. Especially good hands on children’s’ art space with great books to look at. Well curated accessible free exhibitions. (To be honest the Xi’an terracotta warriors was disappointing and not value for money at all). Nice shop and cafe and brilliant city views too.
A.
I was absolutely blown away. No war movie can top my unforgettable experience. Very eye opening. Would go there again. 🤗🤗🤗
B.
The Museum cafe was good. Nice food with great sitting areas both inside and outside.
J.
For the great price of free, you couldn't beat it. If you wanted to see the paid exhibits, I don't think it was terribly expensive. We didn't get that far. The exterior of the building was very appealing.
We walked up and saw the different globes, 4 of them. As we walked in, we picked up a map, not really necessary and its awkward how large they are. Smaller would work, maybe one that tri folds.
We moved up the escalator to the second floor. We enjoyed ourselves. It was amazing to see the life that used to be and some that still inhabit New Zealand. Sad to see the extinction of populations.
The war exhibit was fascinating. The details that went in to creating the large figures was so time intensive. The pores in the skin, the added hair to the limbs and face. The details are what made the figures come to life. Anybody can mold clay into the shape of a stick figure, but what was created here was really talent and time.
I'm glad they didn't remove this exhibit and that it is still a main attraction at the museum. I wish we would have put more time on our meter, but we didn't and had to leave before checking out the other floors.
Every part of the exhibit was in Maori and English.
J.
Wonderful museum. The nature exhibit is really fun, interactive, and informative... not like many other history museums in the world which tend to be stuffy and boring. There do need to be some more interesting exhibits though. The gift shop is also pretty spectacular with items and collectables from NZ culture; thankfully not filled with a bunch of stuffed toys. This place is DEFINITELY worth a visit when you're in the capital.
D.
Absolutely outstanding!. Highly recommended. And best attraction in Wellington if not N.Z. Had taken my elderly 82 year old father and 80 year old mother for a day trip to Wellington. On arrival we parked in the disabled parking and walked in. I asked if they had a mobility scooter available for my father and not only did they have one it was also "free". Access around the the museum for a mobility scooter was good. Only downfall was the elevator access was limited as everyone (kids included) were using the elevator and not the stairs making it extremely difficult to move up or down within the building as the lifts were ALWAYS FULL.
However this is not the fault of the museum
(Just lazy able bodied people haha) If there was some way they could have an disabled elevator available it would be perfect but ofcourse that's a dollars and cents / fesibility thing.
Plenty of toilets on all floors, cafe was of good standard. And the assitance and service from the museum aids on the museum floor was absolutely impecable. Service with a smile, very approachable, very knowledgable and just seemed to enjoy their work.
It's just made the entire experience that much more enjoyable.
Day certainly well spent!!.
A.
A must visit place if you visit Wellington. It'll easily take anything from 2 to 5 hours depending on your interest. Great place for family and especially kids. My favorite is Gallipoli war exhibition is the best in the world. The exhibition is so good that it brings the world war 1 events to life. Worth the wait in Q and time. There are plenty of other things to do as well. The entry is Free but not the parking.
A.
Great Museum! Exhibits are always changing. They are always engaging and most are interactive. Went to the Alice in Wonderland one today. Really good!
C.
A must-visit place on a trip to Wellington. I had to visit twice as the first time I only went for a quick look what's inside which took me around 2 hours. If you take time to read pretty much everything it would take anyone at least half a day to tour the building.
Here you can see informative exhibits that mostly involve around New Zealand's rich culture. Some of them are interactive too. Also has a cafe if you feel the eat to have a quick bite.
R.
Too much to see in one day. Very impressive.
S.
No changes in exhibition since 2016 when I visited last. Educational but not impressive. The bright side is there's no charge
S.
So the good thing is that it is free.. And it is inside..
So incase you have nothing to do on a windy or rainy day, you can easily kill a couple of hours here.
There are 5 floors of Museums.. The second floor is the war museum (NZ didn't have much of War exposure so its pretty detailed and repetitive in there)
The rest are full of artistic stuff and cultural NZ thing. The country is pretty new, so not much or culture or history exists but they did a good job of displaying it.
B.
Really awesome place.
The scale of our war exhibit was most excellent.
R.
I’m amazed this museum is free entry - they put so much effort into curation and exhibit development. I especially loved the exhibition kn the ANZAC war - so much knowledge but also very emotional.
6.
Great place to do to when in Wellington. Have wanted to go since they did the war thing with weta and that part didn't disappoint. They were so realistic it was freaky seeing someone of that size look so realistic highly recommend
C.
Could easily spend a day here, plus entry is free! Although the special exhibits are definitely worth paying for if you are only here for a short time, they usually become free after a few months if you can wait that long! The Gallipoli exhibit - a joint venture with Weta Workshop - is a must-see.
M.
Amazed by the wide range of exhibits at this museum. Great location by the waterfront. Free to enter and gladly paid the extra fee to see the Terracotta Army on tour during our visit.
Highly recommended
K.
Amazed by this place! Took just over three hours of wandering around including lunch and we still didn't manage to see everything. The Alice In Wonderland collection is a must while it's on display. So many things to look at, well detailed. The display on war was mind blowing. The real life sculptures of the soliders were spectacular, Weta workshops created them. As for all the other displays they were wonderful. If you visit make sure to take your time going around it's worth it.
K.
You can't take your eyes away from those warrior models! WETA workshop did an amazing work! I have never felt like being interactive with this kind of museum before in my life! But here! I am really into all the stuff every single minute! Walking through the GALLIPOLI war section is the whole new world of war museum. Salute for the sacrifice of the brave men - you're the true heroes! Important thing is it's FREE! But let's help contributing the museum by donating some money at the way out. The whole place completely blows my mind! Million percent recommend!!!
F.
I don't think I have ever been to downtown Wellington without paying at least a short visit to the National Museum. I particularly love sitting on the sofas in the Waitangi Treaty area, always feels like you are part of Aotearoa's history
K.
A wonderful museum so much to see and so many amazing exhibitions a MUST* go to place when in Wellington, so much history in this building, across is a Beautiful are which has a food court opposite too which was a perfect place to eat and enjoy the views.
R.
A great place to visit...bring kids and family. Opened after the merging of the National Museum and the National Art Gallery. More than 1.5 million people visit every year.
W.
The best museum in NZ, family easily spend a whole day to go through the lot, must visit 👍
S.
Love this place a lot. Have been roaming this particulat museum for 10 years on and off. Love seeing the changes but recommend to get the Aotearoa music part back. The latest exbition with strings and numbers creating a tunnel was wicked! Happy to hear the Moriori narrative has been corrected.
P.
A must visit to this Museum and history is so detailed with information, visual and art to each display. Each step excites us more wanting to capture the events that took place and what could have happened.
S.
It was interesting looking around the museum for my first time here. It was definitely an interesting experience and one I won’t be forgetting any time soon for my first time in Wellington and New Zealand. The museum is definitely worth checking out and learning about the New Zealand culture
H.
Great museum ! Spent almost a whole day here because there is just so much to see. The war exhibit is a must see ! Very interesting and interactive. The wonderland exhibit you have to pay for but is well worth it if you are interested in Alice in wonderland and all about how the versions were made.
R.
They always put on incredible displays went especially for the WOW exhibit. Incredible well worth the visit
G.
Awesome building, very educational and very well setup. The kids loved it. We will be going back for sure. Too much to see for a single visit!!
M.
What an awesome museum ... wish we had more than 1 day to really take our time to wonder through the exhibitions. Te Taiao was our favorite...really informative and lots of interaction areas for the kids ... and adults too lol. Gallipoli - The scale of War exhibition was WOW the lifesize actual soldiers and there stories...would have loved to have seen a lifesize Maori soldier who was in the Maori Battalion to have been amongst the others too ... can possibly be a little overwhelming for little ones.
J.
Beautiful museum with a great collection. If you are a history/art lover a must place to go. If you are not but you need to kill a couple of hours definitely worth to visit.
C.
Great museum and they have a very interesting exhibition.
N.
Great place to visit while in Wellington. Spread over multiple levels, full of interesting information on New Zealand history, geology, and other specialist exhibitions. Cafe's and parking on site, easy walk from the CBD.
S.
WOW, loved seeing the textiles up close, so would have liked to have been able to touch and feel (sensory activity 😁)
J.
This is a great place to hangout with your friends and family. Free entry to the museum to see the giant sculptures about the story for the war at Galapoli. There are a few showrooms for different topics which are very interesting to adult and children. Outside the museum is a square and port to see the Wellington harbour.
J.
Always something's by new and fascinating. Third time through the Gallipoli exhibit. Makes me cry every time.
S.
The National Museum itself is a beautiful building that is a great place to explore all aspects of New Zealand, from geography, history to wildlife, climate, to local art.
There are no admission fees, but they do need donations. There is also an attached garage.
They have a lot of great performances, including a video that simulates the core of the Earth before the earthquake. They also had a World War I exhibition on the human cost of the Gallipoli campaign, and of course giant squid. This is a huge monster, and it makes me feel cold when I think of it swimming anywhere! They also have this 3D video you can see the squid in action.
G.
Known as Te Papa ((our place) the museum was opened 1998 and gets more than 1.5 million visitors a year and we were two of them. It is a very interesting museum with amazing exhibitions and items of interest to look at. The Gallipoli Scale of Our War exhibition is graphic and memorable. The museum is well laid with plenty of space and there is a nice restaurant as well. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Wellington.
P.
What a place to visit. The War in Gallipoli installation is simply amazing. Haunting, sad, and tough to get through. Take your time and read the stores as it makes the experience that more meaningful.
A.
Best museum I have ever been to!
Was lucky to listen to the orchestra playing last Sunday 12pm to 1 pm!
War exhibition is breathtaking...
Highly recommend to spend there good 5-6 hours at least
A.
One of the staff decided to tell us off for taking a photo(as we'd just had explained we were allowed to) of one of the incredible giants in the Gallipoli display, and told us to go to Weta workshop to see those. This old man must have felt guilty for draft dodging all that time ago? Anyway he needed to keep his opinion to himself and go back to topping up the hand sanitizer stations.
R.
Loved it, wasnt ready to leave. Had to catch a flight home. Shouldve stayed another night, to get to all the exhibits I wanted to visit.
n.
Te papa is one of my favorite places to go in wellington. Neatly arranged exhibits, beautiful explanations, creative, thought provoking and says a lot about your environment and other forces like culture which shapes you. We had been to the bugs show and was blown away by the attention to details, information and the interactive setup. Paradise for inquisitive, bug loving kids and adults. I had more picture but didn't add them because I want you to experience this great show. Go have fun!
D.
Love the museum. The Scale of Our War is a must-see. It has bigger-than-life sculpture crafted to minute details (well done, Weta.) Artistically looks amazing but at the same time it was poignant, moving...
I love playing the digital games too - i can't survive as an alien but fared well as a shipping merchant!
So much to see - both inside and outside. Spent time watching the sailboats from the museum terrace.
J.
Wonderful range of permanent exhibitions. The current Surrealism exhibition is superb. A good range of exhibits, but not so many to completely overwhelm.
K.
Took our grandchildren here for a few hours. The museum was being changed round so missed some of our favourite features but the kids enjoyed the hands on area and had great fun outside in the dinosaur bones area.
S.
Totally love every time I visit TePapa..Lots of exhibitions and interactive things to do.
A.
Absolutely amazing place to visit so much to see and do. The Anzac exhibition is second to none very well organised and takes you to an emotional level into the lives of the people who were there and fought and died for us
M.
Simply superb art work collection for demonstrating war history of New Zealand. Giant sized sculptures tells story of tragedy. Their surrounding sound work also create emotion inside peoples mind. Its an extra ordinary experience to been there to being a witnesses of history.
M.
Really nice museum. Easy to get around and child friendly. Lots of Anzac history. Large Polynesian history including their role in WWII which I found interesting as well as maps of human migration through the Pacific. Remains of farlap on show
J.
I first visited the lantern and the museum but today I went for the event- Terracotta Warriors, level 4 today with my bestie and really enjoyed it. I appreciate the time and effort people put into making the Terracotta Warriors and there were specific things like the sword, the bell and the horses which I liked. Wow!! It was a good experience to learn so many from the Chinese art, especially in NZ.
A.
We’ve visited this place before of course, being residents of Wellington.
Our two highlights this time were Gallipoli and the earthquake house. There was a queue for the ever popular earthquake house, being during the school holidays. The new earthquake video was better than the old one because it is more timeless, not tied to any specific earthquake. To get a glimpse of soliders’ lives in World War I was interesting. It was refreshing to have a stroll through bush city to finish our tour.
The museum is well designed, providing lots of hands on activities for children and adults. We vote Te Papa as the top spot for visitors in Wellington.
P.
One of the best Museums I have ever visited.outstsnding exhibitions. Amazing information sharing and interactive exhibitions. A must visit. Can't believe this was FREE!
M.
What a fantastic FREE musuem! Te Papa has something for everyone, from families to young tourists to the history lover. We went when they had a special Gallipoli exhibit on and that was outstanding. The huge manicans were very realistic and impressive. My favourite section was the contemporary section and the Finale Boquet with the confetti piece.
K.
Great place well organized. Enjoyed the salvador Dali exhibition
H.
On a rainy day during my stay in Wellington, the Te Papa Museum was a great place to go. The free admission was a bonus!! The displays are fabulous and well laid out. I spent several hours in there. There's a restaurant in there that serves assorted food and drink.
R.
What an incredibly beautiful place to visit. Whenever I come to Wellington, I always make the time to drop by Te Papa. The last I visited, there was a special exhibition called Wonderland - focusing on Alice in Wonderland throughout the history, the different versions, and it's an interactive exhibition where you're required to solve mysteries.
C.
What’s traveling to wellington without visiting Te Papa? Absolutely gorgeous place. One of the greatest museums I’ve ever visited.
A.
We loved the exhibition they had for Anzac Day, the large scale models from the Weta Workshop blew us away! Unfortunately we didn’t find the other levels interesting (levels 2 and above) and just skimmed through them
N.
One of the coolest museums I‘ve ever been to. It‘s free and there are many interesting themes - so it‘s really for everyone!
G.
Wonderful experience at the museum. At the time we were at the museum they had a world war II exhibition with large wax soldiers on display... it was simply amazing to see and learn about the history of WWII.
C.
A must if you are in Wellington. The special exhibition is always worth going. The Gallipoli exhibition is breathtaking!
J.
This place is awesome! They have a bunch of different and interesting displays. We were unable to see them all because we only reserved two hours for the museum. Make sure you have enough time!
The crown jewel (Dec. 2017) was the Gallipoli exhibit. It had props made by Weta themselves and everything was really high quality.
Te Papa's location is perfectly near to where the action is in Wellington. It's surrounded by the beautiful docks district.
There is free WiFi and the place is open daily, except on Christmas day.
P.
A really nice place and well taken care of the museum items, the status looks sooo real and can make you feel the war that happened and themaori culture really shows, as well as the natural disaster experience as well.... very nice
N.
Great museum in a gorgeous location on the Wellington waterfront. Spent 4 hours exploring the treasures and culture of New Zealand. Make sure to visit the lookout deck at sunset for a breathtaking view of Wellington harbour
M.
Very good museum that is definitely worth a visit during your stay in Wellington. An excellent view of New Zealand's history and culture on display that I recommend. Lots of interesting exhibits and information in the museum. Free admission and good location in downtown Wellington that is open every day (except Christmas Day) and is well worth a visit.
V.
Need a better way to find your way around otherwise your end up spending all day exploring its hidden gems. Great if you have the time but sometimes one can end up leaving feeling dissatisfied because those gems of interest were not discovered
P.
If you are in Wellington for a day or two or three or whatsoever days then you must visit Te Papa
Level 2 is all about Gallipoli which has some amazing large scale sculptures, this work has always fascinated me especially the craftsmanship and fine detailing.
There’s plenty of other permanent exhibition especially tangata whenua.
Don’t miss it!
C.
An amazing place to visit and in the heart of Wellington. A must to do when over there. There's always exhibitions always held there. We happen to see the Gallipoli and the Brickmans wonder - Lego. Totally worth the visit that day.
B.
A lovely interactive museum with lots to do with the whole family. The customer service is excellent and the special exhibition's are really amazing.
C.
The Gallipoli exhibit in Te Papa museum felt very intimate and surreal that it triggered my emotions in the end. It was the best art exhibition I have ever went to in my life. Some parts of the Te Papa museum was really historical and informative as well.
Floor 4 and 5 where the art room is were filled by very creative and interactive pieces of art.
j.
Interactive and very informative. Can get busy with students on field trip but otherwise quiet and fun. It is also free so what's not to like?
W.
This is how a museum should be! This te papa museum should be a benchmark to all other national museum in the world. Simply amazing - very engaging and interactive. Esp. The Gallipoli (the scale of war) section is a must visit! Definitely a must visit when you are in wellington. What is best is IT'S FREE.
J.
One of the best museums in the world! Very well done and very educational. Visited the Galipoli and the terracotta exhibitions. Very well done! Haven't seen such good presentations for a long time. And non items are either stolen or taken by force from other countries. The entry for some exhibitions is free of charge.
D.
Expert curation holds our national memory. An intriguing item is the ipu whenua which speaks to cultural practices that honour papatuanuku and sustainable practices. Totara christening bowls in our future Aotearoa? Certainly that's something I'd like to see.
S.
Great experience still couldn’t finish the whole museum even though I spent most of the day, worth visiting
S.
Good museum. Execelant way to reinforce our knowledge of New Zealand. The Maori exhibits were very interesting.
R.
The Surrealist exhibition was amazing.
D.
It is a 5 levelled museum with range of Maori culture and traditions. The tours guides for this museums are experienced and active and will explain you the history of displays. It will take time to observe and learn to finish all levels ...It is really interesting...
W.
Wonderful museum! Helped us understand the basis of New Zealand culture, history, and values. It's free and got a nice view over the harbour.
A.
It's a must-visit place in New Zealand. Great place to know vast areas of New Zealand's history. Recommended for anthropology and history research students. Different sites with different exhibition: The Nature (just opened), treaty of waitangi, Te Marae, Gallipoli, café, children area, meeting rooms for functions. You'll never regret your visit to this place.
N.
It's beautiful. Must see gallipoli Anzac war scenes. They so realistic.
E.
A fantastic museum about all you want to learn or know about New Zealand. We had a awesomeness day! And all for free!!!
D.
Great museum, has lots of interesting artifacts. Really great exhibit on ANZAC war. Great for the whole family and its free.
N.
We really enjoyed our time at Te Papa. Our favourite exhibitions were Te Taiao | Nature, Gallipoli: The Scale of War and the Web of Time installation. Highly recommend as a must see place in Wellington.
V.
What an amazing place! Beautiful exhibits, very educational, and friendly staff. A large, wonderful building with free admittance and free WiFi. I was absolutely thrilled to spend all day there and there is enough to do there to merit more than a one day visit.
R.
I really enjoyed this museum!
It has 3 stories and there is an exhibition on each one.
It really helps to learn about the natural history of New Zealand and also of the cultural history. It has a very unique and interactive way if showing the exhibitions and it is truly a fun experience!
I spent 3 hours in the museum and could spend 3 more
I really recommend going there also if you have kids it's very recommended!
J.
Very high quality museum with free admission (donations of course very welcome). Exhibits were excellent and provided a great look at the history of New Zealand.
J.
as a kiwi this place was always shown to me growing up. this is the pinnacle of kiwi history and i know that this place is the best place to go when visiting here, unfortunately the exhibits change a lot and when they took out my favorite exhibit (the long nosed penguin) i was very disappointed and when i asked about it they just told me that i'm "causing a scene" and i'm also "ruining this date, Jason"? i just don't get it
T.
Lots of good exhibits that come in through out the year, as well as some really good permanent exhibitions on the first floor. There are lots of kid-friendly areas as well.
i.
An amazing experience. The Anzac tribute was incredible
G.
Such a nice free entry museum in Wellington... huge place with so many thing to see and experience... they have huge sections from New Zealand old times and modern... I really love history so this place was a paradise for me... I was amazed from the section of Gallipoli which gave me goosebumps... they keep this place clean and the staff doing an amazing job helping every visitor with everything they want to know...
A.
Love this museum and its exhibits, particularly the Gallipoli which told the story of the soldiers who fought and their encounters! Definitely a must visit when you're in Wellington.
J.
Great museum that can feel overwhelming. Unfortunately they were installing a new exhibit during our visit which meant the constant sound of construction. That made it hard to hear videos, which could use subtitles.
L.
Excellent, not least because it's free to get in. So much to see, you could spend a whole week there and still not do it justice. The gallipoli exhibition was particularly interesting and extremely well done.
C.
Very lovely museum with interesting exhibitions. Would definitely recommend even when the weather is nice.
S.
Unfortunately ugly building and a bit flashy by half slightly tacky inside. Such a shame that the building is so badly designed.
Bit embarrassing for our capital city actually.
d.
We visited the museum, the galipoly exibit was first class.Next we visited the natural science exibit, this was also great.
We were disapointed because we thought that there could have been more to see.
J.
Lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Helps that it is free as well. Found that it lacked a bit in signposting where you should go. Without actually having a map of the place I don't know if you would be able to ensure you have seen all the exhibitions.
Great experience with one staff member: pointed me towards the passports section because he thought I was Irish (definitely not) when I explained I am from Auckland he pointed me towards the exhibition on volcanoes. 🤔
Definitely visit the Gallipoli exhibition. Very eye-opening.
J.
Went to Surrealist Art exhibition at 5pm but wasnt quite enough time to see it all in the hour before closing so had to rush last bit. But well worth it, friendly helpful staff
J.
Brilliant museum, ANZAC exhibit is incredibly moving and breathtaking in visual prowess
B.
Totally with a Visit. Been twice and still haven't seen everything, it is a museum that truly needs a day to explore and if you can get a guided tour they are worth doing you learn soo much.
A.
There's always something new to discover, or re-discover but I came specifically to see the Gallipoli exhibit this time. I was absolutely blown away and can't recommend it enough.
c.
I have seen many museums worldwide, this is incredible! Hats off to WETA and it's contribution to their war exhibition, very emotional!!
D.
Great museum fully stocked with engaging exhibits. A tip for locals don't buy the tickets when a new exhibition comes up because it's usually free after 3 months or so such as the Anzac exhibit. Loved it but the science component of the exhibits is missing like why is that happening. Still great time there but product are overpriced
D.
I would recommend this to anyone. The building is unusual and fits in with the location. There are lots of different sections and you can learn a great deal. You could also spend a long time in there. Very rare that you get things for free these days and this is a must visit to spend a few hours and broaden you knowledge. There is also a cafe and shop.
P.
Awesome place! Free! So beautiful, so much histories. You have to try the golden days movie, the mixing room and the 'unwelcome guests'! So much history, I will never forget.
P.
Basically an alternative to Auckland's Museum! Love the historical Gallipoli and the nature exhibit hehe! 😁
p.
As always an excellent exhibition at Te Papa. This time Rita Angus.
I wouldn't dream of visiting Wellington without spending some time at Te Papa
A.
I have been here several times, but I haven’t finished reading it. The exhibitions that have changed from time to time have increased the difficulty of reading. Currently on display is the Gallipoli exhibition and the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition. Both reveal the utilitarianism of the military leaders to sacrifice others for their glory. My grandfather had been jealous in France and Belgium, and it changed a lot after coming back. One of the best exhibitions is the Maori and its history (not just the Pakeha part of their history).
H.
An amazing place. Good to take family. Very informative.so much to see. The anzac display is mind blowing. The statues in the display look so real.
B.
It’s the greatest museum I’ve ever seen!! I’d like to spend all day to this museum!!! Don’t miss it!!
B.
So much to see and do here! The Gallipoli exhibit was incredibly well done as were the other displays. You'll need a good few hours to get through everything. Worth visiting indeed.
e.
Only went to the Gallipoli exhibition this time. It was amazing! I recommend you take your time walking through it, the giant sculptures and their stories are very touching.
D.
Great museum. Has a blender in an exhibit.
J.
This is one of the best museum ever. The intricate details they made with the giant statues representing the people who experienced the war are so delicate that they look so real. It never fails to make us feel the emotions of being grateful that we now live in a better world.
The place also has a good restaurant on the 1st floor where you can dine in or choose to stay outdoors to appreciate more the beauty of the place.
B.
Great stuff. Visiting with family and there were exhibits each family member could look forward to. From informative and sobering exhibits to weird subjective exhibits only the artistic elite get.
S.
Great place. Lots of very informative exhibitions. Some detailing the history and geography of New Zealand and also travelling exhibitions. Free entry is awesome. Sometimes you have to pay for special exhibitions. My favourites are the outdoor walk and the art gallery. I would highly recommend the Gallipoli exhibition before it closes.
D.
Greatest Museum one of the greats in NZ history. Any historical point in NZ they have it all. From WW1 Gallipoli WW2 Anzac Treaty of Waitangi etc.
J.
(Spoiler alert for Terracotta warriors exhibit). Te Papa continues to enthrall whether the 1st or 50th visit. Unfortunately much of the museum was closed during my most recent visit, but the visiting Terracotta Warriors exhibit more tha compensated. And I look forward to the re-opening of some of Te Papa's best sections.
D.
Well worth a visit here. Free to get in and full of fun and interactive exhibitions for the children to use and enjoy.
A.
The Te Papa museum of Wellington has different exhibits, from the New Zealand fauna to the geology.
A special exhibit about the ANZAC soldiers who fought at The Gallipoli battle, made by the Weta workshop. It’s a great emotional experience.
I recommend the Te Papa museum.
C.
Amazing family friendly place with something for everyone to enjoy. Nice cheerful people at the bag drop desk and what a wonderful service. I spent 4 hours at the museum before catching a flight and not having to lug my bag around made my visit so much more enjoyable.
D.
I just love taking my toddler to Te Papa. He loves wandering around the various exhibits and especially enjoys a fluffy and snack in the little cafe.
The activities for children are great and we can go back for repeated visits and it's always fun for both him and me.
L.
Amazing exhibits, lots of space and plenty to do. Staff were friendly.
M.
Being it ‘the best museum of New Zealand’ I was expecting more. I went with my family and we are spanish speakers, so as none of the explanations were translated to any other languages but Maori or English, it was really difficult to understand everything that was in the museum. However, it took us only 2 hours to see everything. Would I recommend it? Yes, it is nice because you can learn something about the Maori culture. Would I come back? No, definitely not
T.
Simply put Outstanding. Take a walk thru time in the WW I exhibit. A true on the ground experience. Only the bullets and smell of war are missing. Looking back one can only ask why so much blood and treasure were spent. Looking forward well... Enjoy the local artists. This museum has a strong children component, so bring the kids. Inside and out beautiful.
S.
Great visit to Te Papa today. Main reason was the WOW exhibit, but also saw Web of Time
J.
Love it and its getting better all the time we will be back to view more kia ora😊❤💯🙏🙏
w.
This museum explains every wonders in New Zealand in the simplest and interesting ways of describing it better than any other museum.
All exhibitions are sophisticated and inspiring to make them understood and crave for further.
For visitors like me, English as second language, wifi helps checking dictionary online.
P.
Walk in the City
The weather couldn't make its mind up but I did. Late afternoon contributed soft light and an inspiring atmosphere to the leisurely stroll
#newzealand #tepapa
L.
I only had a couple hours (not enough time) but managed to run through and get an overview. Incredible museum housing very thought provoking and educational exhibits. Give it a day if you can afford the time.
M.
Great museum the Mars exhibition was very interesting and cool. Will be coming back here each time I visit
J.
I don't get to Te Papa as often as i should and haven't been since we had our daughter. The stars finally combined on the weekend so we could get along and we had an excellent time. The 2 year old loved the exhibits (more then i expected to be honest) and was really drawn to the Ronnie van Hout and the Fommison paintings.
My only critique it's probably that it can feel like there are too many open spaces in some places and then it suddenly narrowed in others. It's not the worst, and there's not much they can do now so ....
S.
Great experience for our children. Haven't been in Te Papa until then. Some rude people but the collections and history stored in there is awesome.
J.
A great educational museum. Surprisingly it's free admission. Good place to know the history of Mauri and New Zealand.
T.
Went to the terracotta soldiers exhibit. It was absolutely amazing, each piece had such intricate detail it was like looking at art and history. The larger statues were so immense and left me and my friend in awe. Would highly recommend! We spent 2 and a half hours just in this exhibit
L.
Fantastic museum with loads of interesting and interactive exhibits. You can tell a lot of thought went in as everything flows and comes together to tell a story rather than being a lot of things just put in a room. The Gallipoli exhibit is a must see and admission to the museum is free! Bug Lab is $15 extra but well worth the additional cost.
M.
Great new exhibition for NZ natives and a lot to look at for free. The paid exhibitions are usually with it and subsidised enough to keep them cheapish
V.
Great experience for a national museum. Entry fee is free, but if you travel by car, the park fee is quite expensive. Even though, this is highly recommend when you’re in Wellington.
A.
This is not to be missed. Immense history, culture, science and nature information. Kids will love it and adults will highly appreciate.
e.
Fantastic modern museum. Always something interesting to look at even if you've visited before.
P.
So, so good. Best museum in New Zealand, hand down. Whatever there is on; is always a must see.
Just like the (terracotta warrior's expedition) as you can see. That was a once in a life time experience.
A MUST SEE!!!
S.
What a celebration of life portrayed at this place! The Maori culture is mixed with the white history and showcased in its communal glory what new zealand is! The changing periodical exhibitions are always worth seeing as I was mindblown by presence of the terracotta statues and the winged immortal! Always and ever and ever again, every time I am in Wellington, I always find my way in here.
H.
What an asset for the capital and for the country. Outside the ever-changing sculptures are creative, eclectic and relevant.
K.
It's an excellent museum - we went during the exhibition about the Gallipoli Campaign. Fantastically done. Also the permanent exhibitions are good and give a good overview of New Zealand. Go if you are in town.
V.
So many things to see..loved everything the War sculptures very fascinating designes in detailed was gobsmacked. Love love them..
A.
It's an awesome place for a family trip, you need some time in hand to see everything, and it's for free !!
R.
I enjoyed the nature exhibition and Maori art. Those are totally fantastic so I spent over 4 hrs around, reading most the labels and valuing the community projects.
T.
Te Papa has lots to see and do and displays are always changing. Especially enjoyed talking the lift to the top floor to find the rooftop lookout!
C.
Definitely a must visit location. Plenty to see and best of all there is no entry fee. Take your family or even go alone. Really enjoyed the war museum.
L.
A must visit in Wellington
Free entrance
Very interesting Museum
Do not miss the biggest Octopus in the world
G.
In my personal experience I really enjoyed this place, its huge, you can expend the whole morning in a fantastic family entertainment, there is an area for kids, where to eat, and a lot to see, if you're a fan of nature and history, this is the place to visit.
M.
Visited on a terribly busy day and wasn’t able to see any of the popular exhibits. Still had a nice time wandering around the museum.
K.
Beautiful exhibitions with lots of history and fantastic stories. The War exhibition was so realistic and portrayed in an amazing way.
D.
Great museum, lots of information about Maoris and history of New Zealand. It's also confronting for humans I think to see how we again changed a country with taking over and exploiting the rich materials ext.
For me, as a traveller its great to have the opportunity to visit a museum for free!
We spend some time on each level and enjoyed a coffee and dessert.
V.
We had so much fun here!!! And learned a lot!!!Beautiful interactive museum, with a lot to see and to do too!!! There is also a cottage that you go into and it starts to shake and move as it simulates an earthquake!! So Cool!!!My favorite part was Gallipoli exhibition were we felt like being in a real war, plus there were these giant soldiers that looked so real, with sweat and blood coming out of their skin!!!!You could feel their pain it looked that real!!Insane!!!
The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savaşı), was a campaign of the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey), from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. The Entente powers, Britain, France and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the straits that provided a supply route to the Russian Empire. The Allies' attack on Ottoman forts at the entrance of the Dardanelles in February 1915 failed and was followed by an amphibious landing on the Gallipoli peninsula in April 1915 to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul).[13]
In January 1916, after eight months' fighting, with approximately 250,000 casualties on each side, the land campaign was abandoned and the invasion force withdrawn. It was a costly defeat for the Entente powers and for the sponsors, especially First Lord of the Admiralty (1911–1915), Winston Churchill. The campaign was considered a great Ottoman victory. In Turkey, it is regarded as a defining moment in the history of the state, a final surge in the defence of the motherland as the Ottoman Empire retreated. The struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War of Independence and the declaration of the Republic of Turkey eight years later, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who rose to prominence as a commander at Gallipoli, as founder and president.
The campaign is often considered to be the beginning of Australian and New Zealand national consciousness; 25 April, the anniversary of the landings, is known as Anzac Day, the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in the two countries, surpassing Remembrance Day (Armistice Day)
M.
It's a great museum and it's free to get into - the exhibitions on plate tectonics is perfect to understand why earthquakes happen.
D.
Wonderland exhibit was fun, surprising and you could stay as long as you like, worth the $20?? is debatable. As for the rest of Te Papa, I could stay there all day! There's so much to see.
B.
All families, friends & visitors would have a profound understanding of our wonderful country. Always enjoy the Gallipoli Exhibition.
K.
We are so lucky to have this National Treasure in Wellington
every time I go there are new things to see and I just love going back to see some of the old treasures
K.
If you’re visiting Wellington, you should not miss this.. Reserve 2 - 3 hours for this
S.
Any place that delivers free education I love! Beautiful exhibits from WW history, New Zealand natural history to an exhibit about geography. And that was only one floor.
C.
We walked over on a beautiful morning for breakfast at the Cafe. The menu choice was great, as was the service. Pricing was okay. I found the coffee (flat white) rather strong, and the food order was not filled correctly, but was quickly remedied. We were there early, so it wasn't busy.
E.
A must do while you visited to Wellington is Museum. There is few museums and art gallery in Wellington. I visited twice, the first time is for history of world War and the second time is for Terracotta Wariors. Nice place to visit 👍
Z.
This museum is so fun and interactive! We’re college students and had a great time. The museum is huge and each floor gives off a different mood. Absolutely recommend....not to mention, it’s free!
R.
Free entry to museum. Maps available in all areas. Friendly staff everywhere to guide. You need minimum 3-4 hours. Kids section available. Lots to learn - History, Art, Culture, etc. Great stuff!!
S.
Really enjoyed Gallipoli: The scale of our war
Karipori: Te pakanga nui
Te Papa has joined forces with Weta Workshop to create an exhibition like no other.
This ground-breaking exhibition tells the story of the Gallipoli campaign in World War I through the eyes and words of eight ordinary New Zealanders who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances.
S.
Great place if you have half a day free. Recommend the Gallipoli exhibition
J.
One of the best museums I've seen in my life. Take an entire day to visit it.
O.
An amazing museum with very well curated exhibitions. These take you through the history and culture of New Zealand through all walks of life. Plenty of opportunities for children (and adults) to interact with the exhibits. Free entrance in to such a museum is unbelievable.
S.
Perfect rainy day activity. The Gallipoli exhibition was sombre but very educational and we spent a good portion of our day in there reading everything. Hand sanitiser located everywhere which is great and clear mapping of the museum itself available so we knew how to plan our visit well.
E.
Love this place!
The Gallipoli exhibition is immense! You will lose yourself in there with the detail, really makes you appreciate the sacrifices made by so many.
The exhibits are all good, even the art gallery at the top. Café has good coffee and a big gift shop, everything you need!
F.
A must do if in Wellington. Plenty of things to do for free or shell out the extra bucks for one of the major exhibitions.
Had a delicious Afghan biscuit in the cafe. Fantastic staff.
R.
love bringing my kids here family day out was absolutely awesome !! great staff cute little cafe area & kids fully enjoyed their time
m.
Was an awesome journey going through the gallipoli war and reading all that happened back in the days, very heart touching what the soldiers endured back then, great views from the harbour and even listening to some of the tour guides mentioning my whakapapa, heritage and tikanga was so great to see people interested 😍😍 The rest of the tour around te papa involved our Maori culture and we were not allowed to take pictures, my uncle went to te papa for an art exhibition, he presented a 3D miniture Maori tables and chairs 😊😊 I was trying to see if it was displayed but they must've had it in a vault at the back 😜😜 security purposes 🙂🙂
O.
Lovely museum, favorite expeditions here were the Lego and the video games ones they were class.
T.
Wonderful opportunity to learn about New Zealand culture and history. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable. A must see for any tourist!!
M.
Best museum in the country, a must visit in Welly. I happened to be there before xmas last year and had the fortune to see the Gallipoli exhibition, totally blown away!
N.
Needs s full day to appreciate it. Very expensive to visit if you are not a local. Great for kids
I.
Everyone should take some time to visit the Gallipoli exhibit at Te Papa. It is awesome. I dare you not to shed a tear or two. It’s very thought provoking.
유.
Always good to visit with kids
S.
Something for kids of all ages. Certain exhibits will cost extra but that's fair and there's heaps for those who don't want to pay extra. Loads of interactive displays. A must see in Wellington
M.
Wow, what an amazing experience, heaps of information, both written and tactile. I spent almost the whole day there and still didn't see it all. Definitely going to go again.
S.
WOW Up Close was amazing! Café on same level was great too, and not too pricey.
Y.
The tour guide service can be purchased at the front desk, the explanation is great, and the price is very reasonable. Learn more about the combination of history and modernity. Only when nature and technology are combined can we have a better future!
J.
Everyone kept raving about The Papa but since we're not big museum people we didn't really pay much attention. Decided to visit anyhow and were blown away. This museum is wonderful for kids with loads of interactive exhibits that really engage adults and kids. The Gallipoli exhibit was really well done and fascinating, but a bit gruesome for young kids. I also enjoyed seeing the colossal squid. Kids loved the Earthquake house and birds nest. And you can't beat the entry fee (free). Would have liked to see more but ran out of time.
T.
One of my favourite places to visit. I enjoy the many exhibitions of history and modern art, culture, and natural history.
It is free admission.
It is accessible for all people.
There are cafeterias and a souvenir shop.
And a secure cloak room to store belongings while you spend time in the museum.
There is a viewing deck on the top floor to look out over Wellington & the harbour.
C.
Staff are helpful. The gallipoli exhibit is great.
R.
The best museum I've ever been to. Make sure you keep a full day free as there's so much to see and do.
r.
What a wonderful experience, to anyone who hasn't been, I highly recommend
M.
There's nothing more iconic in Wellington than this place. I thoroughly enjoyed the Alice in Wonderland exhibition. Truly magical!
L.
We only visited the war memorial, but it was stellar! There were so many stories from individuals who participated in the war, and the texts were respectful to both sides. The museum appeared to have more to offer, but we had already spent an hour in the war exhibition and had to move on.
The statues built by Weta studio were amazingly detailed and huge! I recommend visiting the museum and the studio together.
G.
Excellent must go to destination if you have any interest in New Zealand history.
November 2018 showing a Gallipoli exhibition by Peter Jackson and the SFX team from the Tolkien films. Details the ANZAC campaign in terrific detail but made very accessible.
C.
Wow, what a fantastic museum! Free entry although parking needs to be paid for. Wonderful range of exhibits. I especially loved the WW1 exhibit with the mannequins telling soliders stories. Such amazing details on the models put me right in the story. 100% worth a visit if in Wellington.
C.
Second time here, I will never get bored!
T.
Interactive and stunning exhibits. Child friendly. Lovely cafe with delicious and well priced food available within. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours at Te Papa.
P.
Awesome museum, the lego exhibit was brilliant and the size of our war (WW1 exhibit) was truly stunning and certainly brought home the horrors of war
L.
Magnificent, moving Gallipoli exhibition. Epitomizes the futility of war. Compulsory lesson for all kiwi.
F.
We had a great time learning the story of War, it was sad and filled with so much history and story.. my son enjoyed it too, loved that it was a free entrance too.. Would highly recommend this, kids and adults would love it, there is free wifi too..
A.
Fabulous Meuseum with a reasonably priced, high quality cafe/bistro.
The Scale of Gallipoli exhibit was stunning and truly moving. I was not the only person wiping a tear from my eye.
For the motor cycle /engineering enthusiast, the Britten display should not be missed.
I would have given 5 stars but the natural history section, my main reason for going, was closed for renovations.
D.
It is a 5 levelled museum with range of Maori culture and traditions. The tours guides for this museums are experienced and active and will explain you the history of displays. It will take time to observe and learn to finish all levels ...It is really interesting...
D.
An amazing facility for one and all to visit and explore ...
J.
This is a great place to hangout with your friends and family. Free entry to the museum to see the giant sculptures about the story for the war at Galapoli. There are a few showrooms for different topics which are very interesting to adult and children. Outside the museum is a square and port to see the Wellington harbour.
D.
I would recommend this to anyone. The building is unusual and fits in with the location. There are lots of different sections and you can learn a great deal. You could also spend a long time in there. Very rare that you get things for free …
I.
We only had about an hour and a half to spend here before we caught the ferry. I could have spent an entire day there and not seen everything. If you decide to go, I would allow yourself at least four hours. They have a great Gallipoli …
K.
Most interesting wonderful museum I've ever seen.
A.
Absolutely amazing place to visit so much to see and do. The Anzac exhibition is second to none very well organised and takes you to an emotional level into the lives of the people who were there and fought and died for us
A.
Awesome experience and what a day so much to see
M.
Great to see. Had some intellectual hours in there.
T.
Amazing museum. Highly interactive, with something for everyone to see, do and enjoy. Make sure you have loads of time to explore everything or visit over a number of days. My toddler loved it too! I'd say this is 2nd only to the Smithsonian in all the world-wide museums I have visited.
L.
Very good museum, shows the history and the current status of NZ in several interestings exhibitions. Highly recommended.
b.
Impeccable!!!!!!! Perfect place for the kids and the parents! Some floors have fun learning activities for the kids, and the other floors look into the history of New Zealand! Very fun place.
A.
This is a place to know the history of New Zealand well. You will be taken to memory of the past with very good audio visuals. liven up the past with technology
R.
Free entrance fee, huge place, educative and lovely experience. We went to The Great War Gallipoli Exhibition.
Harbour view from the rooftop is magnificent!
H.
Amazing place 🤠 I can't believe it was free lol even if I had to pay to enter I would pay.
K.
What an amazing display. The attention to detail is incredible. The description of the NZ involvement in the first world war was so interesting. Worth a visit for sure. Give yourself at least an hour and a half
R.
Great experience...the ANZAC Gallipoli exhibition is amazing...highly recommend to domestic and international tourists.
S.
Great place to visit with great historical art and inform yourself about New Zealand history of Gallipoli.
г.
Lots of interesting things to see. I enjoyed the Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War. It is a must see for everyone. There are toilets on every floor. I recommend you should visit this place if you are visiting Wellington.
L.
Te Papa has always been an amazing place to visit and today was no different!! I really loved just taking you time to wonder around, no rush!
M.
Great museum. So much to see. It covers most aspects of New Zealand; the nature, history, world war etc. And it is free admission.
B.
World class exhibits. And admission is free. What more can you ask for.
C.
Great exhibitions and a lovely spot for private functions to be held as well.
F.
I don't know what we would do if we did not have Te papa. Great for School holidays. Would love to have more places for kids to do more crafts, even if we have to pay.
R.
Gallipoli exhibition was great. Would recommend family visit here
K.
Excellent showcase of NZ history and culture. Plenty of interactive exhibits for children.
M.
A must see!!! But keep in mind the museum is huge and therefore almost a whole day is needed... But worth the effort experience.
V.
Always something new to see and do at Te Papa! A fantastic treasure of NZ and a 'must do' when you're visiting the capital city.
R.
I love the museum very much and that's why I go everytime I visit Wellington. The 1st World War display is absolutely amazing and really emotional, the best I have ever seen, absolutely world class.
J.
Best museum in NZ. There are different floors and both adults and children will. be well entartained. Maori représentations quite nice.
Of course you cannot compare it with museum overseas.
J.
Gallipoli exhibition was fantastic, went to Weta Workshops earlier where they explained about making the statues.
A.
Go here usually once a year. Recently went to see the Terracota warriors and really enjoyed it. This was in April near the end of the exhibition and it was still busy as ever. Good family day out or for school trips. Would advise to come and check out this amazing museum if visiting Wellington. Have also been to functions here including school balls. Really amazing place. Where you can learn lots. A place for anyone no matter what age!
A.
Have been to Te Papa with my son several times. Always something new and interesting to see. The scale of war exhibition was amazing. Lots of natural displays with information to learn from. Highly reccomend as a family outing.
P.
Got to do more than one visit to this place.
R.
Extremely informative museum with many different exhibitions. Latest exhibition features information on the war efforts of NZ.
Unique viewing experience and cultural experience if you are interested in such.
Would recommend to anyone that is interested in the historical aspects of New Zealand.
M.
Brilliant musuem for all ages, so many things to see and explore with a good balance of interactive and technological displays.
The Gallipoli and Wonderland exhibitions are really well done. Note these cost to get in (the musuem is free otherwise).
W.
The exhibits were fab. The Gallipoli exhibition was an emotional viewing and brought me to tears. What a sacrifice!
K.
Arrived at 10am for opening time, but the Scale of Our War exhibition was still a little busy. Absolutely phenomenal work and a very well curated museum.
X.
Free entry and supported by donations. Great exhibition about the war and how New Zealanders have fought bravely. Also loved the exhibition on women and feminism. Really proud of NZ for respecting women.
L.
The museum never disappoints you. Lots of interactive activities for children. The Gallipoli exhibition was so moving. Take your time when you walk through there, you feel the sadness and almost experience the reality of what these people went through. So real, it makes you think how they have suffered, so that we have freedom...
J.
This place was so much fun. The kids (big and small) had so much to find, look at, touch, and play with. Fantastic for a free excursion (donate what you can). Will definitely visit again
R.
Just breathtaking. We did the guided tour to start with and totally worth it. Paul, our guide was amazing. We walked for miles and still didn't do everything. Do not miss the Gallipoli exhibit. Yes, you will shed a tear or two too.
R.
So incredible we went back 3 times in 2 days. Well worth every moment. It's free so anyone can visit. A beautiful and inexpensive gift shop as well. The Gallipoli exhibition was very moving. Take your time. Enjoy
L.
It’s a good place to know about NZ. I have learned alot about NZ, Maori culture, the war in this museum. There are many things to see.
Free entrance except for special exhibitions.
J.
Had a great day. Enjoyed the WOW experience. Then spent some slow sombre time in the Gallipoli area. Lots of our history as a nation.
R.
Was there on a quick visit to primarily view both The Terra Cotta Warriors, and the Gallipoli 'Scale of our War' exhibits: both were spectacular!
S.
Loved the experience. Amazingly and free, well done 👏🏽
Me and my kids had fun and it was really nice to visit the war exposition during ANZAC weekend, quite emotional, specially when you take the time to hear the story.
A.
Always a delight to wander the halls. Enjoyed the interactive displays. Chldren were having a whale of a time. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable.
W.
Amazing experience. The Gallipoli exhibit was top notch and very moving. The giant lifelike statues created by Weta Workshop were breathtaking. The skill and artistry involved has to be seen to be believed - modern works of art.
The rest of the exhibits were equally brilliant and informative. This museum is up there with some of the best I’ve been to. Bravo.
