Reviews of The New Zealand Portrait Gallery
Absolutely loved the quality of the work in here and the variety. We popped in for a look and it was peaceful and relaxing and I particularly loved this seraphine pick painting stunning!
My favourite art gallery in Wellington.
It's quite compact, so you can spend time looking at each painting photo and not get overwhelmed by hundreds. They change their exhibits regularly, which is a bonus.
Its fine. A lot crammed in to an already small space, and injudicious use of the centre of the room, made it feel cramped and forced us up close to the works. We were there to see the Cook exhibition on Hamilton East in the 1990s.
Our visit timed with the Maori artists exhibition, some great portraits and exhibits, well set out with seating.
Tidy restroom if needed.
Great collection of art and free entry!
Some beautiful portraits, drawings and paintings. I wasn't so sure about the winner myself, has I saw 2 other exhibits that I thought were spectacular. Worth going.
Very few pieces of art but interesting. Fun activity for the kids, drawing on a large roll of paper.
At the moment "Being Chinese in NZ" is at the gallery.
Im a great, great, grandson of the first.
Appo Hocton. Nelson 1842.
All so Morrison & Inwood familys. All 1842 Nelson. All coming together in my grandparents
Loved the gallery! It was so hot outside but lovely air conditioning inside. We were so pleased we were able to view the photo's and information about the early Chinese settlers in NZ.
Excellent Peter McIntyre exhibition on until 16 May 2021. Lovely gallery; always has interesting exhibitions
The curator expresses a wish to expand what portraiture can be, and this gallery does exactly that. Small but brilliant.
Just a wonderful gallery celebrating portraits connected with New Zealand and Moana Oceania.
Well worth a visit, the Portrait Gallery hosts a regularly-changing series of boutique exhibitions. We visited the Being Chinese in Aotearoa exhibition, which was fascinating. There were desk games and activities to occupy younger visitors too.
Love this place and its excellent exhibitions and super friendly staff. Only just realized functions can also be held here. A must do in central Wellington.
My 3rd time here and the exhibitions never disappoint.
Wonderful gallery.
Free! Impressive collection of portrait paintings... not very large but i felt the quality of exhibits made up for it. Celebrates local nz artists past and present. A must see for artists and art students. I only spent 20-30mins here.
I used this as a meeting place for a friend. It was a great place to start that was free and gave a talking point for the awkward silences in between conversation. The art styles ranged significantly from the kinda of photography you'd see on Instagram to the kind of fine art that really showed off the skill. There was at least 1 painting im sure you'll find which you'll like. By having such a large range together it's give a pretty good talking point to who ever your with about what you appreciate in art and what you could care less about. New Zealand culture and telling the story of the average person was the main running theme and it felt like a stage for those who are usually not seen but very important to society. I'd highly recommend as a starting point or an ending long to your museum tour along Wellington.
I have always wanted to go to the exhibitions that are on here and have now managed to get to my first one for world refugee day! Beautiful stories and photos! Will definitely be going to more!
Nice gallery on the waterfront in Wellington. The gallery itself is located inside one of the historic waterfront shed buildings and has a open and peaceful atmosphere. Entry is free.
Excellent showing very enjoyable NZ history and work of Peter McIntyre the Artist and the small town of Kakahi and its inhabitants
I really enjoyed the New Zealanders at work exhibition and there is a lot to be inspired by here. I enjoyed the students in residence work, but this part of the gallery felt a touch wishywashy compared to the former.
I am ashamed to admit that I was totally unaware that we had a National Portrait Gallery! It is small bit the collection is very interesting and the current exhibition called Edith and George was really fascinating. The portrait of Celia Lashlie was the reason I went and was a highlight!
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata is an art gallery in the Wellington waterfront precinct. It features regularly changing exhibitions of New Zealand portrait art and photography, and is a fantastic place to put a face (lots of actually) to the name of New Zealanders who have made this country what it is, and continue to do so - really a great way to learn about the history and contemporary live in New Zealand!
Located in the historic Shed 11 building, the gallery is spacious and usually not very busy, so a great place to see some art and enjoy some peace and quiet time. Free entry usually but there is a koha (donations) box.
Great place, amazing exhibitions
Take your time and wander about on the gallery. Lots of great new Zealand content to browse. Make sure you take it slow and be a nice person and leave a donation
Always have great exhibitions here. Free to pop in and enjoy when passing.
Great Marti Friedlander exhibition. Friendly welcome, free entry, but feel free to make a donation.
Really interesting display of recent portraits for a competition. Some amazing work. Just a one room display space, but well worth a visit.
It has lot of portraits, this place is only if you are portrait enthusiastic.
15 min is enough to cover it all.
This is only if you stay for long in Wellington.
Entrance is free.
I always visit this gallery when I come to Wellington. The exhibitions are always well curated and cover a range of work by New Zealand and other Pacific artists both old and new.
I went to the gallery for the international knit in public day and enjoyed learning how to knit Portuguese style. The event organisers provided uo with tea and coffee and sweet treats and made us feel at home in the gallery.
Loved the variety of art and reading about the history
A wonderful exhibition of New Zealand fine art portraits for 2020 portrait competition. Situated on the Wellington waterfront.
Great place to go! I would recommend going when the new Zealand portrait awards are on as there is always some excellent work from all around new Zealand showing.
This place is a hidden gem for me during sunny waterfront walks. Always excellent exhibits curated, particularly liked Wayne Youle and the recent caricature exhibition.
Friendly staff, beautiful display, free to public.
Small gallery with one or two exhibitions at any one time. Can have some very interesting work depending on your tastes.
Really enjoyed the hour here with my dad a retired stills photographer whose passion is photo portraits
Yeah nah yeah, not a whole lot of art works that grabbed me. Nice that there were activities for children.
This is a superb gallery that has always pleased us. Great and challenging works to see at all exhibitions.
Always interesting exhibitions. Not a huge space but makes up for it with quality
Fantastic exhibition of Jacqueline Fahey paintings. Excellent video too. Good space.
Friendly staff and great exhibitions
Small but some great portraits. Some political and funny, some beautiful, some highly-skilled, some just plain weird.
It's free, the staff are nice, pop your head in!
Fantastic exhibition on right now. Friendly staff at front desk. Worth going to
The gallery was in the throes of transitioning from one exhibition to another, but from what was available to the public its definitely worth a visit. Free entry.
A wonderful part of the city. Beautifully laid out gallery. Free!
Inspirational, makes me want to bust out some paints and have a go. Lovely warm spot on a cold day too.
Beautiful portraits! Well worth a visit!
