Reviews of Wellington Museum
R.
The most brilliantly thought out muesem I have ever been to. With a emphasis on Maritime and the history of wellington
I love the displays and there are various displays to keep you exploring and interested. Recommend the time travel machine upstairs well worth a watch
Highly recommend if you live in wellington or visiting go and have a look. Entry by donation easy worth a sizeable donation
G.
This museum is well worth a visit. Packed with treasures and fantastic displays, a great balance of information to read and items to see. Lots of interactive stuff to hook the kids in too. They especially loved the collection of items where they got to vote on which history they believed was true. The Wahine story was presented with great respect too.
S.
A really eclectic little museum that tells the story of Wellington's maritime history, as well as being a quirky window into Wellington culture. The displays are over several floors with audio visual components as well. The staff are lovely and there is a great little gift shop as well.
P.
Fantastic little Museum with plenty to see as the story of Wellington is explained.
Many of the exhibits are interactive which makes our children explore with their curiosity.
Make sure you go all the way to the attic space, as it truly is full of great things linking to the past.
D.
Loved it, great museum, so much relevant Wellington info, will come again.
A.
Felt welcomed as soon as we walked through the door(by Emma) just made us feel relaxed immediately. Wiramu was our guide and lucky for us we were the only people on the tour! Such an incredible way to be introduced to the museum and history of Wellington. He is very knowledgeable and is passionate about telling you which definitely makes the tour more interesting! We got the package deal through Bookme but wouldve paid way more just for the tour - highly recommend, especially if you re short on time. The fish'n'chips (included) are from a local restaurant less than 2mins from the museum- just beautiful! The boat is big enough to accommodate over 60 people easily so wasn't too much of an issue a getting a seat. Make sure you go upstairs and sit at the front for the most amazing views! Wine and beer available on board for a reasonable cost. Somes/Magic Island is just magic, especially on a beautiful day like we had! Fantastic trip highly recommend for visitors and Wellingtonians alike!
R.
Wonderful museum with so much history as well as a bit of modern mixed in. Set aside a few hours as there are lots of interactive things to do and see.
A.
A real hidden gem! We spent so much time here, admiring a different displays...really nicely done, very interesting!
I.
This museum is well worth a visit when in Wellington. The displays are very well done and sympathetic to the historic building they are housed in.
B.
Really underrated little museum and there is actually lots in there! Great Wellington history around shipping etc and some nice kiwiana history. Great for kids too although not much hands on exhibits like there is at Te Papa. Well worth a visit
M.
This is a very good and interesting museum about the history of Wellington I enjoyed visiting. Admission is free (they have a couple of bins if you want to leave an optional donation (I did ) and the customer service at the front desk was excellent. I am not a huge fan of museums bit I really liked this one and is worth a visit (especially on a rainy or very windy day when weather conditions are not great in Wellington. Highly recommended.
C.
Great museum. I actually enjoy this one better than the papa. Interesting exhibits all related to Wellington. Interesting presentations, some great mini videos and interactive displays. Very well presented and always clean. Highly recommend visiting.
J.
Much better than my expectation. Full of history of Wellington and well informed videos. Personally, I liked this museum more than Te papa and Parliament tours. The exhibition, suffrage in stitches, was very interesting project.
C.
One of the places you could spend a good half or an hour if visiting nearby spots by the harbour. There are only a handful of tourists around when I was there, exactly the opposite scenario as there was at Te Papa Museum.
Most of the exhibits could be generalised as about the trade and maritime history of Wellington. Also has a small gift shop where you can purchase some souvenir items. Not really a must see place for me but if you got the time, would still be worth visiting.
M.
Every time we visit Wellington, visiting the museum is a must. First It's best to catch the lift up to level 4, the attic and work your way down the levels. There is a map that is given to you at reception if you ask. Each floor has a theme and many large and small items to find, read and explore. Lots of interactive display visual and auditory to teach you interesting facts about Wellington's history. Two of my favourites are the What we do in the shadows costumes and time displays on the ground floor. I highly recommend that if you are visiting Wellington visit the museum and it's free.
A.
Great museum! Well laid out exhibits with good signage. Definitely don't miss the top floor "attic" as it has some of the most fun stuff, and the film presentations are very well done. There are so many interesting tidbits that there's sure to be something interesting for everyone.
S.
The Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop exhibition is utterly brilliant, thought provoking and deeply moving - it needs to be permanent
G.
Beautiful place....Located in the heart of downtown Wellington. Small but exciting building. The museum displays history and old storyline of Wellington harbour.
M.
You can smell the burlap sacks, hear the gulls, and see the (mechanical) rats scuttling around in this refurbished 1892 bond store, now a museum that portrays the history of the original Māori tribes and the European settlers who arrived around 1840. Spread over four floors, the displays cover work, leisure, crime, and education in Wellington, telling stories of local life that will be of interest to visitors of all ages.
J.
We were staying in a nearby hotel so decided to visit, lovely old building on several floors filled with many interesting things.
little shop on the ground floor run by friendly staff. Old Wellington Harbour board museum on the top floor was in mint condition.
B.
You will see here things you cannot find in Te Papa, the history of New Zealand commerce, Maritime industry, Wellington business history and the like. Visit it you will not be disappointed. 😎
M.
Great little Museum with a massive variety of local exhibits and history. Lots of cool movies and interactive displays for the whole family. Much bigger on the inside than it looks on the out. The Wahine exhibit was a highlight. Highly recommend.
P.
This place seemed like your bog standard museum when I walked in.
It's not your bog standard museum, this place is amazing. Four levels that tell the story of Wellington, surprises and interesting pieces around every corner.
Free entry, with donations encouraged. The gift store at the end is great too. I wish I could have spent more time here.
J.
Even though we have been here several times, we are still finding new things to explore. So many fascinating artifacts and bits of history. The fact that Wellington is my home makes it even more interesting! I found some of the first things from the Absolutely Positively Wellington campaign today and had no idea it all started so long ago, way back in 1990!
Well done team 😇
N.
One of attractions in Wellington. If you want to enjoy it thoroughly than please spend around 2 to 3 hours inside the museum.
B.
My favorite museum in Wellington thus far. The quality of materials, unique presentation and story-telling really helps deepen appreciation for New Zealand's history. The layout was also very easily navigable and almost intimate. A must-visit when in Wellington.
A.
Imaginative displays, well labeled. Good hands on activities for children. Clean toilets. Gift shop.
R.
Great museum, well worth a visit. I started at the top and worked down. Lots of interesting things and interactive stuff for kids.
J.
Very informative and interesting. Best way to know about Wellington city. Highly recommended if your visiting the city.
J.
You can spend ages looking at all the different things displayed. There's a lot of maritime and wellington history... And even a stuffed lion...or two. It's free (although there is a donation box at the front that is worth putting some coins into) and very interesting. There's a few interactive things for the kids, and a place to watch some beautifully presented Maori myths and legends as well.
M.
It's a very interesting place, with interactive exhibits. Big fan of the attic
A.
Great museum to spend a few hours. The timeline is very informative.
I.
Wonderful place with family to learn and spend a quality time. Place is well thought. Parking was not easy to get.
A.
Lots of interesting items to look at but not a lot of overall context and pretty much zero non-Pākehā content. Buzzed through in just over an hour.
C.
Excellent place to visit, well laid out, great exibits.
J.
Great museum for all ages. Provides some detailed and interesting information and interactive components on Wellingtons history😊
T.
During the school holidays I took my daughter here. Gold coin donation, plenty of interactive exhibits and lots to see, feel and learn.
Showed my daughter the Waihene ferry sinking, watched the video and she learnt a little more than what she heard at preschool.
Very cool place, would definitely recommend to families travelling with young and teenage children. Loads to do! Make sure you check out the attic!!
W.
An understated find on the waterfront, often overlooked in the light of the National Museum around the corner. Staff are exceptionally friendly and most helpful. Allow 1-2 hours for a casual visit, maybe 3 if local history is your fare.
R.
Was really surprised. I learned loads about our history. An interactive and fun experience. Put aside a few hours. Also of note.. it's free!
W.
It's beautiful to see such a well kept museum is free for entry. Highly encourage all to make a donation at the box when you visit
I.
Enjoyed this interesting place, came away buying a well priced brass nautical compass.
C.
What a beautiful piece of history! Unfortunately we were on a time limit, so had to rush through in an hour - will be back to totally explore this amazing place ❤️
C.
Almost as good as the famous tepapa museum. Lots of helpers around, very clean, great layout, nice shops.
D.
My new favorite museum in Welly!
We've been here for 7 years or so now and this was our first visit. We have always joked about the wild claims advertised outside this museum - "voted in the top 50 museums in the world" or some such. Now I'm having to eat 7 years of my own words. This place is great!
The museum is well set out - just the right amount of information and interactive displays to keep adults and toddlers well entertained. There is a nautical theme running through the museum but it is just as much a history of Wellington.
My favourite part though is the feel of the place. It is comfortable. Lighting and wood make the place seem really cosy. I just enjoyed being in the space.
Don't be like us. Visit soon and visit often.
S.
Great place to see historic info about Wellington and the display in the attic for the movie what we do in the dark is brilliant! Well worth a look around.
H.
A wonderful place to spend a leasurely day wandering and learning all about Wellington's history and people.
D.
Very good and family friendly museum. The staff are especially friendly too.
N.
It was great museum to take kids too. Lots of to touch and play for them. I love learning the history of the port city Wellington.
The outside of the museum, there is " Capital E ". It is a play room for small children. Good thing is it is free too!
D.
Very cool. Maybe a bit of a hidden gem with Te Papa but well worth the time to visit.
T.
The top floor of the Wellington Museum is an excellent after hours venue for private group events such as Christmas parties and significant birthdays. There are plenty of fascinating displays and exhibits that become a natural talking point as you meet others at the event. Great space and fully recommend for a fantastic event.
D.
Really cool place to visit! Took us ~4 hours to cover 4 floors of a variety of exhibits related to Wellington. I highly recommend sitting in on the two Maori legends being shown on floor 2, the storyteller and characters are projected so it looks like they're walking amongst the props.
I.
Great place for young and old. Grandchildren aged 10/8/6 years thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits and inter-active displays
X.
Nice museum to visit! Admission is free and there’s lots of exhibitions to check out!
E.
Amazing. Very worth going on your next trip to welly.
D.
Such a fantastic asset to the city. Fun for kids and adults alike. Many entertaining historical and social installation pieces.
L.
Lovely museum. Great way to know more about this awesome city history.
K.
Very interesting and interactive. Three levels of varying exhibits relating to the maritime history, local history and sole quirky others of Wellington
J.
A must-visit Wellington establishment - one of the most underrated attractions in the city. I'll be coming back to spend longer here and do a more full exploration. Highly recommend this to locals as well as visitors! Also there is an excellent selection of local goods in their shop from small local businesses.
D.
A definite must see when visiting Wellington. They're open 7 days of the week and its free entry so no reason not to pay a visit!
M.
Lovely museum. Not big and full of infos but perfect for spending a couple of hours and have a good idea about the history of the city
A.
Awesome displays. Really informative, especially about Wellington history. Interactive displays too, which make you feel part of it all. Well set out. Several levels, so allow for plenty of time to explore.
I.
Most recommended if you are visiting Wellington. Great for kids.
c.
Very nice museum to learn more about the local history
A.
Just as delightful as I remember! Each floor is crammed with fascinating and meaningful exhibits and the place feels very clean and well maintained. Highly recommended, vastly superior to te papa.
G.
Lovely little museum giving insights to the city history. A special corner for the vampires film What we do in the Shadows.
J.
A small museum that have so much to look around at.. Cool!
T.
Been there twice,my son and I really enjoyed it. A lot of interesting facts with fascinating presentation. One of the best museums I have ever visited. Looking forward to return to see for new collections.
G.
Great place. As all ways.
A must visit even for locals
D.
What a nice surprise, interesting museum and well worth a visit. My kids enjoyed it too. Some fun interactive displays and it's laid out well with lots of space. There are lifts and I'd say this is push chair and wheel chair friendly. Free entry which is nice to see.
A.
Kid friendly, with lots of buttons to push and a little electric train!
C.
Really liked the mix of older and newer Wellington history. Everything is well laid out with lots to see without being cluttered. Heaps of audio to listen to around the exhibits. The building itself is historic with its own story. The staff were friendly and helpful, And of course there's a good little shop at the end.
N.
Excellent museum to see the history. Highly recommended. It takes 3 hours to finish. Admission is free.
K.
Lovely for family also. Very kind, informative, helpful staff in the reception section.
R.
Really interesting museum with exhibits covering Wellington and New Zealand history.
J.
Unique displays and amazing art work on display. The museum has a lot of cultural icons that install a joyful feeling about New Zealand. Right next to Wellingtons beautiful water front to enjoy.
D.
Probably the best museum in NZ - really well presented and awesome mixture of technology and story telling in some exhibits
J.
Fun wee museum with lots of history not seen at Te Papa. Definitely plan a trip the Wellington Museum if you have a spare couple of hours.
R.
This is a fascinating place, we enjoyed it so much! A mixture of local and national history, quirky stories, a good couple of hours of family entertainment. Seriously well presented, it's excellent.
C.
Been past on previous visits but this time we popped in as a family. What a wonderful range of historic information presented in an interesting way. Te Papa is the national museum but this one is focused just on the Wellington area and does a great job.
k.
I would like to visit again, you can easily spend your 3 hours here, nice collection
E.
An awesome place to visit. Very much preferred it over the crowded Te Papa. Never knew Wellingtom had such a rich history and the fact that they didn't gloss over the early struggles of native Maori during colonization was great to see. Lots of interactive little historic areas and mini movies to sit and watch. Will definitely revisit with my kids when we're in town again.
C.
Great little museum to get some context at...
W.
Was ok , nice
j.
Went specifically to see mini mittens exhibition which I enjoyed. Spent time going through the timeline exhibition, which is a good mix of history and social comment. Always recommend this museum to visitors.
E.
We visited with twin granddaughters of 18 months. It was wet and the double stroller was easily accommodated by the staff and we were let loose. They loved it! It started with the mouse and the cat in the entrance and they were fascinated by the ship's cabin, the huge clock, the board room, the boat and the stairs. We loved it too. This museum is a wonderful way to learn about the maritime history of Wellington, it used to be called the Museum of the City and the Sea which is a perfect description of its focus. The gift shop is worth a look too. Did I mention that the staff are wonderful?
F.
Excellent museum, friendly staff. Love the boat feel/theme, all over a lot to see and interact with. Great for little children, plenty of activities in the museum to engage them, and good ice cream and a park around the corner. The interaction is what makes the experience wonderful for my little one as she loves pushing the model train button, and just about any button she can find.
E.
This nice little museum has some really interesting exhibits, spread over several floors. Has internal stairs and a lift to all floors which makes it user-friendly. Right on Wellington's waterfront so very easy to find.
K.
Good representation of Wellington's history, especially the harbour and shipping. Ground floor was empty, pending a new exhibition.
M.
This museum was a genuine treat. Very interactive and lots of interesting stuff, not just about Wellington but also key moments in New Zealand history. Kids loved this and we'll definitely be back.
A.
Great museum, providing a lot of (if not too much) information about Wellington and its history.
The spaces are all hugely different, with a standard timeline downstairs, an area dedicated to the Wahine disaster and the maritime history upstairs, and an impressive visual presentation on the top main floor.
The Attic is a completely different experience - lots of interesting trinkets, a quirky 360° “time machine” display, and information about the architecture of the building and wider area.
I strongly recommend a visit, especially to The Attic.
G.
A comfortable and clean place to learn about Wellington. It's not as flash as Te Papa, but it's also not as busy. A good selection of exhibits. Not as interactive as a lot of museums. Nice gift shop, and it has a cool out space in the middle, if that's what you need
B.
We didn't spend a ton of time here as it is totally focused on the history of Wellington. The exhibits we're nice, but obviously very specific. Worth a visit (and it is free), but certainly not a 4+ hour experience like Te Papa.
R.
This is an excellent museum, everything we hoped it would be. A few helpful comments though; we could have done with a few more places to sit. Being elderly, we found that some of the captions were either too high or too low to be able to read everything, but made up for by the informative content.
P.
Such an interesting museum across several floors. We had only 1 hour but I could spend hours reading about the history of New Zealand. Free, small donations suggested. Highly recommended.
L.
Very nice place especially when it is rainy day..
L.
A cute place, small but interesting
D.
Absolutely brilliant place to host a Birthday party. A night at the museum that I won’t forget.
P.
Quite the museum! Definitely a must if you're in the area. Beautifully crafted exhibits to look at at a slow pace.
N.
Free entry so you can't get a better deal. Nice building with plenty of its own character and history. The exhibitions are naturally limited in space but pretty interesting, although some feel like you need a good grasp of Wellington history to really understand them. Well with a visit especially for locals.
S.
Did the ship and chip tour. We had a great time. Our guide was very informative and even though we were slow, he accommodated us and got us to the ferry with our fish and chips on time, to go and see Somes island. We will definitely go back for one of there other tours.
F.
Much larger museum than I expected. Several informative videos, including a holographic video presentation about Maori legends. Spent several hours here learning about Wellington and NZ history. This and Te Papa were my favorite museums in Wellington.
P.
Just amazing spent about 2 hours there
S.
Excellent museum with a great collection. Our 6 and 4 yr old loved it and we managed to get a full 90 minutes out of them before they wanted to go to the gift shop. Must do stop in Wellington.
o.
Great place to take the kids and even adults. mostly maritime and things about wellington you might not of known. Very 😎
AND ITS FREE PEOPLE!!!
G.
Enjoyed reading about the history and seeing memorabillia
J.
The smaller cousin of Te Papa museum. We took the kids here and they had a great time running around. The lions in the attic were a big hit and well worth the visit. Lots of interactive things to do for kids.
B.
A great building in its self, well renovated, and full of Wellington history, physical and verbal, extremely well done. In my opinion a far better representation of Wellington through the years than Te Papa if that's what your after.
S.
A great little Museum showcasing the development of the city from when it was founded by the Company.
Has some interesting interactive spaces to interest the kids.
L.
Awesome museum! So much cool stuff to view, the best museum in Wellington and usually not as crowded as Te Papa. Video documenting the Wahine Disaster is particularly poignant and well presented.
W.
A charming smaller museum. Interesting insights into Wellington's history. Many fascinating artifacts. Moving video documentary of Wahine ferry tragedy. Delightful non-digital holograms of some Maori legends; clearly voiced.
C.
The Wellington museum is well located near the water front. Close to the main street, it's easy to get there. There are multiple indications all around town showing you to this place.
Small yet really interesting, the different floors are well organized. They show you different types of arts/memories.
Great place for kids, families or adults. There is a coat/back check available.
J.
This is a very well decorated and organized museum to learn the history of Wellington. Museum employees were very friendly. Entrance is free, but remember to donation as the money will be used to maintain the museum.
P.
This was a quaint museum to explore with free entry. Staff at front counter, very helpful and knowledgeable with advice.
Several levals, and they suggest you start at top in Attic area and work your way down.
The entire building has been carefully renovated and adds to the charm of the displays. There were quiet a few displays and very informative too.
I.
A brilliant adventure to visit here, great resources for history lovers, but also great to take friends and family around. It has something for everyone!
A.
Super friendly staff that will do whatever it takes to help you out.
We ended up using the Wellington Museum to showcase an event, the event took place in the boardroom which was the perfect space for us.
We had a section at the back where we could video and use audio equipment, the sound quality was great and the space very large for what we needed.
WiFi was also great which was good for us as we needed a reliable connection for live streaming.
A.
Every place with free entry is worth visiting. Nice and calming experience 👍
M.
An absolutely amazing and interactive museum. Very educational for adults and children. They successfully created a truly immersive experience, full of cool facts and interesting information. Nothing like the boring museums you usually see nowadays. I actually really loved this place. It is my favourite in the wellington region. It's a must go for any tourist. It's free.
M.
While Te Papa gets all the publicity and glory, the Museum of Wellington is also outstanding. Focusing on the settlement and history of Wellington it is well laid out and chock full of interesting exhibits and information. The 100 years exhibition on the ground floor is fantastic and as you go up it just gets better.
H.
Fantastic museum with great informative exhibits focused on Wellington and maritime history. Over 4 levels of a gorgeous historic building.
C.
Very cool free museum. Staff were lovely and offered to put our heavy backpacks behind the counter while we looked around. The highlight was probably the journey through time exhibition. Thoroughly enjoyed it :)
D.
Had a look around here on a cool blustery morning and was not disappointed. I love the fact that many museums are entry by donation. This makes it accessible to many more people and families as evidenced by the number people looking round and learning. Very well presented exhibits and learnt loads about the area.
S.
Excellent museum to learn about the history not only of Wellington but also New Zealand on the whole. It was a perfect way to spend a wet and windy day in Wellington.
Free entry with a nice sized gift shop and good accessibility.
C.
Eclectic collection showcasing the history of Wellington. My highlight is the Attic where there is a bigger focus on contemporary pop culture.
B.

M.
Wonderful museum and very interactive! Their approach is very simple, of it cannot be touched, it will be behind glass, otherwise you can touch, play and experiment with the items exhibited.
Great place for kids
O.
Absolutely splendid visit to the well varied and informative museum, genuinely wasn't expecting such a brilliant blend of information between NZ events, Natural History, Kiwi culture, US culture, British culture, and Maori culture, showing the country's evolution and how it got to where it is today, absolute 10/10!
T.
We did the ship and chip tour, a glimpse of the fabulous Wellington museum with a great guide then small fish and chips, don't rely on this alone for lunch. Ate on the boat to somes island, then several hours self guided tour of the island. Well worth it.
C.
Wonderfully surprise outing for the family. Went for a temporary collection. But spent much more time on the permanent stuff. Interesting for adults, interactive for kids. The Attic is a thougtful and engaging space. The Marine artefacts are awesome. Will need to revisit for the Maori section. If anyone wants to get to grips with how our city has grown, this place is a must-see.
P.
The exhibit at start of the museum, ie the old port, was the best part for me. I understand the Wellington focus due to Te Papa being close by. Worth a visit and it is free although a small donation is suggested but not mandatory. I learnt something and some things I thought I knew were corrected. Good to know what are urban myths and what is fact. I loved the story about the dog adopted by all in the 1930s. That is gold.
S.
Great and includes costumes from what we do in the shadows
E.
Extremely fun little museum with lots to see. This is a spot that is well worth spending a few hours exploring. Not to be missed even though the larger Te Papa museum is just around the harbour. It still felt worthwhile and fun after already visiting the other museums.
R.
Great if you wanna learn about early Wellington history. A lot of trade and nautical stuff in here. It's nice if your a local or really wanna learn about well itself, but I found there are better museums and/or art galleries near by.
Nice post cards though. Deffo worth a visit just to see but missing a certain WOW factor.
A.
With 2 granddaughters 13 and 15 who where so interested in the displays. The wahine film was our time. Brought back lots of memories. Great place..
M.
Really had a great time knowing Wellington's story and its people's contribution to the country and to the world.
R.
Plenty to see, hands on exhibits for kids and a very moving Wahine short film. Well worth a visit.
T.
What an interesting museum! And a great, well-organised potted history of Wellington too. Hopefully we'll have more time to spare there next time
J.
Highly recommend to book or join the Ship ‘n Chips tour that starts at 11am everyday. It’s great value at $49 with a 50 min guided tour in the Museum and a ferry that brings you to Somme’s Island and back, including takeaway Fish n chips arranged by the museum. The museum is quite big @ 3 stories high So it would be good to go earlier to have your own walk as the 1 hour tour by them is not sufficient to see everything although it’s great to have a guide.
Somme’s Island was a good 3 hours walk around leisurely.
You may not be able to book from their website but you can just call or show up to join the tour, when we were here there was just 2 of us making it a private tour!
Definitely a hidden gem for seeing Wellington and a great way to spend the day other than seeing the city.
A.
Amazing museum, so much to see, do and learn, free entry, so give a donation because it's worth it. Endless nooks and crannies to discover. Great for short or long visits.
D.
A nice relaxing place to learn the history of Wellington. Make sure you check out all the floors
D.
It was a typically cold Wellington day and we had nothing to do but aimlessly wander around the admittedly completely bloody delightful central city area and stumbled across this little museum. We stepped in the door to be met by someone to tell us it was a free attraction although she'd love a donation. So we stuffed $10 in the thing and went for a look. It was a most diverting 45 minutes. Well worth the time and not only because we were out of the cold wind for a bit. We learned some things, saw some things and even got to touch some things. Good stuff. I think we enjoyed it more than Te Papa. Go for a look yourself. 5 stars!
D.
Great for kids. Exhibits really displayed well.
R.
Great venue for a get together. Funky, interesting, quite spacious and ready to host all kind of events ... Linke a 50th in this case. Highly recommended.
V.
Great for school kids. Half of the reading material in this place can go online. Museum should have more displays and less reading material. Parking is a problem. Location is not so good for a museum, it should be bit far from CBD / crowded area.
C.
An amazing experience albeit being smaller than The Papa. It has plenty to offer especially for a younger audience. My favourite levels were those that allowed for one to vote for an alternate story or name to some things and had a short hologram describing a certain legend involving Maui, and my second most favourite level was the level describing the origins of Wellington.
T.
The rat is nice but all the fun stuff like buttons to press are gone. Sad.
R.
It was a treasure trove of little surprises all the way through. I really enjoyed the Maori legends story telling hologram, or whatever it was.
M.
One of the wonderful museums in Wellington well organised exhibits in timeline manner and mainly covers the marine evolution of the Wellington. However it covers the Wellington history in general and also detailed the sunk ship back in 1930s.
Entry is free and donations are accessible which jab quit reasonable request.
If this post helpful please do like it

Walked there. Spent 3 hours in there. Amazing good stories about Wellington. So much to see and read. Make a donation. Loved visiting the museum.
E.
A great small museum featuring Wellington's history, rather than overall NZ that Te Papa features. The attic is an awesome little exhibition space too.
J.
It is easy to access and has unique floors of exhibits. My personal favourite was the corner dedicated to the famous Kirkcaldie & Stains. Its absolutely amazing to see the train model moving too
R.
Lovely museum. Must be hard to compete with Te Papa but there is information of interest here too. The Wahine tragedy was interesting. V sad.
S.
A pretty cool little museum tucked away on the Wellington waterfront.
Some really interesting instillations and exhibitions, especially around NZ music month. The museum also has a really well done and respectful section on the Wahine disaster.
A.
Everything was beautiful and I could tell the Museum takes great care of everything! Expect a lot of reading and most exhibitions are interactive so it's fantastic for the kids too.
B.
We used one of their spaces for a team workshop. It's a fantastic venue to get out if the office - loads of character in the building itself, and walking through the exhibition area to get to the room is a great way to switch gear
C.
Great little museum, one if my daughter's favourite places to visit in Wellington
J.
A three dimensional history of Wellington unfolds as you walk through.
Beautifully presented, displayed, and told through artifacts, and digital media. Fantastic for all age groups. Highly recommend a visit.
J.
A lovely musuem well presented. Lots of on teeing local history. Recommend the tour which includes a coffee and a treat at the end for those on a time budget not to be missed if history is your thing.
F.
This is such an interesting, informative and visually well presented place. I mainly went to see the Wahine video. I like that it is in a darkened area and it impacts with the story. I would love to hear more of the other people stories around this tragedy which used to be included. Great museum. Last visited when it was City to Sea many years ago.
M.
Wellington Museum resides in the historic Bond Store, an 1892 heritage building on the waterfront which was previously a cargo and shipping goods warehouse. True to its iconic premises, the museum is centred around the histories and stories of the wider Wellington region, from its maritime tales to the natural disasters that made their mark on the wider community.
D.
Best place to learn about Wellington history in particular, and a significant amount of New Zealand history, as well. Many exciting and interactive exhibits. Plan on spending some time here (at least an hour or two).
R.
Great spot if you're interested in the history of Wellington and history in general
J.
Cited as one of the top 50 little museums in the world, it's newly opened attic space combines the historical and the quirky . Exploring Wellington's own stories its worth combining a visit here with bigger brother Te Papa just 10min walk away
O.
Interactive and fun! So much information delivered really well, so well that my kids went 2 hours and were sad that we had to leave! Better than Te Papa!
A.
Exceeded my expectations. Free museum. Learnt lots of facts. Have been here numerous times and stayed here a few hours each time. Great to learn about the history of the Wahine to New Zealand’s history throughout the decades. Good idea to include this on your family day out.
G.
This is a must see museum. My kids love coming here and we love the seasonal events they have. During summer they have lots of events going on. Such a beautiful place.
P.
Great museum showing informative points of NZ history. Best part is that it's totally free, so a nice spot to visit for any tourist
M.
If you must know, Coastguard Wellington had it's 50th Birthday Bash on the top floor, hence my recent visit. Have been there on other occasions over the years though.
It started off as Wellington Maritime Museum and evolved into what it is today; a local museum with a strong maritime flavour.
D.
The museum is quite nice and cozy. To my bad there were a school class in there with me, so it was a little loud. The exhibition is nice presented but way too much to read.
I.
Very nice museum with many interesting facts about wellington
R.
A good insight into the history of the city.
Well worth a visit with a good variety of bite size exhibits and not too much information overload.
Plenty of hands-on exhibits for children to enjoy.
M.
This is possibly Wellington's best kept secret. With a comprehensive timeline through the City's history from its humble beginnings until today it would be my go to place for any visitor wanting a solid and interesting view of the origins and growth of New Zealand's unique little Capital.
H.
The under-rated little brother of Te Papa, located next to Frank Kitts Park and the TSB Arena, the Wellington Museum of City and Sea is definitely worth checking out. The history displayed in the interactive exhibits within the elegant building is both educational and fun for all the family. Four floors of displays, including the story of the Wahine Disaster and an amazing hologram show of local Maori legends. Entry is free, but they could charge and it would still be worth it. Highly recommended.
A.
Wonderful., The exhibits were well done on all levels. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 hours so interesting. Thanks Allison & Marty Tauranga
C.
It's small compared to Te Papa but we love it more - great interactive exhibits that both kids and adults will enjoy. Definatey recommend a visit!
M.
Hidden Gem - Free museum. We thought there would not be much to it, but you could easily spend hours here. Great rainy day activity. 3D hologram in the Attic area very impressive.
C.
A great wee museum. Good flow and the museum is a nice time capsule of not just Wellington but also NZ
M.
Free, fun and nicely made they had nixi tubes in there awsome ^^
J.
Very well presented and maintained in one of Wellington so iconic buildings. For a non Wellingtonian it was interesting to learn of the history associated with this vibrant city.
M.
A plumbago-coloured museum full of NZ nautical history, wonderful artefacts and records, located centrally on the Wellington Waterfront and a popular, tourist destination. It is very close to the Central Station and bus hub in Bunny Street should you choose to come by train/bus from the north.
B.
Nice small museum about Wellington's harbour and sailing history. It can be visited in half an hour. It has a really nice gift show as well
E.
It's a must-see for visitors to Wellington. And even though it's relatively small it is absolutely packed with interesting bits of history of the local area and NZ as a whole.
Do not think you can run through this in an hour or two and do it any justice.
X.
Very informative and friendly really enjoyed the displays and the interactive displays as well but the fact that's it's a donation gold coin for entry makes it really exsessible for everyone just a awesome Museum.
B.
Entry to the museum is free, but they take donations to support the museum.
Nice place that tells the story of Wellington on a very lifely way. Definitely worth a visit.
P.
Amazing stories about Wellington. History for last century. Experience of day life. Highlights from history. Time travel machine is awesome. Don't forget the attic exhibit! And it's for free. I think it gives you more than e.g Weta Cave which is with admission. Good to donate a little to box before exit.
M.
Superb place, had so many different and most importantly interactive exhibitions. Absolutely loved it!! Definitely a must to see if you are in Wellington
L.
Great place to learn about the past of Wellington.
J.
Very enjoyable, well organised and easy wheel chair/pram access access via a lift, enjoyed the attic time machine, close to the east west ferry for a trip to Days Bay across the Wellington harbour as an added bonus
A.
Neat museum central location with good lift access and layout throughout, it's mainly themed on Wellington local history, maratine, and other neat things. Free entry would recommend.
R.
Very well presented. Maybe few more comfy seats for older folk to rest on.
Very interesting 1900 onwards display.
H.
Definitely recommend this amazing museum, it's such a great experience with interesting New Zealand themes, wild life, early settlers and more. Highly recommend a visit
F.
What a superb museum! Lots of interactive displays but the highlight was the storytelling, complete with holograms. Magical!
P.
It's a good place to meet something about Wellington's and New Zealand's culture, and It's free!
D.
Great experience for free
J.
I was privileged to be educated by "Wiremu" last Friday. What a delightful, respectful and knowledgable young man. Thankyou for making my visit so enjoyable and making sure my mobility issues were catered for. I booked the fish n chip tour and from beginning to end Wiremu looked after me. The meal was delicious and my trip to Matiu Island a great experience and end to a beautiful day. If you get to the Arena carpark before 10 you only have to pay $25 for the whole day. I walked back to my car about 4:30 (about 2 mins from the museum). Big thanks to Wiremu. You deserve a medal!!!
H.
Very nice place it's nice to know where my tax money is gone I think it's time to charge tourists entry to this great Museum as they are thousands of them and the museum could make a few thousand dollars a day plus it is basic common sense lovely place
L.
Really interesting and poignant footage and story of the Wahine ferry disaster in one section of the museum
V.
Complete fun for kids and adults alike. Plenty of activities planned each day to engage children.
P.
Free and lovely museum presenting the story of wellington (city and sea). Interesting exhibitions with clear explanations. 2h or 3h are sufficient. Really different from Te Papa but a must see !
J.
A decent little (compared with other places) to visit. Provides a good insight into the past of Wellington. Very well set out and presented.
V.
Lovely exhibitions, particularly the Mittens one. Very child friendly 🐈
Helpful staff. Great shop!
J.
The suffrage exhibition was a wonderful tribute to the courage of the women of New Zealand who signed the petition. Beautiful work and very moving
F.
I didn't expected that much from a museum that you can visit for free but I've got surprised after I entered the museum. You can learn a lot about the history of Wellington and they have a nice way to present it.
A.
A great place that I didnt know existed, amazing wooden building with a great selection of items inside. The time machine was great.
S.
One of the most interesting museums in the country. Interactive displays, local history special events well worth spending an afternoon wandering around.
K.
Friendly and helpful staff. You can leave your belongings safely at the desk while you take a tour. Interesting interactive displays.
G.
A great gem of a museum. Smallish but packed with interesting stuff. Free entry. Well worth an hour or so of your time.
M.
Free/suggested donation of $2. Open everyday between 10am & 5pm. Great museum that shows the history of Wellington. I like the ground floor exhibitions where they have hands on interactive didplays that highlight events through the years in Wellington. Level 2 has interactive marine stuff with a short film of the Wahine disaster. Level 3 has a Maori theme & a brilliant holographic theatre. The attic has a range of things that are generally a hands on look arranged by topic.
A.
Amazing museum, so much to see, do and learn, free entry, so give a donation because it's worth it. Endless nooks and crannies to discover. Great for short or long visits.

Incredible history here. Highly recommended to all visitors to this beautiful city, and locals as well. Easy walking distance from the city and heaps of interesting things for kids as well.
C.
An amazing experience albeit being smaller than The Papa. It has plenty to offer especially for a younger audience. My favourite levels were those that allowed for one to vote for an alternate story or name to some things and had a short …
A.
Really interesting interactive exhibits. Honestly found it more interesting than Te papa (excluding their special exhibits).
L.
Very interesting. Wahine display was very interesting and informative

Free entry, lots of information, beautiful building. Excellent thing to do on a rainy day. Fun surprise for vampire lovers.
K.
Great museum. Well laid out with interesting and thought-provoking exhibits.
P.
Very nice museum with good use of innovative video displays. Possibly too much reading to be done in the main 'timeline' area which is possibly not too good for kids.
M.
A fantastic place to wander around in afternoon, the kids love it as well. And the new Attic will feed your "steampunk" sensibilities.
hint: stay out of the captains cabin, icky people 'do things' in there.
G.
Lots of hands-on things for kids, but the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk scared our toddler.
C.
Really engaging exhibits, not just your standard class cabinets with lots of dry text to read.. Could have easily spent more time here .. Well worth a visit
C.

Great museum to visit and spend 90 min at. Free entrance and a lovely souvenir shop inside.
