Reviews of Pounamu Pathway - Museum of Kawatiri
a lot of reading to find our more about the history of mining on the coast. some really interesting machinery on display, but all in all a bit disappointed by lack of exhibits.
the video is fascinating and worth a watch.
The counter staff were really amazing and helpful however. knowledgeable, friendly and patient.
if there was a way to give them an independent five star review I would totally be doing that.
What a great museum! Full of great exhibits and loads of information about the rich mining history on the west coast. There is a mine exhibit you can go into and watch a neat video showing the old mine operations. We spend about an hour here but you could spend a bit longer if you read everything. Adults $10, children under 5 are free. If you are visiting Westport make sure you pop in here and brush up on the history.
Very helpful staff, with good advice re visit to the Denniston mine. Also with suggestions about getting the most out of our visit to Westport.
Amazing place, amazing history of West Coast. You have to stop by. Take 50c coin with you to run a sand pump, it only takes 50c coins
Very welcoming, & very informative and helpful staff. A great museum to visit, actually a must visit. Thanks guys 👍
Nicely set out display showing many aspects of the history of Westport and the wider Buller region. The "coal mine" and Denniston Incline exhibits were especially good. Many references to the (now closed & demolished) Holcum Cement factory in the present tense need to be updated.
$10 entry. Very informative. It's about coal mining on the west coast. If that's not your thing it's not for you.
Great museum. Very informative and a very enthusiastic welcome
Kids enjoyed learning and being hands on with the displays. Smaller than I remember as a child, but the experience well worth the small admission fee. If your in wesport go check it out. History can be fun
An alright place to spend half an hour. An interesting look at the history of coal mining on the West Coast.
There's a lack of narrative and direction in the display, you don't really know where to start or in what order to look at the exhibits. In addition there's nothing really on the future of coal or it's place in a low-emission future.
Bit small for a museum but half price if you go 30 mins before closing
Excellent museum, so well set out and the various DVDs were excellent. I-site staff were very helpful and friendly. Gift shop was well stocked w reasonably priced items for everyone.
Wow!! This museum had a lot of variety and made learning about Westport fun. I usually don’t like
Museums but this one grabbed my attention as soon as I walked through the door. I learned a lot about Westport and was surprised to read about a shared link to my family home country of Samoa. Take 50 cent pieces with you to see the dredge pistons in action and don’t forget to ring the bells!
Definetly worth a visit. It is being up graded/added to soon.
Very good place to visit and most knowledgeable on what happened to the coal miner's.
Full respect to the workers and their families over the years in scratching out a hard living amongst the dirt. Was a tough life for all. Thanks to the museum for bringing this to life, and giving us an opportunity to understand.
Interesting museum. Good history of coal mining
Great information. You need to go. Loved it.
Awesome Museum, allow plenty of time
Interesting, but a bit expensive for what amounts essentially to a one room display. Not great for younger kids as there is a lot of reading (about stuff most kids aren't that into if we are honest). Well laid out, informative and well displayed.
Very nice for a small museum
Awesome look back at an industry that helped propel the industrial era. Without coal we simply wouldn't be where we are now. And the West Coast had a significant part to play in that. And still does.
its a good place but there's to much coal
Very cool, loved learning the history of the area. The video in the 'mine' section at the back was really interesting!
Quite informative on the coal industry and the growth of the area. Enjoyed the displays and the coal mine experience.
Enjoyed it. More focused on Denniston. Living was certainly harsh in those days. Great videos playing and telling the history.
Very educational place. This museum helps you to understand Westport region. Small but informative Museum.
The students enjoyed dressing up and ringing the bells.
Lots of good stories about early years and great photos.
Really great interactive displays. Helpful staff
. I would highly recommend when visiting Westport
Very informative museum about the history of the West Coast coal-mining industry. Well displayed and documented. Worth every cent of the entry price of $10.
So disappointed not to see the Morley Brewery exhibit..which was part of the previous collection. Important parts of Westport history need to be represented
The museum is really well done with cool pictures and heaps of interesting information. It is worth a visit if you are visiting Westport
So informative. Loved going into the made up coalminers pit. Recommend. Lovely girl on the front desk
Look Great
Definitely recommend spending a good amount of time here. Super informative and really well done.
Amazing view into a beautiful piece of history. Ended up going back the next day to have another look. A must visit for anyone interested in the mining history of the West Coast.
A small fee gives you a great history of the area. The displays are well thought out and the video histories excellent.
Awesome my father’s family we’re coal miners in Denniston brought back memories for me
Lovely place to visit. Lots to read and a couple of interesting videos. Take a 50 cent find to insert to watch the dredger machine work.
Well worth a visit, well setup, the kids loved it and very friendly helpful staff. Reasonably priced and would happily go back
Great display and good information for all people.
Most interesting place , makes one realise what the earlier miners had to endure before Health and safety kicked in
Interesting history, but admission fee is pretty high unfortunately. 10$ per adult
Very informative.
Excellent a must see if you are visiting the Westport area.
A bit expensive at $10 for adults & $2 for children but very interesting and very detailed It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Learnt some very interesting past histories about the area.
Really good museum, excellently presented
The information and set up was nice. The adult admission fee was a little pricey....kids liked it none the less..
Informative, an essential must see of bygone days in New Zealand.
Amazing place to visit. So much to see and learn the history of the area.
A fascinating look in Coast history. Beautifully done. Go Westport.
Wonderfully set out. Glad we visited
Outstanding display. Oozing history on the once mighty WC
Loads of bits and pieces to look at. The "underground" display needs a little bit more light in there as some of the oldies had difficulty seeing/reading things.
Great place to visit
Interesting place. Kind of steep entry fee
Good visit. Abit pricey but I something to do! I learnt quite alot!
Awesome thanks
Wonderful and insightful to learn about the history of our nations coal town.
Great stories about the coast. No mention of global warming though.
a museum that looks back in the history of coal mining and the west coast people
Just such a well set out museum

Great
It was great
Interesting museum
Check out this place before a visit to Denniston. (Or after)
Highly recommended.
Great place to get some history and insight into Westport and Denniston before checking them out in-person. It is pretty text-heavy so probably not one for the kids. The ladies working the front desk are fabulous too!
(Translated) Interesting, especially the films. Lots of great exhibits.
(Original)
Interessant, vor allem die Filme. Viele große Exponate.
