Reviews of Denniston Coalmining Historic Area
W.
Amazing free place to learn about historical coal mining and the long gone town of denniston. The whole place is so interesting to explore. Great information signs and exhibits. The loop walk is worth doing and doesn't take long, but give yourself an hour or two to fully explore the site. There's a cool video you can also watch online about the incline, the qr code link to the video is at the viewpoint to the incline. I loved my visit here and recommend it to anyone. You also get an amazing view as it is on a mountain. Be careful driving up as there are a lot of bends and the road is narrow and steep. Well worth the trip!
J.
Had no idea what to expect when we visited Denniston so what we found exceeded expectations. Lots of information and things to see regarding coalmining on the early 1900s. The views were truly amazing. Take warm clothing though...just in case.
M.
A glimpse back into not only New Zealands mining history but also shows what hard work and tenacity combined with common sense and intelligence can achieve.
You stand on the staging platform and look at what the pioneers built and wonder why we now import coal from Indonesia.
N.
This place is so much fun!! The great thing is, it's all a self-tour set up, so you could take 20 min or 3 hours (like we did). They have the main area of Denniston that has derailed signs at the entrance of all the mining activity, then you can walk around that area and read more really detailed and interesting signs. They have anecdotes from the era as well as statistics and history etc. In addition, there is just a really good view of the valley and west coast. Picnic tables and flushing toilets up there. If you're really keen, you can jump back in the car and drive to the settlements further on (Coal Brookdale, Burnett's Face). They have lovely walks that follow a creek where the miners would walk to and from work. You can see the openings of the mines (they are blocked off of course, you can't get in). I recommend bringing a torch to shine in if you ant to check it out.
Super fun!! Highly recommend.
N.
An amazing experience. It's like once they finished work in 1967 and tore down the buildings and the rails that everything else was left as is.
C.
Eerie experience but I loved it. Well worth a visit
W.
Great views. Information is interesting.
M.
They were hard workers back then. Just the achievement of extraction and then transporting down from the Plateau is mind blowing.
S.
One of the greatest defeats in engineering. Amazing history and the location was beyond my expectations. Heard abut this place when I was young, and said "one day I am going to visit The Denniston, and I DID!!!
E.
So interesting to learn how coal was mined and moved , short loop walk, dogs allowed.
L.
Just a ruin. Thought it would be very atmospheric after reading the book, the 'Denniston Rose', but the day was fine and sunny and couldn't feel any of the history here. Very accessible with good road up to the mine site.
L.
Great place to visit worth driving up to it,at least spend half day looking around, beautiful views .
W.
Great views. Information is interesting.
K.
Epic historic site. Best 2nd date of my life! 100% worth the visit for so many reasons, the view is only one of them.
R.
Accessible by road today this once very difficult to get to mining town is a fascinating look at earliest engineering and mining in NZ, the town has gone, no more mining but plenty of information of life and drama of living on the plateau plus spectacular views will greet you up there.
S.
Great history, well maintained and lots of interesting boards detailing events. Well worth the drive up the hill ( on a nice day ! )
L.
A great place to visit so much history to look at. The road is sealed all the way and the views are just the best
L.
Amazing history. Very little remains of the town that used to be here but there is enough left to give an impression of what it used to be like. The information boards have stories from the townsfolk about their lives from that time both work and play and talk about the history of how the mines created solutions like developing the Incline considered the 8th Wonder.
Children may not appreciate the significance of what they are seeing but the older folk sure will.
An absolute must see if in the area especially if you've read Denniston Rose which brings to life this area and the people who lived here.
I.
Well worth a small detour and the drive to the plateau. The view is spectacular. Fascinating walk around the brakehead and plenty of info on the area's history. A must-do if you're in Westport.
T.
A video or animation would be very good, that show how this pretty impressive piece of engineering worked, it get a bit too abstract to read about it. Very interesting and a bit refreshing to realise that we are no longer sacrificing workers of all ages like they used to, some people paid a horrible price for someone else to cash in!
The climb to get up here is quite long and steep, especially for a motorhome, so make sure you have enough fuel to get up and down to Westport which is the closest fuel station.
L.
Well done for a fantastic (free) experience! Beautiful information boards and well restored aspects of the 8th wonder of the world - the Denniston Incline. Hats off to the early pioneers and engineers. Nice clean toilets and picnic tables in the car park to allow you to stay and enjoy the view.
K.
If your a fan of derelict looking places and history this place is worth a stop. Information points are scattered around with the history of the coal mines. The view is incredible and all the broken/destroyed mining equipment adds to a rather unique experience.
A.
It's a real pity that the Mine Experience has been closed down. This tourism venture really brought the Denniston area alive. Despite that, it's an amazing place and interesting to wander around and imagine the experience of the miners who worked, lived and died there.
C.
Great scenery with a lot of minig history. Fantastic drive up the mountain. A must visit.
K.
Coal miners and their families have a pretty tough life. The incline at the Denniston Plateau may well have been the world's first roller coaster - to get coal, people and goods up and down the mountain. Terrifying for good reason...
E.
A good walking around makes you appreciate the hard work of our past history. Hats of to these brave men and women who began Denniston town.
a.
Beautiful place had a great time
B.
Fascinating trip back in time. Heaps of information around the place and relics everywhere. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours here at the very least.
B.
What an amazing place to visit. It is hard to believe that people lived and work right there. The women wore dresses and hats and the kids worked also in the mines.
D.
Lovely place to visit. Gives you a a perspective of the sheer determination shown by the Denniston Miners to earn a living and to raise their family's.
f.
Cool place to visit with tremendous amount of info on geology, engineering and history of the local people
I.

An interesting place to visit after driving on half hour of hilly roads, drive slow n stay safe.

Heaps of history at Denniston, need a half day at least to explore. Bush walks 🚶♀️

Good bit of NZ history. The view was outstanding
J.
Interesting, with lots of pictures and info to bring the area back to life.
C.
Great place to visit especially after reading The Denniston Rose.
J.
very interesting places to view
alloy of history
H.
Found some names carved into a big rock from 1940
JJ Jacob Jones who was the sheriff I believe
Marion
The rock was near the closed off area
H.
We have so much history and some a wee bit hidden. Well worth a good half day excursion.
M.
If you love mining or something about history, this is the place for you! It is like an open air museum, but then for free.
R.
A thoughtful collection of information panels about life and mining on the Denniston plateau. Unfortunately raining, windy & cold so we didn’t visit the old workings.
R.
Great place to wander around and look at some very interesting things and the views are amazing.
S.
The debris and the remains of the once thriving community at the Denniston Plateau tells a story of resilience at 600m windswept plateau above the coast.
One can imagine a very dangerous workplace and a cutting edge technology in Pully systems to boot.
The Denisston operation mined 10million tonnes of the black stuff during its operation from 1879 to 1967. Health and Safety I think we're alive and well then but in the backburner so to speak. It is more bureaucratic now with the absence of "resilience"
It is a palpable experience but you have to be there to touch it; almost spiritual..!!
D.
A really nice area with a lot of old great photos that help you to understand how was the life there when the mine was still open.
J.
Spent a couple of hours in this amazing place. Having read Jenny Patrick's books was keen to visit. Well done to doc and everyone involved. Very informative. Did help to have a lovely sunny day!!!
W.
Amazingly restored allowing folk today to get a feel of how it was back in the day
A.
Fascinating history. We don't know how lucky we are🙂
M.
This place is definitely worth a visit.
A.
Loved it. The history, what's left is so good. Well worth a look and read about it. Don't climb the fences because doc might catch you 🙄
T.
Fantastic place to visit.. So much history
P.
Fascinating history of coal mining.
R.
Awesome! What an incredible history in this place. And the views! We were lucky enough to see it in awesome weather and could see for miles! Going home to read the book the Denniston Rose !
F.
This is well worth a visit allow some time to explore
R.
Got to sit in my Nanas rocking chair at the museum!!!! Knowledgeable, friendly guy running it was very helpful answering questions. Denniston scenery and historical sites we fantastic. A great day
M.
Fantastic historical coal mine and awesome views
P.
Such a shame a lot has been destroyed. A big fire went through some years ago, fanned by wind and fueled by all the coal and coal dust. The town was abandoned in 1967 after the road to Westport was completed but coal continued to be mined from nearby until 1995.
M.
One of my favourite places in New Zealand.
L.
Great, lots of information boards. Amazing a whole town existed there. Well worth the drive up the hill even in the misty rain.
S.
We had a great day to go there so the view was spectacular. Really enjoyed our time there. Very interesting.
P.
Would have loved to have spent a bit more time here but the weather was challenging. Well worth the drive though.
Recommend.
R.
Lots of reading.
And great walks
Worth your while.
M.
Awesome place loads of history here
P.
We visited the Denniston site this afternoon. We had a lovely clear day and the views were outstanding. You can see forever from up here. The information panels tell the story very well and overall the site is pretty good for a remote place way up here in the hills on the West Coast. You go wish more was preserved over the years but given it wasn't, the way it's presented is very good. The drive up the winding road to get here is also worth noting as you get the views as you drive up. The road us fully sealed so no worries getting up here. Well worth the drive if you live a great view or you love history.
A.
Orsome history of coal mining back in the day🖒😊
B.
Well worth the return visit after 40 years!! Things have certainly changed - well set out but make sure you have a fine clear day to appreciate the views
N.
Very interesting place to visit. Read the information boards about Denniston coal mining history and its people and Denniston it self. Also a great views over looking Westport and the Tasman sea.
P.
We both loved enjoyed the drive around the top part, it has Bush and green most off its is covered. Then went down to the town ship was the photos will show you
R.
Awesome piece of history, lots of info
R.
Cool place to look around, on clear day fantastic views right along coast line informative posters around area.worth a look
c.
This is a must see place to visit when you are in Westport. The drive up there and back down is worth it by itself. At 524 meters high the view is fantastic.
This is very well sign posted with loads of information.
S.
Absolutely amazing. Spent about 3 hours wandering around the place. Will be going back. The displays are great. Well worth it.
A.
NZ West Coast pioneering history.
D.
Excellent description of the area, I learnt so much.
B.
I really enjoyed our visit here. Informative signage and photographs to supplement the relics showing the amazing engineering feats to extract coal from this area. Beautiful views of the coastline.
M.
Make sure you walk down the lower track to see the arched brick bridge
L.
Free, not too far from Westport, with ample parking and toilets. Vast amount of well-written and fascinating historical information. Really broad scope, allowing visitors to wander from section to section, reading personal and community history of the site. Extremely worthwhile.
N.
wow step back in time. long drive up holl but work it.
R.
Awesome history, clever presentation (thought the transparencies down by the incline top were great) and stunning views if the weather allows. I cycled up (the road) from Westport and was a great day ride.
C.
Fourth time here and it always surprises.
A.
Really great insight into NZ history
L.
A "MUST SEE!!!" Amazing feat of Engineering, one of the Engineering Wonders of the World. Extremely well presented, definitely worth the effort. Beautiful coastal views from the top. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍👍👍👍
R.
Great, well worth the trip up.
C.
Great place to walk around and see. Good idea to go to Coal Museum in Westport first to get really good overview of Denniston and it's story
S.
As a historic site, it was interesting as there were numerous signs and pictures that put the current landscape into context, though there was little restoration of the mining equipment. Well worth the the long climbing drive to get there for the view alone.
C.
Lovely historic area such hard working people Enjoyed walking the tracks & reading the information boards. Appreciate living in this era.
C.
Freezing and fine and beautiful and interesting. They were so tough, awesome read and look.
P.
we drove up here for a view of Westport and surrounds but what we found was a very informative display of how the Denniston mine worked as well as old relics. The drive up here is well worth your time and effort as there is also a museum to visit and some tracks to walk and there are some wagons still up there.
N.
Denniston is a place you have to visit whenever your on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. It has so much history and just amazing. Follow the signs and walk through some of New Zealands Coal Mining history. Highly recommend.
S.
Take a picnic and spend some time here, a lot to see up there.
N.
A little dilapidated and scary when walking close to some of the edges, make sure young children are supervised and follow guidelines set by DOC. Cool information boards and great views - could be better run and up keep.
D.
Great place to visit. Great history and can overnight in self contained motorhome. Fab view to wake-up to!
M.
A definite must visit. Loved it. So much information
S.
Amazing engineering feat. Incredible views. New information displays. Easy to drive to, new walk ways. You can drive down narrow road to top of bank.
D.
Well worth going to have a look.
C.
Visited on a sunny day so had fantastic panoramic views, walked all around the mine area, lots of interesting information boards and photos, the mine experience has closed but still really worthwhile visiting, a sealed road from the start to the top of the mountain.
M.
Well worth the drive on a great sealed road..Spent 3 hours admiring the views.
M.
The Denniston Plateau has a fascinating industrial history. there are an excellent series of information boards and historic photos to help you understand how it used to be. plus a nice walk with a splendid viewing platform for the infamous Denniston Incline.
P.
Always wanted to visit after reading The Denniston Rose. Displays are amazing, so informative and well presented. Weather was cold and miserable which added to the authenticity of the experience
J.
An absolute must visit we spent the day there and could have easily spent another or you could rush around and see some of it in a couple of hours your choice. The mine experience is no longer running but that shouldn't stop you from going there
L.
Wow!! What an awesome wee piece of history. We loved it! Shame it was raining as the view would be stunning. Will visit again next time we are over for sure.
M.
Absolutely Awesome Experience
P.
Lots of well presented information boards and great views. The tracks and the whole place in general was really well maintained.
S.
Free and spectacular
M.
A lot of work has been put into restoring part of the plateau.
S.
Loved the history of this place
T.
Amazing views on a sunny day.
Fabulous place to visit steeped rich in history.
C.
Denniston was truly a town of extremes, where workers mined the highest quality coal but families suffered the lowest living conditions.
Sitting 518 metres high in the clouds, the Denniston plateau originally had one access: a 1670 metre incline railway deservingly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. Steep with some gradients of 1 in 1.3, this engineering marvel used gravity and West Coast grit to transport coal wagons from 1880-1967.
The high-grade coal was worth the hardship, with unsurpassable clean qualities that supplied even the British fleets. The 100-year-long production that was the plateau can still be seen in the Cornish stonemasonry, the town loop tracks and the walkable 2.5km coal transportation rope road linking Coalbrookdale to the Brakehead.
Living on the edge was exactly that; trapped in ghastly mist or gloriously clear to the coast. A town where families couldn’t grow food, dig a long-drop or bury the dead, was simultaneously a thriving social place of brass bands, bowling greens and unionism. Walk the 1884 Bridle Path, spend an hour or two on the trail at Coalbrookdale, listen to the Denniston Rose app, and be blown away that 1400 people once lived here.
T.
Denniston contains so much raw untouched history! Its easy to forget where you are and step into the shoes of those that lived the mine day in and day out.
C.
Worth a visit to learn the history of this town, great information provided, very moving experience
L.
A great place to visit. It is worth reading the book Denniston Rose to understand the life here.
K.
Good info boards, toilets and some picnic tables. Also well worth doing the Coalbrookdale walk which takes you along the old coal mining rope road, through a tunnel to a well preserved fan house. Lots of relics along the way.
P.
Visited Denniston every year for the last 20yrs. It never fails to deliver...of course just the best on a nice sunny day; the views are to die for and the history amazing
W.
So much history awesome views cold winds when we were there wrap up a must do highly recommend
M.
Really Interesting place. Good interpretation signs.
I.
If your into New Zealand history, Denniston is a must visit.
R.
Cool historic area with lots of information boards and a great view from the top if the weather is clear. Heaps of parking up the top.
R.
The road to this site is steep & very twisty. Once there it's an amazing historic site of coal mining for over 100 years. Don't just look at the main site venture further onto the Denniston plateau to see more history & in some ways more complete ie Coalbrookdale about 2 km further along the road. When you get there walk along the tram cableway to the several mines & steam house. For the venturous, you'll find the remsins of a dam that provided the water for the boilers.
C.
Fantastic views. Great information panels and a most amazing historic site. The incline is astonishing and the Friends of the Hill a great source of information.
P.
Great experience. Best to visit Coal Town museum first before you go to get the context.
F.
Every kiwi should visit, so much history and amazing feats of reliance and engineering, a must do!
D.
Lots of old equipment around and good displays showing how it use to be and work
C.
This place is so cool, you could spend hours and hours here. Highly recommend
C.
Nice historic place 2 look around
M.
A very interesting historical place to visit. It's FREE. .
Great views of the land scape below. It's a MUST DO place.
E.
Loved it here, great views and plenty to see/do
M.
Fantastic history. There is so much left behind from the past mining. I was torn between being cross and being intrigued at what was left there. The shed towards Coaltown was a bit of an eyesore though. Its a shame this hasnt been removed as it was in the 1950s. Looks like it has been totally ransacked.
K.
Always enjoy visiting Denniston. DOC have done well here. Great open air museum
L.
Amazing views on one of new zealands historical coal mining sites!
C.
Interesting well-signed providing useful ino on historic artefacts. Road up is windy & narrow with steep drop offs, not for squeamish passengers
M.
Bit of a drive up the steep windy hill but worth it when you get therw
J.
Great summary of the mining history, a great example of what can be done with preserving the heritage to learn about the past.... And, amazing views!
B.
Wow, amazing history and good information, be prepared to learn about a bygone era and not a bad view over the coast either
P.
Grey day, full of history. Hard to imagine life there as it was. Really enjoyed seeing this.
A.
Beautiful view, really worth to go there.
A.
Underrated. Informative walk around the incline.
M.
Distantly related to the first manager of the mine ( the mine had no name , but was referred to as Dennistons Mine ) Although he was replaced after a year, it remained Dennistons Mine , and then Denniston .
G.
This place was really fascinating. It's such a shame the tours have stopped. My husband and I would have loved to have done the tour !
E.
The most awesome scenery & walk tracks. Good information along the ruins.
D.
Fantastic place. Really enjoyed reading the information boards

Awesome part of coal mining history
S.
Great place. Loads of history on early coal mining and the deprivation force on the families that lived there because of the location.

This is unbelievable what the miners and their wives put up with. Only a few houses left from what was once a thriving community. Fantastic remains of a time gone by.
J.
Absolutely brilliant. Such history, well worth the visit.
