Reviews of Awakeri Rail Adventures
K. J.
A fun family experience. Paul is fantastic and makes it extra special for the kids. You get to feed the chickens, ducks and swans. Stop in for a cuppa and some biscuits and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you pass through local farms!
I. N.
This is a very informative, enjoyable and delightful adventure! Our guide was clear and concise with his safety discussion conditions, incredible in his story telling, and relaxing and friendly in his cup of tea making, and the rail journey itself was also delightful and enjoyable!
P. R.
I'd driven past this a few times and finally got chance to visit.
Being a bit of a Railway buff I knew it would be up my street and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
You do few stops along the way one of which is the beautiful bushwalk, which takes around twenty minutes at a nice gentle pace on easy walking terrain.
There is also the Chicken Stop, I'd not fed Chickens for years and forgotten how entertaining they can be; and a half hour or so at the stunning Forest Bach for tea and biscuits.
All on all I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and I think it would appeal to pretty much everyone.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
😀

Excellent day out.The owner guide Paul was fantastic well set up and organized but relaxed which made the day a fun experience, you not only get to drive your own rail car 20kms and back but you get to feed chickens and ducks along the way and alittle bush walk set up along with an outside camp with belly tea, coffee or Milo and biscuits but with a group a sausage sizzle could be arranged also a proper toilet while at the tea break and I won't spoil it but there are a few surprises along the way. 5 star + thanks Paul I had a fantastic day out. 😀
R. M.
An absolutely fantastic experience. Loved every minute of it. Stationmaster Paul is extra special. Highly recommend 👍👍👍
K. V.
A great day out, thoroughly enjoyed by the toddler, teen and adults a like. Paul, the owner operator is a fantastic host! We enjoyed the 'Twilight tour', which was a fantastic time of day to explore, and travelling as the sun was setting felt extra special. Many thanks to Paul for sharing a must do experience!
R. P.
Amazing experience!!!! A definite MUST DO!!!! Paul and Sue were fantastic! Great for the whole family!!! Paul has such a passion and lots to learn! Great half day out!
R. J.
We went on this trip not knowing quite what to expect. We went with open minds and without any expectations. WOW! It was great!
Our friendly and fun guide Paul was informative without being boring.
I am no train enthusiast, but I enjoyed learning all sorts of interesting stuff not only about trains but other things as well.
We enjoyed the scenery and an adventure where you don’t know quite know what’s coming next. I don’t want to give away any of the content as it’s the surprising things along the way that make this trip what it is.
This is no white-knuckle ride and I feel it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Good value for money, the time flew by with laughter and smiles all the way. I highly recommend it to everyone!
This trip is something just a bit different!
B.
A great experience for young & old. It’s worthwhile taking dimp for the stop as mozzies are out in force!
K.
Great day had by all! Large group with lots of kids and we were all made to feel welcome. Was a great adventure and we will be doing it again soon.
F. J.
This is a great excursion for the family. I did the twilight tour, which was a fantastic way to end a very hot day. Paul, the owner-operator, is a good Kiwi bloke - he says it like it is and is never short of a story. If you're in the Whakatane area, it's well worth a couple of hours of nostalgic fun.
C. J.
Thanks paul...although would have liked these gumboots ..!!
S. S.
Wonderful trip. Paul was a fabulous guide and host. Would recommend this trip.
B. K.
Had a great time. Lots of interesting little stops. Good way to spend an afternoon with the family. Go do it 😁
S. G.
Great afternoon excursion. Paul went out of his way to entertain us. Great piece of history
D. P.
After booking and paying the night before, Paul had not checked the bookings and was unprepared for us. Lucky there was a cancellation and a no-show, so it was no problem for us to get in on the trip.
Paul has a great sense of humour and kept us entertained while we went off the rails (not literally) in the beautiful bush reserve. We commend his efforts in protecting the native Bush block in his own time and at his own cost.
The rail cars were easy to use and well maintained and with pedal to the metal (or the limiter) we managed to get to 24 kph on the return trip according to my GPS. Luckily its a single track return trip so if you get stuck behind a slow person on the way in, you will be in front of them on the way back after the carts are flipped around on the turntable.
Overall, it was a great way to spend about three hours in an interesting area doing an interesting activity.
B. R.
Wow, we had the most amazing time. In our family group we had Grandparents, Teenager family and young kids family. Paul the Owner Guide, was Kind, Funny, straight to the point and never short of a story or a joke. We fed the chickens, stopped for a cuppa and biscuits and had ourselves a bushwalk. A wonderful afternoon, something different to do. Thank you Paul for taking such great care of us
J. G.
Friendly staff, great trip, inquisitive Weka!
A great day out.
M. G.
Highly recommend anyone any age to do this...fantastic trip and fantastic guide! Paul was so good at telling us stories and joining in...u just have to do it! You won"t be disappointed!!!
J. T.
Cool bit of fun. I would recommend for all. The tour guide was full of local knowledge and a fun guy. The trip took about 2 hrs with a small bush walk and talk on native trees and a cuppa and bikkies at the halfway point. The little golf carts had been converted to run on the rail line and are a simple accelerator and brake system. Highly recommend you try this.
J. A.
Something a little different that can be enjoyed by both young and old. Pretty scenery with a short walk through White Pine Bush.
S. W.
We had a fantastic afternoon "riding the rails" in a modified golf cart. After a safety briefing the proprietor Paul provided informative & amusing commentary at several stops along the 10km journey. We really enjoyed the bush walk & light refreshments at the bush camp. Excellent value for money. Recommend for all ages.
J. D.
We had an awesome time on the rails, it was fun to see and feed the chickens, go for a nice bush walk and have some yummy bickies with a cuppa. Definitely reccomend it, it is fun for all ages!
R. K.
An excellent morning adventure. The rail ride has beautiful scenery and many fascinating and informative stops, with a few surprises along the way. Paul is a very enthuastic and great owner/guide.Great for adults and children.Thank you Paul. See you again. Reece and Dianne. Rotorua Family holiday Park.

This is a must do rustic adventure for all ages - Paul has a great sense of humour, a host who ensures everyones enjoyment and safety - AAA+

Loads of fun for adults and children. Beautiful scenery, worth going! A group of 10 adults is a good bargain on price.
A. M.

K. H.
Paul was a star nice way to spend an afternoon featuring yarns and quite a novel way to see the countryside
A. J.
Heaps of fun for the kids and adults. A decent length run which was good. Beautiful bush walk and no shortage of gingernuts.
D. P.
Had a fantastic trip on the rail carts over the Labour weekend 2020. Great area to explore.
J. W.
Something for everyone. Feeding chickens, short bush walk with informative talk by Paul, nice scenery and to top the journey off a unique cuppa tea! Would highly recommend this rail adventure!
P.
Really fun day out with the family
L. D.
We loved our experience. Family friendly and very nice scenery.
J. C.
Great for Adults or as a Family with kids, mainly kids over 4 would enjoy and take in the sights and scenery. The guides are super knowledgeable and the stop off in White Pine Bish is a super must see ! The most tranquil short bush walk with some of the biggest Kahikatea trees I have ever seen. Put it on you to do list in the Holidays ! Excellent value.
P. G.
Such an awesome trip, beautiful and the man running it was entertaining and very charismatic. Perfect for a family outing, and very reasonably priced for what you get. Such an awesome time, and there are toilets available as well as tea and coffee throughout the trip.
B. G.
10 out of 10 Vern was awesome great guide love the forest walk was informative and beautiful.
Loads of laughs and time went quick.
Enjoyed my cup of tea.
D. F.
What a great trip we had, we all thought it was going to be a 2 hr venture but it turned out it was about 4hrs.Paul was a great leader & instructed, & he could tell a few stories. Highly recommend.
C. M.
Fantastic experience for the whole family allow yourself to be transport back to nature thoroughly enjoyable and great value for money
G. V. T.
Absolutely fantastic. I especially liked the bush walk - very informative. Take extra layers tho', as it can get cold in the open sided carts. We went on a beautifully sunny day in October - & even though I had a jacket as my 3rd layer, I was still cold due to the wind chill.
r. t.
We had a really good time, the host made it very interesting. Local history, short bush walk and entertaining stories and humour. Safety was carefully managed, Paul provided value and a memorable trip. Definitely recommend.
A. G.
Our party of three pensioners and an 11 year old had a fabulous couple of hours here. James, the tour leader, gave a solid safety briefing concentrating on how to operate the vehicles and safely cross stop and give way scenarios. Highlight of the tour was the walk thru White Pine Bush Reserve...simply wonderful.
We all enjoyed our time here and will come again with more family members.
P. P.
Fantastic personalised trip with Paul. His personal touch & experience plus humour made this a highlight.
C. H.
We were having a great time. Sadly our rail trip was stopped by a fallen tree. 😆book a trip on this fun and delightful adventure. Absolutely enjoyable.
D. M.
Top place for young and old. If we had more time, we would have gone on the bush walk too. Very nicely put together and extremely well run. Take an early morning trip out and have the day left for other things to do in this great area
H. S.
What a surprise! Great little touches and a beautiful bush walk. Paul is a fountain of knowledge about the bush and local area, and pretty good on the jokes as well. Highly recommended as a morning or afternoon attraction.
S.
Even on a wet afternoon we had fun.
C. W.
Wish the ride could be a bit longer and do more activities on the journey. Feeding the chickens was fun. Cuppa tea stop is a neat little hideaway. Owner operator was friendly.
I. W.
Great way to see part of the long disused Taneatua Branch from the railway itself.
H. C.
Very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon with our friends. Informative guide. Look forward to doing this adventure again, perhaps next time bring our grandson.
L. C.
Love this place. Great place to take your kids.
L. M.
I really loved our Awakeri Rail experience. Paul makes the trip enjoyable for all ages and has great knowledge of the area. Paul sold us the ticket at a Home & Garden Show a ND this is why we visited the Eastern Bay of Plenty
A. D.
Great way to see the countryside with an informative tour guide. Golf carts are easy to drive and great fun. Stops along the way included feeding the chickens and ducks, a short bush walk and a cup of tea and biscuit in the bush. All in all a great trip and would highly recommend to others.
R. C.
Had loads of fun and highly recommend this adventure, also if you like lots of laughs this is the one to go on, thanks Paul for a great day, will be back to do it again 👍
J. D.
I actually grew up near this area. My brothers rode their horses in the hunts. IT was a return to the "good old days" not to e missed! (Watch a few surprises )
B. T.
We took relatives from overseas on this rail adventure and we all had a wonderful time. Paul gave a very good health safety talk before leaving as well as operation instructions. Paul made the whole experience humerous and enjoyable as well as informative. The bush walk was easy and feeding the ducks and chickens was a lovely touch. Meeting Mr Trump with his trousers down was hilarious! Thanks Paul for making this special. Being locals, we will certainly recommend your rail adventure to others.
G. S.
I took a group of 19 gold card folk on this adventure on Monday Feb 19 2018. What an adventure and what a host Paul was. Nothing was too much trouble and the many stops, points of interest bush walk and shared sausage sizzle were tremendous. One of the highlights was the White Pine bush walk and the wonderful conservation work Paul is doing there without any assistant from Doc is amazing and he is to be complimented on his great effort. He is a “jack of all trades” and does a great job of all. Thank you to the owners as a great time was had by all.
C. &. S. G.
We have been meaning to do this for a while & finally did it today. Loved the whole experience..feeding the chickens..a gorgeous & informative bush walk. Paul was full of funny stories & a great guide. Highly recommended!
M. B.
Kids loved it because they could "drive" 😃
D.
Very enjoyable experience with a fun host
B. B.
Really great experience with a lively and interesting guide. Several excellent stops along the way including feeding and holding chickens! Another one of the stops is a tour of a section of native bush, with interesting information about the trees and conservation efforts. Really fun and engaging ride that I would definitely recommend!
p.s. there is a small black hen who is calm, and a delight to hold :)
G. M.
Great activity, drive yourself, extra forest walk and Bush picnic.
D. M.
Fantastic adventure, family friendly trip
D. K.
Really great trip along an abandoned railway track across farmland, included a Bush walk. Thoroughly reccomend, the owner who led the trip was an absolute hoot, entertaining and informative and did a great job looking after the kids.
R. G.
We took the Grandies to this adventure which was a great experience even with all the H+S which was necessary. Interesting stopovers to feed the chickens and bush walk hit home the real hidden beauty of our native forests and the work Paul the business owner has been doing trapping predators that devastate our birdlife
Paul's enthusiasm for the business and his environment and his humour made the day one to remember
Highly recommend
E. M.
Awesome rail adventure to be enjoyed by everyone! I thought this was a hyped up tourist attraction so being local hadn’t bothered to go! Had visitors so took them on this adventure and everyone had a great afternoon! Very friendly and informative guide who made the trip! Commend his love of the area and protection of the reserve! Well worth a trip
P. S.
After purchasing tickets in excess of 18 months ago we booked for a 9am rail tour for a total of 12 people including family and friends. We drove from Tauranga and from arrival we were entertained by the owner and guide Paul. From a health and safety meeting that despite its seriousness was delivered with the right amount of humour to the banter with our kids, this trip started amazingly. Not knowing what to expect we thoroughly enjoyed driving the rail carts ourselves, enjoying a really cool bush walk and learning incredible history of the area. A very cool stop for tea and coffee with some fun twists made for a very memorable experience that we would recommend to all and do again ourselves. Thanks again Paul.
G. H.
What a great Kiwi rail experience. Paul makes an awesome 'kiwi bloke 'host. Very enjoyable couple of hours.
K. B.
Had a most enjoyable day with Shane on the rail trip. His knowledge of the history of the area plus the fauna and flora and his sense of humour made for a fabulous day. Shane's love of conservation showed through not only in the enthusiastic way he spoke but also in his actions, for example the way he collected rubbish and removed from the area. Thank you Shane for a lovely day. Well worth doing.
T. M.
What an awesome experience. Paul was so knowledgeable and made the trip fun for everyone. Definite must-do.
J. P.
I took my grandson and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Paul is a great host, and really entertains the children. The 3 hours flew, like the wee chariots.
j. C.
Fun little adventure. Owners not only ensure you enjoy the excursion but liked their care of our environment. Easy interesting Bush walk a bonus.
C.

Had a great morning there. Loved the train trip, feeding the chooks, walk in bush of kahikatea, and tea stop before turning the train units around and returning to the starting point. Have re-booked to go with family in the new year.
M. S.
Had purchased ticket early March planning to use it in July while holiday in at Mt Maunganui, we booked but had to cancel as the weather was dreadful so used it in December while staying in Taupo.
It was an all day trip for us as Awakeri is a long haul from Taupobut we were so pleased we did it.
What an exceedingly pleasant and different way to spend 2.5 hours.
Paul (owner operator) full of cheerful banter and interesting dialogue is an excellent host and entertained and informed us as well as adding humour to the whole experience. We made several stops on route and found the rail cars easy to operate requiring only an accelerator foot to drive. Thoroughly recommend this great value for money.
Do have a light jacket with you as it can be windy.
K. G.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience.Paul has a personality that relaxes the group allowing you to immerse yourself in this wonderful trip. Don't miss it.
A. W.
Fun, different adventure. Excellent guide who imparted his passion and enthusiasm in easy to understand bites. Highly recommend this local initiative.
S. B.

M. J.
This was a great little insight to the history of the area. Pleasant knowledgeable people and the carts were fun. Loved watching them be turned around and that cuppa and little Bush walk was just lovely.
M.
I have lost track of how many times I have taken this trip, but I know for sure there were will be more. We are so lucky to have this in our backyard!
D.
We had a fabulous afternoon doing the rail adventure with the grandies, thoroughly enjoying ourselves and having a ball. Lots of scenery, birds and animals to see along the way, a stunning bush walk through kahikateas, nikau, ferns, etc, a cuppa and biscuits, all was well-planned and fun and very "Kiwi". Thanks to the guys who looked after us all - you were just great, so kind and obliging. Would do it all again!
A. W.

A group of 6 friends, all golden oldies, enjoyed a fabulous trip. Highlights were feeding the chooks, walking in the Kahikitea White pine forest, a great cuppa and biscuits but mot of all the terrific fun guide Patrick, worth his weight in gold , the stories he can tell !!
J. H.
Very relaxed and lots of fun. We had three family groups with 7 kids among us, and everyone had fun. Would definitely recommend.
G.
This trip was awsome ,
having a little bit of history about "the Last Stand"for what New Zealanders fought !
So the KAHIKATEA tree will survive here at least .
Another good thing ,children can feel a bit how the train worked in the past ...the noise and shake😊;
Thank you for the sausages ,coffee, tea ....and your idea to put the cups in a hook under the pergola roof it is great ( now we will have too, some cups there)
Thank you Paul and team
D.
Memorable and worth every cent!
P. k.
Fantastic adventure for Beryl and myself. Daughters and grandies. We enjoyed Shane's humor and his interesting information on the trees (Tawa and Kahikatea) and medical qualities of the plants (Kawakawa) in the Bush. Really enjoyed the La-tea Shane. Great fun tour and very recommendable.
G. W.
I spotted a promotion for Awateri Rail Adventures at a home and garden show in Auckland. Otherwise would not have known about it. It was a long way to go and I was not sure what to expect. I took family with me. It was rudimentary but fun. Heaps of fun. Surprisingly good for a consumate high-tech city-dweller like me. Not sure how to explain why. But get an disused railway track. Adapt some old golf carts to run on them. Add some fabulous kahikatea trees and rustic huts. And there you have it. My advice. Just go there.
P. P.
Did the rail trail at awakeri and injoyed the tour. Had a grest group and guides. Thanks heaps for the fun. Highly recommend to everyone. But book ahead as they are very busy.

(Translated) I have always had the feelings of railway locomotives. As long as there are railway trains, especially old-fashioned locomotives, you must go to see wherever you go. Recalling the clanging sound of checking vehicles when I was a child, the steam flowing over the scene where the signal lights flashed, we found Here, I took a small 40-minute journey. The regular sound of wheels driving on the rails brought me back to my thoughts of running around on the motherland, even though it was just a small locomotive for inspection, the service staff Very warm and friendly. In addition to the railway, we also introduced a lot of local conditions. Our short round trip point was a corner of a farm. Just when we stopped, we flew out a piece of poultry, cheering and rushing to this staff member. He was The part-time breeder here showed us a few scenes of ducks and chickens laying eggs in the abandoned car. The sound of roosters crows from time to time.
