I was moved by finally being able to be inside Mataatua where it belongs and not in the Otago Museum I used to visit it in.
It felt like being home!
Highly recommend a visit for the lightshow, wharenui and kumara brownie :-)

So thankful that we came across this during our visit. We spent almost two hours sharing cultures while witnessing and engaging in traditional spoken and sung lore. The multimedia presentation in the historic lodge was worth the price of admission alone.
H.
A well organized one hour informative presentation.
I would highly reccommend this tour.

A beautiful Whare. Love the light show, staff are awesome and the hospitality is great.

An interesting experience. The building is massive and intricately carved. Ended the tour with some tasty kai and tea, more time to relax and finish would have been good. The lightshow was the highlight. The tour guide seemed a little uninterested, embarrassed perhaps?

Beautiful. The history is so interesting

I found this place by wandering around the town and I’m glad that I found this gem and did the tour. The guide was super and told us a lot about the Māori culture. The lightshow was amazing! If you are still thinking about going - GO! It’s awesome!

This wharenui's has had an epic journey around the world that started in 1875 returning back home to it's rightful place in Whakatane in 2011

Some of the information was quite uncomfortable for a European to absorb, but history has its bad and good moments. Lovely staff and great to see the house in a active use

Amazing cultural experience! The main thing to look at is a Maori Carved meeting house and their tour of it is well worth the time an money. They walk you through the Maori introduction when entering a meeting place, tell you about their culture and art form. You get a really personal experience with the art and the culture. Before you leave the meeting house there is a light show revolving around 3 of the local myths/ancestors. This show completely blew me away! There's plenty of time to talk with the guide and ask questions, ours was Tame! At the end there was also a tea and snack time which was a nice conclusion.
If you do not want to spend the money on the tour, they have a great visitor's center next to the house which holds a lot of information on the Maori culture, the history and heritage of the area and of the journey the meeting house took. There is also a 5 minute video you can watch for free. You can take a look around the outside of the meeting house, but can only go inside if there's not a tour or other event on.

The story is fascinating. The site has been beautifully established. The Meeting house is marvelous. The standard of restoration has melded well with new and old. The staff are all knowledgeable and genuinely welcoming and friendly. The kumara Maori bread is to die for.

Fantastic and genuine experience of a piece of Aotearoa history with an enthralling light show to finish. Definitely worth the visit - our family enjoyed this very much.

A visit to Mataatua was a great experience. It is very much like Chinese Culture. We have Ancestor Hall for the whole village. The building styles are different. The proposes are the same. To meet, to remember, to trace your root.

Our tour of Mataatua: The House That Came Home absolutely blew us away, we received a very gental but touching personal experience from the minute we walked in the doors.
Being guided through the history of Mataatua, Whakatane, watching the light show and enjoying refreshments with our guide at the end is something we wont forget.
This is a must see, you wont be disappointed.
We'll be back next year.

(Translated) Oh my god, what an intense visit !! I can only recommend you to go there if you want to spend some time in the Maori culture, it is the place to be! Far from the tourist side of the surroundings of Rotorua, you will discover part of the Maori culture in a small group. $ 49 entry, with a very pleasant little snack! We loved it !

Loin du côté touristique des alentours de Rotorua, vous découvrirez une partie de la culture maori en petit comité. $49 l'entrée, avec un petit snack fort agréable ! On a adoré !
