Reviews of Moutohora: Island Sanctuary tours
L.
Lovely tour around Moutohora Island which included seal encounters, bush walk, and swim on the beach. Tour guides were very knowledgable and lots of attention was paid to safety. Was a nice and chill tour and hot summer day well spent
C.
Nice tour, great guides, viewing the seals was a definite highlight. Nice clear water for swimming. Would be nice to be able to see more of the island but it is a conservation sanctuary so access is restricted
C.
Epic trip! Writing this as I'm on our way back from the island, the staff are amazing! We had a long walk around the island and staff were very knowledgeable, I was sick on the way there, however staff brought me a wet towel, bag and water immediately, the boat was spotless! Even saw some whales on the way back! Definitely worth all the money, 💯 would do again, highly recommend as it's the best thing I have done on my trip!
Lance, Kelsy, Hayden and Jess where amazing staff who are enthusiastic about what they do, and really make the trip that extra bit enjoyable!
s.
Great tour all around.
Check-in and boarding were a smooth process.
Staff on the boat and the tour where great. Keeping people busy during the trip while sharing their knowledge about everything on the way to white island.
The island it self was an amazing experience with knowledgeable guides.
Only issue for people that are not good with mornings, the start time is quite early at 7.30 boarding time.
M.
Just the nicest day out. Our skipper and guide were friendly, fun and informative. Highly recommend a trip with them
K.
White Island Tours is the only company who has permits to land with a boat on the island, and they do an amazing job!
The boat ride is ~1 hour there and back and you’re on the island for about 1.5 hours. Plan for about 5 hours total for the full tour.
We went during 5-10 knot winds and for those who get sea sick, it was very comfortable and manageable.
They have a brand new custom boat that makes it super easy to land on the island and the staff are AMAZING!
Cannot recommend White Island tours enough!
G.
This is one of the best tours you can book!
They are very well organized and eco-friendly (they ask you to bring your own bottle of water, so there's less plastic waste that ends up in our oceans!) :)
Our boat (Peejay 4) was very comfortable, super clean and nice.
The crew was amazing and really helpful all the time!
On our way to the White Island, we saw a pod of dozens of common dolphins and they were jumping everywhere...one of the best moments of the day!
The walking tour of the volcano is a unique experience! The guides are knowledgeable and pay a lot of attention to your safety.
The lake in the crater is simply amazing and if you love photography, here you can get really stunning shots!
The lunch is vegetarian, simple and really delicious.
The weather was so good that we managed to sail all around the White Island so we could see it from every single angle!
F.
THE BEST TOUR EVER! I didn't want leave this country without see White Island, so the staffs were very helpful with me and I could change my booking at the last minute to be able to do this Tour. Thank you for that! So finally, I don't regret at all this Tour, it was just incredible! The staffs in the new and beautiful boat were very nice, very helpful too (cause of the seasickness), very experimented, amazing finally.
The lunch was really good for a tour's lunch.
All the explanations during the tour were very interessant.
I advise all those who are not sure to do this tour to do it.
Thanks very much!

The white island tour was a fantastic experience, a well oiled operation with friendly staff and new boats. On the pricey side but actually excellent value for money as not only do you have the time on the island but you get a 1.5 hour boat trip to and from the island, passing other islands, great ocean scenery and the captain tries his best to find marine life. A good packed lunch is also included.
Walking inside the crater was awesome, a completely unique experience with sulphur, vents, mud pools and moon-like terrain. Knowledgeable and passionate guides safely took the small group around, sharing a lot of information about the geology and history of the island. Highly recommend, definitely book ahead as they are the only company who can take you by boat to the island, so is understandably busy
T.
My wife and I loved everything about the tour. All the crew were excellent and the tour of the volcanic island was amazing. The boat trip to and from the island was also a great experience. Well worth the trip!
S.
One of the greatest experiences we have had. A marine volcano that is active. The tours are great value and the staff are very informative and friendly. We had a lovely day for the excursion which helped.
Five stars. Definetly an experience everyone should enjoy.
R.
Awesome tour that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting New Zealand. The tour guides were friendly and accommodating with a great knowledge of the volcano.
Cruise across the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty to Whakaari/White Island – New Zealand’s most active volcano. After being fitted with hard hats and gas masks, guides will lead you on an exploration of the crater floor. Experience roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams, and the amazing lake of steaming acid. The vivid hues of yellow and orange, resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island, make it a photographer’s dream. After the time on the island, a packed lunch will be served back on the boat, the lunch consist of a cheese sandwich, muesli bar, apple and a small chocolate.
Whilst on the way back to land, we were lucky enough to get to witness dolphins swimming at the bow of the boat, it was an absolutely incredible experience to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat and was a great way to end the day.

A must do for EBOP!
Moutohora Island Sanctuary was a definite on our honeymoon 'to do' list! We started with checking in and receiving a warm welcome from Lisa and signing a quick wavier before descending to 'bio security'.
Moving across the wharf, we were then welcomed by other guests and our friendly guides Fiona, Malia and the skipper David. After a quick check to make sure we won't contaminate the Island Sanctuary we made our way onto the boat to start our quick journey to the island itself. Dolphins were just one of the highlights of our day trip!
Once we embarked to the island, we were quick to be surrounded by the abundance of birdlife that calls this magical place home. The views and 'untouched' nature of the Island made for a special feeling and we soon realised we need to help protect our wildlife.
A massive thank you to the whole team for allowing us just a small glimpse into the past and the future of what could be. Fi and Malia, you guys were awesome and thank you to you both for taking care of us and answering all our question!
Thank you Moutohora Island!

Going on the White Island tour was the best part of our holiday so far!
The experience alone was something I'll never forget and the views were simply astonishing.
Travelling to and from the island was a little rocky, as to be anticipated when travelling via sea vessels, however, skipper Lance did his best to keep it as calm a ride as possible. There were a few sea sick people on the trip over but the staff on board were attentive and quick to respond as soon as situations had arisen. They did continually ask throughout the ride to and from the island how you are feeling by going to each row and asking along.
Transfers in the dingy to and from the island were very smooth and you felt safe from how comfortable they were doing the transfers. They were also done in an exceptionally timely manner and they transferred any sea sick people off first.
The tour of the island was something you don't want to miss out on! I've never seen a thing quite like it and was completely taken aback by the views. They guides were very informative and answered all questions perfectly. You truly felt safe with them guiding you through the island.
After the tour and returning to the vessel, we were provided a great packed lunch with a variety of food inside.
On the way back Lance spotted dolphins and we diverted course to follow them and take photos. Something that was just a little bit extra for the day!
My day with White Island Tours was just exceptional from start to finish. Hayden was an absolute crack up and a proper stand up guy, our guide Jess was fun, engaging and very informative and Lance was a great skipper and a pleasure to chat with.
I would recommend this highly to anyone!
A.
Peejay's White Island tour was easily one of the best tours I've ever been on.
White Island is an amazing active place and it was a real once-in-a-lifetime experience to walk around the volcano. Absolutely worth visiting and experiencing for yourself.
I also want to thank and mention the staff, who were amazing from start to finish. We had a rough crossing to the island, and the staff were attentive to everyone who felt a little sea sick.
They were also very knowledgeable about volcanos and White Island itself, sharing the history of the island and answering all kinds of questions during our trip. Extra thanks to Olivia who lead our group!
The journey back was leisurely as we enjoyed our lunches, the sun and saw several flying fish.
One of the best things I've ever done, can't recommend it highly enough; thank you!
T.
We had a wonderful day onboard the PeeJay IV on Friday 19 April 2019, and cannot recommend this tour enough. The booking and check-in process were faultless, and there is even a cafe so you can get a coffee or quick bite to eat before you board.
It was clear that safety is paramount and at no point did I feel unsafe about being on an active volcano in the middle of the ocean! We were given lifejackets for the transfer to the island (via a small inflatable boat), helmets and gas masks. The island itself is like being on another planet and our tour guides, Cole and Jake, were generous in sharing their knowledge of the volcano and its history. They were also more than happy to snap photos for us and others on the tour.
Back onboard, we enjoyed a delicious packed lunch (sandwich, apple, slice, muesli bar and chocolate) and were lucky enough to spot a pod of wild dolphins. The dolphins were playing alongside us for 5-10 minutes and it was the cherry on top of an already incredible day!
One thing I didn't know until the night before was that the sulphur on the island can stain clothes and shoes, so make sure you wear something old that you are happy to throw out if it gets ruined. You will also need a certain level of mobility to transfer from the boat to the inflatable and onto the jetty (includes climbing ladders and over some boulders on the island).
l.
Unique tour to an active volcano. Nice boat ride with whales along the way. Personable & knowledgeable guides with a guided tour around the volcano & factory ruins.
A.
A great day out. Departed on a boat from Whakatane and soon saw various sea bird species. Nearer White island there was a pod of 30+ common dolphins. Take a warm jacket because you want to be outside enjoying the view and it is a bit windy.
To land on the island we put on hard hats, gas masks and boarded a small zodiac to get to the jetty.
Once on the island we were guided round be knowledgeable guides that also made sure people stick to the path and avoided walking into dangerous areas. If you have children, do make sure they follow the guides. A couple of times the gas masks were useful, but generally they were not needed, and nothing landed on our heads so hard hats were just in case of erruption but needed to be warn at all times. The old sulpher factory shows just how corrosive the place is.
Coming back there was a chance for a quick swim followed by a packed lunch with quite a veriety of stuff in it, but do make sure nothing blows away because the boat was doing a loop of the island at the time.
On the way back was a good opportunity to either look at more dolphins and ganets fishing
T.
Soooo good! Best experience on Aotearoa so far. Great boat charter, fantastic crew and tour guides, breath-taking scenery on route and on the volcano, loads of historic, nature and scientific information. Even had time to go swimming off the shores of the volcano!
R.
Amazing tour of White Island - bit of a boat ride to get there (take sea sickness pills etc if you get motion sickness) but it was great to walk around an active volcano, guides a very knowledgable and good value. Even supplied a free lunch pack! Great day out!
E.
The team were super friendly and helpful! The tour itself was packed with unforgettable views and an overall out-of-this-world experience. Big thanks to Hayden for passing on his knowledge. We had an amazing time.
R.
Really great time and knowledgeable staff... The twin v8 motors got us going... A most enjoyable experience with swimming included and hot vents in the beach
D.
We went to Moutohorā today with white island tours. It was an incredible experience and the tour team was amazing. Lance was the captain of the boat and the trip was smooth. The tour guides, Gaia and Jess, were awesome and super knowledgeable. They taught us about the Flora, fauna, history, and cultural important of this whenua. Would totally recommend this and I am really keen to go back.
J.
This is an amazing place- loved it - saw some Orcas and Tuatara there lots of birds . Just beautiful ! Very Impressed with the little Island ! 👍🙋♀️😊
M.
Amazing experience. This is a must do, only thing is that you most likely going to face a rough 90 min sailing to the island. :-)
P.
Would really recommend. Such a great company, we had a brilliant day. Our guide Sarah totally made it for us. She really knew what she was talking about, and was full of knowledge, I learnt so much. She answered all questions and made the day fun.
f.
Great experience and enjoyable. Your operators added to a memorable trip
A.
Lovely place to unwind and relaxmintend going again.
M.
Expensive however well worth the money. The tour of the island was great, both guides were very knowledgeable. The boat stopped to let us watch the dolphins on the way and diverted and let us watch a whale giving us plenty of time to take photos and experience it without being rushed which was a bonus. You are also given a pack lunch however may be best to wait until you get back to eat it.
N.
Amazing hike and boat ride. Worth the money spent
L.
A seriously good trip and tour. The crew aboard the "phoenix" were brilliant and Kelsey and Phillip who guided us around the island were fantastic. Extremely helpful, friend and knowledgeable. Beautiful weather and scenery. And all topped off with the dolphins putting on a great display. Highly recommended.
H.
Patrick and Lance were amazing, locals and tourists, do it, it's totally worth it!
P.
Had an amazing tour today on the Ferry. Fantastic crew! We had a 7 year old with us and the girls on board were amazing with him.
A massive bonus was being able to see some dolphins on the way back and hearing some info about them from the crew.
Can't recommend this enough! Would do it again in a heart beat.
K.
Great experience! The boat staff was helpful and kind. We didn’t realize the boat trip to the island was as long as it is—about 1:15 one way. Got a little nauseated despite the rather calm water. Would recommend motion sickness medicine if you are prone to this. You do also have to take a small inflatable from the boat to the island, which was a little scary. The tour of the island itself was very interesting. The tour guides were very kind and willing to answer questions. I would have liked a little bit more detailed information, but they did give a strong overview. The lunch at the end was a nice touch!
P.
What an amazing tour! The cruise out to the island is long but worth it. Getting so close to the vents was fascinating and we made use of the face masks! Finally a tour that ticked both adventure and learning boxes.
Also although not related to the tour, the coffee and food in the Cafe went down well!
G.
A fantastic experience! The crew/ staff were so accommodating and very passionate about what they do. The tour itself was amazing and so educational. Thank you everyone for such a memorable experience for our Honeymoon trip.
r.
The trip was delightful and included seeing both Dolphins and a couple of NZ Fur seals in the way- unexpected bonuses.
The crew were knowledgeable and ask welcoming. We loved our day and thoroughly recommend it.
V.
It's like being on the different planet. Amazing experience.
M.
Great trip to whale Island. Skilled and friendly guides and crew on the trip. Whale Island has New Zealand's best hot water beach
j.
too pricy for a short walk , and almost no bird at sight
A.
Trip to Moutohora today was fantastic. Nice boat ride out and back with a marvellous 2 hour stay on the island. A very personable, knowledgeable and informative guide provided interesting commentary and facts about the flora, fauna and conservation work taking place on the island and in the country at large. Highly recommended. A great day out. Thank you.
P.
White island is one of the must see places. The tour is well organised and staff very helpful.
P.
It has been a couple of years ago when we visit White Island with PJ. It was a great experience I won't forget.
N.
Lifetime experience of exploring live active volcano
E.
Lovely day out exploring the volcano. Well worth it if you can spend the money, as it is expensive. Brilliant staff in boat and at island (Sarah,Paul, Jinan...you guys were fantastic!). However, the rudeness and lack of communication skills of certain front desk staff lets the company down. Appalling experience. Would still recommend in spite of that.
B.
OMG this place is unreal. The boat ride was a little choppy and my travel friend got a little sea sick she was well looked after by the staff who really cared how she was doing. The island greeted us with a seal on the rocks. On the island approaching the crater the sights are beyond believe and our guide Sarah knew so much and was a great guide. This place is a must see.
T.
A brilliant island with spectacular views, one of the most breath taking views seen in new zealand. Totally worth to pay a visit to have a close look to get choked by the sulphur. The ship to the island is about 1.30 hour and if you have a chance to encounter dolphins and whales, they will pause, unfortunately we did not encounter any. Staff are friendly and professional and keeping every safe and sound. Highly recommend for people who. Like volcanos like me do and enjoy the tour.
D.
Lovely chilled out day on the island. So many saddlebacks flying around. Thanks to the team for accommodating us after the weather curtailed our plans the day before
E.
Really great experience with a professional and caring company...
B.
Amazing trip inside an active volcano
V.
Absolutely loved this experience again. We took our grand daughter with us as she firmly believes that the fairies live on White Island. The wonderful team went above and beyond their duties to make a little girls dream come true by placing pre-bought crystals for her too find. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
R.
Fantastic trip with great staff and perfect seas. Informative, friendly and a good group to be with. On way back i have never seen that many dolphins at once. Well done! skipper and crew.
M.
We have done the tour today and are still totally stunned by it!
Saw orcas/killer whales on the way to the island and stopped for a while to watch them.
I usually don't like to take tours, but with this one I felt like the guides know what they were talking about, they seemed excited about it themselves, they did not rush us through anything at any time. And they seemed genuine and honestly interested in the tourists/their stories as well.
The provided lunch is nothing amazing, but still a lot better than I thought. We were told whatever we don't eat will be given to the pigs which I really liked as well. Plus, it came in a paper box rather than some plastic wrapping.
The tour is totally worth 200$ (and I'm a cheapskate, haha)!
M.
A bucket list experience from the purpose built boat ride with dolphins, little blue penguins and Australasian Gannets to an active volcanic island of bubbling steam and water with minerals deposits. Professional guides , skipper and crew and staff make for a most magnificent experience in N.Z.and a must see on the world stage.
M.
After bad weather delayed departure it was third time lucky definitely a good idea to have a few days up your sleeve if you are keen to do this trip. Worth the wait ...we did tongariro crossing a few years ago which was awesome but if you want to get up close and personal with an active volcano this is the trip for you. Great guides...thanks Cole and Amy a bonus was seeing dolfins on the way home thanks to our keen eyed skipper.
R.
What a wonderful trip, the Crew were outstandingly attentive & informative. Kelsey was so informed on the history & the abuse & humour kept us all laughing, well done you all shame l could only give 5 stars & not 10.
D.
So good. Great experience made better by amazingly helpful and friendly crew. Nice pack lunch provided too.
This is a must if you're even vaguely interested in NZ's volcanic identity.
B.
Guya was a great guide, verry knowledgeable and peachy.
f.
EDIT: determined-we just kept rebooking, rearranged some other hotels/stops on the holiday to keep trying at this tour. We lucked out and got to go. WORTH THE WAIT AND ANY HASSLE. Seriously amazing, and your staff handled it great from start to finish. So I’ve changed my score: when it actually can run it’s a 10/10
Original:Cancelled, tell us late the night before we go. Rebooked for the next day, call us evening before to say “maybe” then cancelled again in the morning just before it was due to go. The weather has been perfect the last two days but the swell or things makes it the boat trip unsafe. Not really the staffs fault, you’ve got safety regulations to meet, but they kept leaving us hanging. It was meant to be the big highlight of the holiday and we could just sit in the hotel room waiting on confirmation. So disappointing.
R.
We had a FANTASTIC time on the White Island tour. Definitely do this while in New Zealand! So cool! Also, I was worried about being seasick on the boat ride but it really wasn't bad at all.
J.
Beautiful town to visit. A sunshine coastline that you can only dream about. Lots of great shops and top service
G.
Unexpected heavy swell made the journey to the island a little unpleasant. Hayden our Skipper did a fantastic job handling the sea conditions. The crew worked tirelessly helping people who felt unwell. Accomdation by company was good as well.
L.
The tour was amazing and so were Hayden and especially Rachel, who kindly called the AA for me and use her membership when I locked my keys in my car! She was a massive help at putting my mind at ease and Kelsey and Hayden gave an entertaining commentary on the Island.
Thanks so much guys
M.
Excellent tour, friendly helpful knowledgable crew. White Island is one of those "must do" experiences...how often do you get to wander around on an active volcano?!
M.
We got really close to the sulfur vents which was an amazing experience. I actually wish they had full face masks, to protect the eyes from the stinging fumes.
Staff were very helpful to anyone feeling sea sick, and on the way back we followes a pod of Orcas for a little while.
N.
Fantastic day out exploring a lovely island. Friendly and knowledgeable tour guides make for a great day trip.
R.
Great trip to White Island and helpful guides. We appreciated Captain David's commentary onboard and local knowledge.Worthwhile and convenient to book at Rendevous Motel whose staff were very helpful, especially in making the boat trip lunch to my wife's special dietary requirements.
D.
I am only putting 5 stars as google sent me to review which was an error and I didn't realize I had put any stars, so apologies. I am not wishing to put review as would be wrong of me seen as not been. I would love to go one day. One question, I am in a power wheelchair, can you accommodate me and my wheelchair? Thanks
J.
Absolutely fantastic tour of the white island. The staff were all friendly and informative. Had a fantastic time on the tour and would say it is a must when you travel to New Zealand
J.
a MUST DO for every NZer & overseas person visiting Whakatane!
White Island is simply amazing, unbelievable and alive!
To be able to go on a luxury boat trip and land on White Island & explore & be guided is a wonderful experience
L.
Bad luck for us tour has been cancelled due to bad weather conditions. I can only recommend to have a B plan or stay several days in the area if you can in case you are in the same case than we were.
N.
Brilliant morning out with White Island Tours. Highly recommended. If you get a great day in terms of the weather White Island really is an amazing experience
m.
Fabulous very exciting & informative staff i was a bit scared but they were very good with me & made me feel safe loved it a great lunch supplied would recommend the cruise rather than the helicopter better value for money
K.
Well I have never been on the boat but I have been to whale island it is amazing. When the Sulfur vents go off that is the best time to get away with a fart well that is what my teacher told me haha. Also dear the team at pee Jay's and the owner I am very sorry to hear that pee jay 5 went up in flames and sunk this afternoon. And I have a funny idea that the boat costed at least 1 million dollars or maybe more but that boat is 1 of a kind it was very special to Whakatane. And I said it was one of a kind because no other boat will have that name and design. I would've sent you guys an email but I couldn't find your email address so good luck but also at least it wasn't Zambooka that ended up sinking and caught fire because then you will certainly be doomed cause that is 1 of the best boats you can get so I hope you will be able to find another boat that looks like pee jay 5 so good luck with your business 😊😊😊 from Krystian Bockman and I'm from Whakatane.
T.
This tour was just magnificent...great logistics...super friendly staff on board the really fast cat...great teamwork amongst the crew as well...the skipper rocks and the island...breathtaking...never seen such dedicated and attentive crew...if you think Emirates is cool- they are cooler ...thanks so much for having me on this awe inspiring experience
N.
Amazing trip to experience, professional and friendly staff who were so knowledgeable and passionate about White Island. So glad we did this tour
R.
Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff.
A wonderful tour, we are lucky we got to experience the island.
M.
Awesome tour. Everything's great. The front office, café, hospitality, tour, guides, walk and free food. Could have gotten better with a shorter walk. Awesome!
A.
This is a popular tour - book in advance. They were sold out on the dates we wanted, so we had to adjust our travel plans and come back. Worth it.
M.

(Translated) Excellent guided tour. Had normal swell, with a little more sea, it would be borderline for us. It is 1 1/4 h on the way, easy. The lead is great, a bit of dancing on the volcano.

(Translated) Getaway to the moon!
If you like lunar landscapes this is for you. Colorful rocks, fumaroles, hot springs ... We move in small groups with helmets and sometimes mask in the heart of the crater. Fortunately asleep. Professional and friendly organization. Good command of English is a plus. Simple closed shoes are sufficient. Warm clothes for the crossing that you can leave on arrival. Crossings and visit in about 5 hours. High price but staff in numbers to take care of us.

Heureusement endormi.

(Translated) After a well organized registration, we entered the boat, which offered enough free places. The two sights that were on the way were well explained. The swell, which according to the staff was mediocre, was tolerated by most. The handing out of the masks, helmets and life jackets was routine. To be able to enter White Island, you have to change to a smaller boat, which is why you also need the life jackets. There were about 15-20 people in our group and we were led by two guides. The explanations were easy to understand, even if you had to listen very well, as the guides sometimes spoke a little quickly and the noise from the approaching and departing helicopters was a bit annoying (not very often). We were honestly told that the helicopter groups are getting closer to the crater because they have much smaller groups.
After the tour there was the opportunity to go into the water for a short time, but since we were the penultimate boat that was transferred, the time would not have been really enough.
Shortly after dropping off, lunch boxes were distributed in which there was a piece of cake, a muffin, a cereal bar and a chocolate biscuit and there was also a bottle of water. The waves on the way back were even calmer. However, we were not lucky enough to see dolphins or the like on the way back or on the way back.

(Translated) Worth to visit. Good explanation and security. Terrible what happened there a few weeks later. One of the guides we had is missing. You get the shivers that it could have happened to us
