Reviews of Muriwai's Cave
D. S.
Small historic room sized cave close to kids playground.According to the sign, the original cave extended over 100 metres. Nice to see some history close to the town, would look good if lit up at night.
B. M.
One of three very important Maori landmarks in Whakatane. This cave has great significance for local Iwi but it's only in the last 20-30 years that this has been recognised (prior to this there was no sign, carvings or parking, it was just a cave on the side of the road) and intricate carvings commemorating its history. The cave itself is partially collapsed so isn't as big as it used to be (totally safe though). The board with the history of the site is getting a bit faded/sunburned & could use replacing.
B. D.
Neat little cave, small but worth a visit for some local history, there is a plaque outside with historic info

It's a TripAdvisor must to visit but hold your horses..don't go in there expecting a HUGE cave..its only merely 3m deep. Went with huge expectations, but were a bit disappointed but hey, it is what it is. The craftsmanship on the entrance stands out and can't be missed from the road!
D.
Its a great piece if nz history.
D. F.
It's a cave of historical significance. Not much to it but worth a look.
S. A.
Its a small cavity in the rocks. Its only about a few metres deep, i went imagining a network or a long tunnel, equipped with flashlight so was a bit disappointing so i recommend to align your expectations accordingly.
F. B.
Not a deep cave.

Whakatane, harbour, "The heads" can be a dangerous bar to cross ! Lovely area to picnic, with 2yr old to play at the park.
Just over the hill the beautiful "Ohope" Ocean Beach" amazing holiday beach and harbour for fishing.

Muriwai's Cave is one of the most sacred and historically significant places in Whakatāne. Located near the town centre - the entrance to the cave is easy to spot from the road.

I found the history of the cave intriguing.
The depth of the cave mattered none to me, the facts and historical significance surrounding the site is everything.
