Reviews of Paddle Steamer Waimarie
M.
Great for an outing with friends, family and other good company. Board early to grab a good seat. The passenger count appears to include the indoor cabin seating, so best get on board early on a sunny day.
J.
The only coal fired paddle steamer in New Zealand. Journey an hour up the Whanganui river as far as the Upongongaro church.
A ride that was once a mainstay of 19th century travel. A great experience. Highly recommended.
L.
Great little museum showing the history of the Whanganui river and the boats that have travelled along it. We took the 2 hour cruise on the steam powered boat at a cost of $49 per adult. The staff were excellent and the commentary very informative. Lovely tea, coffee and cakes at reasonable price on board.
M.
Had a great 2 hours listening to the Andrew London Trio play jazz as we cruised up the river and back. A good range of snacks and very friendly crew polished the night off well. Great to have such a gem still operating in the river.
c.
Great experience. Such a relaxing journey. 2hrs up and down the Whanganui River
N.
Awesome experience. So glad I did it. Stunning views of the river and surrounds. It was fantastic hearing and seeing the history of this old steamer. Couldn't have had friendlier or more helpful staff. Great value too at just $45 for a 2 hour experience.
G.
Whanganui, voted most beautiful small city and steaming along the river you can tell why. Went on the jazz cruise and it was delightful, great music and a very friendly crew. I would recommend this to anyone.
F.
Absolutely a must for those who appreciate historical transportation. You know who you are. Well done to the people who preserve this steamer, keep it running and all the supporters if the museum. Love Whanganui.
J.
Lovely step back in time make sure you look through the museum attached first to really appreciate the history of the Whanganui River and its importance to the area
Very sedate cruise nice and relaxing
Cafe looked good too
K.
This was a great experience. We loved the 2 dudes in the engine room. All the crew was very professional.
R.
I love this trip. We had amazing staff, who were friendly and welcoming. Filled us in as we went. We also had a tour guide who was great. It was great value, it was about 3 hours by the time we saw the museum, then boarded, had our guided tour, then got back. We enjoyed lovely sandwiches and tea and scones while on board. We had a fantastic ride and loved the history of the boat and the River. Would not miss it if visiting.
S.
Great cruise, scenery and history. Excellent staff... fun and friendly. Highly recommended for the young and old
J.
Fabulous... If you haven't done Whanganui's Vintage Weekend...then you are missing a spectacular 3 day event. This Vintage Jazz cruise aboard the Waimarie is one of a whole programme.
Photo's added as a few Victorious Steam Whanganui members 'Steampunked' your amazing Waimarie paddlesteam boat. Thanks for commenting on your 🌟 rating and it's been well earned.
E.
Thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the Waimarie on a lovely summers day. People friendly and relaxed. Great watching the pigeons being released - a great nod to history of the Wanganui River.
a.
Amazing ride in a vintage steam boat. The views were beutiful and the staff will take photos of you in the engine room, on deck and while holding the captain's wheel.
J.
Great fun. The trip was full of historical information and the boat chugged along at an enjoyable pace. So if you have about 3 hours to spare and want to relax, then this is the trip for you. Paid parking is nearby, as is free if you ask local I - Site staff where this is. The boat departs from the town side of the river about 200 metres from one of the main bridges. Friendly staff, especially Heather, make this a must-do experience. Go have fun cos its suitable for all ages, food and drink are available on board.
S.
Fantastic experience. Even had homing pigeons on board that they released when we got to the farthest point from the beginning. Great little cafe/bar on board also.
G.
Nice trip down the river, but the cruise team doesn't give much commentary and the guy at the Cafe touches food without gloves
A.
Nice ride. The tour guides talk about the history of the steamboat during the trip.
S.
What an enjoyable way to spend a day. Staff are friendly and so helpful. Will do again.
R.
Very interesting museum with the history of paddle steamers on the river
P.
Awesome trip down the wanganui river on a vintage paddle steamer. This is a must do for all kiwis and tourists alike.
K.
Such a nice time on board! Two kids loved it! Got to pat the homing pigeons and watch the engineer shovel coal to the firebox.. friendly deckhand made the kids day with the lollipops! Thanks to all the crew for a fun trip
R.
Fantastic - must do - Whanganui experience. It's a lovely trip with so much to see and lots of interesting information too. Wave out on your trip - locals love it too. You'll be thrilled you had this fantastic experience - guarantee it
R.
The section of river you get to see is not super interesting, but seeing a well restored, working steam ship in action and hearing the history is well worth it.
A.
Great couple of hours spent on the Waimarie. Informative staff ... the river was very calm, the weather a little cold ... but a beautiful autumn day
Y.
I haf very comfortable, easy, and relaxed time. but 2hrs tour is too long.
S.
We took our Grandson Hunter on the boat today. He will be 6 on Wednesday and this was his present. He thoroughly enjoyed it. The crew were amazing. He could touch the pigeon and he was lucky enough to hold the steering wheel. Thank you so much crew for making a little boy so happy from beginning to end.
J.
We greatly enjoyed the Jazz Cruise with a talented trio that played for the whole two hours.
Any cruise on Waimarie is a great experience but the occasional special trips are well worth waiting for, many of the passengers ventured into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up in Jazz and Steam Punk themes.
I have cruised on Earnslaw, Tug Canterbury and S.S Badger on Lake Michigan. There is a magic about steam.
P.S look out for combined steam train/ Waimarie packages, we left that too late this year.
J.
Such a beautiful trip up the Wanganui river. The homing pigeons were awesome. The crew were so welcoming. They didn't mind the kids holding onto the wheel.
V.
Fantastic experience with family and awesome customer service. Nice Crew.
F.
Great cruise with lots of interesting information but the catering wasn't sufficient for the amount of people on board. Unfortunately we missed out on the savouries and wine so it was a dry and hungry two hours.
C.
I cannot think of a better way to spend 3 hours in Wanganui than a leisurely cruise up the Wanganui river on the only coal fired paddle steamer in NZ.
Built in 1899 it steamed the river carrying passengers until it was left at the bottom of the river for 50 years.
Uplifted and lovingly beautifully restored so we may once again enjoy this unique steamer.
It steams up river for hour then returns, blowing her whistle to let one and all know she is still operating.
Along the way the informative and welcoming crew relay the history of the Wanganui river.
Carrying a pigeon on board it is released to head back to base with a message as was done years gone by.There is food and drink on board and the toilets have a porthole to peek out of.
Fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
L.
On a lovely summers day we thoroughly enjoyed our trip on Waimarie on the Whanganui river. Staff were wonderful and helpful with their knowledge. Pidgeons were interesting. Enjoyed the club sandwiches.
Thank you for a lovely day.
T.
The experience going down the river boats is unique. Dont get the seats right at the back of the boat as the steam and coal smoke though part of an experience can be difficult. There is a lot of history and a lovely little museum too..
C.
This was arranged by our tour guide and there was lots of interest by locals and visitors. Was part of the introduction of a co operative venture with a local Brewery Roots and Co.with labels depicting the Waimarie paddle steamer .It was on its first trip post covid and for Summer sails. Very enjoyable and had lunch and cider on the topdeck as we meandered up the Whanganui River on a 2 hour excursion.
G.
If you are in Whanganui, do not pass up the chance to cruise the Whanganui River with the fantastic team on the Paddlesteamer 'Waimarie'. A well run operation, from the booking and informative museum to the crew on board, all having the time to chat with us. Couldn't recommend the experience high enough.
G.
Brilliant day on the Wanganui River.
G.
If in Whanganui with spare time you would be woeful to not do a two hour trip on the local paddle steamer MV Waimarie up the Whanganui River. The river trip starts from the jetty behind the Steam Boat Museum in down town Whanganui. The running and management of these trips is first class but not sure why people from out of town pay $5 more than locals noting we all pay tax in Aotearoa to support rural towns.
C.
Beautiful place to visit & very well laid out.
S.
Arrive early to find parking plus go thru the museum there so you can understand a bit about the history. It's a well worth cruise most enjoyable.
M.
Amazing experience - staff very friendly and knowledgeable- pays to book in advance. Advised during booking that no food/drink to be taken on board, and then they ran out of food so my children were starving by the time we got back. Should amend this to say you can take food on if they can’t supply. We gave up our seats to an elderly couple as there weren’t enough seats (think it was fully booked with 120 people), great views and lots of commentary along the way.
P.
An historic working coal-powered Paddle steamer that does a 2 hour round trip up the river most days in the summer months.
L.
Amazing journey back in time, one of a kind in New Zealand
D.
A great Whanganui attraction, providing a gentle trip on the river. Feel the gentler pace of a bygone era, when the Whanganui River was the highway to the Central Plateau.
L.
Awesome Day out supporting Jigsaw by buying a plastic duck to swim down the Wanganui River.
A huge turn out of people and families on a beautiful day.
Lots of entertainment and prizes.
Good on you Plumber Dan for making this happen
B.
Loved the boat trip. Nice food at the Cafe which is the turning point.
P.
Lovely cruise with good commentary
L.
Lovely trip up the river, the crew were so friendly and helpful. Obviously love sharing the Waimarie with the public.
A.
Very Good Experience. Very Professional Team.
B.
Really great crew and a nice gentle cruise up the river. You can see the love that has been put in to restoring this boat well done and keep up the good work
D.
Magic experience
Good value
Part of Whanganui history
A.
Great way to spend a couple of hours
A.
Nice trip despite the history lesson, it was Extremly funny when everyone on the boat noticed a large rubber ducky and the tour gide didn't and rattle on :,D
S.
Would have been 5 stars if we could have stopped over for lunch
Pre launch video amazing and great trip
J.
Great, kids loved it - especially the engine room. Two hours was enough for my young ones, any more and I think they'd have gotten board.
A.
It's wonderful old technology up close -- seen, heard and felt. If you're lucky you'll get a cloud of condensed steam on your face, a whiff of smoke in your nose and some bits of coal ash in your hair.
R.
Just a lovely trip scenery boat and crew
C.
Fantastic outing, the girls had a great time! Big thank you to the knowledgeable and helpful crew 😁
L.
Nice and relaxing
R.
A beautiful cruise up the awa (river) on the Waimarie.
h.
Went on a pirate and princess cruise, kids loved it, face paint and actors on board.
S.
Friendly crew, got to have a look at the steam engine and boiler, well priced tasty snacks and a brilliant trip on a 120 year old paddle steamer.
S.
My family enjoyed the trip and the sausage rolls. Thank you
S.
On a windy day the Skipper and crew showed amazing skill to control the vessel into dock. We are fortunate to see old sailing methods still in use. Many thanks.
S.
Wonderful staff and a memorable cruise for Vintage Weekend. A must for all
J.
Enjoyed the trip - however, there wasn't to much to see on the journey there and back. It seemed a bit expensive for what it was. Highlights were seeing the steam engine being operated and seeing the carrier pigeons take the messages back to the boat shed.
K.
We had a lovely trip upriver on this amazing old paddle steamer. The crew were very friendly and helpful and we had a great commentary about place appearing on shore, the history of this great boat that, until a few years ago was a wreck on the riverbed.
There is an excellent museum at the wharf terminal in Wanganui. Well worth a visit.
S.
Very unique, lovely crew, very relaxing. A wonderful experience
B.
Great experience with a friendly crew. Worth the money.
C.
Great money with excellent commentary from Murray all staff is kind and friendly, we so enjoyed our 2 hour trip. Many thanks.
V.
Lovely trip plenty of information about the history of both the river boat and the area.
S.
Do it dont miss this gem.
The paddle steamer is beautifully restored, kept and run by a volunteer crew who are all happy friendly. Morning tea, fresh scones!!
J.
Bit cold in winter but a really cool historic experience.
J.
Must do on a nice day. A great relaxing way to see the river with a history lesson thrown on top. Travel tip: Make sure you get there early so you get a good seat preferably on top. Pokémon Go tip: Great way to hatch eggs
J.
Great trip up the Whanganui rive to Upukwell worth it
B.
Great trip up the river
D.
Nice ride but expensive
C.
Awesome 👌
K.
It was nice for an hour but 2 hours was too long. Couldn't hear the history lesson very clearly and I am sure there could be a lot more history they could share. Had food but very basic and could of use gloves. The sandwiches were at children height and had no cover over them which was gross. Coffee needs to be updated. Wouldn't recommend but wasn't very expensive however I would rather pay more and have nice coffee and food to buy. The staff were nice and answered questions. Sucked seeing all the rubish in the river. Maybe a game could be made out of catching it in a net to deposed of it.
P.
We had a great time and will be back.
R.
We had a fabulous trip on Waimarie and can thoroughly recommend it as a most enjoyable experience.
I.

A.

R.
Great trip, full of local information very well narrated. Thank you.
P.
Supurb 2hr river trip on the Waimarie, the fully steam driven paddle cruiser which has been lovingly restored and maintained by a small team and volunteers. Located by Wanganui's main bridge this stand out tourist destination, with its own free museum, was surprisingly quiet enabling anyone travelling the freedom to chat with the crew, investigate the boat (inc engine room) and in my case even ringing the 12pm ships bell, all of which is encouraged. The commentary was interesting and overall one of the nicest experiences we had, especially for $45. A big reason to visit Wanganui and then to find lunch in one of the town's many restaurants nearby. To note, the Google search is wrong and they are open Wed-Mon (closed Tue) as listed on their web site
A.
Check it out.. steam power era and operational steamer still functions on river.. awesome!!

(Translated) Very nice boat tour with the historic paddle steamer, nice view, staff very friendly, many explanations to ship and surroundings, nice atmosphere on board
Minus: Catering is not sufficient and with disposable crockery, sustainability should be in a field with a hundred-year-old ship in all areas theme! We would like to have bought a nice reusable coffee mug with logo!
(Original)
