Reviews of Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery
C.
A welcome addition to Whangārei, has already uplifted the area and the architecture is interesting, detailed and worth a stop. The exhibition was fantastic to learn about his life and also the Maori Gallery essential to reflect the local community and history of NZ as well as a permanent space to exhibit. Definitely worth a stop. Staff were welcoming and friendly despite it being busy and school holidays. Didn't visit the restaurant this time. Easier to book online to reserve a space if busy.

Spent Saturday to visit and was not disappointed.Hundertwasser personal documents are very interesting read. The rooftop garden is something I could envision in future housing. Great views of Whangarei from the Cupola..there is a chair assist to get to the Cupola. We went to Aqua Restaurant but due to its popularity there was a wait line so opted to go to one of the restaurants out in the outdoor plaza. Will definitely go back again.
S.
Well done Whangarei for making this building! It is fabulous. The staff are really enthusiastic and friendly and passionate - whether they are in reception, on the roof top garden, in the exhibition area, or recommending and serving you in the really great Cafe within. Highly recommend stopping here.
J.
What an awesome new addition to Whangarei. Was really stoked to come back home to Whangarei recently and see that this has finally been built. Amazing architecture and a real awesome vibe. Refreshes the basin even more and would be amazing to see more influence through the city. Didn't get the chance to go inside this time around but just wandering the exterior was awesome. Will be back.

I flew up for this permanent exhibition, he says some pretty awesome things and his art like me is colourful and very stunning. I really really encourage everyone to go see this wonderful display and the architecture is superb. Whangarei you have done yourselves do very proud.

The recently opened Hunertwasser Art Centre took us back to Vienna where we had visited in the 80's. It is a quirky beautiful building and will hopefully attract visitors to Northland. We had dinner at Acqua, the restaurant in the Centre and couldn't fault it. Absolutely delicious!
R.
So nice went with the family, roof garden amazing, and the galleries inside are so cool, so much art from hunterwasser and local artists. Beautiful building adding to the arty town that is Whangārei.
n.
Absolutely amazing!! Beautiful building, so much love was put into all the little details and the staff and volunteers are so passionate about the project. It was also very interesting to get to know so much about his personal life/ other aspects than just his art. The cafe in the building Is awesome too. Would definitely go back and would recommend for everyone.
D.
Such an amazing space to visit. A truly unique building and a great tribute to the artist. Highly recommended. The cafe is good as well.
F.
What an extraordinary experience! We were there 5 hours! Fabulous place; amazing stories from the guide, wonderful creatively presented food in the cafe. The building, including the roof garden was full of whimsy and joy. A living work of art.
C.
Fantastic place though a little empty. A tendency to sanctify a man who was an artist and architect which grates a bit. Anyway, the gift shop is better than most, not overstocked and interesting stuff, and the cafe good too. He really was a breath of fresh air. Great that so many in Whangarei has got in behind this project.
L.
A beautiful museum. Surroundings are nice too with a lot of place to eat. Highly recommended.
A.
This was one of the highlights of our Northland trip. The museum far exceeded any expectations. Not just the concept and building but his artworks were so vibrant. The museum staff were incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastically shared really interesting information. This was as good as any art museum I've seen throughout the world.
N.
Wow, wow, wow. So hard to to comment on a place that is so good. If passing by , or even make the effort to drive there, please do. You won't be disappointed.
R.
Amazing building! Plus, the Māori art gallery has some beautiful art, it would have been nice if there was a larger space to showcase more Māori art.
Best if you book online via their website, as they’re limiting the number of people in the venue.
Has a cafe and a second level and on the roof, some rare plants (one plant is the last of its kind in the world!
Ask the volunteers about the making of this architecture masterpiece. They were very informative.
Note, the floor tiles dip and rise (uneven floor) to simulate walking on the ground. So, don’t be looking at your phone! Look around because all the designs are random, like nature.
Enjoy!

A fabulous morning visiting the newly opened Hundertwasser art building in Whangarei. What an amazing building and fantastic collection of art, northland should be so proud to have this asset. An amazing art journey. This art centre has put Whangarei on the map. It becomes an internet sensation. I know Hundertwasser from his famous Kawakawa toilets. The art centre blends in well at the waterfront. Will visit it again.
