Local talent night at the Blackball Inn. A painting of the original Federation of Labour is the stage backdrop. All who enter the inn walk under the revered portrait entitled "St Jacinda". This is socialist country born from the struggles and death within the coal mining community. Pike River is over the hill. In the 1960s the hippies arrived giving Blackball an eclectic mix. On stage we hear songs of struggle (most beautifully sung) - Joella's voice was vibrant and powerful. Possum sang Sugarman. Trev the local poet reminded me of the yarns of Sam Hunt. What a fabulous night of laughter, cool characters, and socialism. We'll be back.

What a charming place, run by lovely people. So much history behind their family and Blackball. Food, eggs Benny and egg on hash, was so delicious and a fine coffee

We stayed here prior to starting the Paparoa Track and we are so glad we did. Nick (proprietor) was very friendly, welcoming and accommodating to our request for space to prep our hiking food. Our room and the separate bathrooms/shower were spotless, and the bed was really comfortable. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner - can recommend the bangers & mash (with locally made Blackball sausages) and the curry, and the included continental breakfast had a nice range of choices.
The value of money was outstanding, possibility the best we have experienced in New Zealand. Highly recommended!

Popped into the '08 cafe for afternoon tea. Excellent service, lovely fair trade coffee, hot chocolate and West Coast ginger beer with huge slice of very yummy carrot cake and brownie. Very chatty and knowledgeable staff. Some interesting local history books and photo albums. Nice deck and snug. Great value for money.

Great place to stay. We stayed 1 night. real friendly locals. Great Staff. Great meals. Great beer. Great bed. Great showers. I will go back and stay because there is so much history in Blackball 1 night sure ain't enough time to see everthing. I do recommend the Blackball Inn as a place to stay. Keep up the great service you have.
Many thanks from the 3 Stewart Brothers.
We were there tramping the Paparoa Track.

They might not have expected as many visitors on the day we were there.
My partner and I waited around an hour for our food, to be told 45 mins in, that they'd run out of one of the main items in one of the meals. By then, leaving to find something else wasn't really an option. A round of orange juice was offered as we continued to wait.
Again, I think they only had one bar man and one chef on that day and were not expecting the groups that came in for lunch.

You must go there. Lovely joyful people. Very clean and food is to die for. There was 5 of us all different orders and everyone said the same. Just lovely

This place is fantastic - owned by locals who are passionate about their town and happy to chat.

This is what I imagine the old Country Pub was like.

Second visit in a month with group of mature ladies. Latest visit was a Christmas lunch. Lovely drive to get there and easy parking. Very relaxed atmosphere with outside seating for sunny days. Friendly and helpful hosts Pat and Jane. Food was lovely and plentiful with extras for a Christmas event. This was a buffet style meal for this occasion but regular menu had lots of reasonably priced courses. Pat makes a good cappuccino . Ideal venue for those doing the great walk and cycle track.

I booked a bunk in the bunk room prior to riding the Paparoa Track. The bunk room was really clean and comfortable and the hosts, Pat and Jane were really friendly and helpful. An added bonus that I didn't expect was a complementary continental breakfast.

As soon as you walk in you are greated by the warmth of the fire, the warmth of the proprietors and staff, and the warmth of the locals. The food is comforting and delicious, and the Peckhams Cider on tap is moreish. Highly recommend for when you return after completing the Paparoa Great Walk.

Shared facilities were spotless. Great continental breakfast, which we all commented on by lunchtime still weren't hungry. Great stuff, will have to come back to Blackball.
