came in yesterday for new years and must say I am very impressed with the friendly atmosphere created by the amazing staff last night. The girl at the bar was very friendly and made my night whens she complimented my hair! Then she and the other new girl danced with me as no one else was. could tell they were happy and love working there!!! couldnt help myself but write this review!

Clean and tify atmosphere. Nice staff. Ordered The veggie rosti stack, but I didn’t get anything of the sorts. It was a bowl of vegetables with a lot of oil and nuts. It was nice, but not amazing. Wouldn’t go back again.

The service was quite slow. The first course was good although my wife's fish was overcooked/dry. My wife's second course was not as she asked for it. The ice-cream was not chocolate and there was no fruit and nuts as per the menu description. We were disappointed with our time there which was my birthday celebration dinner. Low number of diners suggesting this is not the place to dine in Matamata

Spent a working week in the hotel, room was small but cozy, bed gave me an excellent sleep, shower had great pressure, over all stay was excellent for a working stay away. Food on the menu..Damm every thing I ate from steak, mussel pot,fish and chips, to the deserts were done professionally and tasted God Damm delicious... The host Harry awesome guy and his team are top notch cooks,servers, bar tenders..thank you Harry for this e perence..

After 11 nights of camping with my 2 active sons... I just didn't have it in me to drive back to Wellington from Coromandel in one day. I did a random Google search for local accommodation whilst we took a break at the Matamata skate park... Horse & Jockey Inn accommodation rates were only $20 more than what we were paying to sleep in our tents. I couldn't resist the temptation of a mattress & good night sleep before our remaining 6 hour drive. We enjoyed our lovely hot showers, changing into fresh clothes and jumping into white sheets. The highlight was our pork rib meals at their restaurant downstairs. They were absolutely delicious and our servings were so generous that we took takeaway boxes back to our room... had ribs for our late night snack, for breakfast, and we kept the rest for our schnauzer back home in Wellington. The staff seemed to go out of their way to make us feel respected. I highly recommend Horse and Jockey Inn Matamata. We will definitely stay there next time we're on a road trip up north.

I gave this venue only one star two weeks ago however I need to review that given the response of the owner and staff, who when we went to quiz last week, were very apologetic for the experience I/we had had. Not only did they apologise for what we experienced but they offered us a complementary drink and a free meal this week as we had already eaten before attending quiz last week. The response was definitely unexpected and was very much appreciated by us all. Thank you. Also I must say a big thumbs up for the new technology format for quiz. Went to the H&J for quiz night - as a team we decided that we would support them by eating there given that lock down has been tough on businesses. I had to send my mussels back as several of them were not open, two of my friends found their respective meals disappointing and were offered complementary desserts. An apology was offered [thank you] I suggested that another option would be good from there on the service was close to non-existant and what there was was extremely perfunctory. I asked for another beer which didn't turn up. So all in all I would have to say Great Quiz Night, abysmal customer service and having had a career in hospitality I know what good service looks and feels like. Tonight was not it. Our group has decided that we will do quiz and have a drink but we will not eat at the H&J again. Sadly the overall experience means I could not recommend eating here but do go and enjoy the quiz Matt and Sarah are great.

Best ribs ever. Surf and turf is amazing. It had king prawns and fresh scallops plus a prawn sauce on the side that was really good. The chips are by far the best I've had and the included salad bar is really really good. The service was actually worth leaving a tip for. She was both helpful and effective. Don't miss this place. The food and service are an exceptionally pleasant surprise. Good work guys...you deserve to be the top spot to eat In Matamata. We will definitely be back with family 😊

We happened to randomly find this place on our drive back from Wellington to our home in Waihi for some dinner and boy are we glad we did. For a 'pub meal', the food was outstanding!! couldn't fault any of it. My partner had a creamy chicken pasta and I had a stuffed chicken bacon dish...both absolutely delicious and hot when served. The portion size was very generous and well priced. The staff were so friendly nothing was too much trouble. Thanks H&J Inn we will definitely make the journey from Waihi to you again.

Went to Horse and Jockey in Matamata for lunch last week. Went with our friends the meals were AMAZING enough of it and great service.Would certainly recommend this place. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Room was neat,clean and tidy however after getting someone to co.e and fix the light in the ensuite it went out again at 2am. No air-conditioning in a very small room and was advised kitchen at end of accommodation but no utensils to cook or eat with except for about 20 plastic forks, 1 cereal bowl, 3 coffee mugs and 1 cup. There was a microwave and toasted sandwich maker but nothing to make anything with or eat anything off. Wont be staying again.

We phoned ahead and were greeted by a lovely receptionist. We stayed overnight at the Horse & Jockey Inn on our way home. The room was well appointed with good shower & clean comfortable beds. We arrived a little after 8pm and couldn't get a meal as the kitchen was closed, but we discovered a lovely friendly Indian Restaurant just around the corner. We couldn't get the complimentary breakfast here either because the dining area didn't open until 8am. My husband decided we have our breakfast at Burger King (yuk) ... next time I'll take my own superfood smoothie mix.

Rooms were clean and tidy and the food was pretty fab. The WIFI didn't reach our room though which was disappointing and one of the power outlets didn't work. Instructions for the heater in the room would be helpful too, and perhaps some soap for the basin. Overall cheap and cheerful.

Stayed here whilst touring hobbiton, cosy little manor inn. Cheers to the cleaners for keeping the room clean and no dust one of the cleanest rooms we have stayed in. Went and had dinner and pudding. Brownie is a SOLID 10/10

Good location of the pub, car park, WiFi and toilets available. Very nice outdoor area with a billiards table. Wheelchair people are welcome too. We had accommodation and dinner here, the food was delicious. The queen room is wide with a double comfortable bed, sharing bathroom and kitchen. I will mention this place is tidy, clean and quiet, very good to stay overnight when you travel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I am impressed with the pub decorations.

This place gets nothing but the highest review from me. Not only were the fish 'n chips at the pub scrumptious, but the inn was a really cute and comfy place to stay and the bathrooms were super clean. However, what really sets this place apart is their willingness to go above and beyond to help an idiotic guest who managed to drop her night guard out the bathroom window onto the roof. You guys are AWESOME! I will never forget this both for the hilarity of the story and how friendly and stupendously accommodating you were!

We had an average experience here. One person wasn't served at all and they had to cook her a meal when most others had finished. One asked for something to be held back but it was put on the food anyway, and one ordered chicken and avocado and it was served without avocado. That's just our end of the table. Very average and the prices were up there. Service was friendly but food came out slow. In the end, we were part of a group that booked locally, so we definitely will not go back there ourselves. [update] the guest who got her meal last had it rushed out - result was under-cooked (pork) ribs and a queasy 24 hours followed. To go on about it even more would seem to be vengeful - suffice to say they either had a very bad day or they simply shouldn't be in the business of serving food. We were the only table eating - the kitchen would not have been rushed. (Only people eating there may have been a hint, in hindsight)

We had lunch here today on our way home from te aroha. We were looked after by Rachel our waitres . She made us feel so welcome and took care of everything we needed during our meals. She even stopped to help us with an inquiry we had regarding where they sourced an item on their menu that isnt available in supermarket . I always find if the service is not good in a place, that impacts on the food. So Rachel, thank you so much for being so very good at your job. As for the food, everything we ordered came out quickly, and all cooked to a very high standard. Rachel offered us take away containers as she could see we were struggling with the amount of food. Great portion sizes! So thank you Horse and Jockey. We used to be regulars and stopped coming as we didnt like the staff or menu. After this visit, we definitely will be back. Keep up the good work :)

Pretty disappointed with our evening out. My sons fish was burnt and very few chips on his plate. Cider that was ordered 3 times never arrived.. Don’t be fooled with the entertainment book voucher as we were, anything for $36 is not viable with the voucher. Hence why the ‘better’ Meals are priced $36 and the voucher is up to $35. Learn from our mistake!

Our first visit. Very impressed. Varied menu, well prepared and presented food. Good wine list and fun cocktails. Non alcoholic available. Good toilet facilities. Easy parking at the front. I was able to change the vegetables with my fish to those I preferred. Good service. Altogether a good place to go.

Great menu. Delicious potato rostis'. Very friendly staff. Good selection of drinks. Location is a super plus. Favourite part was the large sun drenched courtyard. Comfortable. Pool tables available. Very smoker friendly - which is a top priority for me and is unfortunately becoming more and more rare. The lack of including good social/dining areas for smokers is frustrating to me as we are paying customers too! Well done Horse and Jockey - I will be back for sure. Also wouldn't mind checking out the accommodation at some point.

Restraunt and bar area looks nice enough, haven't eaten there so can't say what the food is like. I'm in a single room and sharing a bathroom, for what i paid for it's perfectly fine, nothing flashy, it's plain but it's just a place to sleep which is all I wanted! Clean, affordable, and good location.

We stayed there over a year ago and I can still remember to today. We traveled from Houston when we were experiencing the Hurricane back home. The people were genuine! Rooms were clean. Love that it was centrally locates that we could walk to the center of town and the food was delicious. Why does the US have to be so far away. I would move here.

I have had one of the best meals I've ever had here ... but unfortunately also at least 2 of the worst. Friendly staff, nice fire in the winter, pool table, and outdoor area. Perhaps just needs some consistency with their service and meals ... a little overpriced for the quality of the meals also, hence I haven't been back here for a meal in a while ... a drink and a game of pool, then we go somewhere else to eat.

I risk overwhelming this place with customers if I get too carried away so I'll keep it understated, like the place itself. I've stayed in many places in Matamata. I'll come back here. That meal was awesome. Surf and turf. Nice quiet atmosphere after a hard day of work and another one tomorrow. Room is very simple, got one with a private bathroom, but will just go the shared bathroom next time as they are spotless, and I'm a germ-a-phobe. Note: my room is not suitable for the previous girlfriend that requires a spacious romantic boudoir, but it's perfect for a one night stay. I'll be back for more.

Wife and I stayed at the Inn for one night. I think it's an average place to stay for the following reasons:- 1. Location is strategic as it is at the city centre of Matamata. You can walk to shops and eateries nearby. It's also very close to the i-Site where the bus picks you up to go to Hobbiton. 2. Staff's attitude is so-so. No offer to help us with our bags. They were rather busy with the Pub as I think they also act as waiter/waitresses there. 3. You gotta check in by 9pm I think because when the pub closes, the inn closes. Check out time is rather early at 10am. 4. Place is spartan. Don't expect amenities such as a kettle, cups etc. We had the one with the en suite. They gave us a bar of soap each, but no shampoo. 5. I went out at around 8am in the morning. I couldnt get back in because the code they gave me was incorrect, despite me trying many times. My wife had to come down to open the door for me. There was no one around at that time of the hour. Might be a reasonably priced place to stay but bear in mind the drawbacks above.

Very hospitable. Spent an afternoon at horse and jockey for my wife's 40th. Lotsa plates of seafood and snacks then very generous helpings in the main meal. Loved the chicken and bacon on the menu. They even had activity packs for the kids. Thanks.
