We stayed for a night, well maintained!
Perfect location to tarn or summit. 1.5-2.5 hrs from car park to the hut.
D.
We just did a day walk up to the tane. Took 1.5hrs from the carpark to the hut. We aren't very fit at all. Took about 10min less to get down (not much grip on shoes so went carefully). Track is mostly all on boardwalk so can do it without getting wet feet. Went 1/8/21. Weather said cloud around mid day and was accurate, but a local said often it stays for half an hour then will clear again. After the tane we continued to Henry peak. Great 360° views of the sea and ruapehu too. A number of people walking up to the hut with young children. So a good walk for all

There are 2 separate bedrooms in the hut with each 8 bunks. The one pass through kitchen is warmer
**Don’t keep your food un tied in kitchen, out oak bag and instant noodle bag were bitten by rat at night. Keep your food hung or well packed in backpack
The hut is very clean and has sufficient logs. Toilet are very clean. A home like place in the windy days
Above average!

Great little hut which is very popular for both day hikers and people doing multi day hikes. Great view of Mt Egmont 5 mins further up from the hut. Gentle reminder for people visiting this hut -those 2 x 200L drums outside the hut are for ash only, please DO NOT put rubbish in them (same rule applies really, take your own rubbish out!)

Really cozy and very well maintained, and the view is amazing! It's only about 15 minutes away from the Pouakai tarns. Had a nice sleep in September. The fireplace works well and there was more than enough firewood for us to use in the shed next to the hut. There were also candles but they ran out. The toilets are very good as well.
N.
Pleasant hike, although all up hill.... till u come down 😎 Definitely better for young legs rather than old, but easily doable in the 2.5hrs predicted.
Track is well maintained. Views on a fine day are magnificent. Bring a camera.👍

Another well equipped hut on the Pouakai circuit. Once again, plenty of bench space, large tables and a great fireplace. No solar lights however. There are two bunk rooms which sleep about 8 each. One is out the front and would give great views to the coast on a clear day, whilst the other is next to the main room and fireplace and so is a bit warmer.
We had a rather wet and cloudy time here but did get to see a few peeks of the coast from time to time.

Amazing view of mt Taranaki just 10 minutes away, 20m to reach the famous lake lookout!
The hut is great, you can make the fire but is still really cold in winter/spring, there are no blankets, be prepared!
J.
Nice hut with lovely views on a fine day. Make sure you visit the Pouakai Tarns when you’re here for magic views of Mt Taranaki/Egmont on a good day
P.
Very nice hut with running drinking water, a fireplace, plenty of beds. Doc guys looking after it were very helpful while we sheltered from the horrible weather outside. Go back up to the junction at sunset for a beautiful view of Mt. Taranaki.

It’s a little bit pity that we did not see the reflection of Mt Taranaki, but we were still grateful for the wonderful weather. The Pouakai hut is awesome, and the scenery was spectacular !
C.
Amazing views. Well kept with 2 clean toilets (no toilet paper), heating, mattresses and running water (boil or filter before drinking). Some wildlife can be noisy under the hut at night though.
About 20 mins walk to the tarns for view of Taranaki.
S.
Great hut and trails to it. The Tarns are only a quick 15 minute walk. So to catch a sunset or sunrise for some photography makes it super simple.
p.
Great spot to knuckle down after a long days hike - you need to have either a hut pass or a ticket for each adult or youth who stays here (prebuy at a doc or isite - check DOC website for details). Views are great from porch, however v gusty. Back room maybe more sheltered than front. Drop loos only. Water available but may require boiling. No gas or cooking fuel here - only fuel provided for stove fire. Warden present when i visited. Not many bunks and gets busy early so always full in high season.

16 bunk backcountry hut - 2hrs walk from Mangorie car park/5-7hrs walk from North Egmont visitor centre. Basic hut with toilets, water, mattresses, wood burner and sinks. First come first serve basis so gets really full during holidays (dec-jan) Best is to arrive early. Plateau situated 5 mins from hut for great sunset on the mountain, Puakai tarn (lake) 15 mins for sunrise mirror photos and great walk to the Puakai summit 1-1.5 hrs from the hut. Great spot for experiencing Mount Taranaki.
F.
Really great trail up here! The DOC in New Zealand are the best I've ever experienced. Steps the whole way up, so well laid out! The hut itself is basic, but exactly what you need for a night!
M.
Walking up the Mangorei track towards the hut. The hut is visible in the top left of the image. A clean well serviced hut, likely picturesque in winter when snowing. A beautiful walk.
T.
A Great Hut with excellent well kept facilities. The hike in is around 1.5 hours of uphill climbing.
K.
A real work out. 1000's of stairs but worth the effort. Stunning views and another 15min and you get to the Tarns with amazing reflections of Mt Taranaki.
N.
Nice serviced hut in Taranaki Park. Heaps of firewood. Our DOC warden Step was really cool and knowledgeable. Thanks DOC for maintaining this hut!
J.
Torturous hike 2.5 hrs up, not for the unfit. 10 mins more from the hut to view the magnificent Mt. Taranaki.
F.
Very beatiful track, you just need to have luck with the weather...
big parking space with toilets available
D.
It took 2 hr 15mins, and 5 more minutes to the top, easy to climb, prepare your clothes that can be cold upside
B.
Nice hut with fire place and 16 bunk beds. Fireplace and woodshed for the cold nights.
w.
Like all our Hut's on My Taranaki absolutely beautiful and please respect them for future hikers.
W.
A bit hard to get there. lol. You need 3 to go there and more 2 hours toget down to Mongorei starter point.
p.
Great place to stop for the night or just a quick rest.

(Translated) Very good, in the middle of the mountain so that the pilgrims have rest to continue the march, it has a fireplace, firewood, water, and room with mattresses to spend the night, it is necessary to take everything for the stay.

Muy bueno, en plena montaña para que los peregrinos tengan descanzo para seguir la marcha, tiene chimenea, leña, agua, y habitación con colchonetas para pasar la noche, es necesario llevar todo para la estancia.
