Called in for lunch and was blown away by the friendly service from Sharon and fantastic food. Had the roast lamb with root veges peas gravy and mint sauce. Delicious. Highly recommend
O.
Under service atm (I don't know for what) they have scaffolding all up the hotel reception entrance side*not blocking the entrance* but I'm sure when they finish and I stay again, I will give them the other 2 stars. Reception is nice and straight forward. Food is yummy. Bar is a little expensive but where else isn't? They have gambling slots which is a nice mix. Rooms are always beautiful and clean. I'm fortunate enough to have a room far away for the workers on the scaffolding. They have 2 smoking areas. A balcony and past the money machines. Nice place
S.
Hotel currently been upgraded with earthquake strengthening. Staff were friendly and helpful, had nice meal at the restaurant.
A.
Historic building showing her age. Undergoing maintenance at the moment. Was a good training venue, catering was great and lovely staff.
N.
I enjoyed it there alot, the staff where all friendly and welcoming and there food mmm to die for. Definitely going back
C.
Excellent meals and very good friendly staff
C.
Lovely staff ,great food comfortable bar clean tidy😁😁😁
G.
Good bar, clean rooms, oldest lift in NZ!! Loved it!!
d.
Very friendly and helpful staff! Unfortunately we could hear what everyone else was doing in their rooms......... bit of a spruce up and this place will be amazing! Highly recommend the meals, bloody good feed
N.
Spur of the moment choice. Didn't disappoint. Great up dated room. Nice bar and meals were excellent, especially breakfast. Would recommend.
I.
Undertaking earthquake strengthing works, room was clean and tidy but old very expensive for what it was. Looking nothing like the online photos.
P.
Great location, clean and currently under renovations. Sure if I came once the works were done it'd be a 5 👍
S.
So far so good. The lady in the bar, restaurant is amazing, she's really on to it. Great customer service, she's the perfect person for the job. Room looks clean. It has full bathroom and tea, coffee facilities. I'm here with work for a few days. Eating fish salad and chips at the moment. Only grip would be it comes with mayonnaise and not tartare sauce. Beer is expensive but better off buying a jug as a pint was $9
S.
Great service from the staff meal was well presented and up to the usual standard. The only thing I found was that for a man the main was on a plate that I would have thought was for an entrée. I would recommend a meal here with the happy staff 😊
S.
My sister stayed at the Grosvenor and we decided to dine in the restaurant. The food was very good. We had the roast lamb, the pork bao buns and my great niece had the kids chicken nuggets. It was very reasonably priced. The two ladies that served us were lovely and it was a good place to be on a cold night! Thank you! 👍😁
B.
Excellent historic hotel being renovated. Our room had been recently renovated, new bathroom, quality comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast and friendly staff. Great value for money and central city location.
R.
Clean large upgraded room and centrally located. Unfortunately room lighting was inadequate and wifi was too poor to be useful. Hotel reception was friendly but on arrival the bar person was unwelcoming so I didn't try the hotel meals.
J.
Nice homemade mince and bacon pie for lunch. Friendly waitress who was very busy! Her name could have been Sharon? She did well.
B.
Nice room, would have been nice to have heater on when we walked in, but didnt take too long to heat up. A bit annoying to be woken at 7.30am with builders working, thats a bit early
J.
First we had a little mix up with the rooms but after we said about it they fixed it and gave us a beautiful, very big room with a nice view. Staff was very friendly and when we checked out they gave me a little thank you note that the manager had written in Finnish (I'm from Finland). That was absolutely lovely and such a nice thing to do from them.
A.
Went to the restaurant here and it was OK. They had no vegan options, but they adapted one of their dishes and it was pretty good! Would love to see a vegan option in their menu in the future to have more inclusive catering.
Edit: They had vegetarian options as the reply suggests, but nothing vegan. The salad had Feta which is dairy, which is not vegan. The halloumi in the halloumi salad is not vegan either. Of course the lasagna would have cheese too, which makes it not vegan eithwr. Seems they do not even understand what the word "Vegan" means.
S.
It is an ancient motel in the heart of Timaru. Rooms look renovated and face uplifted recently. It has a pub/restaurant and they cook good food, had the rib eye steak, was wonderful. A local taxi driver mentioned the Queen of England had a stay at the Gros enor while visiting Timaru, years back.
Rates are modest, starting from 130 NZ$ in the off season. Many attractions of Timaru are walking distance from here.
R.
I went here for a Maori Land meeting recently. A few years back I joined the elderly for an all you can eat smorgasbord. These were yummy and affordable at $25.00 per person. Grosvenor car park is across the road. The Garden Hotel on Marshlands Road in Christchurch has great value though a little expensive and food is not nearly as good. My family say I am to picky. I love food and food should taste great. Agree this is why you keep going back. Lecren Street Tavern Restaurant used to be Richard Pierce has food that is reasonably priced and some things on the menu are very cheap. Lambs Fry and Bacon with Mashed potatoes. Now this is a treat at $10.00 a plate and $6.00 for a tall glass of Beer yummy. $15.00 for crumb Hoki or battered with golden fries and salad. Yes it is a restaurant and you pay bar prices.
A.
Good place to have a break and good place to spend the night
S.
The room was lovely ..meals were 5+ ..had the seafood chowder .taste was the best..had the gurnard and chips an salad..more than I could eat...service was excellent even though they were run off there feet..thanks for a lovely stay..we will be back.
L.
Good access and quiet place. Building looks bit old but still looks good. Room was alright. I enjoyed my staying.
P.
Nice location and the rooms are pretty clean (little bit of mould here and there), but mostly the room needs to be brought up to date. The shower pressure is too strong - you have to deflect the water to be able to rinse your face! There's also light leakage around the main door and the hall lights stay on all night, and it's pretty noisey inside the rooms from activities elsewhere in the hotel.
P.
Went on Easter Monday . The lady on bar was excellent. Had a great roast and a couple of drinks. Will definitely be back
R.
The hotel is surprisingly good and the rooms comfortable with an odd mix of old and new. The bar is nice but the food is average. The chowder had a burnt taste through it so I would avoid that. Cheap and cheery I'd say.
P.
Ideal location, free parking, great food and well stocked bar. A large, historic hotel which has been restored some time ago. Our room was comfortable and met our needs, but, as with much of the hotel we saw, is in need of another restoration. We did book another night later in our trip but had to change our plans. Would certainly stay again if just for the food.
M.
Great value accommodation. My room was clean and modern, with a nice bathroom. Had a couple of drinks in the bar and had a meal in the restaurant; was very nice.
E.
The rooms are extremely cheap. I don't know why people expect a 5 star hotel. Me and my boyfriend stayed here and when we arrived the owner was lovely and a chat to us even asked of we were fed. The rooms are clean and tidy , with all usual hotel tea/coffee. I find it hard to believe anyone would break into a hotel room just to steal a hard drive and nothing else ... (someone else's review) You get what you pay for, even more.
M.
Stayed here for one night, but easily could have enjoyed a few nights at this hotel. We were upgraded to a huge room with a large bathroom. The room was very clean and had a fun vibe, decor-wise. The only negative was that the room was quite cold (even though it wasn't particularly cold outside) and there appeared to be no heater for the room, only a/c. Additionally, it seemed like the one-way mirror between the bedroom and bathroom may have been installed backwards, as we were able to clearly see into the bathroom from the sitting area, but not the other way around. Really, just an odd detail.
S.
Good food great prices
E.
I really enjoyed this place. Didn't seem like much when walking into the lobby but soon found out that the rooms are large and have a neat retro vibe. The best part about this place was the food in the restaurant downstairs. You wouldn't expect it but we ate some fantastic meals here!
B.
Old hotel that has had a bit of a facelift throughout. Does still have that old hotel smell in rooms and corridors. Large rooms with recently updated bathroom. Our bed was made up of 2 single beds but was comfortable enough. Location was good close to the main strip of cafes and shops. Pub downstairs was good value for money with large hearty meals. Overall would stay again to stick to a tight budget.
E.
The outside of the hotel needs a bit of work but the inside is gorgeous. The restaurant makes an amazing breakfast. The room was a bit of a let down as it was not what was advertised but otherwise still a nice room. The hotel is trying to be environmentally friendly by having two separate bins one for recycling. The staff are friendly. The hotel is very centralised which is fantastic for walking from place to place.
A.
If you're looking for a big city luxury hotel with a bunch of amenities this isn't your hotel. But, if you're looking for a tidy place to stay that is convenient to the business district and or sights and sounds of Timaru like Stafford St and Caroline Bay this is a great place to stay. It's neat tidy and charming. The lifts are the old grate style and aren't made for many people or a lot of bags but are very adequate. Service is friendly and there is a restaurant on site. Some of the bathrooms are a bit dated (80s lino) but are very clean. Overall a good place to stay if you need a room in town.
R.
This was a great place to stay. Staff encountered were all fabulous. Room was clean and acceptable.
Can drink and dine downstairs.
My only suggestion is that they might want to consider lowering their prices a little Felt that they were a tad over the top. My motto would be that it's better to have bums on seats than a half empty hotel.
Stsrted drinking downstairs but found prices a little excessive so moved on to another establishment in Timaru.
C.
I visited Grosvernor at least once a month due to business trips in the past three months. Overall experience is good for a small hotel :) Rooms vary depends on the price. Highly recommend superior rooms/ king suite room if your budget permits. Thank you.
A.
Nice meal & good service. Not dark dingy but light and bright with great atmosphere.
L.
Best hotel kitchen in Timaru. Great wait staff. Mince and bacon pie for lunch, you're onto a winner.
S.
Grand building in a great location, room was huge but we were in the Queen room, which we thought related to the size and amenities but it was actually the room Queen Elizabeth the second used in her visit to New Zealand. Very friendly and helpful receptionist, quirky artwork, copies of Banksy and Mondrian, overall highly recommended.
S.
In this day and age its refreshing to find somewhere that lets you smoke inside, at least thats what I assume to be the case by the pernicious smell of old tobacco in all the rooms.
Anyway, smoking a cigarette out the window I couldn't help but admire the beauty of the this old building. Externally that is.
The lift was cool
M.
Bit tired generally and outdated with old fashioned self operated but functional lift. Room clean. Bed very comfy, large, plenty of pillows. Parking in car park opposite side of the street.
K.
Suited our needs. Parking across the road from hotel. Friendly staff. Big room (Queen Suite). Situated just off the main drag. Would stay again.
G.
Loved the atmosphere.absorb the history. Great dinner.awsome bar. Glad I stayed their
E.
Our room was very nice with a lovely comfortable king-sized bed.It was room 216 and I would certainly stay again.
The stairs need updating but that's the only negative comment. It was in a very good position.
e.
Whole place has had a bit of a facelift with some Mondrian style panels and posters... and a few murals here and there... loved the old style lift... room was a bit stuffy... one small window... TV was good... no fridge... our room overlooked yard... woken up by the recycling truck.... bathroom was was very retro... only because it was the original with a slot for used razor blades... no bedside lamps... down lighting from ceiling ... comfortable bed though and well cleaned
J.
I moved here because the motel I was staying at was freezing....My room was spotless, beautiful, sea views huge ensuite and warm. The lunch and evening meals were very good but the friendliness of the staff made the stay a delight. I will definitely book here for my next trip
J.
We stayed 2 nights at Grosvenor during achool holidays. The accommodations were excellent, beautifully presented building lovingly restored. Staff are friendly and polite and quick to suggest plenty of local Activites to entertain. The downstairs bar is cozy and inviting amd perfect for a meal or nighrcap. The rooms are large, well heated and comfortable. We had a fantastic time and would recomend to anyone!
J.
Food is top knotch although being a smaller person I found the meals a little on the large side and not being able to finish them. Slightly smaller portions would be nice.
M.
The room was nice, but a bit dated, the bathrooms definitely an update. The restaurant was lovely & the breakfast was cheap & yum. The staff were well meaning but seemed to be distracted when we asked for help.
J.
Great staff, awesome place to eat. Gluten free options available, definitely be going back.
R.
Totally adequate accommodation - comfy bed and pillows. Bathroom was poky but had everything I needed.
Only complaint was the noisy neighbours who kept me awake all night!
J.
Charging for credit card always spoils the experience.
J.
Does were really squeaky, only one PowerPoint in the room on the opposite side meaning I had to get out of bed to answer the phone when it's on charge, had blood all over my towel. Qwerky artwork, certainly doesn't fit the heritage of the building. Found the doors between the hallway and the stairwell really hard to open. Beds appear to be "well used", may need new mattresses. Otherwise my stay was good.
B.
I enjoyed my stay. My room was warm and comfortable and the staff were welcoming and friendly. It's one of those places I would like to return to.
M.
New menu, over priced and rather average. I had the southern fried chicken burger, best thing I can say was that we had the full attention of the staff as the restaurant was empty..
N.
I went there to attend a day course. The lobby was peaceful and quiet. The meeting room was spacious with good furniture, plenty of light and room. Overall a good experience.
L.
My wife and I travel frequently. We have stayed in many hostels and hotels. We booked a room at The Grosvenor in Timaru New Zealand for nine days. Not only are all the staff members friendly and accommodating, but the room we are staying in is the most spacious and the most comfortable we have ever stayed in anywhere, in Australia or overseas. The room also has an ensuite. To top it all we slept in an absolutely comfortable bed. We will be sorry to leave this hotel. We very highly recommend The Grosvenor without any reservations.
D.
Value for money. Clean and tidy. Elevator is something to see, a step back in time.
M.
Timaru Bronz had their monthly club Sunday lunch there. All meals were only $15 and for $20 You got a substantial meal and dessert which on this occasion was apple pie with cream and icecream. Thoroughly recommend.
m.
Cheeky wee number this place. Really nice apple pudding. And the lamb, definitely something to write home about.
Oh. I forgot. They have tui......on tap!
J.
Can it get better? Awesome food, awesome price. $12 gets you a perfect sized lunch and incredible food & service. I recommend the cajun steak salad...wow
S.
Really affordable place to stay. Helpful friendly staff on reception and in the restaurant. Food was yum. Not good if your a light sleeper.
A.
Food is exceptional great price for meals very tasty excellent service definitely recommended
T.
The tooms were adequate for purpose. Handy having a bar and restaurant onsite. Rooms are dated but in line for what you pay given its location and the age of the building. Stayed in a single budget room.
J.
I love this place we come down from christchurch for work alot of time. Start at all random times. And u get a good sleep not alot of noise.
The food is awesome. One the best is lamb shanks. Dont just get one as its a tease.
S.
Bargain priced room but clean and serviceable, a little stuffy. The food was really good and very cheap, friendly service. Centrally located in a really nice town.
I.
Great place to stop over- awesome meals & staff plus service A+++ !!
P.
We let them know I was recovering from a broken ankle. They gave us the handicapped accessible room and it was really easy for me to shower and get around in the room.
J.
Nice place to stay - clean, comfy big bed and spacious rooms. Friendly bar staff. Good location.
P.
A nice friendly place with good meals at a reasonable price that hasn't got a jukebox in the corner killing conversation will friendly staff. Close to town centre off the main street. No doubt will be going there again in the future
A.
Tidy, nice and quiet. Handy to all amenities. I recommend this place. Thumbs up

Great that I could check in after 10pm but compared to a few other hotels we stayed at it was a bit expensive for what we got
M.

(Translated) The hotel rooms are very different. There are newer ones, but small ones, and there are big ones - but a little older. We had no complaints, except that the windows overlooked the neighboring ones, so without a view :)
Keep in mind that there is a clock on the town hall that beats loudly; when booking, ask for a quiet number.
(Original)

(Translated) The bathrooms are about 30 years old but clean. The rooms have already been modernized and you get free WiFi. It is recommended for young couples looking for cheap accommodation. Higher quality than any youth hostel, but at the same price. Good location.

Gute Lage.
