Reviews of Hunua Ranges Regional Park

Just a short drive from Auckland, this hidden gem is perfect for a peaceful nature escape. The sound of rushing water and the lush greenery make it an unforgettable spot to relax and reconnect with nature.
Must visit place. Although the big walk is under construction but still worth a visit.

One of the most interesting, exciting, and beautiful places to visit features a dam, a campground, diverse bird species, a suspension loop bridge, and excellent hiking trails. The dam offers stunning views and serves as a striking landmark within the area. The nearby campground provides a perfect base for outdoor adventures, with facilities that cater to both tent campers and those with RVs.
Bird watchers will be thrilled by the variety of bird species that can be spotted in the area, making it a prime location for birding. The suspension loop bridge not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape but also adds a sense of adventure to the experience. Hikers will find a range of trails suitable for all skill levels, from easy walks to challenging treks that reward with panoramic vistas.
This destination is perfect for those who love nature and outdoor activities, offering something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're there to relax in the campground, explore the trails, or simply take in the natural beauty, it's a place that promises unforgettable memories.

Good walk, good scenery, beautiful waterfall

The three hour walk is pretty good but lacks signs on several junctions.
One path will have lots of uphill steps, the other will have uphill slopes. Take the left path at the first junction to have an easier loop.

Ernies loop track in Hunua ranges is one of my favourite hike total length 14.70 Km took total time including rest 8 hours so make sure you start early as you can and avoid this track if it’s heavily raining because you have to cross the river and to much muddy areas and make sure you have water proof shoes good amount of water and mainly good stamina. Nice views, kauri trees, peace forest, must try i done twice good memories 🙏🏻

Amazing place to enjoy the Mother Nature! You can have 3 hours walk loop track or close view of the water full.
It’s a beautiful day. We just had picnic near the water full.

2.5 - 3 hours nice easy walking track. We enjoyed our walk. The weather was perfect on that day. The car park is small, and super busy during the holidays and on good weather days.

Great place for an outdoors hike! Access to the trails is very easy, and there are two trails with different lengths depending on how much exercise you want (90 minutes or 3 hours). The tracks are also very well maintained, so you can do the hikes even if the ground's wet.

This park offers great walks, great views, and friendly park ranger. There is great signage, maps offered near the car park, rest rooms and a well maintained path.

Great place with good tracks that are suitable for most fitness levels. Make sure you bring water and decent shoes, arriving before noon avoids the crowds and parking is good. Bush canopy provides excellent cover from the sun.

So pretty, gorgeous bush. A range of walks for all levels of fitness. Lots of picnic areas and open spaces. The highlight being the waterfall

Great place for a hike and picnic. Good time with family

Wonderful and easy walk with plenty of look out points. Get some great views of the valley and dam. Family friendly and kids could do the walk with ease. Definitely recommend giving it a go. Can do the main track and the suspension bridge in less than 3 hours.

Easiest waterfall, jus 2mins from carpark

Amazing 3 hours walk. We finished in 3 hours 40 mins including food/ water breaks. Approx 45 kms away from cbd. After the motorway exit, it's mostly 50 and 80 roads. From hunua till the spot, roads get real narrow and curvy, so be careful when you drive.
There are ample of parking spaces but being a popular spot they are mostly full. We had to wait for few mins to get one.
It's a well maintained reserve. Though council mentions 8.3 kms, by the time we finished cossey Massey loop it was close to 11 kms. Go with enough water and food to refresh yourself. There are steep climbs and steps at many places. So average fitness required. Walk upto Cossey dam will take close to 1.5 hours and after that it's mostly downhill. Enough signs to lead you and well maintained tracks.
Great place for taking pics. Beautiful waterfall towards the end of the loop.

What a great hike! Due to all the rains there are some places where the walkway is starting to show signs of potential damages and slides, but it was still fantastic and we had a great walk. There are quite a bit of steps, I would say it requires a medium level of fitness. Enjoy

Easy drive to the park. Lots of parking spaces when I got there at 7.30am. Paths were very leveled and well signed tracks. You won't get lost :) Clean toilets and picnic areas. The falls was absolutely stunning, as well as the dam. Great exercise! Very refreshing!

A great day walking in the Hunua Ranges and along to the Hunua Falls waterfall. Some tracks have hundreds of steps while other tracks are more suited to families. There is a nice picnic area with tables and toilets within walking distance of of the Hunua Falls parking area. Hunua Falls is very popular and the adjacent parking area is often full.
