Reviews of Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve
J.
Wow! We were so surprised by this place. The tunnels are amazing and the views around are just pure wow. A very nice walk and you can discover real gem places. Highly recommended when it's a good weather
G.
The naval base huge guns are gone so only the base is there. It's only a scenic view now.
L.
Lovely lovely place.
At the top, youre able to see all around, you can see the Auckland city, the haebour bridge and other islands.
A.
Hi guys,
A MUST visit with absolutely stunning views. Some of the tunnels and caves are closed and/or under reconstruction but the views are simply stunning. Apart from the views you can find historical military artifacts dating back to WWI & WWII as well as a super cosy beach. This is probably one of the most serene places in Auckland. Check out the picd
J.
If your visiting mount Victoria i would highly recommend checking out North Head as well. This mountain you can actually drive up to the half walk point so its a bit easier if you don't feel like walking. There is even more defensive equipment on sight here, including the ammunition stores, retractable guns and not to forget stunning views! It does get busy here on the weekends so parking does fill up.
N.
This place is amazing! Take a picnic & a blanket cos its getting colder now & enjoy the views & nature
C.
What a view. Both Mt Victoria and North Head... take a picnic basket and spend a few hours up there on a good day... priceless.
B.
Simply stunning and soooo relaxing. Could spend hours there just walking.
Great history bits too !!
A.
One of the must visit place while visiting Devonport. Parking is available at the venue. The view is amazing and its a good walk all the way to the top. Uncover the tunnels to get to secret locations within the area. Learn about the Cannons and the observation point. Bonus - Great place to enjoy the Prada Cup.
D.
It was cold drizzly afternoon, and we managed to make it up there inbetween bouts of lightening strikes. we only just made into the misty bunkers as the downpour hit. The labryinth of dark rough concrete passageways led us to the central gun crypt. voices of the past echoed. a small crack of light showed us the way to freedom - and we ducked out the side entrance to the peaceful green hills and picturesque view.
D.
Loved the tunnels, but wished more were accessible. Fabulous views and a great day outing with plenty of picnic spots and nice spongy grass.
E.
Great Mountain, right by Cheltenham beach. Great views and it even has old war tunnels that you can walk through if you want. Amazing place.
G.
This was an interesting place to visit, unfortunately at the time there were no staff on hand to answer questions. Walking around the old gun emplacements and down underground in the labyrinth of tunnels that provided access between the magazines and guns was a little eerie. The video being played in the theatre gave a good insight into the reason for the guns and how they were manned.
L.
Amazing views of Auckland from Rangitoto to the Sky tower to the Navy Ships. A place of NZ history can be seen here of the defense bunkers used during the war.
Its a nice elevated walk up or around the hills but alternatively you can drive! Surrounded by beautiful beaches and a great range of cafes, bars or local souvenirs nearby this is a place to see!
K.
Lovely panoramic views of Auckland from the top, with lots of spots for photos. Would be a great spot for a picnic. The site is super easy to access as you can drive right up to the top / entrance with free parking.
The tunnels are free to enter, easy to walk through (flat / paved) and there's informative posters throughout explaining the history of the place. Some places are quite dark, but your phone torch is sufficient.
R.
Great citywide views at the top, and around the edges of the mountain are a couple of beaches and various rocks to fish off. Tunnel system is interesting and a lot of history information boards are shown around the place. A great and free location point of interest for tourists and locals alike.
A.
Beautiful views and interesting historical gun emplacements.
A.
Beautiful Scenery. Lovely place. It gets a bit windy, so if you have an infant with you, better add an extra layer of fabric.
S.
Maungauika/North Head has stunning views of Auckland city and the harbour. This Historical hill has a deep history of both pre european Maori occupation and modern day colonial infrastructure. Maungauika has a network of tunnels and gun turrets built as a defense against possible invasion by the Japanese in world war 2. This place is a must visit if in Devonport.
I.
Awesome lookout near Devonport. If you’re visiting Auckland, would definitely recommend to have a look. Free parking on site, short walk up to the lookout. They got tunnels, cannons, everything! Nice and cool, and of course windy. Just yes, awesome views of Auckland CBD and surrounds. Would recommend!
N.
What fun we had, and in the wet weather too, exploring these tunnels! I'd recommend taking a torch so you can feel safe with your footing inside the darkness. It was a rather steep climb up the track... but coming back down we went via the road, which was much quicker and easier (just watch out for upcoming cars). Historic, interesting and fun all at once. Don't forget to watch the video up top in the stone building so you get an overview of North Head then and now.
One family were even having a picnic in one of the bunkers... great idea!
A.
The walk was beautiful. The park was easy to find and offered a great view of Auckland. Quiet and peaceful. Great place for families and kids. Near to shops and great eats. The New World grocery store is huge there and offers many great selections. The shop nearby have the best prices that I have ever seen all over Nee Zealand. I shopped in Auckland and Bay if Islands. Devonport had the best deals for the exact same thing.
Tourist...grab a HOP card from the grocery stores, load it up as you go. If you don’t use your balance within 60 days, they put the money back on the card that you used to purchase the travel credits. It works on bus, trains and ferries. You will save a fortune. It took me 3 weeks to fall out of the tourist traps and learn the low down from the local kids. I am about to leave Auckland now but I still bought a HOP card. It’s $10. One round trip ferry ride to another island and the card pays for itself. As the locals say “sweet as”!
L.
Great view! Nice walk and a soft breeze. Highly recommended, and what separates this volcano from the others around Auckland is the battery installed on it of course.
You get to see some of the remaining guns, the sites where they used to be, and to walk around in the caves/bunkers connected to them. Really interesting.
Show up before the tide draws in though, in order to see the beach pattern created while it is out. When we were there the side came back in around 4-5 pm.
K.
A must to visit. One tunnel has light installed now. Some tunnels are blocked for maintenance. So it pays to call to check if they are open.
S.
Was an awesome afternoon with the partner and children, can't beat racing down those hills on the boxes left by others, just remember leaving them is littering so best to take what you use and pick up what you can on the way back to the vehicle don't let our sites look like a dumping ground for others that may visit
H.
This place is very nice to go for a short walk, beautiful views on the Auckland harbour, skyline and Rangitoto 👍
The remains of the bunkers, underground walkways and guns is a nice distraction during your walk around. Visit a local cafe afterwards for a coffee or tea and your Saturday/ Sunday morning is sorted! 😊
D.
Beautiful place, but the tunnels closed and hordes of happy children missing.
J.
This is a historical place where you can explore and somehow experience the past. The secret passages are still there and accessible for those who want to go around the place for about 30 mins for an adventure and there are 2 other tracks that you can choose from. Whichever path you take will surely make you enjoy the experience.
R.
A wonderful place to explore. Limited parking up the top - park at the bottom and walk is a good idea. Take a torch and explore the tunnels - kids love it, just be careful if the cliffs.
L.
Pukekohe tramping club outing , a great day to a great venue
M.
Sweeping views of the harbor and Auckland CBD, Glimpses into Aucklands wartime past, and an excellent spot for a mid afternoon picnic with the whānau.
North head also hosts one of the explorer medal locations, so get out there... And go get some hot chips from one of the local eateries while you're at it
D.
Love this place. Nice to walk around abc explore the underground cave/establishments. Very well maintained. Good to come here with kids, saw a lot of kids having fun looking at the cannon baller and caves.
J.
Great views of Auckland and the islands! This is maybe the only hilltop in Auckland you can still drive up, making it accessible to all & in any weather!
Interesting tunnels and military history here too.
H.
Hard to beat panoramic views of the city and its harbour. Historic landmark of Auckland. Great place to visit for everybody!
G.
Great place. Great historical significance for all New Zealanders. Excellent views of the harbour and surrounding islands.
A.
Inspirational two hours at Maungauika. A fresh breeze and fluffy clouds intensified the colors of New Zealand. Great views over Rangitoto volcano in the habor and Narrow Neck beach. On Maungauika the military installations of Noth Head belonging to another age are opened for exploration and discovery. Another time of paranoia and fear. The tunnels and their rooms can be walked through and the now non-operational gun emplacements entered. Surrounded by extensive grasslands and bush, the site is a great explore for older children.
S.
A fabulous day spent here walking through tunnels, admiring the magnificent views of the city and the beautiful Waitemata Harbour. Also enjoyed a walk along Cheltenham Beach.
V.
A Wonderful place to spend some time. There are some tunnels and Cannon's if you are interested in historical stuff. It's a place you can enjoy a nicer view of the city of sails.
Also it has a beautiful beach you can have a nice swim in the summer.
R.
Really nice place to visit old tunnes are amazing. Nice peace of history must visit and watch my you tube video about it.
#ww2 #guns
S.
A very nice historical place. Plenty of areas for picnics and kids of all ages enjoy the features.
J.
Terrific 19th century fortified artillery and tunnel network on New Zealand's North Head. Beautiful views, and so peaceful for an inner city location.
D.
Great spot to relax on a sunny day. Bring a picnic, enjoy 360 degree views of Auckland - iconically auckland City and Rangitoto Island. Car parking is available half way up the mountain. Lots of history, with gun placements and tunnels to visit and traverse through - built in the late 1800s for a possible invasion from Russia. After the adventure you can visit the war calm waters of Cheltenham beach or visit one of the many cafes. Only a short ferry ride from the city
s.
Get view all around and nice view of the city! Pretty cool to see an old cannon on the hill.
H.
Very interesting piece of history, fantastic views. Really enjoyable hiking down the Cheltenham beach then up stairs to the North Head and all the way around.
H.
located on a headland at the entrance to Auckland's Harbor, North Head.Auckland was established in 1840 North Head became the site of the first pilot station, for guiding ships into the harbor. In 1878 the area was set aside as a public reserve on the basis that it be given up for defense purposes if required. After less than seven years North Head was indeed taken for defense purposes.
A.
Go on, bike up. Bike all the way up.
The views are worth every drop of sweat.
Y.
Such amazing views, historical defence installations to explore.
Fun for kids, interesting for adults.
B.
Nice place to feel relaxed while seeing the harbor view and just spend the time.
S.
Best view of Mount Rangitoto is possible from here. You can also visit the barracks and tunnel system here. Find out why the gun is called disappearing gun.
N.
Beautiful view, nice place for kids to run and play
H.
Excellent experience, a great walk with amazing views. Can really appreciate the area and the historical value of the mountain a great time here
C.
Greattt place to visit on a sunny day
B.
Great walk to stretch your legs and mega fantastic views
R.
Not bad, good history. Some of the tunnels smell of urine pretty bad. That's not the parks fault of course, but it's off putting.
R.
Spectacular view, wonderfull atmosphere... so nice place to see Auckland global view!
R.
Always nice views to be had of the boats and other activities in the harbour.
J.
A beautiful viewpoint and historical sight. Not too be missed. Especially venturing through the underground bunkers.
d.
Nice secluded beach. Walking track around the headland and WW2 gun positions. Nice on sunny day and good views of city bridge
J.
Great views. Good tracks up and around base but not all open due to stability??
A.
Very cool view of the city (one of the best I think). Has the best preserved bunkers and tunnels in Auckland too.
E.
Awesome place for nice views and afternoon walks. Go there on a sunny day and you won't be disappointed
A.
Beautiful spot for a sunny day, kids will enjoy exploring the tunnels and watching the busy channel. Great views of the city.
T.
Nice walk by the beach with beautiful views.. be prepared to get wet by the tides!
C.
Lovely place for a walk, and one of the best view of Auckland.
V.
So close to CBD yet so isolated from the crowd! Spectacular views of the sky line and of Rangitoto!
C.
Spent 2 hours there with my gf. Had a good time. Always in love with Devonport.
M.
Great views and interesting history. We went paragliding with Wings and Waves.
N.
Okay so this was just part of my final night here sorry about pic quality. Honestly at night time it was kind of spooky to go visit this spot, we found this really cool cat and big cannons on our night walk. An absolutely amazing view of downtown at night.
C.
Fantastic views of Auckland on the site of WWII gun embankments.
L.
Very nice place for family.
M.
Classic spot to visit with the family. Unfortunately they keep closing tunnels and shafts but expected as they are quite hazardous.
M.
Superb walk with outstanding views and fun tunnels
N.
Great spot to watch Prada cup.
C.
Love the stroll around here, it changes all the time. The views are some of the best and the history of the place has something for everyone. Grab an old real estate sign and the kids and let them barrel down the hills. Fun for everyone!
G.
A wonderful reserve, an elevated position with a superb view of harbour and city. Interesting wartime relics: tunnels cannons, lookouts, etc. Well worth a half day visit- highly recommended.
M.
As a Gun Emplacement junkie, this would rate in my top ten.
T.
Lovely spot to take the dog midweek.
D.
The views are lovely.. you can enjoy the city skyline and rangitoto island along with historical war caves.. p.s bring something to eat :)
B.
Stunning views, nice walk up and alot of history
J.
Beautiful mountain, with views of the Auckland Harbour and beyond. Beautiful and picturesque
P.
It’s a visit back in time , you will love and enjoy this place just explore and you would find more than 10 tunnels here
C.
Absolutely positively definently stunning views
A.
Beautiful sunny day to walk at this lovely place
T.
Easy walk, beautiful wild flowers and bush, fantastic views of Devonport waterways and Rangitoto island.
A.
This is a cool place. Tunnels are amazing. There were some areas that were locked. Not sure if there are times when they do open up but otherwise the view out to the Ocean is awesome.
J.
Well worth a look. Wonderful views
杨.
Beautiful and have very nice view on the top of the hill. Worth to go. But the wind are bit strong when standing on the top. Half way to the top have a tunnel for store weapons on century aga. Definitely an historical place. Good for short hiking and exercises.
M.
Great place to take kids, it's a volcanic hill on the entrance to Auckland Harbour, great views, it's an adventure park.
A.
So sad to see more and more tunnels closed. Toilets in good condition which was a pleasant surprise. Views are spectacular and what drives you to walk around full circumference to take it all in

Stunning sunset views of the City of Auckland.
F.
A great place for a walk with lots of Green and Blue sea by the side
S.
Fantastic views. Great walk.

P.
A quiet place with very beautiful view. Easy acces.
M.
Great place to take the kids on the weekend, lots of tunnels, gun emplacements to explore. Take decent shoes as steep/slippery in places. Plenty of coffee/lunch options available in Devonport.
J.
Cool aspect and look out on the surrounding area. Great place to take kids and visitors to Auckland. Tunnels are a great adventure, don't forget your torch.
G.
Great place to visit if you're in Devonport. It's a refreshing and short climb to walk up. The historical sites such as the old bunkers and forts are really interesting to explore. I personally found some of them a bit too dark and scary but that would just be me as I saw many kids running around having fun. Would recommend if you wanna see intact olden day forts
P.
Very interesting it's a shame they don't know cars to go up in morph any further then what you can now
J.
Very fortunate to live in North Shore...!
M.
Amazing views. Relaxing walking around it.
C.
Great educational location, not wheelchair friendly
P.
Great historical place and fantastic views
D.
Beautiful view of the Auckland Harbour
Stepped in history.
C.
Saw off the Volvo Ocean race, great vantage point and fabulous weather
M.
I grew up in this lovely neighbourhood. I had great memories of North Head and returned as an adult to relive my childhood excitement of playing with my buddies around the military tunnels (which are really cool) and turrets. It doesn’t take much for your imagination to bring it to life.
It’s also a great little spot to sit on a picnic rug and enjoy a variety of beautiful views in any direction and just relax. It takes little effort to get up and around it and it’s totally worth it.
I.
Amazing views! Pretty windy, would be perfect with a picnic during a summers day.
B.
Great day out with the Whānau
P.
Great place to explore, drenched in history and has plently of big old guns to look at

A.
Awesome place to get lost for a couple of hours!
J.
Wonderful place to go to for the views and a walk. Even in lousy weather.
E.
Oh, what a place! Round and tall, it towers over Devonport. I definitely recommend spending some quality time with this Maunga. She will never let you down. Plus tunnels!

J.
Awesome place to stop for lunch and close to the artisan cafes and markets at Devonport
g.
Amazing place. New Māori artworks are being displayed in the tunnels. Highly recommended to take the guided tours.
L.
Great day. Started at the wharf and took a leisurely walk up and back. Kids loved the canons but the view is amazing and a history lesson for us all. Take a torch as one of the tunnels is pitch black. Quite eerie but fun and interesting.
y.
Interesting walk around tunnels and bunker
R.
A great place to walk around and look at the city and harbor views.
D.
One of the best places near Auckland to relax and to walk around
D.
Great views of Auckland city and surrounding beaches. Some of the tunnels were closed off so it didn't connect. Short hike to the top of hill and easy.
A.
Great place to visit. Especially in the evenings.
P.
Lovely place! Fantastic awesome scenic view of Devonport, Rangitoto and the city landscape. The history that surrounds it is just as cool. It makes sense that they placed the guns out there. I wonder if they had more guns before.
The walk is easy. The tracks are fairly flat. Not too steep. We visited here during the summer season. So it was really hot. Make sure to apply some sunscreen. Or not. Depends on your preference. They are not much shade on the hill. Expect to be exposed under the sun if it is not a cloudy day. Come prepared with water.
Great historical site. Will definitely visit again. I wonder if you can watch the fireworks here on New Year's eve?
J.
It is beautiful there, just be careful you Dodge the many old condoms. And hold your nose walking past the public toilet both in 2018 and yesterday when I went the toilets have both left an aroma not even fit for the depths of hell walking almost as far to the side of the toilets to escape the smell as possible. It is such a pity such a beautiful area has become so unkept. Showing my father photos he asked why it isnt being taken care of bar the average mowing of lawns and maintenance on the old guns.
F.
Awesome place, full of history.
A.
Amazing piece of history. Great mix of well kept exhibit tunnels and older unused ones make it perfect for exploring and learning about the site. Unlike many of the other forts around the country (the ones in Wellington, for example), this site is incredibly well kept, and definitely worth a visit.
J.
It’s nice to see a bit of Auckland’s history given its relatively modern appearance
A.
Great activity for kids and adults alike. Expect amazing views and lots of fun walking through old tunnels and rooms dug/buried in the stone. I highly recommend a flashlight or at the very least make sure your cellphone light works well.
A.
A really cool place to explore, make sure you bring a torch!
There's a nice walk around the head with a few different pathways. On a nice day you get lovely clear views of Rangitoto from one side and auckland from the other.
The military buildings and tunnels are a great time and very interesting to have a look around in, if not a bit creepy feeling in the dark!
Very green and lush grass make it a great picnic spot and easy parking makes it even better!
Good for a short stroll or a longer time for some exploration.
L.
From here you can see how prosperous the city is!
V.
North Head is a lovely place to wander around. You can look at the Gun Placements and the magnificent views of Auckland. If you are lucky you may meet Daisy, the resident feline of North Head. Well worth taking a picnic.
K.
Beautiful views
D.
Great visit and a cool place!! But BEWARE!!! We stopped as our last stop in New Zealand before heading to the airport so our van was loaded with all our luggage and belongings. We parked in the top car park area and in the hour or so we spent exploring our car was broken into and backpacks were stolen!! A horrible ending to our fabulous time in NZ!!
S.
A nice beach to just sit and talk 😊
N.
Great for walking dogs, beautiful views, interesting history, close to shops. What’s not to like
C.
Best views in Auckland. The tunnels are a bit smelly but so cool in the summer heat. Must see if you haven't been yet
K.
Amazing location, the views are to die for. So much history. My kids love going there, as do I!
J.
My favorite place in devonport, and I find this a better place to go to than Mount Victoria. There's are three walking tracks here with my personal favourite being the coastal track which is relatively quiet and allows you to get close to the sea.
S.
Always a great walk here, especially on a good Auckland day.
S.
Lots of pathways to explore, beautiful view of rangitoto!
K.
Awesome place with some history, good fun exploring the tunnels
S.
A scenic place with big cannons. Can see both city and Rangitoto island from here. A perfect place to spend with friends/family for a sunset 🌇
N.
Pretty amazing place to take the kids. Take a flashlight and explore the caves. Amazing 360 degree views of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangioto Island
A.
Amazing place with rich history a must visit.
A.
Great views and green grass. Be a nice place for some MTB trails... But I doubt that will ever happen
H.
OATH. great for sunsets as well as sun rises. lots to explore including tunnels, tracks, buildings, beaches, rocks. helpful information plaques on the historical aspects of the mountain
J.
Very scenic, peaceful place. Alpes one to self reflect while gazing over breath taking views.
There is fascinating local history on site, if one feels inclined to explore and understand the local past.
A.
A beautiful reserve overlooking the bay. Plenty of paths for walking, as well as the conservatory department "huts" hosting historical videos about the North Head hill. You can see the disappearing gun, used as one of Auckland's main defence against any water attack. You can also find fortresses around the reserve; some are still open explore though most are already sealed.
R.
It's great unless you get locked in after 10pm 🤦
L.
It was a great place to visit the views we're stunning.
A.
Great day out! Adventures through the tunnels were fun and spooky, with fun facts about the place posted throughout. Plus gorgeous views on every side
D.
Every summer i head out there.I always have the family such a adventurous place to go.The outdoors the fresh air .. tunnels to investigate play or hide.hill to slde down take cardboard.Have a picnic sometimes maybe a bit windy.
Good place to walk or run for exercise.
Highly reccomend this place for families and a historic background
T.
Awesome views from yet another landmark. Popular spot for cruise ship spotting as they cruise around the head for the Auckland port disembarkation pier/terminal. The supermodel in the photograph cannot be guaranteed upon your visitation ;-)
Y.
This is a great place to be on a sunny day. Views are awesome from any angle. If you like walking, there are a few tracks around to enjoy 👍😊
J.
Nice view. Had fun going through the tunnels to the battery. Unfortunately there was a stench. Smell of toilet not washed for months in the air.
M.
This reserve is one of the nicest on the shore doesn’t depend what time you go here you always get such an amazing view of Auckland cbd.
G.
A great historic outing, just a pity about the vandalism. Explore the tunnels and have a beautiful walk along the shore. Some of the best views in Auckland.
R.
Worth taking a walk around if you visit Devonport.
J.
Lovely place. Interesting plants and many many middens along the track. Highly recommend.
P.
Lovely place to visit. Beautiful views. Attended a wedding which was a perfect setting with the native birds and the breathtaking backdrop.
N.
.
(03/2016)
historical site
beautiful lookout of different beaches from the top
nicely maintained though the tunnels cannot be accessed anymore and the guns are moved out
will advise to visit on a clear day for enjoying the views
A.
Definitely a place of history you can feel it even if international war never came to new Zealand.. I love walking around here
A.
Great place to explore with kids (bring torches) or for a picnic. Car can still drive up, but cars have to be out before 8pm. One side will always be sheltered from the wind.
R.
Half day well spent here. Learn a lot of WW2 history
M.
Americas Cup, Prada Round Robins today, and the picture shows today, blue sky 15kts? And hot, Perfect viewing spot
