Reviews of Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve
Wow! We were so surprised by this place. The tunnels are amazing and the views around are just pure wow. A very nice walk and you can discover real gem places. Highly recommended when it's a good weather
The naval base huge guns are gone so only the base is there. It's only a scenic view now.
Lovely lovely place.
At the top, youre able to see all around, you can see the Auckland city, the haebour bridge and other islands.
Hi guys,
A MUST visit with absolutely stunning views. Some of the tunnels and caves are closed and/or under reconstruction but the views are simply stunning. Apart from the views you can find historical military artifacts dating back to WWI & WWII as well as a super cosy beach. This is probably one of the most serene places in Auckland. Check out the picd
If your visiting mount Victoria i would highly recommend checking out North Head as well. This mountain you can actually drive up to the half walk point so its a bit easier if you don't feel like walking. There is even more defensive equipment on sight here, including the ammunition stores, retractable guns and not to forget stunning views! It does get busy here on the weekends so parking does fill up.
This place is amazing! Take a picnic & a blanket cos its getting colder now & enjoy the views & nature
What a view. Both Mt Victoria and North Head... take a picnic basket and spend a few hours up there on a good day... priceless.
Simply stunning and soooo relaxing. Could spend hours there just walking.
Great history bits too !!
One of the must visit place while visiting Devonport. Parking is available at the venue. The view is amazing and its a good walk all the way to the top. Uncover the tunnels to get to secret locations within the area. Learn about the Cannons and the observation point. Bonus - Great place to enjoy the Prada Cup.
It was cold drizzly afternoon, and we managed to make it up there inbetween bouts of lightening strikes. we only just made into the misty bunkers as the downpour hit. The labryinth of dark rough concrete passageways led us to the central gun crypt. voices of the past echoed. a small crack of light showed us the way to freedom - and we ducked out the side entrance to the peaceful green hills and picturesque view.
Loved the tunnels, but wished more were accessible. Fabulous views and a great day outing with plenty of picnic spots and nice spongy grass.
Great Mountain, right by Cheltenham beach. Great views and it even has old war tunnels that you can walk through if you want. Amazing place.
This was an interesting place to visit, unfortunately at the time there were no staff on hand to answer questions. Walking around the old gun emplacements and down underground in the labyrinth of tunnels that provided access between the magazines and guns was a little eerie. The video being played in the theatre gave a good insight into the reason for the guns and how they were manned.
Amazing views of Auckland from Rangitoto to the Sky tower to the Navy Ships. A place of NZ history can be seen here of the defense bunkers used during the war.
Its a nice elevated walk up or around the hills but alternatively you can drive! Surrounded by beautiful beaches and a great range of cafes, bars or local souvenirs nearby this is a place to see!
Lovely panoramic views of Auckland from the top, with lots of spots for photos. Would be a great spot for a picnic. The site is super easy to access as you can drive right up to the top / entrance with free parking.
The tunnels are free to enter, easy to walk through (flat / paved) and there's informative posters throughout explaining the history of the place. Some places are quite dark, but your phone torch is sufficient.
Great citywide views at the top, and around the edges of the mountain are a couple of beaches and various rocks to fish off. Tunnel system is interesting and a lot of history information boards are shown around the place. A great and free location point of interest for tourists and locals alike.
Beautiful views and interesting historical gun emplacements.
Beautiful Scenery. Lovely place. It gets a bit windy, so if you have an infant with you, better add an extra layer of fabric.
Maungauika/North Head has stunning views of Auckland city and the harbour. This Historical hill has a deep history of both pre european Maori occupation and modern day colonial infrastructure. Maungauika has a network of tunnels and gun turrets built as a defense against possible invasion by the Japanese in world war 2. This place is a must visit if in Devonport.
Awesome lookout near Devonport. If you’re visiting Auckland, would definitely recommend to have a look. Free parking on site, short walk up to the lookout. They got tunnels, cannons, everything! Nice and cool, and of course windy. Just yes, awesome views of Auckland CBD and surrounds. Would recommend!
What fun we had, and in the wet weather too, exploring these tunnels! I'd recommend taking a torch so you can feel safe with your footing inside the darkness. It was a rather steep climb up the track... but coming back down we went via the road, which was much quicker and easier (just watch out for upcoming cars). Historic, interesting and fun all at once. Don't forget to watch the video up top in the stone building so you get an overview of North Head then and now.
One family were even having a picnic in one of the bunkers... great idea!
The walk was beautiful. The park was easy to find and offered a great view of Auckland. Quiet and peaceful. Great place for families and kids. Near to shops and great eats. The New World grocery store is huge there and offers many great selections. The shop nearby have the best prices that I have ever seen all over Nee Zealand. I shopped in Auckland and Bay if Islands. Devonport had the best deals for the exact same thing.
Tourist...grab a HOP card from the grocery stores, load it up as you go. If you don’t use your balance within 60 days, they put the money back on the card that you used to purchase the travel credits. It works on bus, trains and ferries. You will save a fortune. It took me 3 weeks to fall out of the tourist traps and learn the low down from the local kids. I am about to leave Auckland now but I still bought a HOP card. It’s $10. One round trip ferry ride to another island and the card pays for itself. As the locals say “sweet as”!
Great view! Nice walk and a soft breeze. Highly recommended, and what separates this volcano from the others around Auckland is the battery installed on it of course.
You get to see some of the remaining guns, the sites where they used to be, and to walk around in the caves/bunkers connected to them. Really interesting.
Show up before the tide draws in though, in order to see the beach pattern created while it is out. When we were there the side came back in around 4-5 pm.
A must to visit. One tunnel has light installed now. Some tunnels are blocked for maintenance. So it pays to call to check if they are open.
Was an awesome afternoon with the partner and children, can't beat racing down those hills on the boxes left by others, just remember leaving them is littering so best to take what you use and pick up what you can on the way back to the vehicle don't let our sites look like a dumping ground for others that may visit
This place is very nice to go for a short walk, beautiful views on the Auckland harbour, skyline and Rangitoto 👍
The remains of the bunkers, underground walkways and guns is a nice distraction during your walk around. Visit a local cafe afterwards for a coffee or tea and your Saturday/ Sunday morning is sorted! 😊
Beautiful place, but the tunnels closed and hordes of happy children missing.
This is a historical place where you can explore and somehow experience the past. The secret passages are still there and accessible for those who want to go around the place for about 30 mins for an adventure and there are 2 other tracks that you can choose from. Whichever path you take will surely make you enjoy the experience.
A wonderful place to explore. Limited parking up the top - park at the bottom and walk is a good idea. Take a torch and explore the tunnels - kids love it, just be careful if the cliffs.
Pukekohe tramping club outing , a great day to a great venue
Sweeping views of the harbor and Auckland CBD, Glimpses into Aucklands wartime past, and an excellent spot for a mid afternoon picnic with the whānau.
North head also hosts one of the explorer medal locations, so get out there... And go get some hot chips from one of the local eateries while you're at it
Love this place. Nice to walk around abc explore the underground cave/establishments. Very well maintained. Good to come here with kids, saw a lot of kids having fun looking at the cannon baller and caves.
Great views of Auckland and the islands! This is maybe the only hilltop in Auckland you can still drive up, making it accessible to all & in any weather!
Interesting tunnels and military history here too.
Hard to beat panoramic views of the city and its harbour. Historic landmark of Auckland. Great place to visit for everybody!
Great place. Great historical significance for all New Zealanders. Excellent views of the harbour and surrounding islands.
Inspirational two hours at Maungauika. A fresh breeze and fluffy clouds intensified the colors of New Zealand. Great views over Rangitoto volcano in the habor and Narrow Neck beach. On Maungauika the military installations of Noth Head belonging to another age are opened for exploration and discovery. Another time of paranoia and fear. The tunnels and their rooms can be walked through and the now non-operational gun emplacements entered. Surrounded by extensive grasslands and bush, the site is a great explore for older children.
A fabulous day spent here walking through tunnels, admiring the magnificent views of the city and the beautiful Waitemata Harbour. Also enjoyed a walk along Cheltenham Beach.
A Wonderful place to spend some time. There are some tunnels and Cannon's if you are interested in historical stuff. It's a place you can enjoy a nicer view of the city of sails.
Also it has a beautiful beach you can have a nice swim in the summer.
Really nice place to visit old tunnes are amazing. Nice peace of history must visit and watch my you tube video about it.
#ww2 #guns
A very nice historical place. Plenty of areas for picnics and kids of all ages enjoy the features.
Terrific 19th century fortified artillery and tunnel network on New Zealand's North Head. Beautiful views, and so peaceful for an inner city location.
Great spot to relax on a sunny day. Bring a picnic, enjoy 360 degree views of Auckland - iconically auckland City and Rangitoto Island. Car parking is available half way up the mountain. Lots of history, with gun placements and tunnels to visit and traverse through - built in the late 1800s for a possible invasion from Russia. After the adventure you can visit the war calm waters of Cheltenham beach or visit one of the many cafes. Only a short ferry ride from the city
Get view all around and nice view of the city! Pretty cool to see an old cannon on the hill.
Very interesting piece of history, fantastic views. Really enjoyable hiking down the Cheltenham beach then up stairs to the North Head and all the way around.
located on a headland at the entrance to Auckland's Harbor, North Head.Auckland was established in 1840 North Head became the site of the first pilot station, for guiding ships into the harbor. In 1878 the area was set aside as a public reserve on the basis that it be given up for defense purposes if required. After less than seven years North Head was indeed taken for defense purposes.
Go on, bike up. Bike all the way up.
The views are worth every drop of sweat.
Such amazing views, historical defence installations to explore.
Fun for kids, interesting for adults.
Nice place to feel relaxed while seeing the harbor view and just spend the time.
Best view of Mount Rangitoto is possible from here. You can also visit the barracks and tunnel system here. Find out why the gun is called disappearing gun.
Beautiful view, nice place for kids to run and play
Excellent experience, a great walk with amazing views. Can really appreciate the area and the historical value of the mountain a great time here
Greattt place to visit on a sunny day
Great walk to stretch your legs and mega fantastic views
Not bad, good history. Some of the tunnels smell of urine pretty bad. That's not the parks fault of course, but it's off putting.
Spectacular view, wonderfull atmosphere... so nice place to see Auckland global view!
Always nice views to be had of the boats and other activities in the harbour.
A beautiful viewpoint and historical sight. Not too be missed. Especially venturing through the underground bunkers.
Nice secluded beach. Walking track around the headland and WW2 gun positions. Nice on sunny day and good views of city bridge
Great views. Good tracks up and around base but not all open due to stability??
Very cool view of the city (one of the best I think). Has the best preserved bunkers and tunnels in Auckland too.
Awesome place for nice views and afternoon walks. Go there on a sunny day and you won't be disappointed
Beautiful spot for a sunny day, kids will enjoy exploring the tunnels and watching the busy channel. Great views of the city.
Nice walk by the beach with beautiful views.. be prepared to get wet by the tides!
Lovely place for a walk, and one of the best view of Auckland.
So close to CBD yet so isolated from the crowd! Spectacular views of the sky line and of Rangitoto!
Spent 2 hours there with my gf. Had a good time. Always in love with Devonport.
Great views and interesting history. We went paragliding with Wings and Waves.
Okay so this was just part of my final night here sorry about pic quality. Honestly at night time it was kind of spooky to go visit this spot, we found this really cool cat and big cannons on our night walk. An absolutely amazing view of downtown at night.
Fantastic views of Auckland on the site of WWII gun embankments.
Very nice place for family.
Classic spot to visit with the family. Unfortunately they keep closing tunnels and shafts but expected as they are quite hazardous.
Superb walk with outstanding views and fun tunnels
Great spot to watch Prada cup.
Love the stroll around here, it changes all the time. The views are some of the best and the history of the place has something for everyone. Grab an old real estate sign and the kids and let them barrel down the hills. Fun for everyone!
A wonderful reserve, an elevated position with a superb view of harbour and city. Interesting wartime relics: tunnels cannons, lookouts, etc. Well worth a half day visit- highly recommended.
As a Gun Emplacement junkie, this would rate in my top ten.
Lovely spot to take the dog midweek.
The views are lovely.. you can enjoy the city skyline and rangitoto island along with historical war caves.. p.s bring something to eat :)
Stunning views, nice walk up and alot of history
Beautiful mountain, with views of the Auckland Harbour and beyond. Beautiful and picturesque
It’s a visit back in time , you will love and enjoy this place just explore and you would find more than 10 tunnels here
Absolutely positively definently stunning views
Beautiful sunny day to walk at this lovely place
Easy walk, beautiful wild flowers and bush, fantastic views of Devonport waterways and Rangitoto island.
This is a cool place. Tunnels are amazing. There were some areas that were locked. Not sure if there are times when they do open up but otherwise the view out to the Ocean is awesome.
Well worth a look. Wonderful views
Beautiful and have very nice view on the top of the hill. Worth to go. But the wind are bit strong when standing on the top. Half way to the top have a tunnel for store weapons on century aga. Definitely an historical place. Good for short hiking and exercises.
Great place to take kids, it's a volcanic hill on the entrance to Auckland Harbour, great views, it's an adventure park.
So sad to see more and more tunnels closed. Toilets in good condition which was a pleasant surprise. Views are spectacular and what drives you to walk around full circumference to take it all in
Stunning sunset views of the City of Auckland.
A great place for a walk with lots of Green and Blue sea by the side
Fantastic views. Great walk.
Wonderful place to watch sunset and overlooking Auckland CBD
Got the best vantage point to catch on some thrilling action from the America cup race. Safe environment and lovely views of the harbour and the CBD skyline.
Worth it the visit, some of the bankers were open when I visited there.
Great place to visit brought back lots of memories not been there for years the PC has gone a bit ott lots of the caves closed off sad but nice to have a good look around nice day
Very nice view from the top of the hill.
A quiet place with very beautiful view. Easy acces.
Great place to take the kids on the weekend, lots of tunnels, gun emplacements to explore. Take decent shoes as steep/slippery in places. Plenty of coffee/lunch options available in Devonport.
