Reviews of Christchurch Botanic Gardens
F.
Beautiful! Love beautiful flowers & colors during spring and plentiful roses (in rose garden) in early summer. You'll amaze to see many types of roses with various colors! They have playground and small pool (open on summer) and its kid's friendly park. Love to come here with kids
A.
Easily one of the best features of the Garden City Ōtautahi Christchurch. I absolutely love the Botanic Gardens and frequently visit for a stroll with friends or by myself as it is so refreshing. There's lots of birdsong and gorgeous flowers all year round. No matter how many times I visit there is always something new to see! I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.
L.
Didn't have time to explore everything, however what we saw was beautiful! So many wonderful flowers growing in the gardens, many I've never seen in real life. I will return in the future to explore the rest.
R.
Absolutely amazing gardens to visit. A HUGE variety of plants and so much to learn from walking around and reading the signs. There's a big playground for kids with a pool as well and changing rooms. There's a guided tour that you can pay for and a gift shop as well. There's also stands that sell plants and a food shop near the playground. So much parking, and a good injection of much needed nature 🤗
N.
It was easy to fall into several days of exploring and peace here. The gardens are expansive and very well appointed. The landscaping and sculptures are beautiful. I really enjoyed walking around taking pictures here.
L.
Hands down the best botanical gardens on the South Island. Has the biggest tropical garden I've seen at a free attraction with a good variety of plants, including some rarities.
The outside gardens are well kept and worth seeing in all seasons. Don't forget to stop and grab a coffee from the onsite cafe.
C.
Love the gardens and in particular the Cunningham Glass House. Cafe provided good food, coffee and pleasant staff but the speed of service was pretty slow. Massive repetition with multiple people keep checking if you had anything! Take the service number away once you've delivered the food and you'd half your workload.
H.
We went mainly this time for the Rose Garden.
Last week would have been better.
Even so was Fantastic
Plus my wee friend Thrush xx
d.
One of Christchurch's highlights and is right in city centre. It is a beautiful place to take a stroll. The gardens has something to offer every season! You can visit it multiple times and still discover new areas and plants.
J.
This is a must I'd you go to Christchurch, the gardens are spectacular, especially the rose garden and Cunningham House, the colours of the plants are beautiful and the smell of the Stock, OH WOW!
S.
Visited here on a sunny day and it was beautiful. We really enjoyed the Hydrangeas, and so did the bees 🐝😄
P.
An iconic place to visit in Christchurch. Full of beautiful seasonal flowers.
R.
Very well maintained park in the center of the city. It offers a good place for some walking and get away from the busy city life. The pathways are well maintained and overall clean. There are nice spots for sitting around and have a picknick. The park can be found easily.
A.
It was a beautiful day and a most peaceful place to wonder through. We went to a cafe in the gardens for a cup of coffee and a look through the gift shop. Would recommend you take the time to see the many wonders the gardens hold.
T.
Even in winter when the leaves have fallen off, the gardens still have lots to offer. Loved the large open spaces and the impressive trees.
S.
Such a beautiful place to take a stroll. Plenty of flowers, trees and sculptures to bless your eyes.
Kid friendly- playground on site.. (looked pretty fun)
R.
This is a large botanic garden right in the heart of the city centre.
Very nicely maintained and curated, it is a great way to spend half a day.
Locals also prefer this place equally as tourists.
There are themed gardens in side and are well connected with walk ways.
The Avon river meanders through the gardens which makes it even more scenic.
There is an event centre in here as well.
Ample parking is available nearby and the Christchurch museum in proximity is a bonus.
Highly recommended.
R.
I have loved going here since I was a child.
It is a place in the city where you can have peace and maybe take a picnic sitting under the trees. There is also a playground and shallow pool for the kids.
Just a wonderful place to go.
w.
Stunning rose garden and glass houses. Nice cafe and lots of space to walk around. Well worth a visit.
J.
Great gardens. Nicely spaced out and we’ll kept up
C.
Such a beautiful place to walk around with a take away latte 😍
S.
Beautiful but busy. Awesome playground with a padding pool for the kids. Large area so once you get away from the main area it can be more private
A.
This is a very beautiful botanical garden, and there are lawns where you can rest and play. Fortunately, the sun is quite warm in the afternoon, so I wander around in the park, sit by the river and watch the wild ducks playing in the creek.
A.
I just love the Botanic gardens. Well kept, plenty of different places to walk and the gardens are ever changing for the seasons. A delight for old and young and wheelchair friendly.
C.
Beautiful sunny day, lots of work been done creating new beds and improving others. Always something to see whatever time of year
B.
A Beautiful place to take an easy walk around and enjoy a coffee at the cafe very well kept tidy clean
R.
Always worth visiting no matter what time of the year especially the Victorian style hot house. It is large and expansive . Often I've thought they could improve the 'very' flat gardens by 'mounding up' making a rockery of sorts.
B.
Awesome collection of plants..loved the succulents, varieties that I hadn't seen before. Perfect place for NATURE, PLANT LOVERS!! Great landscape with swimming pool for kids and cafes...close to the museum too.
C.
Well groomed, nice ambience with nature.
C.
I was blown away by how this is free and you can walk up the stairs to view it even better. If you walk through there is also a cactus area and an orchid area too. All stunningly beautiful and so worth a walk through.
L.
Beautiful flowers, beautiful scenery. I can’t believe I’ve never visited before!
L.
Love this area especially the bush area of NZ Garden area. Cafe food and drink excellent. able to cater for large numbers inside with notice and under Covid guidelines.
R.
Really well worth a visit. Lovely gardens. So relaxed, clean and refreshing.
L.
This is such a beautiful place to visit. Every path you take brings you to something new. It is both a lovely place to go for a walk to get exercise and also to take your time and explore all the different parts of the gardens. It was great to see so many families visiting with their children.
T.
Brilliant place but weird seeing so many staring at the phone walking rather than enjoying it
l.
Beautiful day out in the gardens as always. The gardens themselves were beautiful and well cared for. I was offered some great advice by the guy working with the Ericas who was knowledgable and very happy to share this so thank you. The guy mowing the lawns even offered to take a photo of us! The great staff just added to the day! Thank you and very grateful to have such beautiful gardens in Christchurch.
N.
This is a must visit in Christchurch. Looking at the map, this city has many green areas. The botanical garden and surrounding parks are real gems. They are very clean, well maintained and beautiful. Staying here, I can see often come walking, running or just enjoying the beauty.
The surrounding park area allows dogs and sports, but the garden itself only allows walking and people to enter. You will see countless species of birds. The garden is divided into different areas, there is ample parking near the visitor center, and there is also a cafe and gift shop in the visitor center. There is also an ice cream stand near the children ’s water park, which is only open in hot weather. It is worth a visit at any time of the year and it is cold when we do this.
I like the greenhouse. There are different areas of tropical, desert and flower plants in the greenhouse. They will die outside. Be sure to go upstairs, and really feel like you are in a dense forest. Outside is a rose garden with a topiary garden. My favorite is the souvenir. Before the introduction of other islands, all the plants that live on these islands. It feels prehistoric and quiet.
R.
I really good place for a quiet walk and appreciation of some plants. All rooms are worth a visit. The cacti and orchids' rooms are great!
A.
These gardens are different to the other ones, they feel more rain forrest like, with lots of tree ferns, lush and a deep green pond.
It feels really secluded and it is really pleasant to just sit on a bench, listen to the birds and soak in the peace and quiet.
V.
Excellent garden in the heart of the city next to the Canterbury Museum. The flowers, trees and shrubs and the birds seems are all nice. Some of the trees seems very old even more than hundreds of years old. I especially liked the roses which are spectacular. Paved and gravel paths all across the garden and you can immerse yourself in the nature for hours. Even the ducks seems friendly enough.
D.
A beautiful scenic place to enjoy nature and listen to the beautiful Bell birds singing. Lots of ducks and ducklings waddling about and the Central Rose Garden is absolutely delightful when the colourful roses are in full bloom. The walks are really nice with lots of big trees for shade on a hot sunny day and warm conservatories to go in on a cold day! The shop has some lovely gifts and a great selection of unique and artistic cards. The cafe has a good selection of food and drinks and outdoor seating. A really nice way to spend a relaxing day or afternoon in nature away from the city. I wouldn't recommend having a meal at The Curator's House Restaurant as I had an over-priced negative experience there with my meal and the Manager.
S.
Nice one but I should be there in Spring. I was there in Winter so I couldn't really see much of it. I believe the garden is very beautiful in Spring and Autumn. I cannot never make it to NZ after 6 years including this pandemic.
H.
Beautiful gardens, a refuge from city life, colour, space, air, nature, water. Many diverse elements go into making the Christchurch Botanical Gardens a great place to stroll around or just hang out. The rose gardens at this time of the year are absolutely stunning. But, I am sure there is plenty of beauty here all year around. So close to the center if town, this is a great asset for the city and really worth going to experience.
R.
The month of October is a good time to visit ..Flowers are a bloom!
I.
Great place to relax. Spring flowers are nice
C.
Stunning colours and nothing beats falling leaves of Autumn. Punted down the Avon and got a completely different view. Beautiful
R.
Such a great walk in Christchurch with paths that lead to different gardens. The tree are massive and so impressive. There are flower everywhere. If ever need a break from the city take a walk on the gardens
P.
Lovely gardens. Lots of space. Various displays. Nice cafe. Check it out
D.
Beautiful, well cared for, lots of mature trees. Appreciated the many labels on trees & in gardens. Great place to take the kids, but watch out for ducks who come up behind you & peck. Wheelchair friendly. Toilets.
D.
Well worth a visit if you are in Christchurch.
The gardens are immaculately kept, luscious and colorful. Great for a wonder around or if you are a plant lover you will find a lot to explore in here. Check out the conservatory.
Or, just grab a book and sit in the shade and relax.
V.
Lovely restful gardens. We were fortunate to be there when baby ducklings were on the lakes. Super cute ! Lovely cafes. I had a delish sandwich. Mobility scooters available for free as well as garden train tour rides. We thoroughly enjoyed shopping in the gift shop. Beautifully kept gardens & obviously a lot of hard work done by volunteers. ☆☆☆☆☆
J.
The botanic gardens is one of my favourite places in Christchurch. There is something for everyone. My husband and I love poppy I to rollicking gelato in the arts centre and then strolling through the gardens with our gelato. We also enjoy taking a picnic to enjoy on the lawn in summer. The daffodil lawn is another favourite spot. I always look forward to walks along the river when the daffodils are in bloom.
A.
The gardens are absolutely amazing with a variety of spaces and experiences designed for all age groups. They are right in the center of the City and provide shaded green connection corridors for pedestrians and nature lovers. The wide variety of plants, trees, ducks and birds that reside in the park are amazing to see.
E.
A large botanical garden just next to the centre of Christchurch. Parking is free for three hours. The garden is free for visitors. Many different sectors with theme which suits everyone. There were some amazing trees, the biggest I guess over 30 metre in diameter. Besides, the river(avon) alongside round the city with gondola with which you may hire for a good time. We come in late summer, not so much flowers, yet, if time permits, the seasonal flowers would be another highlights.
H.
Throughly enjoyed myself as I strolled through the lovely gardens. The rose garden was especially nice. Great place to stop and smell the flowers 😉 if your into gardening or plants totally worth a visit.
E.
Stunning gardens, great variety of horticulture and perfect for relaxing or strolling. Professionally maintained and cared for with plentiful information in relation to not only the variety of plants trees and flowers but also the history of the park and the various activities that took place, sometimes with vintage photos.
L.
Can’t beat the Botanic Gardens on a good day! Massive area to have a wander round, as well as the museum just next door, a playground, pool, and the lovely café. You can easily kill a few hours here. Parking is available for free but often quite full on a nice day, would recommend busing, biking etc in if you can.
J.
Love it. A must go for me every summer and atleast once a man nth throughout the year as a north Canterbury local I love driving in and the free parking near the playground and rivers.
L.
Who doesn't like nature, bright green grass, blooming flowers and wildlife, plus free things? When we were bound by time, my husband and I walked through part of the garden. We saw some of the oldest trees in New Zealand (destroyer-they are huge)! There is a beautiful river running through it, and some artistic sculptures. We rescue little ducks and pigeons. This is a very quiet morning, not far from the city is a good place to stroll.
M.
Beautiful gardens all year round! Good carpark. Very popular in the weekend especially.
Y.
I brought a couple of visitors from Auckland here this week. They were very impressed with the matured trees, rose garden and variety of dahlias at the entrance to the rose garden.🌹🌹👍👍
P.
I love going to the botanic Gardens, there are so many sights to see, to relax and the whole family can connect with nature. There's a cafe, a rose garden, a water area for the kids and so much more to explore. I highly recommend going and spending some time here and just relaxing in the nice warm weather surrounded by beauty and nature.
M.
Lovely place. Lots of flower, trees, lake and every thing related to garden. Beautiful!! It is a wonderful place to visit and to rest. If you came to Christchurch, you must visit the botanic garden!!
B.
The Botanic Garden (free entry) is a great outdoor attraction in Christchurch. Situated between North and South Hagley Parks and Rolleston Avenue, the Botanic Garden is within easy walking distance to the town centre.
We very much enjoyed walking the Garden grounds, enjoying the dedicated small gardens, duck pond and interesting statues, sculptures and fountains situated throughout. We particularly liked the impressive North American Sequoia and other huge trees situated along the Archery Lawn.
Your also find an indoor conservatory, interesting Magnetic Observatory, children's playground area, cafes and a quality Visitor Centre at the Christchurch Botanic Garden.
Note: If you visit the Botanic Garden website, you'll find information on seasonal highlights as well as what is in bloom during different months of the year.
J.
10 years living in Christchurch and had not been to the gardens, I then went twice in one week! Such an asset to a wonderful city😊
E.
Really nice garden. Very big and lots to see. Nice for walking but you can also take a tour. Absolutely loved the greenhouse and the trees who were getting great bright colours.
Also handy that it is next to the museum and a really central point in Christchurch
A.
This was such a beautiful and well maintinaed garden. My family and I came here 3 times when we were staying in Christchurch visting my sister at Uni. We loved walking here. The rose garden is so wonderful.
J.
Love these gardens. What an oasis of peace right in the city. Fountains, a river, playground, cafe, information centre, close to parking. So many types of gardens it's an education every time you visit. Trees, trees, trees. Live this place for learning, refreshing the soul, lift your eyes to appreciate trees, birds, bulbs, herbaceous borders.
P.
Renowned for its beautiful trees, the Christchurch Botanic Garden, part of Hagley Park. The garden is flat and easily explored with an information centre, tea kiosk and all facilities. While the well-tended, century-old trees are of major interest there are many other features including rhododendron and shrub borders, a long herbaceous border and an excellent formal rose garden where the mostly hybrid tea roses are at their best in December. Adjacent to the rose garden is the tropical plant conservatory, fern and cacti houses, while the native plant collection centered on the Cockayne Memorial Garden is not to be missed.
K.
Wonderful place to recharge your batteries.
Thank you to all the staff who were amazingly helpful. I was on crutches and they had a powered mobility scooter available so that I could still visit the gardens with my family. Everything was accessible and we had a thoroughly great day out.
Very much a must see on a visit to Christchurch.
Yummy food in the Cafe!!
J.
Superb and vast. Some amazingly old trees and a wonderful rose garden. Need at least a full morning to appreciate most of it. Was a bit wet cold and cloudy on my visit, so couldn't fully appreciate it fully. Well worth a visit when you are in Christchurch. Take the city tram and get off at the Art College stop.
D.
Lovely gardens large expanse with many different areas.
One of the best botanical gardens in the world.
Swimming pools for children with playgrounds. Large cafe and smaller icecream shop.
Historic hot house and fountain.
Has river flowing through it with a number a different walks.
Number of art works on display.
Locals use it a lot.
Highly recommended for visitors.
S.
Absolutely beautiful a very nice way to fill in a day walking as you looking at plants of all sorts and sizes
A.
Has some very mature native trees. Like stepping into a lush native bush, but right in the middle of the city
R.
Had a chance for a tram tour and our tour guide Faye was very knowledgeable and keeps us entertain through out the whole trip. The place are well maintained and well preserved. With over a thousands of species of plants and trees surely this garden is an oasis simply not to be missed! Great job to all hard working gardeners who keeps this place a wonderful sight.
i.
The season I visited this park is in Spring, the park is full of green grass. Also have 4 large flower area which are full of tulips with different colors. The largest tree which facing the main entrance the leaves not yet grow, in summer time if full of leaves it just like a large umbella.
A.
My favourite part of the garden is the conservatory with all the beautiful indoor plants! The gardens was very well maintained and flowers blooming!
M.
A must see in Christchurch! Kids love the newly added climbing rocks at the playground and the giant trees that offer climbing and shade. I love parking free and 3 toilets located from parking lot to playground to almost at the museum. The hippo statue near playground makes me smile. The kids love to play zombie apocalypse tag in rose garden? I love going into the gorgeous building next to it & feeling like Im in the tropics with all those gorgeous plants. My father loved the riding garden tour.
M.
A very large space. Lots of different area to explore and things to find. I really liked the native NZ area. It gives a good sense of what it's like on tramps without leaving the city. A really accessible space, quite flat and a lot of paths. Nice shop too.
m.
Nicely maintained gardens with green canopy, consisting of various species of plants, trees, flower. Good place for family, friends hangouts. Good for kids to. Easily accessible from the Christchurch city centre, either though walk for tram. Near to the Hayley’s park and across the road to Hayley’s oval Cricket stadium.
Isite Center is nearby.
J.
One of the loveliest botanic gardens we've been to! Love the spring colours, the flowers are absolutely vibrant. And the ducks were cool, too! Definitely a must-visit when in Christchurch.
M.
Lovey gardens. Flat, easy to navigate, wheelchair and pram friendly, plenty to do for people of all ages. Good cafe in the gardens and others close by.
J.
One of best things to consider while in Christchurch. You can find parking through riccaton Avenue. Number of things to see like Rose garden, Rock garden, NZ garden, Peace bell and many more. There is also Kids playground. Public toilets are near the kids playground and, also small cafe close by.
J.
A lovely botanic garden. The roses are well looked after. I was educated about Dahlias, which I saw in December. Stunning. Large expanse. Tall trees. Hagley Park just around the corner. Plenty of benches. Lovely.
Y.
Beautiful gardens, a refuge from city life, colour, space, air, nature, water. Many diverse elements go into making the Christchurch Botanical Gardens a great place to stroll around or just hang out.
D.
Beautiful. Way more beautiful than Hamilton botanical gardens. Friendly South Island people, minimal arrogant foreigners or Aucklanders. Kids had fun, we relaxed and enjoyed.
K.
Visiting here is an amazing free activity in Christchurch. Varied gardens throughout, lots of birds and different flowers, trees, shrubs and more. There are also some great sculptures/art, some fountains and ponds and more. I love this place.
E.
A must-go if you're visiting Christchurch! Such a calm and still exciting place. Even in a 5min walk you will see dozens of interesting species. My fav was the huge Eucalyptus trees
D.
Huge botanical gardens. They have different types if gardens and biomes. The cafe is also good. The rainforest garden is very unique and well maintained. The children's play area and the pool ate also big and well maintained. To explore the whole place it'll take several hours.
A.
A must-see year round. The cafe is gorgeous inside and out. Don’t miss the greenhouse if you love tropical plants. The garden art is sublime, as is the Avon river running through.
G.
Such a beautiful garden. Close to the city center, you can also visit the museum. It's got playground and beautiful rose gardens. Lots to explore, but just walking thru the gardens is the best.
V.
Very good for walking and just relaxing. It’s very huge that walking from one end to another would require some really long walks.
a.
Relaxing place for all the family members. Has an internal museum and collection of plants from all over the world. Garden train is a nice way of seeing the garden our guide Faye was an amazing guide and provided great information and made the visit more exciting.
T.
free entrance not only in the gardens but also in the small muzeum inside. Beautiful rose garden in the middle, huge old trees and small lakes for romantic walks. You can spend all day there.
R.
Beautiful Hagley park and even remarkable botanical garden within it. Lots of trees that definately are unique and we'll maintained gardens. Weather was good when we visited the gardens. Good for spending some silent time and me time there.
C.
We thought this an odd spectacle as they were missing the whole point of enjoying their surroundings.
The pathways & gardens looked well cared for & we were impressed with the layout of the grounds. Lovely place to wander through.
T.
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are absolutely stunning. The new visitor centre and shop are a lovely place to have a coffee and cake after getting lost in the extensive gardens. There are many different types of area and all are immaculately presented and cared for by a large team of friendly gardeners. There are also many glass houses with tropical plants and these are all free to visit as well. There is a large childrens area with a swimming pool and plenty of things to keep the whole family entertained. Definitely worth your time to visit!
p.
Almost all types of trees and flowers are available here. Very well mentained and scenic. You caneven enjoying punting in small river flowing through the garden.
J.
One of the gems of Christchurch. A beautiful place with everything from delicate flowers to towering sequoias. Fields of daffodils and bluebells on the south bank in Spring. Check out the rose garden in Summer through to Autumn and visit the conservatory and cactus house any time.
L.
There is a beautiful rose garden in the center of the park. If you love roses like I do, this place is a paradise for you. The park is fairly large featuring a variety of other plants. You can walk around the park or find a bench, sit down and relax while taking in the scenery.
R.
Lovely gardens kept to an amazing standard. Worth a visit if uv got a few hours to kill in Christchurch before you fly out
M.
A delightful environment- plants, flowers, trees, Springs, hot houses, food, water playground, education and research, and so much more. A tour on the tram is also splendid with guides that have amazing knowledge.
I.
Just amazing. Beauty of flowers and trees you'll never forget. Museum is free (donations recommend). Interesting and very informative. Kid friendly.
D.
Even on a freezing drizzly day the gardens were such a pretty & picturesque place to visit. Some beautiful long-standing trees made for a beautiful backdrop! Def a must to see while in ChristChurch!
N.
This garden contains a gorgeous fountain and other features that are definitely worth coming to look at. The museum, housed in a fantastic piece of architecture, is free and worth a look through too.
E.
Really nice layout, overall seems like a great level of care is put into the gardens
R.
Stunning! A real city jewel that should be visited by more and enjoyed by all who come.
A stunningly well maintained expansive garden suited for young and old and families alike
d.
An amazing collection of beautiful trees and flowering plants from all over the world. The tour guide was highly informative and knowledgable, really worth the money spent on the tickets. Especially loved the close up view of the Ginko Tree.
R.
It's located right next to the Canturbery museum, close to the city centre. Such a nice and beautiful garden, if I lived here I would come here everyday for a walk
C.
The gardens are well-maintained, love the beautiful flowers and old giant trees. Enjoyed watching the ducks and birds around. Such a great place for a morning walk.
S.
Big and well maintained. Has a nice selection of stuff for winter, but summer is where it's at its best. Take a stroll around and make an afternoon out of it. Not to mention it is free as well
s.
Fantastic , tree has root and some root are grown as tree . So you can see extension of one tree in to manifold and some tree have reached at very good height. So if you visit this garden it’s treat to your eyes.
J.
Great place with open spaces for kids to run around, beautiful rose garden and trees.
J.
My partner and I walked through on a sunny Monday morning. This park seems lovely for family picnics and get togethers but I didn’t feel in as much awe as I have had in other city botanical gardens. A few plants looked a bit unhealthy and limp - though I do note I visited in January and am not sure when is the best time of year to visit this. Other areas looked a lot nicer though.
n.
They are different gardens and everyone of them have a name is funny and easy to get lost on the different gardens, but they have amazing flowers. The trees over here are huge!
A.
Any time of year, a huge area to explore: plenty of indoor options when it's wet or cold. A good children's playground.
Summer favourite would be the rose garden.
S.
This has to be one the most accessible, beautiful and largest botanical gardens I've visited. Easy walking & you can even take a punt down the river. Highly recommended.
R.
Excellent collection of Pinaceae species. The tropical collection is in tip top shape when we visited. Rose garden is also worth meandering when you visit. Overall, great place to spend quality time of your vacation.
L.
Very clean and tidy. Good to walk around with the kids an have a wee picnic with them after exploring the museum.
M.
This is my all time favourite hideaway.
Maybe I'm a tree hugging hippy but there is also a great cafe by the visitor centre if you'd like to get a yummy lunch and take in the scenery, or take the kids for a play or swim in the free pool during the warmer months.
P.
SUMMER IS HERE,,,,so now is the time to visit throughout the summer season,,the flowers,,foliage,,rose garden, dahlias, all the hidden gems, tropical plants,,birds, bees, and tranquility by the river,,picnic with the family,,coffee at the café with friends,,ENJOY.
R.
An oasis of colour and nature in the middle of a beautiful city. The gardens are widespread so give atleast half a day to explore. We were short on time so we took the electric van, that turned out to be good decision as the guide gave a lot of information about the plants and the gardens. Garden has plants covering many regions of the world
K.
Peaceful Relaxing Recommended for a stroll and to share some quality time with self, friends, and or family...
L.
My family and I took advantage of this beautiful day and went to the pools and playground at the botanical Gardens. Safe to say son absolutely had a blast. Very suitable and family friendly plus very accessible (for wheelchair use)
J.
Beautiful variety of flowers. The rose garden was astounding when we went (mid-late December)! You could easily spend hours on end here!
F.
A few cool buildings full of exotic plants and the gardens themselves are very peaceful and tranquil. Some lovely spots and full of cool plants and trees. Beautiful river too
K.
Great place on a cloudly day ,first time visiter in maybe 30 yrs
J.
Great pond and nature. Very nice walk around for a fun outdoor feel. The wildlife is also very nice. I even got duckling come up to me. Very nice.

Well maintained park however if you with kids please beware the rough lawn mower as they move pretty fast in the park.

C.
Great spot for an Autumn walk. Huge area to wander.
J.
Very nice gardens set in a large park, with a river close to the CBD.
R.
It's a pleasant and enjoyable place to visit. The tall mature trees preside next to a glittering stream populated by ducks and comorants. Stopped by for a short visit and ended up leaving regretfully 60 minutes later with much much more still unseen.
C.
So beautiful and well kept. Well worth a visit, Easy to spend a whole afternoon wandering around the trees and flower gardens.

This garden is huge, and it's perfectly managed. You'll find tons of different flowers and trees. One of the best places in Christchurch

A must visit place in Christchurch especially this spring season, where flowers are blooming and the weather is really nice
L.
Loved it! Nice place to relax. Read your book, watch lovely ducks and swans.
S.
The Christchurch Gardens are huge, I didn’t realise this when I booked the hotel. A long walk every morning across the gardens to the city centre. The gardens consist of playing fields, wooded areas, rose gardens and areas with native New Zealand trees, ferns and shrubs. There is a museum on the edge, glass houses and fountains.
M.
A must visit when you're in Christchurch. The gardens are huge and have little pockets you can explore like Cunningham house, the rose garden and many more.
D.
The Botanic gardens of Christchurch gives your mind a relaxing spirit. The gardens are clean and well maintained. In the middle you find 2 cafes where you can relax outside or inside. The gardens have free entrance but you can do a gardentour with an solar powered minitrain.
E.
We came during autumn and the breeze was really cold. But our homestay owner gave us extra jackets so we were covered. The garden is beautiful!! I love the vegetable garden most of all. Its at the left side of the entrance. Mum was in the rose garden for nearly 2 hours sniffing all the roses. We had salad and pie for our lunch in the botanical cafe. Its really refreshing and fulfilling. Everything is from the garden itself.
I.
Such a nice place to have a picnic, walk through the gardens fantastic kids playground, lots of seating around the gardens
C.

These photos were taken at Christchurch Botanical Garden last Spring 2017. Perfect timing because all the flowers are in full bloom, especially the tulips! A must-visit in CC. 😍😍

The gardens were very well kept and had plenty to see. It's a good place to to for a walk/run or picnic and there's gondolas if you're feeling particularly touristy. The Canterbury museum is next door and also well worth a visit.

The huge acreage of Hagley Park in Christchurch has the Botanical gardens. The gardens are superb with many plantings; large trees of many species, cactus house, orchid house, fern house, rose gardens, dahlia garden etc. Entrance is free.
J.
A nice spread out garden/park hybrid with a genuinely interesting museum attached (no seriously). Perhaps not offering sights unique only to here, but still a good place to visit for a relaxing walk or to let the kids run around the spacious green.
A.
Nice and free walk up the Avon river to the garden. Huge garden, plenty to see and do. Must visit in Christchurch! ❤️

Not as pretty as the Hamilton ones but still very good to explore :D

Average botanic Gardens. Lost points for not dog friendly. Gained points for kid friendly. Expected more from the "garden city" pales in comparison to the Hamilton gardens which are much much better.
I.

One of my favorite things to do in Christchurch on a nice day.
I believe access is best (if arriving by car) via Riccarton Ave entrance.
Plenty to explore in these Gardens, don’t miss the Native walk which is easy to do, so take a moment to study the map at thee info kiosk.
The cafe in the middle is good also.
L.
Love, love, love. With limited time to get to the city we decided to take the short walk from where we stayed at double tree Sheraton, across the park. We loved this place so much, we ended up spending most of our day walking through it and checking out the indoor plant displays etc. We cancelled our city plans. Would highly recommend for those even if you're not in the direct area. I'll be back when next in NZ. It's absolutely lovely, the trees are lovely and the grounds...including huge garden ornaments were stunning!

Absolutely wonderful garden with many paths and areas. Center of town. Also great museum. We arrived the day after the tragic shootings and the town was in shock. The garden was the site of a growing memorial of flowers and wishes. If in Christchurch, the garden is a must-visit place.

We s beautiful day for a walk in the garden
C.
A place full of greenery and trees like no where else. Come in and spend a little time enjoying this park we are fortunate enough to have.
M.
What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! Our four children (ages 2 - 12) thoroughly enjoyed the playground before we set out to explore the gardens. The play area is divided into multiple sections based on age appropriateness. The large wading pool was very inviting on this hot day and we wished we had packed swimsuits (changing rooms located nearby).
The entire place is stroller friendly and we explored much of it. The cafe on site allowed us to refresh during our visit. Many of the walking paths are partially or fully shaded by mature trees so don't be afraid to visit on a hot, sunny day.
Parking is available, but if you are visiting on a busy day, you may struggle to get a spot on your first try. The Gardens are centrally located in Christchurch with many restaurants and cafes just a short drive away.
T.
Lovely gardens for a walk or a picnic. They have a café too which have really good coffee. One of our favourite spots in Christchurch. Have a look at the info boards for all of the different trails. It’s quite a large part of the park.
g.
A walk with your love, through the gardens will score you many points, especially on a Sunday arvo with a band playing. Grab a coffee, brunch or lunch and enjoy

Wonderful time in the gardens at this time of the year. Trees are just starting to change colour. Recommend a visit to the indoor tropical garden too. Love the big twisted tree. Watching the eels and trout in the stream is cool too.

This is a peaceful park in a concrete jungle. Various ducks and waterfowl inhabit the lakes nearby the botanical garden. Bikes are not allowed to be ridden here but there are bike paths on the circumference. This garden contains plants from all over the world, including a California Sequoia or Redwood. The Rose Garden is a highlight, drawing honey and bumble bees to its varied blooms. The conservatory next door is a great place to warm up on cool rainy days and has species from around the world.

Lovely garden. Much bigger than I thought. Please ensure you have Google maps with you if you go there to explore it for the first time. It can take about half an hour to go from one side to the other, and you can easily get lost for hours if you don't have any maps with you 😁 Ps. The botanic gardens is merged with multiple parks

The first thing we did when we arrived in Christchurch besides checking into our hotel was to walk over to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. We hadn't researched the gardens too much prior to our visit, so it was astounding to walk over and see how large the grounds are.
One can explore various collections of plants and flowers for hours. Furthermore, there are tons of trees and open spaces for sheltered picnics and leisurely strolls. We spent a few hours meandering the grounds, fawning over the gorgeous flowers and plants and trees. We also spotted a mother goose with her goslings in the Avon River. The experience was utterly wholesome and tranquil, a perfect way to start our honeymoon in New Zealand.
Christchurch Botanic Gardens is exceptionally well-maintained, clean, and beautiful botanic garden. It's also free to the public and a must visit for locals and tourists alike. If you're ever around Christchurch, I'd highly recommend dropping by!
