Reviews of Eastwoodhill National Arboretum of NZ
J.
Lovely place. Interesting range of species and history. Would improve if some of the specimens were labelled. Outstanding species should be identified on a map for a true arboretum experience. But still a lovely morning out and a great asset for Gisborne.
C.
A lovely peaceful place to walk and relax amongst the trees. Quite an adhoc arrangement created by an eccentric nudist a few decades ago. Apparently he used to wear only a wellington for spade work! The labelling and mapping is fairly minimal but there are lots of interesting plants.
When we were there on a summer Sunday afternoon we saw only two other people!
R.
This was a beautiful peaceful place. I only wish I lived closer as I could see myself visiting again and again at different times of the year. A lovely place for all ages.
J.
A wonderful place with fine walks for every level of fitness. Free access to a mobility scooter for my partner. Friendly staff and well maintained tracks. If I lived here I would visit every day. Strongly recommended
S.
Great experience, some tracks needed maintenance. As a horticulturist, it was great seeing trees in their maturity, the foresight of the two owners is memorable
K.
Absolutely breath taking. Love going through the trees and the paths. But most of all I so appreciated that all people can go (think you know what I'm getting at)
N.
There were various different exotic trees that I found quite often. I was also looking forward to eating at the Cafe but at the time I was there it was closed.
C.
This place is beautiful. Absolutely worth a visit, variety of walks. It's super interesting and just generally great! Plenty of parking, pretty cool little education centre with areas for you to sit and eat - bring your own lunch.
A.
Wonderful place to see plants trees garden etc. Various walks ro suit different groups of people.
S.
Lovely place for nature walks for all levels of walkers. Beautiful gardens with trees and many flowers. Great picnic place with the family.
S.
The spring greens were lovely, with a few flowers about. Great walks. Will have to visit in the autumn as the colours look stunning

Beautiful place! Please keep up the great work you are doing!

Beautiful parkland. Recommend that you take a picnic lunch. Walk among a large collection of trees then stop for the picnic, to soak.it all in. Good kids playground, visitor shop and Cafe. Check out the granite boulder suspended on a water column. Must do visit when autumn colours are blazing. One of the best things to do around Gisborne, especially if you are a keen gardener or just love walking among trees.
Also wonderful in the springtime.
D.
The most amazing experience. You need at least 1/2 day to really enjoy it
R.
Great place to come with kids of all ages. Walking paths are well maintained and clearly signposted so finding your way around is easy. We have kids 7, 5, 3 and 1 so just did one of the short walks (red track) which was easy enough for a 3yo to walk. We also did some other short tracks near the visitors centre. Some tracks are rough in places so recommend child wearing rather than a pram, but some tracks are flat enough for strollers. The playground is also great, there are two excellent slides and some big swings which all our kids loved. I thought there would be more variety based on the website but what there was was good and the kids spent quite some time there. There are also flat grass areas that are great for a picnic. All in all a great day out and very good value at $28 for a family.
H.
Beautiful place to stay. We were treated to comfy rooms and fantastic meals. Marion made us feel so welcome . The meals left ready to heat were delicious. Even nibbles and and dessert. Thanks so much for your hospitality. Loved the walk through the property.
S.
Loved it.... just wish we could have spent more time there
C.
What a special place! Masses of walks for all abilities through the well-maintained, gorgeous grounds of native and exotic trees. The staff were great, looking after my sister who is awaiting hip surgery, providing her with a mobility scooter so she didn't miss out. There is a lovely gift shop, ample clean toilets, an information centre and picnic tables.
J.
If you enjoy a walk in amongst the trees this is the place. There are several different tracks you can take depending on how fit you are. It is so peaceful and you can hear the different birds singing as you walk. There is no cafe at present so take a picnic as there are tables and chairs to sit on. Worth spending a bit of time here to admire these beautiful trees
N.
Wonderful to visit on a beautiful spring day. Many possible walks of varying difficulty. Stunning trees.
J.
Beautiful place for nature lovers.
Only half an hour from Gisborne city.
I have the privilege to attend a wedding ceremony in a amazing sunny day. Really stunning.
Accomodations if you need yo stay and Playground for kids, cafe place and heaps of eye candy views.
Guided tours, hikes and trails. Lot of options to fit a vary of visitors.
b.
We dropped in just to have a look around and were surprised to find buildings with a cafe there!
The feijoa and date slice was simply to die for! I kid you not it would be worth going back just for that slice!!!
Also do be prepared for a bit of a wait if there are a few people already queued up as their system isn't the most efficient (on the other hand it is the most endearing system in the world being run by volunteers 😍🤩🤣).
Lovely little playground for kids and lots of fantastic walks too. Well worth the effort to find the place.
J.
A good organised place for families, kids and disabilities to enjoy light hiking and nature. The staff were very friendly and helpful. A wonderful maintained tertiary forest with native and foreign tree and plant species. After a long or short walk, you can enjoy lunch, tea, coffee or cakes at the cafe while enjoying native birds singing around you. Highly recommended!
J.
The Arboretum in Gisborne has a fascinating history and is a collection of trees from around the world, some of which are now extinct in their native country. Autumn is a particularly gorgeous time to visit and see all the colors while you wander the many pathways. There is a great playground and taking a picnic lunch makes it a great day out. It has a great gift shop and self contained vehicles can stop over on the property. Push bike groups can arrange a stay over and some retreats are held there. It is also close to the popular Rere falls and the natural rocks slide so this area has much to offer. Approx 50k's from Gisborne.
D.
The most amazing experience. You need at least 1/2 day to really enjoy it
C.
It wasn't the best time to visit as between seasons. But great to have a mobility scooter available on a quiet Sunday afternoon to negotiate the path ways and enjoy an amazing creation of trees shrubs etc from around the world. And so peaceful.
E.
We visited in late April on a lovely autumn day during the school holidays.
The walking paths were easy to negotiate for people of average fitness but wouldn’t say they were that well marked. Others we spoke to on the trails also had this problem.
MOST DISAPPOINTING THING WAS THAT THE CAFE WAS NOT OPERATING SO THERE WAS NO FOOD.
HOT DRINKS COULD BE PURCHASED FROM A SMALL VENDING MACHINE.
IF YOU WANT TO VISIT FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF HOURS TAKE A PICNIC LUNCH AS ITS A LONG WAY BACK TO GISBORNE FOR FOOD.
S.
Beautiful place! Please keep up the great work you are doing!
W.
We think that Eastwood Hill is an amazing place. We spent an hour walking the yellow track. We found the track well formed, well marked and easy to follow. Many of the trees were labelled. The trees and plants are beautiful. We enjoyed the many birds also. There are picnic tables dotted around near the car park and visitors centre. It's well worth the 30 minute drive from Gisborne to get there.
H.
A genuine nation treasure and paradise for lovers of mature trees. A bit of a revamp required including adding ID tags to some of the more remote trees but a beautiful place to wander on a summer's day (or any month to appreciate the passing of the seasons).
Z.
Beautifully planted trees from the N.Hemisphere such as Redwoods, Cypress, beech and oaks. The variety is bigger than anything I've seen. Only $15 per adult & you feel transported to another country. It's so well established I felt like I was in an ancient English woods. Definitely coming back here. Thanks for maintaining it so well.
E.
Very interesting walk. The place could use a bit more up keeping. Worth visiting nonetheless.
//Adding this comment post reply from Eastwoodhill: This makes it even more worth the visit. Consider it a Botanical living museum. The more people visiting it, they will have more funds to keep the place running and improve on it. As I said. It's worth a visit!
O.
A beautiful few hours wandering glades and gullies and enjoying the tree varieties and lookouts. Lovely countryside and interesting founder. Excellent for seating so able to rest and contemplate.
G.
Great Map provided. The purple track I followed, was well marked.
Lots of wind blown branches on some of the tracks. I was pleased I took my walkers walking stick.
J.
Beautiful arboretum - lots of easy walks through beautiful trees and gardens. Walk time is very conservative, we did what was meant to be a 1hr walk in 30mins so keep that in mind.
C.
Great park with a lot of different hikes. You can easily spend the whole day in the park. I recommend the yellow walk, there is also a longer walk of it.
L.
A must-see place! Acres of stunning tree species - New Zealand natives and a vast international collection. Many kilometres of paths and walkways to suit people of all ages and abilities, through scented groves of giant cedars, kauri, rimu, oaks, and maples. Very good and inexpensive on-site accommodation available. Staff could not be more helpful.
G.
Lovely place for a walk. Can do multiple walks and switch between them on route. Trees you won't see anywhere else in NZ. Interesting history of the place. Also a good kids climbing frame. I don't think the cafe still operates though.
S.
Loved it.... just wish we could have spent more time there
D.
Quiet and cool even in the hot sun. Very useful map and the trees are well labelled. Sheep are around too, so swap boots if possible. You can also camp here and try out some of the longer walks. Another East Cape treasure
P.
Fantastic, absolutely breathtaking and looking forward to going back again. Very reasonably priced, pathways were nice and well maintained, good for baby buggies and umbrellas were provided also as part of the service. Only small gripe would have to be the very slow service from the cafeteria (I actually had to go ask for my order) and the toilets hadn't been cleaned when we went to use them (close to midday).
L.
Amazing, soothing walk. We did yellow track, short version. Just under hour and very easy.
Entrance is $15 per person and very worth it. Divine place
A.
Beautiful! Only heard of this place because of the Lonely Planet guidebook and stayed a night in the excellent budget priced accommodation. There was only my friend and I so we had a 8 bunk dorm and kitchen facilities to ourselves shower and sheets for 25 dollars each. Really nice, clean and comfortable bunks and facilities. The overnight stay included entrance to the gardens.
The Arboretum was beautiful to visit and was amazed i had never heard of it before. Lots of lovely flowers too.
Apparently stunning when the autumn colours are out.
Really nice things for sale in the shop.
J.
Great place to take the family, but very disappointed that the Cafe was not open!!!???
S.
Really lovely spot! We love natives so went on the red native trail as only had an 1hr to spare. On second thoughts, although still beautiful, I think would have preferred a different track to see exotics you don’t typically see. The manicured gardens & extent of tree planting is really amazing. Will definitely come back to do other trails.
D.
This is an amazing place. Expect at least one hour but nice to spend 2 or 3 here. $15 entry each but it's worth it. You can can't here to self contained vehicles, $10 each per night. Nice staff too. Confusing map but your supposed to get lost 😀
S.
Peaceful and beautiful !!! They provide accommodation as well.
K.
A wonderful place to visit if you're in the area. Although the temperature was touching 30 degrees, there was plenty of shady tracks to enjoy out of the direct sun. The smells of the different species, especially the redwoods, brings back memories of California. Do remember to take food and drink, as the Tea House is not open every day.
Simply amazing to think that once were paddocks are now a special haven of trees from around the world.
w.
Beautiful trees and birdsong, but not a lot of colour left late May. Probably better to go late April or early May instead. No cafe (take your own picnic), but have just started a mobile food truck Thurs to Sun. $15 entry to Arboretum seemed a bit steep. $10 would have been more appropriate for late autumn and through winter. Different colours for different tracks but with crossing paths throughout, could have been a few more signs.
A.
Beautiful place especially in autumn and the colder months. You do have to pay a but though. If you plan on going more often then a family pass is worth it. Theres a cool kids playground also really nice hut to be used for picnics in the rain.
J.
Great Place to get back to Nature- loved it 👍♥️
A.
Really good walks and a fun kids playground at the beginning of it all. The trees are well labeled and the occasional historical context is just right for the interested and easily passed up for those who prefer to just be out in nature. Beware though, the walks are meant to be walked in one direction. This is quite obvious at the starting point but if you strike out on your own before you look at a map, it can be a little frustrating.
M.
Perfect place if you've got a couple of hours to kill. The times are generous and the steep parts are do-able by all fitness levels. Amazingly helpful staff.
Only thing- I wouldn't recommend if you've got somewhere to be. It's so easy to keep wandering through the beautiful trees.
C.
Monique, Dan and Trudy were wonderful hosts. They love what they are doing and it shows even though they are all quite new at Eastwoodhill. They were very obliging to our needs. The arboretum was just beautiful. It has many stories to tell over the last century through the eyes and hands of many hard working people. We would love to come back and see it again in the spring or autumn.
We did three of the amazing walks but sadly ran out of time. The accommodation was fabulous too. We couldn't want for anymore.
It was a privilege to experience this beautiful place. Thank you guys for a memorable visit and thank you to the founders of this national treasure.
Kind regards Jan and Chris.
V.
The canopy of the trees is high up due to growth of the trees planted over the years. The autumn colours were great.
S.
One of our favorite places to visit
M.
So good!! Put plenty of time aside and take a picnic. You'll love it!
J.
An insanely beautiful place. I'm so glad we stopped in, just wish we could have stayed on site and done it justice.
S.
Great place with lots to explore.
T.
Beautiful big park, with nice hiking opportunities. The entry fee is a bit high though.
A.
An absolutely unforgettable morning spent chasing my feet over some of the tracks in the dappled shade of epic trees planted by a man of arboreal vision. I happily signed up to be a 'friend' for a year on the strength of my 3 wonderful hours here!
E.
We found the tracks a bit difficult to follow. There were other paths that were not on the map but were signposted.
Otherwise a lovely place.
A.
What a gem to discover, well worth a visit Very interesting+ beautiful. Great selection of walks Is the National arboretum+ should be valued as such Campervans can stay here for $ 10 Does have great kids play area
E.
Very peaceful place to walk, no traffic noise or wind noise, a nice loop track to visit many big trees. Trees are distanced to grow.
P.
A peaceful place to walk around and take in some magnificent trees. Well worth a visit.
D.
One of the most peaceful places Take your time to enjoy the walks
S.
What a wonderful day we had. The tree's were starting to turn red and yellow. The lunch we had was yummy you can pre order this. Thanks Monica and team can't wait to come again. Rebus club of Palmerston North.
S.
This idyllic attraction 30 mins inland from Gisborne is the growing culmination of a vision that began with first plantings just before WW1 then served as a key part of its founder's recuperation from wartime injuries. Visiting in a sunny day in spring, we found the profusion of new growth uplifting. Our only issue was the confusing route-marking, which we couldn't match to the map, but which could easily be remedied with clearer signage.
M.
Beautiful and tranquil, nice range of walks, great autumn colours
M.
We did the Summit and Wetlands/Lowlands walk. Amazing views at the top, you could see for miles. So peaceful, a great way to relax in peaceful surroundings.
G.
Was told there was a great cafe here so decided to wait until there to eat. On arrival found cafe and office closed . Luckily had cash and paid honesty box. Thoroughly enjoyed Yellow walk but maybe a Facebook page or update on website for facilities needed.
A.
Great place well worth visiting. Need to be able to spend the whole day there. The volunteers are marvellous. More people need to know about this beautiful area.
w.
Lovely place to wander around. It would be better with more signs so we knew what we were looking at but well worth the time
M.
Wished i had 2 days to spend there. Loved the interest ing trees
H.
I recommend this if you like getting lost. I am an experienced tramper and I can follow a map or signs, but the signage for the Arboretum is the most confusing I've encountered, probably because there are intersecting paths every 50 meters, and they're not properly signaled on the map or on the path itself. And the map they give you is extremely cluttered as well. I think we lost our path at least 5 times, which ruined the whole experience for us.
G.
Stunningly beautiful. Autumn colours abounded. Lovely timeless sense of peace.
D.
Great place for taking the kids for a roam through the woods ....beautiful trees from all around the world .....bonus Fibonacci swirl layed in paving around a big boulder ....and good little playground for the kids
S.
Large area. Nice variety of trees & plants. However we found the tracks confusing, they aren't well marked even though you get a map.
c.

(Translated) This facility was donated over 100 years ago and has been cherished and looked after to this day. Here you can find flowers and trees spread over a large area. You can hike over clearly and clearly marked routes. There are short, medium and long distances involved. Later I definitely recommend something to eat and drink in the café and restaurant. The food and drinks are served by volunteers who can hardly be surpassed in their warmth. Entry of $ 15 / person is fair. Children pay less.

Kinder zahlen weniger.

(Translated) Very well laid out and super friendly staff. For our little ones there was a bag with a lollipop and a task that they could complete during the hike through the park, they had a lot of fun and we walked much further than we originally planned. There are various marked ways that can be combined x or shortened as desired. At the start you get a card. There is also a nice playground! Take food and drinks with you and take a break at one of the beautiful lookouts.

(Translated) Perhaps it lacks funds, the overall planning and maintenance are not effective, and it is only suitable for locals to relax. If you make a special trip to visit, you may be disappointed!
