Reviews of Northern Breakwater - Shipwreck Point
Shipwreck Point is an apt name.
Numerous shipwrecks have been recorded here. With no natural port on the West Coast of NZ, unpredictable and treacherous harbour bars are the mariner’s dread.
Greymouth has the most ship wrecks than any other place in New Zealand.
The Greymouth River bar is notoriously dangerous for ships. Entering the river ports on the West Coast has always been risky for ships.
A bar is a shallow area of sand or mud, usually deposited near the mouth of a bay or river. The seas along a bar often are much larger and steeper than the ocean swell and wind waves outside the bar.
The Grey River bar is one of the most dangerous on the coast. There are no laws, but the Port of Greymouth advises that if a blue light at the breakwater is flashing, conditions are dangerous and only the most skilled skippers should consider crossing.
"There are old skippers and there are bold skippers, but there are very few old, bold skippers.”
Fortune favours the brave!
Beautiful views of Tasman Sea and Southern Alps. Plenty of parking, public toilets. Vehicular access is a bit tight.
Good to see the Greymouth Bar , just a small sea today
Perfect freedom camp, and beautiful view of the sunset.. and good waves for the surfers!
Not sure if it's worth the walk, the beach itself is pretty ugly. Nice place to get some fresh sea air away from everyone else.
Beautiful view out here. 🌅
Nice place to come for a drive, wild ocean which is pretty fun to watch
If you like watching crushing waves, this is the place for you. You can drive right to the end.
A great freedom camp
Very cool views along the coast, especially at sunset.
Great walk a long the breakwater. Be careful of the weather. The waves come over the top in bad weather.
We saw seal & dolphin off of the end.
Could do with some toilets at one end or the other.
Amazing contrast of the southern alps and the Tasman sea, great place to have a fish and a scoop of chips
Extreme Grey river meeting extreme Tasman sea
Stunning views of Southern Alps from the Greymouth of Bar
Perhaps one of the most scenic areas in Greymouth. Also good for a casual walk.
Stunning and inspiring awe or dread in any who dare cross the bar.
Great surf ..to look at. But one brave person surfed this today
Wow. Nice view from here.
Awe inspiring.
