Reviews of Pancake Rocks and Blowholes Track
n.
It is a beautiful scenery. Rocks formed like layers , which looks like a pancake. I guess it might be the reason behind the name. But, anyways I was not lucky enough to witness the blowhole, may be wrong timing due to low tide. Beautiful rock formations. Water pools between rocks. Really gorgeous scenes around. Wheel chair accessible. Medium to strong network coverage.

This place is incredible. Fantastic walkways and viewing points. Staggering what Mother Nature can create. Amazing views back to the rainforest. Highly recommend.

An amazing destination that is a must-stop if you are ever travelling on the west coast of the South Island. The walk around isn’t long and only includes a few staircases. These rock structures are incredible!
S.
Awesome walk!! Very well done and well presented. Wheelchair accessible most of the way. Which was very cool to see. Beautiful on a rough day! Nice shops over the road also.
S.
Beautiful place to be !! It's a short walk from the main road, a must see creation of the mother nature. Walking paths are well maintained and most of the area is wheelchair friendly.

We went twice!
In one day!
And we're old!

About 35 million years ago, the present form of these rocks began with millions of tiny skeletons and shells falling to the bottom of the sea. The sand and mud that went from the land to the bottom of the sea created the pressure that would turn these remains into solution. For reasons still unclear, some minerals merged to form thin seams of mudstone between layers of limestone.
About 5 million years ago, these stones began to rise from the seafloor with the massive bending, rising, and falling of the land. This process continues today, pushing up the Southern Alps.
During the Last Interglacial Period, the pancake rocks were a beach covered at high tide. The bizarre-shaped buttresses of pancakes we see today are the result of weathering over the past 100,000 years. During this time, the land has been uplifted to its present-day position above sea level, and the pancake rocks largely stripped of beach sands and gravels that once covered them
The forces of sea and weather during the past 100,000 years have eroded the mudstone more than the limestone, enhancing the 'pancake" effect.

Another free tourist attraction on the way to the north. You can park easily to get food. The track itself is well designed to allow you to do amazing photos in total safety. This site is unique. Ideal for a break on the road.

Amazing place, the rocks and the views were awesome and the paths around the whole place were all sealed and very easy to walk. One of my most favourite places on our holiday. ☺

Pancake rocks and blowholes !
Limestone landscape of pancake-shaped rock formations, blowholes and surge pools on this short, paved walk that's great for children.
1.1 km loop
Walking and tramping
20 min
The Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point near Punakaiki are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes.
The foundations of the Pancake Rocks were formed 30 million years ago when minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface.

A g very pleasant walk except for the couple that didn't take notice of the sign that said no dogs. It is a shame this isn't policed
A.
Loved this place. Very well maintained for a great experience. A definate go to place, however, it could be allowed for dogs on a leash as its a long way to travel to find you have to lock your dog in the hot car.

Very good motel clean and friendly. The owner was so helpful. He suggested we go to treetop walk that is very suggested. We enjoy staying this motel.

A stunning and short track with very informative signage. The pancake rocks are a very intriguing and interesting formation, created by eras of the force of nature. We didn’t get to experience the blowholes though as the tide was out and weather was calm, however you can still hear the gushing of the water and feel the immense power of the ocean. Truly majestic
J.
Fantastic place even on a wet day. One everyone has to see.
M.
Great walk and fantastic scenery. Have your camera ready!
B.
Fairly short, but worth the stop, at least at high tide when the waves are crashing against the rocks. I think we were done in 20-25 minutes, including plenty of stopping to watch the waves and birds.
Plenty of birds to see. Most of the walk is flat and paved, but there’s an optional part with some steep, narrow, stone steps; that part has the best views if you can make it.
p.
Perfect day to visit
