Reviews of Kauri Loop Track
W.
2 options to get to the top,for those less fit choose the loop option as there are plenty of rest spots and amazing Kauri trees to view. The summit is well worth the effort. View pic is taken from the lower summit.
a.
This is an easy two hour loop wagon with lots to see and stop for along the way. The initial bit is a little steep with stroud but it isn't for too long. The Kuari tree is quite amazing and the best bit is the view from the upper lookout.
H.
Around 2.5 hours loop. Lots of stairs so be prepared. Quite easy. No toilet in the beginning of the track.
A.
Easy walk, allow 1.5hr return to upper lookout with stops.
Not bad for a quick track. Has few steps.
P.
Couple of hours loop to burn those extra calories. Can be little difficult if you going with very young kids. Plenty of spots to rest during the track. Views are to die for at the upper deck.
M.
Great walks up the steps you have to be really fit to get to the top .
Wear boots
Takes one hour up
S.
Well maintained track. Not crowded at all even on Saturday. I took the 3 km long track via Kauri Grove, upper lookout and lower lookout. Delightful to see huge fine trees, a 30m tall Kauri, and many Nikau palm along the track. Plus, a nice view of Waikato River and Huntly at the upper lookout.
Tips: It consists of many steps, some are relatively steep from a beginner‘s point of view.
As there is an old loo 😖at the track starting point, I strongly recommend having a toilet stop in Huntly.
K.
Medium to easy track with Giant Kauri tree and Kauri Grove. The loop is about 40 minutes. We really enjoy the Last Kauri. It’s like a quiet giant. As a history fan, I kept on thinking what happened in the last Millennium. When we have a different perspective, you can see they are the owner of the planet.
e.
Beautiful track, highly recommend. If you take the loop you’ll find some areas with magnificent views. The track is well taking care, I hope you get the chance to do it.
A.
The main loop trail is very well defined. If you take the trail from upper lookout to southern lookout, prepare for a bit of a challenge but nothing a moderate hiker can't overcome. Short trail overall but very steep! Make sure to have water on hand during!
M.
I'm recovering from spinal surgery and need to challenge myself and build fitness. This climb certainly did that. The track forks off after about 200 metres but we carried on the steep path up. In places the stairs seemed more like a ladder! After 900m, we came to the top of the ridge and that showed we had another 120m to the upper viewing point. At the top, Waikato's foggy winter weather provided an almost total whiteout at first but just for a few moments as I had my camera out, some fog lifted and we were rewarded with great views of some peaks.
On the way down, we headed left and took the easier but longer route down (1.7km).
Not easy but also not onerous; kids may complain if you go straight up as we did. If you do take kids, I'd recommend taking the first right fork you come to.
P.
Great walk up through the Kauri grove to the ridge of the Hakarimata Range. It's much quieter than the Southern end Hakarimata Steps and it's about 6.5 h 12.5km end to end, from the Parker Rd car park to the bottom of the Steps at Brownlee Rd.
M.
First track we did on New Zealand, easy but with many steps, don't think the southern lookout is worth the extra walk mostly because it was very muddy (late September). Super clean and very well signed.
H.
Really enjoyed this walk - it's steep in places but the path is well maintained, a few benches around, good views from the top and the kauris are amazing, great to see them up close
I.
Really cool hike. Good balance between fitness and enjoying nature! It's great hiking up the steps, getting a nice view and then walking back through the Kauri Grove. Easy location to get to for all vehicle types and plenty of parking.
J.
Great walk, really enjoyed it. Nice shade cover and great views.
C.
This is the best Hakarimata walk. Challenging but still doable. Highly recommended.
K.
This walk is majestic, tranquil and peaceful. Highly recommend it will not disappoint
T.
Absolutely beautiful! Easy and very well maintained track, amazing trees and views!
N.
Not too busy. Great track in the wet. Good views. Massive Kauri tree
D.
Lots of stairs but worth it with the view at the top.
I.
Excellent. Love this walk. DOC needs to do something about the possums at the top look out. They must of been having a party up there tonight.
E.
Lots of stairs but my 5 and 10yo managed it. Nice view from the top
A.
Quite Walk through the bush. Great work out.
D.
I took my kids on the loop walk, over an hour casual walk. Good parking at the start and basic toilet. There were more steps than I expected but not too bad, the sign says 1500 steps. We did not see many people on the day so if you have grown tired with the summit track or that one is too busy this makes a nice alternative. The path is very well maintained and sneakers will be fine. Take backpack with a water bottle or two and some snacks and make sure you go to the lookout, fantastic view and just a little further up.
A.
Few steps, spaced out, bit of education on the native fauna then this stunning view! What more could one want?
C.
Nice short walk just over an hour. Track in good condition with some steps. One very large Kauri halfway and smaller trees in grove.
J.
Always a pleasure to walk this track. Challenging enough for those wanting to improve their fitness. Not as tough as the Ngaruawahia side, but not for the faint hearted either! Plenty of parking available.
F.
Short but quite steep Hiking trail near Huntly. Can include the Southern lookout as well or if more ambitious, can include this as part of a day trip as a one way group hike (with vehicle shuttle) including the likes of the waterworks track + Trig.
L.
Stunning view from the lookout, which is a great reward for all the steps to reach there. Loved the Kauri grove and the large big Kauri - remnant from pioneer felling. Peaceful and serene on the quiet side of the hill, but you can hear traffic noise from the Highway on the Huntly side of the hill. Once the highway is re-routed, that should reduce, but sound will still carry up to the hill.
M.
Beautiful views, so many stairs
F.
Walked till the old Kauri. Nice and easy.
A.
Very nice track. Loved it, old big trees. But get ready to burn some calories, many steps up to beautiful lookout
A.
New Zealand is known for walking tracks, views and treks. Kauri is one such track with the largest tree hiding in from a 1 hour walk for us. Remember to sanitize your shoes before entering!
J.
Beautiful spot, and well maintained walk. Can highly recommend.
M.
Local attraction to Hamilton, but closer to Taupiri. Lovely tiny walk suitable for everyone. Lovely views. Well maintained. Kauri trees galore. Scenic overlook views. Not too busy like the Hakarimata walks on the other side of the range closer to Hamilton.
C.
Great walk, with a reasonable fitness level needed. Great views of Huntly and the Waikato River from the top
A.
Early morning walk around the Kauri walk. Takes 60-90 mins.

J.
This place is not heavily advertised but a great fun free family venture, lovely views and well signed. Keep on the track and keep your boots clean to preserve the wildlife.
P.
Nice, short walk with some views
M.
Well maintained track, great views. Tough climb.
L.
Lots of stairs, but a nice little walk with some views. Sit under the big pine tree and listen to the birds.
J.
Nice place to go for an afternoon hike. Still you should bring along water, if the sun is shining as there are some steep parts
W.
Was well worth the climb. Awesome views at the top on a sunny spring day.
M.
Absolutely beautiful.
A nice walk to do as a family.
My 5 year old loved getting photos with the big Kauri tree.
N.
Wonderful walk, alot of steps. Need medium level of fitness. Lots of rest spots and grear views.
E.
A beautiful shaded hike, somewhat wild in places and very rooty terrain. Some challenging climbs, but mostly undulating.
t.
Nice place to go for a weekend walking experience.
V.
This walk is easier than the Summit Haakarimata track, not as busy and the biggest Kauri tree in the Waikato.
D.
