Reviews of Pencarrow upper lighthouse
a.
One of the nicest scenic bike rides I have done. Super pretty views and is awesome for an ebike. You can get seriously high and see some amazing happenings....converted me to mountain biking! Couldn't recommend more 😊😊
j.
Absolutely stunning ride.
Challenging to access, particularly via bike - make sure you are well prepared with strudy footwear.
Beautiful views.
Little windy, of course. But hey, totally worth it. Must do !
M.
You can hire a bike from bike shed and cycle to the lighthouse. Not so difficult. Good for a family day out on a sunny day. You can also walk the distance. Unfortunately, cars now need a special permission to enter the costal road
H.
A 4 hour walk, we did it in 3, can hire a push bike or electric bike. Mostly travel road. All flat until you get to the lighthouse, a steep walk up the grass hill for a few min then gets a bit flat then steep again to the lighthouse, very windy at the top, Stunning veiws, lots of sheep, goats, cows, birds. Has a picnic area with tables :)
M.
Well worth a trip. Fairly barren landscape on the way from the Eastbourne car park but great views across the harbour and plenty of ships going by. Much quicker on a bicycle and worthy of carrying on around the coast to visit the unique lakes and historical sites.
T.
A spectacular coastal walk around to Pencarrow Head. There's also a loop track to access another lighthouse on the hill. The road, which is popular with cyclists continues round towards Palliser Bay in the Wairarapa. Do a weather check as winds can be wild and there's nowhere to hide. Best to pick a calm fine day. Beautiful spot for sunset.
L.
Hire some bikes at the end of the road or take a walk along this gravel road to the Lighthouse. Beautiful views to be had across to Wellington and down towards the South Island from the Lighthouse. Information boards give an insight into life of the Lighthouse Keepers and their families and the hardships they faced. A short walk to the grave of the 7 month old daughter of one of the families gives a reminder of the perils of living this isolated life.
J.
Amazing place… must visit…best on sunny day…friendly staff…
R.
Love biking up here, follow on down to the lake. Around the boardwalk up the other side. It's a great circuit. The views from the lookout above the lake are spectacular, the history is cool. The is a super rare dendraglyph if you know where to look.
R.
Nice gentle bike ride
S.
Beautiful spot. Can quickly access the whole area via ebike in < 3hrs
R.
Fantastic trek on a fantastic day, the views were amazing from the Bluff Point lighthouse. Recommended.
A.
Awesome views and well worth the walk
B.
A very worthwhile and beautiful walk, be sure to take enough water and wear good walking shoes. It's very exposed and can be incredibly windy at times.
J.
great walk, pretty exposed though so make sure you pack the sunscreen and plenty of water
R.
The Pencarrow Lighthouse is hidden above the hill. Located directly on the Wainuiomata coast is a second lighthouse, Pencarrow Head Lower Lighthouse, which is clearly visible from the ferry
s.
Nice place for a bike ride or talking a walk
n.
Beautiful place. It's about 2 hours walk from the carpark. It's mostly flat and easy walk to the bottom lighthouse. There is steep climb of about 800m towards the end that leads to the upper lighthouse. On a sunny day, it's possible to see South island on the horizon. There is an option to rent a bicycle from the bike shop just before the carpark. It costs about $30 for 2 hours of bike hire. It's a good place to take the family for a fun day out.
j.
Fantastic views. Beautiful New Zealand at its best. The rolling hills, exceptional coast lines. Not only a great walk or cycle ride, but also the opportunity for diving and fishing, picnicking or just enjoying the lovely scenic views.. Highly recommended.
c.
Nice day for a ride out to the Lodge
M.
Mean day out here on the rental bikes from the road end at Eastbourne.
M.
A beautiful bike ride around the coast with views across to Wellington city and the ferries as they pass by
S.
Amazing views! Amazing sunset and sights of the south island and alps! 2 hours there 2 hours back! Definitely worth the walk!
S.
A pleasant 9 km flat cycle ride from the road end the southern end of Eastbourne. Just be aware of the wind as it can be a tough ride back into the northerly, especially if you have children....
Great spot for a picnic and spectacular views of the outer harbor coastline.
L.
If you park near the bike rental shop, it's a 14km round trip to the lighthouse on the top of the hill. Mostly flat, gorgeous views and you can even see rhe south island on a clear day.
C.
Nice walk down from the upper lighthouse, past the lake and around the point
A.
Visit both the lower and upper lighthouses. The historical information boards around the top lighthouse are very informative and provide amazing historical information.
M.
Stunning spot! Epic views
A.
Awesome views, flat ride out to the lighthouse, historic location.
L.
Fantastic easy, mostly flat ride or walk around the coast. It can get windy, but on a nice day it's great. Views are good from the lighthouse.
L.
It's well worth going an extra couple of K's past the lower light house, and up through the wetlands area and follow the track to the upper lighthouse. Stunning views!
K.
Great flat walk takes about 4hrs return from the bike shed when walking. Can also go up to the old Pencarrow Lighthouse following the signs to get a great view from above.

The pilgrimage to Pencarrow Lighthouse makes a memorable day trip from Wellington city or the Hutt Valley. Starting from pretty Eastbourne, it’s a return walk of around four hours, or 1.5 hours on a bicycle (bike hire is available at the gate during summer). The lighthouse has its own captivating story to tell, for not only was it the country’s first permanent lighthouse, it was also home to its first and only female lighthouse keeper – Mrs Mary Jane Bennett. From 1852, Mary and her husband George operated a light from a window of their cottage at Pencarrow Head, even more isolated than it is today. Life was a real struggle for them and their family, as evident in the lonely grave of little Eliza just shy of the lighthouse. George died in a boating accident in 1855, but a pregnant Mary was undeterred from her duty. It was under her watch that Pencarrow Lighthouse was first lit on New Year’s Day 1859, and she stayed on as lighthouse keeper until 1865 raising her six children alone.
J.
Great walk/bike ride. Just be aware if it's a Northerly wind. Easy ride out to the lighthouse, but super tough back
M.
Easy walk/cycle nice and flat, pretty smooth dirt road. Nice views. There's a cycle rental place at the gate
T.
Reasonably simple cycle to the Heads (Pencarrow and Baring) from Hutt Valley. You need MTB tyres from the shed (bus depot @ Eastbourne) onwards. Wind can be an issue. I understand someone fell from the upper lighthouse path recently and that would not have been nice. Not sorry I took the time to cycle out.
M.
It's an achievable trip for families with younger children. Very enjoyable!
R.
Always a great landmark to visit. Brilliant weather no wind a calm. Great for biking or walking to see
H.
pretty cool. worth the nice family walk. views were cool, and even the eyebrow crushing wind added to the experience
S.

J.
Amazing views and a decent run on the mountain bike gives a great workout too
k.
Spectacular views all the coastal walk to the lighthouse. 6.7km from the end of the road
C.
Worth the bike ride, even with a head wind. Fun beaches to build wood structures on.
M.
Good for a bike ride but watch out for the headwind on the way back!
M.
Awesome hike to a great view. Worth the effort.
C.
Very enjoyable walk. Quite easy as the terrain is flat.
N.
Nice walk, really flate from Eastbourne. Started late the afternoon, you could admire the set set!
