Reviews of Newdick’s paid private access to public beach
W. B.
The beach itself is great, good for the family etc but the owners of access to the beach placing rules for a public space is questionable...
But I'm also happy that the people on the beach didn't care and did what they wanted anyways was refreshing to see also.
So yeah, if you can hide what they don't want you to do and get away with it then you'll have a lovely day.
L. W.
It's a private beach, $5 entry via honesty box for a private car. The track to the beach is passable for 2WD car but quite bumpy and very dusty. Good beach for swimming and the kids had lots of fun and and around the water with rocks and rock pools to explore nearby.
Downsides is no toilet facilities and also get quite a lot of 4WD vehicles cruising up and down the beach which can be disconcerting for a newcomer. Just remember it's private, keep an eye on the little ones and roll with it. It is a great swimming beach.
There does not appear to be lifeguard as such present.
Nearest shops are at Maketu.

An amazing beach, a beautiful place to take the family.

This beach is a hidden gem. Unless you had been there before or going with friends whom had been there previously, you would likely drive on by and miss something special. There is a small charge administrated by the land owners whose land you need to drive through for access. But In my opinion is well worth the $5.00 per vehicle. However no toilet facilities are available in case anyone is wondering.

Beautiful long beach with wide, soft sand, and good swimming and surfing. It closes at 6PM daily (closes at 5 PM in the winter months) and has to be accessed with a privately maintained driveway at a cost of $5 per vehicle, per entry. It’s very much worth the small fee! If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, there is an access ramp at the parking lot, and you can drive along the beach, too! (Don’t try it if you don’t have a good 4-wheel drive...the sand is pretty loose in many spots and you will probably get stuck...) Amazing cliffs and scenic rocky beach along the northern part.
It is never crowded, but the parking lot can get full on weekends or holidays.
It is most definitely one of our favorite beaches in New Zealand!!
Plan to spend several hours here!

A special place. Private beach. You pay 5$ for car entry.
Very quiet and away from the typical hype of other beaches.
Fishing and gathering kaimoana.
Beautiful place to relax and rejuvenate 💦💚

Love it here, another beach side neighbouring maketu beach. Cyclist and pedestrian are free but those driving need few dollars for entry. It was quiet, good for exploring, and photography

Previous reviews about the drive were concerning but it was short and manageable at a slow speed. The owners were very aware of it and are waiting on someone to do maintenance so I expect that this will be resolved shortly, perhaps on the 2nd of Feb as there was a sign saying access is closed that day. There was adequate parking on a busy day, so that was nice! The closest place for cash-out is the Maketu dairy/post office.
The diversity and quantity of marine life is really a wonder - the only comparable beach I've seen is Goat Island, NZ's oldest marine reserve. The beachcombing is great, lots of stuff you'd normally only see on older folk's shelves or museums. I'd like to see a geologist's overview of the volcanic rock there too. There were a few people out there collecting kina on the rocks and signs of a healthy snapper population.
It's also great for your average beach enjoyment. It's easy to spend hours there (BRING SUNBLOCK) and there is a lot of space to find a quiet spot. Don't forget your litter. Despite private ownership of the access, marine life are far more likely to get to your trash before the owners or a good samaritan. It takes a collective effort to keep this place relatively unspoiled for the future.
All in all, it is 100% worth a visit. Bring sunblock, cash, water and a bag to bring your trash home in.

Beautiful place. Less crowded.

What a lil slice of heaven! Well worth the 5bucks to drive on down(private land)
Can spend hours at this beautiful place!
Highly recommended

Great spot to relax, have a picnic and go for a walk too.
A. H.
Great beach plenty of shade from trees on the sand and good parking not too busy on a good day either which was awesome!!
S. G.
There is a surcharge because its a private road but its a nice beach however no proper toilet facilities.
S. J.
Lovely beach for the whole family to enjoy.
P. C.
Incredible spot. Matchless. Reasonable surf. (Watch for rocks!)
D. M.
Great beach, safe for the kids and lots of rock pools to check out at low tide.
M. D.
Secluded beach with tons of shells and plenty of swimming opportunities!
J. M.
This beach is awesome. But be careful ... Some dangerous things can wash up from warmer waters on to Maketu beaches. Like yellow-bellied seasnakes.
Newdicks is private land and the owner/s have been letting people enjoy it for decades. For a price, of course.
There used to be an honesty box on a post. I believe it's worth paying for.
G. S.
Very nice beach!!! Good surfing when NE swell... no crowd, watch the rocks!!!
R. K.
Because of its isolation, the $5 charge to use the private road, and the great restoration work done by the MOWS volunteer group (funded by council and doc) this is a fantastic site right at the entrance of Waihi Estuary. Across the water from dotterell point (on the pukehina side) so on a good day you might see one of these rare shorebirds.
P. B.
Nice spot. Lovely for young families that want to fossick the rock pools around low tide. Spots of shade off the beach will be welcome during sunny days. Walking in is free, but any other way will cost you money to pay for the road. Looks like they need to spend some money on it soon. Frustrating to have to pay for private access to a public beach, but you can always go elsewhere. On the bright side, the access free keeps it from getting too busy.
S. C.
What a great place, beautiful sandy beach, it was very sheltered when we were there, the water was warm and the surf was pretty good, the kids caught plenty of waves on their boogie boards
K. R.
Love this beach , with granddaughter
N. L.
Out of the way but we'll worth it. Remember to take cash with you to contribute to maintaining car parks and facilities. $5 per vehicle. It's free on foot but a bit of a hike.
D. C.
Love this place. It's a swimming beach, diving beach (mussels), surfing beach and everything in between. Love laxing here as well as exploring and beachcombing right around the peninsula. The bummer is that you have to pay if you want to drive there. However; I've been told the money goes towards the upkeep of the private access road and toilet facilities there. If you don't want to pay, you can access this beach from little Waihi, in a low tide ;)
M.
You take a dirt road down the hill to reach this nice little beach. It's never crowded, the swimming is nice and if you're lucky there are sometimes seals that hang out there. Can recommend this to all.

Very hot that day. Not much in terms of facilities like toilets or picnic tables. Views are great. Beach is awesome
S. W.
another hidden paradise. a entry fee of $5 is required for a car, or walking to the beach is free which takes only 10minutes. totally recommend this place
L. K.
Nice beach. NZ$5 per car. No dogs allowed.
P. M.
Beautiful, access $10, at low tide makes for a lovely walk on the beech
D. S.
Pay a small entry fee as it's on private land. Beautiful beach though. Well worth while
M.
Best beach in the area. Bring $5 cash if you wanna drive down. Otherwise free to walk down and takes 10 mins. BYO water bottle.
P.
Not what I expected out of a beach. Suggest paying the $5 to drive down if you are not fit to walk up and down hills to get there.
K. B.
The best
