Reviews of Isel Park
K.
Wonderful park to bring children for a relaxing day out. Paths, a cafe with small playground, river and a frisbee course. Blessed to see lots of NZ wood pigeons feeding on tree fruits too
A.
Fantastic, historical, peaceful and quiet place, with a lot of beautiful trees and amazing gardens.
C.
Always a pleasant place to walk. Lots of different areas - tree lined paths, wide open fields, massive shade trees and even a stream. Great views out to the sea too from the top fields
P.
This is a nice, small park. There is some good history here, the park is named after the house which in turn is named for a town in Cumbria, England. There are some lovely large trees, and a bit of seating scattered around the park. Perfect place to sit and eat your fish and chips as it is quite sheltered. You can also walk your dog here, and there is a large field south of the park if you like to take your doggy for a bit of a run or to chase a ball. Be wary as some of the pine tree branches have been known to fall during high winds.
G.
Thursday - market day, wonderful food stalls, great crowds, music, dog friendly venue. Try different ethnic foods, go to the Isel Cafe and get a lively wine or beer, cider or non alcoholic drink with your meal. Gardens are beautiful and well maintained by the Council contractor Nelmac. A lovely jewel in the city's assets.
A.
Lovely wooded gardens to stroll around and learn the history of the family who used to live there. The house is well worth taking the time to visit (just a donation required to help with the upkeep of the building). Nice little garden tearoom too! And regular picnic evenings on the front lawns of the house, with stalls selling every kind of food, and a real party atmosphere for families to enjoy. A really special place.
V.
A very good place to visit and go for a walk with the family... The Isel House was closed unfortunately but we managed to wander around the park and enjoyed the mature trees and lush greenery of the park. You can also take your dog for a good stroll. No entrance fee. Ample parking too.
C.
Lovely gardens need at least half a day to fully explore. The market was a bit disappointing only some food trucks was expecting more craft and local produce stands.
T.
Beautiful little park with quaint trails around well tended gardens. Frisbee golf, picnic areas, cafe, museum, dog access. Large lawn for games too.
C.
Lovely to stroll through the gardens. Great Market on Thursday evening, lovely food with lots of options.
F.
Plentiful choices of tasty food and a relaxing family atmosphere in the beautiful garden and grounds at the Thursday evening Market.
J.
Fantastic park. Great dog walking, family area for picnics etc.
G.
Beautiful park. It's great for a nice afternoon walk (especially in spring). There is a cafe out the back of Isel House with lots of good food too.
R.
Nice quiet park with some very old trees and amazing flower selection when in bloom
C.
This is definitely one on Nelsons iconic places to be on a warm summers day. Whether it's a family picnic or a full on celebration there is plenty of room on the grounds of Isel Park.
J.
Stunning gardens with colourful flowers and ancient trees .The cafe is quite nice located at the back of Isel House.
R.
Isel Park is one of the older places in NZ. The trees are especially interesting, many of them from the 1850s, making them over 170 years old. What does a pine tree look like after 170 years? Only one way to find out. Our pinus radiata common name is Monterey Pine, sooo much nicer name! Many different species, very large trees including lots not often grow in NZ. The storm damage from a few years ago can be seen, but has been beautifully addressed. Must have been tricky when the trees are so tall. Spectacular if you like gardens!
P.
So good food from Black and Orange food truck at the Isel Market on Thursdays. Smoked meats fresh mixed salads and the Burgers. The best food I've ever had. I'm so glad to find these guys at their's new permanent spot in Mapua Wharf.
D.
Isel Park is one of my favorite spots for journaling and chilling out. It has a frisbee golf course and the market on Thursday is not to be missed! Great food and free entertainment!
P.
Great place. Well maintained and lots of rubbish bins and seating areas.
S.
Beautiful park, very old huge heritage trees. Good place to have a picnic.
P.
One of the nicest places in Nelson. The park is beautiful and it is a great spot to stay overnight if you have a self contained car.

Amazing spot, beautiful trees and park. Great for the Isel Market!
R.
Lovely place to walk you and your dog. Fantastic flora . Must see for yourself.
J.
Just stunning, with heritage trees being a neat touch. Would love to see an endemic section
J.
Lovely park with heaps of room to run around with your kids. Wide paths so you can easily walk around. Free Frisbee golf course as well which is fun as! :)
P.
Lovely well treed park to walk around although it looks abit unkempt possibly storm damage, will heal in time
A.
Great disc golf facilities. Fun time with the Whanau
D.
Popped into this place tonight to go to the market that is held every Thursday.Must say it was excellent with loads of different food trucks selling their vast variety of food. Great
J.
I come here to play my uke with friends. Such a lovely venue for a great summer sound
L.
Great gardens for a walk or a picnic. Plenty of old growth trees, flower beds, and roomy lawns. Plus a babbling brook.
If you've got time check out the 18 whole disc-golf course :)
F.
just a normal garden. nothing special.
but with a particular historic building.
but if you like a slow relaxed walk. You will enjoy it.
C.
Really loved the disc golf course here, some cool and unique variations.
B.
Isel Night Markets on Thursday are awesome! Great food and awesome atmosphere and dog friendly! The park itself is stunning with lots of little quiet spots with beautiful nature
R.
If your looking for a great picnic spot that's not too far away. A spot to chill, walk of a run, then this is a safe place to visit
P.
Great way to finish off the day at the market. Good food and good music.
P.
This is a great little park that's very well laid out and beautifully maintained. The gardens are stunning, particularly when in bloom. It's a great place to walk the dogs. On lead in the garden area and off lead on the fields. There's a cafe there but didn't try it this time. Looked pretty good.
Y.
Great frisbee course, with plenty of parking.
A.
Isel park is just a wonderful place to go for some family time or to hangout with your friends in general but it's even better when you can go to the things like the Thursday market and at Christmas time the twilight market. Highly recommend coming to this park to just have a chill time
K.
A great historic part of Nelson, lovely gardens and a great night food market over summer. Isle in bloom is beautiful.

The beautiful flowers in the gardens.See the old and beautiful trees and the lovely grounds. So enjoyable. Great place to visit.
K.
Love this park, lots of old trees and wonderful grounds. The freedom camping spot is one of the best in the city, only 3 spots though!!
J.
This is a lovely park and a beautiful old homestead. I enjoyed exploring the building and learning the history. The grounds are just wonderful - my niece takes her son regularly to ride his balance bike along the tracks. I will come again.
M.
Our favourite park in town. We come here a few times in a week. Great for little ones on their bikes, scooter. You can bring the dog with you, have a picnic, a splish splosh in the river, and awesome local events are happening here. Isel Twilight Market over the summer and not to forget the kids friendly cafe, the garden window.
M.
Always a lovely walk around
W.
Great park to walk the dog and there’s a few added extras like a homestead museum and a frisbee gold course. Thursday night is the best time to go for a visit. Local craft market and a veritable smorgasbord of food options to choose from. Gets. A good crowd and a busy but laid back atmosphere.
A.
The gardens were beautiful. And we went for the markets on Thursday night. Fantastic selection of delicious food. I almost didn't like it because I couldn't try everything!
S.
Great park.. BUT!!!! it really, REALLY needs to have its Disc Golf fairways trimmed up! Its horribly overgrown and makes it hard to see the public ahead. Also you lose your discs very easily. PLEASE Nelson council... do the right thing, and clean up those fairways 😁😁
K.
Great markets an food carts ,awesome grounds to relax in ...a must do !! Grand old yr 1850 built house made out of stone an brick to walk through also
J.
Wonderful place to be on a Thursday evening. Great food stalls excellent veges could do with more gift stalls. Not the biggest market but one of the best. And there is always fabulous entertainment plus Isel House is open

L.
Handy little freedom camping spot in Stoke. Only 3 spots so get in quick. Close to supermarket and pharmacy.
J.
Lovely park especially when the Rhododendrons are in flower. Also has a wonderful Cafe and Historical House. There is also a 18 hole Disc golf course, one of only a handful in the South Island.
J.
great place to relax and enjoy the sunshine
L.
An unexpected jewel in the heart of Stoke. A beautiful park full of flowers and a stunning homestead. Dogs welcome, with both on and off-leash areas along the park. During the day time there a cosy cafe and on Thursday evenings a farmers' market on the grounds.
K.
A lovely public garden tucked in the middle of Stoke. A beautiful place to visit during Spring or Autumn.
Concerned to see a fungus spreading on many of the shrubs...wonder if these plants need some attention.
G.
Isel House itself is a modest house and not much to write about. The gardens are a different story. The original owners had the foresight to plant some wonderful trees which have grown into fine specimen trees obpver the last century and a half. Imsusoect some of them are nearing the end of their natural life which is a shame. Go in Spring and enjoy the wonderful azaleas and Rhododendrons. There are two spectacular Magnolias one with blooms as big as dinner plates. There’s a coffee shop at the back of the house and a weekly market in the evenings where you can get great truck food.
A.
Lovely park. So cool that you can take dogs here. The kids like to take their frisbee to have a turn on the frisbee golf. Very lovely cared for gardens.
F.
Nice gardens ,great tracks beautiful
P.
Always pleasant strolling through this park & nice to refresh with a cafe on site. Toilets need immediate attention as only 2 to cater for large crowds & 1 was out of order.
M.
love taking my grandsons to Isle, they like to throw stones in the water.
C.
Really great spot to go for a picnic lunch. Good seating and plenty of nearby shops for getting food
D.
The park looks amazing at the moment with the azaleas and rhododendron in flower. Fantastic place for my dog to socialize with others also.

J.
Love coming for a safe walk with my toddler and a coffee at the café
L.
Beautifully kept grounds/historical home plus love the disc golf game!
T.
A beautiful little park located in Stoke, Nelson. A small cafe serves great coffee and cake and the summer season offers free open air cinema in the evenings. There is also a frisbee golf course in the park!
T.
Took the grand children to hide rocks at isel park today. They hid 8 painted rocks. Hid 8 last week in there. Very disappointed to only find one other rock in the park. Where have they all gone? If you have at home please return them. Great free fun for children to find.
V.
A lovely park filled with large trees and flowering trees. There is a market to be enjoyed on Thursday evenings. Isel park is ideal for walks, picnics, families.

G.
Best Park in Stoke, amazing trees.
K.
Lovely place on a sunny morning for early lunch and coffee. Unfortunately most items on the menu were sold out. A bit of a disappointment as it looked like a nice place. Good coffee though.
M.
A well looked-after park. Stroll through the park to Isel House and back. Visit in late Spring - early summer and you'll be rewarded with many beautiful flowers amidst the towering trees.
J.
Visiting for the first time. Loved the flowers.
J.
Superb market on a Thursday evening, along with beautiful surroundings.
T.
Great frolf course! Especially loved the 13th basket! Playing after heavy rain definitely ups the ante on the first 9 baskets! We skipped 9 for fear of loosing our discs to the torrent!
