Reviews of Te Puna Quarry Park & venue 'The Gallery'
R.
Great place, tranquil and very healing. The grounds are full of surprises butterflies at every turn and wonderful sculptures/art. The loop takes you right into the heart of the bush.
Would love to watch a performance in the amphitheater.
H.
What an absolutely beautiful place, at no cost this is a must see place to go, lots of things to looks at and photo opportunities. Some bits can be a bit steep so bring appropriate footwear if possible, and all effort going into maintaining this place is incredible so if possible give a little donation at the entrance 😀
V.
Wonderful walks and many, many gardens to explore. Artistic sculptures everywhere. The walks includes hills and stairs but it’s not difficult. Dogs are allowed.
J.
Beautiful place and not a super long walk so you can definitely fit this in your day easily. Kid friendly and so much greenery! The waterfall was great but would be better after a heap of rain. I recommend !
A.
Lovely gardens for the price of a gold coin donation, and dogs are welcome on a lead. We didn't do the big walk but you can see enough of the gardens with a leisurely walk around the lower tracks anyway. Recommended.
B.
Awesome views with Mount Maunganui in it. Great gardens and native plants and trees. Also nice bush walks with a waterfall. Kids enjoyed it and watching the butterflies. It's free entrance but there are
donation boxes at carpark areas to give a few coins. Take your camera or phone to take photos and bring water. Next time we will have a picnic. There are public toilets as well.
L.
Is such a awesome place with lots of different things to see. There is a large parking area, it's free or can give a koha to help maintain the place. Great place to get exercise or to look around take in the views or a place for the kids to have fun. There is tables and picnic areas as well as a playground. There's another separate walk to see waterfall as well

What a great use if an old Quarry. Great place to spend the afternoon, hated the few stairs we had to climb but views were amazing! The volunteers obviously work very hard to create the gardens and the sculpture park. Take a bottle of water and a camera
K.
Amazing garden. lots of sun, plenty of shade. Good views from on the hill.
M.
Run by volunteers. A really nice group of people. Went out of their way to help me relocate my monarch butterfly caterpillars.
The quarry park is so interesting I have already been back.
E.
Such a great spot to take the kids. Endless art and treasures to explore. My young kids (2 and 4) loved it. Older children also will. Great alternative to any playground.
K.
Beautiful gardens with little streams throughout. Great place to take the kids and let them run around. Nice covered picnic areas throughout the park. Views are beautiful and the butterfly garden has so many caterpillars and cacoons the kids loved it. We spent 4 hours observing the wildlife, plants, and rocks. It was interesting to see the old mining equipment and landscape of old miners. The staff were polite and friendly highly recommended for the family and especially if you love nature.
M.
The many dedicated volunteers, along with nature, are slowly turning this old quarry into a really beautiful park. There are plenty of walks, some a bit more exposed and steep than others. It really is a botanical park that includes some interesting sculptures, water features, etc. I've been a couple of times and will return again tomorrow with some friends.
M.
An amazing hidden gem. The area is beautiful and the views are amazing. It kept the kids entertained the whole time.
L.
The garden/sculpture part of the park is terrific. Wouldn’t venture out if you have bad knees (lots of steps and loose gravel) but otherwise fun —great views and plenty to look at.
The bush walk on the other hand is not fun; definitely no walk in the park. Steep trek, not many views (vegetation over grown) and really technical due to roots and slippery clay-like track. Would only attempt if you were looking for a calf-burner workout.
Ample parking and spots to picnic, park has water fountains and toilets too.
R.
Awesome gardens to walk through! The volunteers who keep this place going must put in so much time and effort! Thank you for your hard work guys. Te Puna Quarry is definitely worth a visit
S.
An easier walk if you set off to the right, interesting and lovely gardens and sculptures.
Fantastic views.
We recently hiked to the left of the car park; to the waterfall, the main loop and also the lower track. Took us about 2 hours. We didn't rush and took plenty of photos. It was pretty steep. We are in our seventies but walk quite often. Less, and shorter walks, since Covid!
We really enjoy Quarry Park and this was our 3rd visit.
There is an easily accessible sensory garden.
All well worth a donation!
K.
Love it!! Such a great place to visit as a family. Loads to see and do whilst enjoying the beautiful surrounds. Definitely best on a clear day.
D.
I just love this place and come here often. This is a really beautiful park for a stroll through the various gardens and walkways.
I love that I can bring my dog and that the place is never busy, unlike walking around the Mt.
The various sculptures stand out proud and accentuate the fabulous views looking over the harbour in the distance.
This is well worth visiting year round as the plants change with the seasons.
G.
Pretty place with a good walk and collection of plants. I loved the little lake and stream, also the equipments used to dig the place, talks history, also fun for kids to play around. Heard there was a wedding yesterday, it does seem like a pretty place for a wedding. The dragon was very pretty. I loved the sensory garden immensely with so many different plants with beautiful aromas.
H.
This place is free to visit and there is a donation box to support with the upkeep. You could spend a couple of hours here and its a good place to bring a picnic. On the way round there are musical objects which the kids would like (or adults.) There are great views to enjoy whilst your walking as well.
R.
Great spaces for picnics. Some good wide walking tracks for strollers. It's quite steep in parts, so not all of it is suitable for strollers or very young children. Lots of sculptures to find and beautiful green spaces and views.
Support them with a donation via cash in box on site or give a little page.
S.
A good park to spend the day with family or friends. Nice and big, you have a lot of different plants. Personally i really love it the theme about plants and arts.
You can see so many wildlife there. So manny different walks to do. Also you have a good place with tables to make a picnic.
B.
Absolutely stunning what these local volunteers have accomplished! Bravo and thank you! I felt really blessed walking through this amazing maze of tiny walkways and broad alleys, stocked with all kind of fancy plants and artworks of diverse sophistication, from the school project to the professional artist. The place has sun until late afternoon and in summer plenty shady spots, too. Bring some time, as it's quite huge! And all donation based!
B.
Awesome place for a day trip if your a local or out of towner like us. Best thing is it's free! but any amount of donation would be greatly appreciated by the care takers or volunteers who keep the place looking neat and planted (you can find donation box at entrance). Also dog lovers rejoice! They are allowed in the park as long as you pick up after them otherwise as the sign says (will be banned). I see this place more for plant lovers, kids who like running around and playing with outdoor crafts and instruments as they are scattered around the park and possibly tourists. Plenty of parking with shady trees for those hot days and they even have a function room that looks to be available for hire? Bring a picnic and hunker down with friends or family.
S.
A big shout out to the people who upkeep the park, its always a joy to visit.
T.
Well managed garden and clean.
It has great views. Teally enjoyed a little walk
R.
Wonderful place to explore. Different activities for children. Gardens and art work so interesting. Fantastic efforts from all the volunteers.
M.
Definitely one of the first 3 best sculpture garden in NZ. Been there twice and enjoyed it a lot. Better to spend decent time in it.
m.
Beautiful walk through native forest. Also a Quarry walk.
A.
Lots of interesting things to look at.. Gardens statues. Butterflies ... Bush walks with water falls and working water wheels.
Good parking and plenty of shade with seats a tables to take s picnic lunch.
Toilets available.
Super relaxing l.
J.
Absolutely beautiful the gardens here are well maintained such great art work & most beautiful view excellent place for photos I highly recommend
H.
You could easily spend all day there as so much to see and view is in credible at the top is worthy the visit
D.
Enjoyable and peaceful. Really really top effort by the people who created this. Lovely for the children to run around and the views are stunning. You really are with nature here. We had a pram. Some of the tracks you can push the pram along (we only saw that part) and other areas you cannot. Takes about 15-20 min from Tauranga. Take a packed lunch and enjoy. Ample parking once you get there but if you care for your car you will need to hose it off from the fine dust afterwards.
I.
Absolutely lovely place. The park features variety of gardens and exotic pants. The main track takes from 1 to 2 hours, and for the most part is accessible for a pram, except the lion stairs.
D.
Beautiful way to spend a Friday arvo. There was hardly anyone there. 2 or 3 cars in the carpark. So we practically had the place to ourselves. Haven't been in over 5 years, but still a wonderful experience. I guess spring is best. But you don't get so hot and sticky doing the walks in winter. And the views are just gorgeous, especially on such a clear day with no clouds or haze. So winter does have it's benefits here. A couple of walks were closed due to rockfall. But my son and I enjoyed what was available. Lots to see at every turn. Love that it's an interactive place as well as a place of tranquility. The Road-of-Dendrones (that's what my son thought I'd said about the plant haha)...now I'd love to see that made into something LOTR-like. Magical and magnificent! Will not disappoint.
G.
A lovely walk in lush gardens. Lots of sculptural features not all to my taste. Recommended for getting out and the views over the Bay.
O.
Really nice park. Gorgeous nature and several small tracks you can walk with different kind of plants on each.
H.
Very large park with a lot of walks. We did the main loop. Huge variety of plants, sculptures, and great views. The most monarch butterflies I've ever seen in one place. Wear sunscreen.
V.
Great place for a picnic and there are lots of walks, beautiful gardens and fantastic scenery. Great for all ages and it's free although there is a donation box. There's been tireless hours spent keeping it all in order.😊
M.
It was very pleasant even though it was winter. Will have to visit again in the summer.
The children enjoyed the musical instruments in the bush. Lots to see. Spend an hour there no problem.
A.
If you love walks, art, trees, plants, flowers, butterfly's, then this is the place for you.
The volunteers have made an amazing job in this area
C.
Beautiful rainforest type gardens built on the side of a steep hill. Lots of walks to do here, enjoyed both seeing the gardens and the great views. Bonus, all free.
c.
Love this place , one of my favorites, gardens are will maintained and always seems to be a flower and butterfly around, great place to go if on a budget
T.
Came here with the kids, great experience, they loved it. Would be awesome if you could camp overnight in campervans
C.
A beautiful place to explore for kids of all ages.
J.
such a awesome walk and it's free and dogs are welcome that's a bonus amazing flowers and views
Y.
Great place to visit. Plenty to take photos of.
Watching the butterflies is awesome
M.
Wonderful experience looking and exploring. Extremely hot day so we didn't cover the whole area.
S.
Such a cool place to explore, have a picnic with or without kids, love it!
T.
What a great place ! Was nicely surprised at all the different gardens and super view
D.
Always had fun in Te Puna Quarry Park to have a relaxing walk around the park. It's a history and nature coming together.
D.
Awesome place to visit and relax, some nice walks in the native forest, streams and waterfalls around. A few things to play with and see while you walk around. Great picnic areas all over.
D.
Kids love coming here. Plenty of space to run around and things to explore
P.
Orchids past their best but still great and magnolias magnificent. Always an interesting wander, mainly hilly though
P.
Very good place to explore on your own or with friends and family. Some good tracks here as well as flowers to see. A gold coin donation is the asking price. There is plenty of parking and public toilets as well. It's well worth the visit and so close to the main road with excellent views of the bay once you climb the hill.
M.
Excellent place. Great walks and plenty to see for children. Wonderful views
J.
Beautiful place to visit with the family. There was a wedding happening at the time. The bromeliad garden is so well planted and managed. Lilies in the pond are a great new addition.
C.
It is a good day for a family here. But I don't think I'd come terribly regularly. It is pram friendly but some of the hills are a bit steep. There's an assortment of things to see. Many colourful sculpture and pictures and mosaics are scattered around. There even a butterfly garden. You could easily spend 3 to 4 hours here so definitely bring good walking shoes and sun block.
D.
Amazing, free, loads of parking, stunning views
S.
Lovely walks amongst natives, butterfly sanctuary and sculptures. Walks for all levels.
V.
Loved the walk and the many varied gardens. Great place for a walk with the dog
T.
Beautiful place with great views. Good information about plants there and some lovely works of art, scattered around.
C.
The team have done an outstanding job - the park looks fantastic - clean, calming and just a great place to take a walk on your own or be with family. Place for a picnic and an area for younger children to let off some steam. Love going there and would recommend for anyone wanting to get out for some fresh air.
N.
Really good. A great experience, a good walk and very interesting plants and sculptures. A brilliant use of an old quarry.
I.
Awesome place for a walk. The volunteers do exceptionally well. Definitely worth a visit.
S.
Lovely place. Something for everyone. Would be nice for family picnic.
R.
Amazing piece of land that has been renvivated from the ground up to a beautiful haven for the extreme sports people and their doggies 🐕 too
D.
Wow what a quaint garden, lots of landscape features, love it, I will have to return when I have more time. Tuesday 5 March 2019.
A.
Te Puna has a lot to offer for exploring it has sculpture, plants, flowers & fantastic views. Involves easy to medium climb
D.
Wow... great place ..kids loved it. Do grab a map on the way in.
M.
Half of its great..going back to see the other half. The frog pools were a tranquil and beautiful space. We watched a Kereru up close gobbling the berries! This is a must visit for nature lovers!
It’s big so allow time to ramble.
S.
Was so tranquil! Spent over an hour, but happily could have stayd longer lots of walks and art work
M.
Awesome Place, great for the whole family. So much to explore!
L.
Lovely place to go for a walk around, and take lots of photos! So much to see, great for all the family. Easy parking and entrance, yet you have to climb upwards to go and explore around the entire quarry. There was a private function there yesterday, so the kids could not play on the Dragon, yet they had a blast on the tractor and exploring the quarry. Stunning outlook. Considering it is run by volunteers, I think they do a fantastic job!
C.
Great place to visit. Nice place for a stroll around. Excellent views and free although ots nice to leave a donation.
K.
Loved it. Beautiful mix of gardens, amazing views. Inspiration for all.
Z.
More than we expected😲. This place is amazingly kept, So much to look at and explore. If your into florna, photography, history and nature in general this place is a must! The volunteers here blew our mind🤯 they are so hard working and friendly so make sure you leave a donation for them👍🏻
A.
I brought my dog along and he absolutely loved it. But I would warn anyone who isn't 100% fit about doing the kauri walk. I didn't mean to go on it (I thought it was part of the main loop) but once I got through half of it I gave up and came back. It. Is. So. Steep. And if that's what you're looking for, great! But I wasn't. And really hard to hold onto your dog while navigating over logs and through streams. I learnt my lesson after sliding down a few areas. It also could be better signposted. I got lost a few times.
HOWEVER.. once I found the actual gardens I was very happy (although exhausted by this time). They are absolutely stunning gardens and views and I will totally go there again to see the rest once my legs recover.
L.
Great place to relax and revive yourself in the tranquility of the beautiful gardens.
K.
A fantastic walk though Gardens and sculptures.
Tracks are in good condition, generally gravel or dirt with reasonable inclines in some places. You have the choice of wide vehicle tracks or narrower bush tracks.
Lots of Tui and other bird life.
A.
An absolute delight to wander around. Only had time to do the main track in an anti clockwise direction. Was quite steep in places carrying a 10 month old in my front carrier but was rewarded with stunning views over Tauranga. My 3.5yo had a bit of fun in the musical garden. The cairn tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary was also lovely. Well done to the volunteers who do an amazing job.
T.
Wide range of walks that are suitable for a range of ages. Some but not all are pram appropriate. Would bring our backpack carrier next time for the little one. Mr 3 did pretty well for about 40 minutes, but the hills are a definite limiting factor.
M.
Beautiful gardens and great walking tracks.
M.
Huge amazing place full of things to do and see
D.
Quite nice calm park which is not very touristy either!
P.
Pack a picnic, fill up your water bottles next to the map stand and spend the day exploring this amazing park! With a fascinating selection of art & sculpture, beautiful flora and abundant bird life - This is an amazing place. Great for an energetic walk either through bush or a variety of different types of plantings, or a gentle stroll .
K.
Amazing gardens, wish we could have spent more time but kids were bored and not up for big walks up hills. Would be a lovely spot for a cafe and greek theatre season.
J.
This is an awesome place to spend the day with the family, good walking paths and plenty of things for the kids to see long the way.
J.
I 1st visited soon after the park was set up in 2000, it has grown with a lit more gardens added. It was a little disappointing as some of the gardens were not as well maintained, and the paths were not easily work able if you had mobility issues. Overall a great place to visit and get gardening ideas.
V.
First visit there....what a fabulous place to walk and so much work been done there.Loved it....good for my soul!
G.
Beautiful place . Volunteers do all the work . deserves a visit.
k.
Beautiful spot for all ages. Some great surprises for children, they want to come back. Thank you to all the volunteers who put all their time and effort in to the Quarry such a special place.
J.
Absolutely worth a visit or two. Stunning gardens and art work dotted amongst gardens. You can take a pram on some of the paths or use a baby carrier. Lots of shady spots to sit for kids, and an awesome dragon slide. Musical instruments. Blocks. Bridges. So much to keep kids interested in. Gardens are stunning, and the whole location is very special. We've been a couple of times and will definitely go back next trip.
N.
Attended a wedding here, nice spot. Good views from top and the canopy at the bottom is a great picnic spot.
S.
Awesome place to spend a couple of hours. The most monarch butterflies I've ever seen. A revisit in the summer time is on the cards
M.
Pack a picnic, fill up your water bottles next to the map stand and spend the day exploring this amazing park! With a fascinating selection of art & sculpture, beautiful flora and abundant bird life - there’s something for everyone here. Enough benches for small legs to rest means everyone will have fun, without getting grumpy ;) There is also plentiful shade, and tracks range from single dirt road width to marshy barely-there paths - so all level of trampers have something to look forward to. Remember your camera because there are some spectacular views of the entire area!
C.
A great place for a gentle walk. Lots of great sculptures to see or take a hike up the stairs to see the waterfall. Perfect place for a picnic with kids. Sit in the shade while the kids have fun on the dragon sculpture side!
S.
Created and run by volunteers, this place is a delight to walk around at any age, but especially with kids (there are lots of things to see and do like the music garden and collecting painted rocks). Watch out for the steep hills going up though, but thigh busting.
A.
Great gardens to walk with beautiful views. Ideal for the school holiday's for children to do for an adventure and get out of the house.
G.
Fantastic views clear out all the way to the mount. Wonderful variety of plants, the succulent and cactus garden in particular is very diverse and I saw many unfamiliar plants. Butterfly garden is also lovely to visit. Some steeper inclines and gravel paths so may not be wheelchair accessible in all parts without a fit person assisting, but even if you don't go up the lion steps to the top it's still great views from almost anywhere in the quarry. Amazing that it's all maintained by volunteers!
S.
Amazing gardens! We loved it.
S.
Lots of walking through fantastic gardens with art and sculptures. There are little painted pebbles placed for children to find so that's a cool games and they get to keep them if they wish. The monarch butterfly house is awesome too. All in all fabulous gardens with some great views and something for most people.
M.
Nice park for a walk or a picnic.
C.
Wonderful place to bring the kids! Stunningly beautiful!
L.
Beautiful walks, great views, little slice of paradise.
김.
There was good for kids place
and there was good walk place
F.
This is an amazing work of love and very creative. I love all the nooks and crannies of it which are dedicated to different types of plants eg heritage Rose's and butterfly gardens. I love the old quarry machinery and building being part of the garden. It's fun, inviting for picnics, has a small facility for hire and I could have spent a whole day here. Awesome work to all those who have contributed🤩
L.
Very cool family place to visit
S.
We were very impressed with the Quarry. The signage and directions were very easy to follow. We were lucky to visit on the day there was a small market. Well done to all the volunteers you've done a great job. We might join you.
B.
What great use of an old quarry. Many different walking paths and types of plants to see. The site is well laid out with different sections. there are plenty of short trails and paths for children to explore. My wife and I wandered through with out 5 month old daughter in the front pack. It would be quite challenging with a pram as its a bit steep in places. There are plenty of lookouts and seats throughout. There is plenty of parking and picnic tables nearby so take a picnic lunch.
R.
You will be coming back for this place to enjoy a nice bush walk and tidy park with garden. Plenty of parking spaces. If you are lucky enough sometimes you can see the plant show running in the main office. Overall it is a good place to spend time esp if you have kids then its a real Tauranga- Havanna!!
r.
a great walk with stunning views and a lovely setting. Great work by some wonderful volunteers: whe. visiting please leave a generous donation to honor them.
D.
Had a good walk with my wife, 5 year old and 2 year old (take carry pack for the small children).
P.
Very cool little gardens with a huge variety of plants. Enjoyed wondering around and looking at them all and the sculptures too. Pick up a map from the information sign by the car park. If you have time go up to visit the waterfall too
S.
Such a beautiful place for picnics and walks
J.
Beautiful park! Great place to take the children. Could spend all day here, as there is so much to see and do.
E.
Loved it here. I just stopped to have a little break from my long drive, and ended up staying way longer than I intended to. The gardens are nicely layed out and you can get "lost" looking at all of them and the art exhibits hidden inbetween. I highly recommend a visit!
J.
Lovely watery outdoor park
A.
Lonely place To go to with your family. There are little trails to follow and discover hidden gardens. It's a very cosy place to spend time at. I highly recommend. Do not forget a little donation at the end for the eonderfull volunteers that keep this place clean and maintained.

Every step you took there was something artistic to see. Great walks around the place with lil tracks off like a maze. Excellent for all fitness levels and for big groups. We donated to this place as i would hate to see it closed.
All donatuons were from the locals and we support them 100%
k.
Had my wedding here in the succulent garden its georgious
J.
What a nice spot to come and walk around. It's quite steep in places but you can choose how hard core you want to go. The sculptures and the planting are really impressive.
S.
The old rock quarry is a locally loved garden park and outside art exhibition – it’s wildly character has a real community feel ran by local volunteers having made this park their community project.
The quarry terraces are a must walk, huge vistas, green areas to relax & plenty of nature. A large car-park, well informed maps, shelters & conveniences provided, free entry or a voluntary coin donation.
C.
Awesome walk, amazing sculptures, trees and plants. Thank you to all the people who are involved in the upkeep and new idea's for the place...cool that it's dog friendly as well
P.
Lovely place, a bit hilly for me, ( as the name implies, it's an old quarry). But I managed some of it and really enjoyed the visit. All run by volunteers I understand.

Beautiful walk and amazing scenery looking back out to Mount Maunganui. Volunteers have put a lot of effort into the paths, sculptures and gardens. Definitely worth the trip.

D.
Great place to take the grandchildren lots of different tracks to walk, with great views of Tauranga and the harbour. Most of the tracks are steep, a fair level of fitness is required, will return again.

Te Puna Quary Park is a hidden gem of the Western BOP!
It has one major walking path, with countless side paths stemming from it, to explore. Along the tracks you will find well kept gardens, art pieces, benches to enjoy the view from, and a few open-sided huts to picnick in.
Entry is free, although there is a donations box if you want to help support the ongoing maintenance and improvements being carried out by the local, hard working volunteers.
