Reviews of Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve
G.
Well worth visiting and a pleasant easy walk, ride, or wheelchair and pram pushing venture. The tracks are well sign posted and with Scenic views. Added to this walk is educational information on the local environment and effects of man on this area
S.
Good place to capture pictures of Birds.
I went after a days work and was just in time before sunset. Approached from the Manly Street end. A short boardwalk takes you to the estuary.
Lot of previous walkways have now been re-routed to give the NZ Dotterels a chance to breed. There is plenty of birds to be found. Variable Oystercatchers, Spoonbills, Gulls, Ducks of many variety. Lots and lots of swallows etc.
People were catching fish at the mouth of the estuary and getting lucky.
Loved this short trip. Will surely come back.
This is a fragile eco-system. Please respect the signs. Dogs need to be on leash in many places.
D.
Great spot for a walk or photographing birds
A.
Beautiful spot for a walk. Lots of restored native wetland and bird life. Well established, easy walking tracks.
M.
Some great wildlife and the estuary is awesome. Didn’t see many native birds but not surprised as I also saw plenty of dogs off lead.
H.
This is a pretty estuary area found onnthe Kapiti Coast. The area has lots of plants, dunes and birds. It is great for a walk along the tracks and down to the water, both the Waikanae River and the sea. There are dome great views of Kapiti Island from the beach.
B.
A pleasant quietly picturesque hour or so spent exploring the area by foot. Flat track, wide enough for two people, but also easily cyclable. Part of a much longer 21km section of the Te Araroa Trail.
As it got warmer there were an increasing amount of wasps flying about.
D.
A interesting pleasant peaceful place to visit. The guardians can be overly protective and zealous at times
J.
It's good to see how the Waikanae Estuary is being preserved and developed. The walkway is great that takes you to Waikanae River or to Paraparaumu Beach.
L.
Nice walking and biking tracks around the river mouth. The tracks are well maintained with gravel paths and boardwalks. Well worth the walk.
P.
Nice place for a walk or bike ride.
D.
Lovely with easy walking and lots to see. Cormorant on driftwood in Estuary
J.
March2021: Easy stroll. Path is well maintained. 4 elderly men on electric scooters travelled through here. Well used path. Yes, lots of different birds in the estuary, lovely to see. The volunteers are planting, and trying to rid the place of the gorse & blackberry.
M.
A nice walking and cycling track through the estuary. Connects to the beach on the southern side of the river and with the rest of the Waikanae River park, trails, and beach on the northern side of the river. There is a footbridge over the river, wide enough to wheel a bike or pram. There is a public toilet on the southern side by the bridge, and on the northern side near the beach there is a public toilet, and freedom camping is allowed. The track can become pretty waterlogged after heavy rain, it's worth taking gumboots if there's been significant rain the previous couple of days.
N.
Lovely walk in a nice day if you're not walking around board walking turn around and keep going till you come out on manly st cross road you will see water drains go through the grassy lane think you come out at wake street cross road there to another grassy lane and water drains then you come on to masingard road cross that brings you out to playing field into Kena kena cross road there where you can find pathway to Arnold st onto left Martin st the other way by 4square at Kenakena another pathway end right of school brings you out onto another street brings you out onto corners golf road and Martin road very enjoyable walk
B.
Take your time, sit for a while and watch the abundant wildlife.

S.

B.
Perfect place to get some funny day
C.
Awesome walk, started in Manly street and did loop around swing bridge only took 2 hrs including stops for photos.
Lots to see whitebaiters and horse trekkers.Crossed 2 bridges and good to see more planting of natives.
Good shot of Kapiti Island from beach entered on Manly street. Lots driftwood great for bbq’s.
Also toilets half way on track and plenty places to stop and rest if need be.
J.
Beautiful piece of peace and nature along the beach!
C.
Great place for some river fishing or just a picnic with the kids. Good spot for kiteboarding as well.
Z.
One of the best walks in the area ! We love it!!!
Beautiful views, nice spots for picnic and rest. Must be on the list to visit for active people. Space for buggies / bikes
I just wish it had some spots for tap water to replenish water bottles.
E.
Saw a Heron, Pukeko, Pied stilt, Cormorants, ducks n Swans. The water in the river is clean and clear so there must be plenty for the birds to eat. The river banks are planted with native bush and trees. It was good to hear wood pigeons, Tui and see fantails along the walk.
L.
Beautiful expanse of almost deserted beach. Best visited at low tide with your feet in the water, being charged by baby flounder at the Waikanae rivermouth, or watching the tiny baby hermit crabs scamper around in the tidal pools. All overlooked by stunning Kapiti Island. Such a beautiful place.
D.
A very interesting place to visit for any nature lover.
J.
Awesome bird life
A.
The most convenient way to get from Otiahanga/Paraparaumu to Waikanae beach is over the Otiahanga bridge. While the river does often flood when it rains, when it's not raining the wilderness, trees and beach are a nice break from the concrete jungle around it.
Remember not to go fishing around this area because it's a marine reserve
E.
Always beautiful on the beach even in the cold 😁
J.
So gorgeous for a walk
L.
Great walking or cycling track through the estuary. Easy access to the beach, and not at all far to the Otaihanga Domain for further walks.
k.
Great to see all sorts of birds an be on the beautiful beach .
J.
Lovely walk with lots of birdlife, you can continue on over the river bridge to Paraparaumu if you are feeling very energetic. Or go to the next bridge up the river to the cafe.
M.
Nice coffee, sausage roll and coconut topped slice.
J.
Fantastic place for a getaway for a day or 2. Lots to do and very peaceful. You can only camp there for 1 night though.
D.
Great tranquil walk for the whole family.
A.
Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve is connected to the Kapiti Marine Reserve and to Kapiti Island Nature Reserve, providing a rare sequence of protection for animals which move between sea, river and land habitats.
This nationally-significant reserve protects a natural mosaic of freshwater lakelets, saltwater lagoons and marshes, tidal sand flats and sandy beach at the mouth of the Waikanae River.
The river and estuary is a tidal home and airport to a variety of waders and sea birds. More than 60 species of birds breed there, including banded dotterel, pukeko, dabchick, and variable oystercatcher. They occupy the sandspit where the river affords some protection from the increasing numbers of cats, ferrets, dogs and trail bikes on the other side of the reserve. Flocks of white-fronted terns, shags, gulls and penguins roost on land but rely on the sea for small fish and shrimps.
