Reviews of Roys Peak

If you runiing, going to a gym, taking stairs instead of lift or a casual walker you shoul definitely do Roys peak to test your fitness level. The track is easy.. No climbing, no tree roots or jumping over rivers erc.. Its flat surface which goes zig-zag to the top to reduce your energy. (GRADIENT). If you are good healt condition than it should be the easiest summit hike ever.. It took me about 2.5 hour to thee peak and 1.5hours down, but reccomend to do a sunrise (which i did) so that sun wont slow you down during your ascent.
PS: some people comment it as very hard or difficult but its not as its not steep climbing.
T.
Rewarded with spectacular views over majestic mountains and shimmering lakes. It's a rather tough uphill climb so best to be fit for this walk and prepared for all weather. Take it easy on the way down as it can be a strain on the ole knees.
L.
I was lucky and had a sunny clear day so the view was very nice. I started at 530am not because of the sunrise but because its alot cooler as you sweat so much with all the uphill. Plus by the time you get to the top its sunny and then walk down in the sun. I took knee tape with as my knees were sore on way down. The uphill does test you alot!!!
T.
Very rewarding hike with some of the best views and photo opportunities in NZ.
Taking just under 2 hrs to ascend and an 1.5 hours down I thoroughly enjoyed the hike as it is very beautiful but easy hike, the path is wide single track the entire way with minimal challenge. If you are planning on taking a few stops on the way up and down I would recommend planning for 6 hours so take food, water and a full charge on your phone or camera for all the great photos you will get.
Also if you are looking for a longer hike you can continue past Roys peak over a few more mountains which deliver some great views and take you down to Cardrona Valley Road.
There is a toilet near the summit path but due to the popularity of the hike I would recommend planning ahead.
S.
This is a popular track, so be sure to come early in case you have to park elsewhere. The track is about 16km return via same track, about 5~6 hours in total. If you don't have sufficient time, choose the spot you will be returning. The view is perfect at every spot, just gets better when you go higher. Take a day to walk here and enjoy the magnificent panorama view of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains.
B.
Great day trek with well worth it views. Slightly more difficulty. On sunny days, especially, bring extra water. There are two "peaks": the proper summit, and Roy's Peak Lookout, the latter being about 300 meters lower in elevation.
M.
Beautiful place with stunning views. Absolutely must-see when in South Island, New Zealand. People often go just to a viewing point to take those "Instagram" photos but views from the top are even greater. We didn't get the best weather and not all the pictures were perfect but still we couldn't be disappointed.
M.
the walk up to Roy's Peak is astounding and unbelievably popular given that it is an 6.5 km hike to the Viewpoint which includes 1000m of ascent. Many of those making the hike seem surprised to find it such a relentless climb, and may be ill-prepared in terms of footwear and suitable clothing for the alpine environment. On our most recent climb, you can see that it was steely grey and calm, with lots of mist wreathing around the mountains and making for magical misty views, but no sighting of Mt Aspiring. Please be prepared for a long hard, relentless climb which goes on for about 2 hours or 2 1/2 hours to the Viewpoint. The summit of Roys Peak is another 30-45 mins further on.
Because this walk is so popular, there may be many people at the Viewpoint, creating a queue of people waiting to take their turn at capturing "the" shot.
J.
The walk to the top is quite demanding. 8km of constant climbing, but the views are breathtaking! Don't underestimate the walk down, it's quite though on the knees :) Start early, so you have a parking spot and plenty of time to enjoy the views. Also bring enough food and toilet paper for the toilets in the valley and up the hill.
A.
God damn... That is not an easy walk, but it is a rewarding one.
I found that the walk itself was kind of boring at times, but the views from the top are amazing.
It's a real shame about the Instagram queue that forms at some of the the good photo spots... But you really can't do anything about that.
I would definitely recommend walking right to the top as there are amazing views up there... I would also make sure you bring bug spray because the flies are savage up there!
g.
It's not as hard as people say. Just do it. Gets snowy beyond the famous instagram spot but even then I managed with normal flat sneakers. Just be cautious and you'll be fine. Bring foos and drinks :). Tough hike, well worth it!
J.
One of the best views ever.!!!
Totally worth waking up early in the morning and walking uphill for quite a while. The view from the top of Roys Peak is stunning and rewarding. I really enjoyed starting the hike in the dark only seeing other hikers torch lights along their way, it isn't crowded at that time and no worries to find a parking. Take some tea and enjoy a little breakfast at the top when sun rises. Might consider taking some warm clothing and even some gloves in summer too as it can get pretty windy. I loved it !!
r.
Great hike, much faster than it suggests but should still plan to have that much time to take photos once you reach the top
M.
We went on this track on the queens birthday weekend. Wow what amazing views along the track. It was a bit cloudy. We went through the clouds onto the Top. It was icy and slippery all the way. But it was an excellent track. Would visit again.
R.
Great view of Lake Wanaka along the way. However, I won't classify it as an easy trek for beginner. No doubt the paths are broad, it's a trek that you have to climb uphill continuously for a couple of hours before reaching the peak. Way back downhill can have a toll on the knees as well.
C.
Great day hike. But be sure to start early enough to make the 6-7 hour trek up to Roy's Peak Lookout.
P.
Great hike. Takes you about 2 1/2 hours to get up to the Roys Peak and 1 1/4 hour to get back down if you are reasonably fit. It can be full from time to time, so people are queuing for the ultimate photo. Take enough water with you, as there are no drinking facilities.
M.
AMAZING AS! 1200 meter climb over 8 kilometers was exhausting. It took us just under 3 hours to reach the top. The views are absolutely stunning. If you can't handle the full climb, any distance you go will award you with beautiful views of the Glendhu Valley. You really should shoot for the top though since the 360° view is to die for! Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person on a warm day.
D.
Not the most interesting walk/route but great views from the top. Be prepared to queue if you want that iconic photo and bring a lot of water with you on a hot day.
W.
A hike to remember. Make sure you check the weather forecast as it cannot get really dark and slippery when it rains
A.
We started at 3 am which is the best time to do it. You get to avoid all the crowd of instagramers.
The hike in itself is just breathtaking and the views are totally worth the efforts.
S.
The view was amazing, especially looking over Lake Wanaka from the top. Do remember to bring enough water as this is not a short hike, and the track is quite steep
R.
Not an easy trek. It looks short on paper but it's very steep. Take plenty of water as the sun is scorching in the summer, and remember to pack a jacket even in the summer as the weather can change fast and it gets freezing at the top when it's cloudy.
H.
Totally recommended it on a clear day! The hike it self is not that much fun, but the views from the top are worth It!
V.
Amazing views everywhere. Worth doing the hike at sunset, if weather permits.
H.
Some of the best views I have ever seen.. Hard walk up the hill, not for the unfit.. Good 2.5hr walk up
M.
The easiest trail for a beginner. Fantastic views on the way to the peak
J.
Whole day hiking with my 8and 11ys children.Very proud of them.
I.
Great views but a bit challenging ascent:)
G.
Great views from the summit, easy walk, a bit steep but totally worth it .
O.
Best track, unbelievable view. Steep hill. Not for everyone.
M.
Must prepare for hill track, use lots of energy to walk and climb
P.
Hard walk but I definitely recommend to start it in the morning to see the sunrise.
S.
Amazing hike, extremely exhausting as it is just a constant uphill for ~3 hours, but so worth the views! Recommend starting in the middle of the night to catch the sunrise when you reach the summit. You can also see the milky way here at night. bring some warm clothes for the summit!
S.
Challenging but ultimately rewarding walk. The incline is relentless but the views are fantastic at all stages of the walk. I went up at the end of winter/start of spring which was ideal. The weather was perfect, cool, clear and with no wind. Take sun cream and plenty of water and in the summer take more. Also, start early and take some food to enjoy at the top.
M.
Hard work to get on top but it's more than worth it.
D.
Great and also challenging hike with elevation of 1200+ meters
A.
Certanly one of the best New Zealand track, without any need of silly wooden tracks like you often find in other famous walks, and without any money to pay, this track is an actual must do of the country. We went there in early June and we got 3 different environments. Under the clouds, gloomy and muddy. Inside the cloud, everything cover by ice and frozen. Above the cloud, sunny, with the track covered by ice in the beginning, then all snowy. I know they says it is cool being here at sunrise. We walked back with the sunset and it was very cool, but I would recommend doing this track with snow on the top of the mountain rather than in summer with no snow at all. Extremely recommended.
a.
Fascinating view, snowy, icy, muddy, rocky, windy in early June. Be prepared for changing weather. We start at 8.15 finish like 2pm. Do it in the morning might be better choice cause the track is still frozen or with snow (hard and not that slippery). When we heading back like 12pm, it’s muddy icy and slippery.
J.
Beautiful hiking area, although the hike isn't exactly rugged. Very steep, wide path filled with tourists in busy season. Be prepared to summit with numerous other people and spend some time waiting to get a picture at the top without people. Either way, it's a beautiful view. There are better hikes in the area.
J.
Awesome view, the climb isn't that hard but the downside is that is very crowded and if you want to take a pic at the famous viewpoint you need to wait in line. For us it was a 30min wait while some group were taking multiple shoot with all the yoga poses you can imagine 🤦♂️
O.
The views are unbelievable! A long walk up but so worth it.
J.
The iconic Roys Peak, perfect for a photo to send back home! But the walk to the top and should not be take lightly. You have to ascend a 1.200 meters to get to the top, but the views are so rewarding! Best thing to do is start around 4 am to see the sunrise, which is an astonoshing view!!
J.
Very hard hike. Dont attempt on a hot day unless you are very fit and used to steep inclines. Well worth the view at top. We did it in 5hours return and are experienced hikers
D.
I mean just look at the photos. It's 5-6 hours return, all steep switchbacks, but worth it.
杨.
Beautiful place for view, but the road is bad for walking.
M.
This is a serious hike that takes it out of you. It is an uphill battle the entire way up the snaking trail to the top. Be sure to take plenty of water with you and sunscreen because there is practically no shelter. The views along the way are incredible and the peak is absolutely breathtaking.
J.
Awesome views, 3hrs up and 1.5hrs down, take plenty if drinking water. Carpark still had parks at 0700hrs but only 5 or so empty - fills up quick.
D.
Amazing views but you need a lot of water and a high level of fitness. We're no couch potatoes but on a hot sunny day, we had to call it a day before the top so make sure you're prepared.
C.
Rewarding view while walking/climbing.
J.
Long, open grind up a steady slope to spectacular views.
A.
Come prepared, it's a long hike to the top.
A.
Great views from the top. Pretty steep inclines the whole way so your ankles will die on the way down. Make sure to bring plenty of water!
D.
I struggled to finish; would have been dragging myself for the last 30 minutes of ascent. However, the view from the mountain top is well worth the effort.
J.
Take 5-6 hours for return.
U.
Steep and stony way all the time up, but really amazing views to Lake Wanaka and the surrounding hills. Reserve extra time for taking pictures at the top.
L.
This track offers possibly the finest views of any day hike in New Zealand across lake Wanaka and the Alps!!
J.
View at the top is great. This walk is difficult, it will break your legs on the way up, and destroy your knees on the way down. 10/10 would walk again.
P.
Hard walk but amazing view on top. Between 5 and 6 hours for return. One of the best walk in nz
N.
Great Hike! Bring enough time and water with you. Jaw dropping views o a clear day! Highly recommended!!!
J.
A tough walk, very steep all the way. Same view all the way up, but you can see into the next valley once you reach the lookout.
R.
Really nice hike. Took about 3 h up.
J.
Beautiful views all along the way and at the top but I still prefer Isthmus Peak
C.
Totally worth the walk... It gets depressing.... But we didn't quit and the view is fantastic!
O.
Great! Never ending climp but worth it. Come early when it not so crowed
G.
Must do! Hard to walk up though!
N.
Exhausting but worth it! Bring water, hiking sticks and a swimsuit to cool off in the lake afterwards!
G.
Dont underestimate this one! No shade and an unforgiving incline. Totally worth the effort for the summit
P.
A monotonous switch back steep climb but worth it for the view on a sunny day!
N.
Great experience and awesome veiw
A.
A very steep climb with no flat breaks
R.

(Translated) From the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain, it feels very magnificent, and you can see some unmelted snow from the top of the mountain. Walking up the mountain from the foot of the mountain is full of animal stools. It is really all the way, the distance is farther than we thought. It took 4 hours to get to the photo spot. We went to the photo spot at the end of November. The photo spot was very windy and too cold, but everything was worth it. Good physical strength is 100% recommended~
