Reviews of Circa Theatre Cafe and Bar
T.
Circa provides a valued boutique venue with consistently good quality live theater. We are very satisfied with Circa and enjoyed the Natural Woman concert
A.
Brilliant experience comfortable seating and intimate atmosphere. Saw Ali Harpers tribute to Carol King fabulous show.
Z.
Went to see 'Things I know to be true', which was an amazing hard hitting drama. Really enjoyed the play and the theatre itself.
I can see this being a nice place for dinner and drinks before the play. The tickets are not too expensive and the place has a nice 'cute' vibe.
It has a great location next to Te Papa as well, so you can combine the visits into one afternoon.
D.
Great show. Loved the cast.
Their version of Cinderella was excellent. So funny.
J.
It is always a delight to go to Circa. From booking to leaving, it is a pleasure engaging with staff. We just attended Winding Up with friends, it was 5 star wonderful! Roger Hall knows us so well, as do Ginette & Peter. They entertained all with their relatable performance.
Thank you Circa see you soon.
R.
I came to the Alice in Wonderland pantomime here and it was excellent. Absolutely hilarious, highly engaging for the audience. Very spontaneous!
It was enjoyable for all ages, with topical jokes for the adults as well as kids that had the whole room laughing.
Would certainly recommend!
R.
I have enjoyed a multitude of plays at the Circa. We always have a good time there! This time we saw the play, "Elling", and as usual the theater cast was brilliant!
H.
Always a nice time with friendly staff, and great shows.
J.
We saw and heard a great performance from Ali Harper.
L.
Lovely place, looking forward to attending many more performances.
A.
Always a great little venue for pre show dinner or drink.
J.
What would life be like without the Arts, not worth living I would say. So grateful for their perseverance and they deserve our attention and $$. We saw “the Artist” wonderful show.
N.
An awesome little traditional theatre. We particularly like the Panto each year.
R.
A night at the theatre at Circa with the family has to be one of the most fun things to do in Wellington. It's a wonderful and iconic theatre that has just enough magic and grandeur about it to create an excitement in its atmosphere for anyone visiting - even before the play starts. Seats are wonderfully close to the stage to give a real intimacy for the audience. Seats comfy, staff relaxed and welcoming, refurbished Cafe and bar area very nice and well laid out - could do with a few more tables and chairs for theatre patrons. Carpaking easy at TePapa next door - all in all a wonderful asset in the arsenal of entertainment Wellington has to offer - and one of my all time favourites to visit.
H.
Was great, smaller than I thought but made it even more special
A.
Amazing show, Talented artist
G.
A complete experience - live theatre, wine and a srunbing outlook for afters.
C.
Was at Circa theatre to see The White Tree with grandkids.Thoroughly enjoyed the performance, made easier by accessible loos and spacious foyer.Ticket pickup a breeze😊
W.
Awesome Pantomime The Little Mermaid. Loved it
M.
Brilliant theater with generally very good production - the new restaurant layout is not great.
S.
Lovely wee theater with cafe/bar venue in the heart of Wellington's waterfront. Clean and modern on the inside.
E.
Great atmosphere and a good view of the stage no matter where you sit.
R.
An excellent entertainment space. Spacious bar and restaurant. Well polished professional theatre. Rants in the dark is hilarious. Don't miss out. I want to go again.
M.
Saw the wonderful conversations with dead relatives. Great venue with delicious carrot cake, brownies and hot chocolate. Alex Ellis treated us to honey oat nougat treats before the performance. My daughters tell me they want to go to the theatre more often. Wow! Thanks Circa for making a lasting impression.
A.
Fantastic place... friendly staff, easy to find a park... clean and safe.
M.
We went to see a play THE OLDER THE BETTER. A very good play with talented performers. The Curca theatre is awesome.
T.
Great location, lots of pubs and restaurants nearby for a pre theatre snack and drinks.
J.
Very tasty food and the staff are a complete delight! It’s also fast enough to get through a significant crowd in time for the show to start.
G.
Pantomime time? Oh yes it is!!!! Love it :)
A.
The shows are excellent, the venue is comfortable and works well. The cafe has great food. I love coming here.
D.
Great little theatre with two stages. Prices are reasonable and the production we say was very entertaining and well done.
S.

M.
Cute little place and then do some great shows
S.
Had a wonderful evening with my mom and friends. Always a pleasure to come see a show here.
N.
Brilliant show. Great cast. Lots of fun for all the family. Highly recommend.
W.
We have seen an amazing show. Mr Red Light. Very good performance from the actors. Thanks and all the best guys and girls (woman)
J.
A great theatre with top class shows. Tonight's was the Pink Hammer which was funny and touching. The theatre itself is well laid out, with an excellent cafe area for a bite before the play.
G.
Great theatre. Good plays and actors. Nice bar area with reasonable selection of wines and beers. Restaurant limited menu but food is good. However dessert selection poor.
Overall good value for money.
M.
Loved the "Cringeworthy" show. Facilities were great, friendly staff, good food
P.
Interesting space and good food in a great location. Good for a very reasonably priced meal.
S.
Easy to find and park. Great entertainment. Friendly staff, inexpensive night out.
M.
Loved Cringworthy...will be telling my chorus friends and others to go....might even go again myself. Thanks for a great reminisce😀
C.
Lovely little theatre with a gorgeous cafe and bar. We were defined from the back butt it was fine. I think there's only 9 rows anyway! Felt like an intimate evening at the theatre.
R.
Lovely little theatre with a great range of varied productions.
M.
Good show, nice size venue. (Wasn't so keen on people being shown to their seats in the middle of a scene.)
G.
Always great shows, cosy atmosphere, and helpful staff. I've yet to have a bad night out at Circa. Top notch and professional. They usually do a panto around Christmas if you're looking for something to do with the kids.
G.
Ok, again not so smart of Google to want me to rate A live theatre as clearly the reason I am there will be for the play rather than the theatre. Both plays I have seen there are 'cutting edge' and superb. The amenities are good but nothing out of the ordinary. So if you are interested in the play..go!
C.
Great theater's, love the fact there is a bar there to be able to have a drink and something to eat before the show.
D.
Always an enjoyable night out
Z.
Awesome little theatre with great plays and lovely staff.
E.
A great place to watch theatre
J.
We were a couple of minutes late so locked out for 7 minutes. Acting good, set good, story good. Always a unique experience
J.
Usual above average . . . but ultimately uninspiring.
k.
Great little theatre with excellent shows
S.
Wellington institution that deserves support, plus great location to have pre show drinks and watch the flow of people and harbour view
K.
Great cozy atmosphere. The children loved the show.
K.
A great show, good view and comfortable seats. Parking close by too
P.
This is a great little theater! I saw _Side_by_Side_by_Sondheim_ and completely enjoyed it. Stage is just the floor in front of the seating. Nice and close to lots of other great culture and art activities.
L.
Saw Rants in the Dark. Awesome. First time I have been to Circa. Seems like a nice place.
C.
Great place to watch talented performers in established shows
M.
I always enjoy coming to watch a show here when I have friends staying with us. Theatre can be a little cool sometimes so wear warm clothes
L.
Whilst the experiences from different performances do vary, the venue itself is very characterful and compact. The staff have been very friendly each time we go.
B.
I enjoyed a thoroughly halerious performance from 'The improvisers' when they come back to wellington I suggest very strongly that you go!!! Amazing performance well done guys !!!!!!!👏👏👏🤗😊
J.
Had a great night at the show Cringeworthy. Very well produced, good sound, set and choreography.
A great little theatre for intimate and up close performances.
The restaurant is a bit overpriced, the menu looks great but the plates underdeliver on arrival - small portions and many components on the menu description unidentifiable.
So go for the performances at this great venue but grab a bite elsewhere
K.
Viable venue. Good sight lines. Seats are not great/suboptimal
m.
Excellent in all respects apart from the seats being too narrow.
S.
Good selection of plays with great actors. Cafe and bar has nice selection of Café food and good range of beverages to have a bite and drink before a play or in the interval.
A.
Free water but sadly all drinks seemed to be alcoholic. Seating a bit cozy. HOWEVER. Actually enjoyed the space, fronty show and acknowledgment of Ray Henwood.
A.
Had an amazing time at #secondunit! Lovely old venue!
J.
Circa is such a wonderful theatre that puts on so many diverse shows. I love the variety and the talent that is showcased in each production. Always worth every penny. Thanks for being so awesome!
L.
Lovely venue seaside with a 5min walk to/from the city. Intimate theatre with a licensed in-house cafe, fabulous if you don't want to just knock your drink back before the show starts - take it with you!
Our tickets weren't allocated seating for this show, don't know if this is the case for all shows (arrive early) but the ushers were friendly and gave good recommendations for best view for this particular performance. Thoroughly enjoyable evening thank you.
K.
Great night out with three grandchildren we watched Alice in wonderland
A.
Went to see a great performance of The Pink Hammer and laughed lots! Before the show we had an excellent pizza plus the choice of wines is really good. The service and attention are also worth 5 stars
B.
Nice theatre, great for intimate shows.
M.
Great entertainment. Well acted shows
G.
Always a great performance hub with new things happening to keep you entertained
D.
Great performances. Gets quite hot. I would not eat here though.
G.
Dolls'House- saw this tonight. What an accomplished cast and thought provoking show. I knew how it ended but wasn't prepared for my emotional reaction. Well done and thank you.

J.
A must go and see Pink hammer. A great show!
A.
Fantastic theatre. We caught a panto for the kids. Great evening.
A.
Cool theatre. Right by the water :) some of the seats are a little cramped for leg room. But I'm tall :)
C.
Plenty of expensive parking nearby. Nice bar. Great shows. Small seats.
C.
Beautiful theater, great shows and friendly staff.
N.
Went to "Winding Up" and Tammy enjoyed it.
L.
Absolutely brilliant show = Cringeworthy, actors were superb, appreciative audience. Didn't want it to end. Meals are available pre-show.
M.
Great venue and class show!!
N.
Empty in the sun here while nearby bars overflowing. Recommended alternative.
H.
Absolutely loved the pantomime this evening! Great audience participation too 🙂
J.
Clean, tidy & pleasant place to take my grandsons.
K.
We saw a show called 'A travellers guide to Turkish dogs'. It was funny and heartwarming with great actors. Love theatres that support new works especially when they are top quality!
D.
Fantastic show. Facilities at Circa were great.
L.
I visited circa 2 to watch a puppet show The Black Dog. What a super show and great venue.
l.
They have changed the menu.used to be possible to have just a side salad as a snack. Not any more..
C.
Wonderful play tonight . The Pink Hammer Michele Amas 's last play
M.
Went to "A travellers guide to Turkish dogs". It was fantastic. The facility is veey pleasant.
J.
Nice atmosphere, handy bar, and great shows
n.
Awesome venue and brilliant play - "Waiting for Godot"
S.
Great food, amazing service, awesome waterfront location. Maybe the city's best kept secret.
M.
Loved it. Took in a Christmas pantomime with the grandkids. Great production with a terrific cast.
W.
Great to have a performance place nicely located on the waterfront in the central city.
N.
My friends and I really loved "Pink hammer" but found the dialogue
was not always easy to hear, perhaps you might need to look at adding a bit of sound. This also happened in "Joan" but last night was a little bit harder to hear.
Many thanks.
G.
enjoyable local theatre, nice end to offshore cruise day at museum
C.
Wellys best theatre at the moment.
G.
Always a play being that will give you memories for years.
J.
Ali Harper was amazing as were the bar and kitchen service.

J.
A great selection of varied shows at a good price
Á.
A small but awesome and modern theatre with the most entertaining shows in Wellington. From contemporary dance through modern remakes of old classical plays, to serious dramas you will find your interest here. I highly recommend them. :)
J.
Nice, intimate venue. Theatres are tight on leg room.
T.
Fantastic atmosphere. Definitely try for the Christmas pantomime - every year a diamond! New open foyer layout is a thousand times improvement over the old bottleneck. Really good auditorium acoustics.
L.
Good staff kind nice coffee, great toilets
D.
Great venue and show.
m.
Great for live shows.
P.
Loved the food. During alterations the ordering is interesting. But outside to a fabulous Wellington evening
S.
Popped in for a cup of tea to the joy of princes and pumpkins waiting for the panto. Brilliant view.
G.
Great venue and great shows
J.
You must see Ali Harper's show, The Look of Love.
J.
The Pink Hanmer play was excellent but the pre show dinner was lovely!
A.
Enjoyed the play the seats very uncomfortable not enough leg room
R.
I didn't see a show here but I drank at the bar, chatted to the staff and had a look around at the brochures etc. I've also spoken to people who put on/perform shows here, and from those perspectives, this place is real nice.
A friend and I sampled half the red wine menu and chatted to the staff. All the wines were nice to excellent (Cab/Mer is the best one!) and well priced.
The staff made conversation and we all had a giggle and I felt welcome.
There's obviously lots of different shows to see here and it has a slightly older "classic" theatre feel. But it's not fallen apart or been left to rot. I'd be happy to see a show here and people behind the scenes say its a good venue to work at.
C.
Sound still not good. All six of us found it hard to pick up lyrics
N.
Annual panto pilgrimage to Circa. Brilliant fun as always!
G.
Enjoyable theatre and good cafe

I.

C.
Had a great time at the panto and met the real Dr Bloomfield.
E.
Circa makes theatre so real. Theatre work involves many skills and Circa seems to have honed all of those skills. For theatre that will be 'very' enjoyed and always remembered, go to Circa. The restaurant at Circa was also very comfortable and the food and service was completely acceptable.
S.
Fabulous community performing arts setting
s.
Wonderful fun! Great show in October!
M.
Great plays. New layout works really well.
K.
Had a great time at the Unit 2 production!
n.

V.
Great delivery of a challenging play. Well done Jeff .
o.
A bit cramped, however the play was delightful. It really sucked you in. Literally
L.
Always high quality live theatre
M.
An excellent theatre to see shows
M.
Everything is 5 stars except the seating. I'm marginally taller than the average woman (and shorter than the average man), and within a few minutes of sitting I am uncomfortable. The seats are too close to the row in front, and my knees don't like being bent more than 90 degrees for long periods while I'm sitting. It's compounded by the seats being a little to low and not being deep enough.
The staff are lovely and helpful, I've loved every show I've been to. But the discomfort in my knees from the seats means I go much less often than I would otherwise.
C.
Awesome entertainment, great environment
G.
Great friends great panto
R.
A great place to sample Wellington's theatre culture. Tends toward more mainstream work from more established companies.
Y.

C.
Great Plays - good actors
J.
Great little theatre
c.
Play ( Jean ) was hard to hear. Not helped by actors facing away from the audience and irish accent too strong
M.
I've been in Wellington for so long and always wondered what Circa is all about, till I had this brilliant opportunity to work there. To meet the most amazing staff and be a part of operations and organizing some very high quality art and performance events.
There's a lot happening at Circa. We're in the right place at the right time. And it works best when you volunteer and help out whenever possible.
I'm sure it'll be a beautiful experience to look closely at :)
P.
Circa Theatre has had a revamp. The foyer is a wide open welcoming space with so much more room. The cafe has more room and there is even a view of the waterfront. The cramped corridor feel has gone. The 2 stages remain the same. A wonderful theatre venue in Wellington.
A.
Awesome, great set up, scrummy food.
D.
Excellent theatre.
W.
Great coffee
B.
Iconic theatre experience at the heart of the cultural Capital right on the wateefront. Opening its doors to wider audiences with more original NZ works in recent years. Quality performances by professional theatre makers. A physical overhaul has opened up the front of house area well, but the pre-theatre and interval catering service needs improvement.
J.
Great show, good seating
A.
Had the pleasure of run an event here and the staff, facilities and space couldn't have been better.
Deb and Co were absolutely fantastic at providing whatever we needed for the event with plenty of notice (they even let us come in before to test the space).
The internet was perfect for what I needed it for (important as I was livestreaming the event) I can honestly say that was the most reliable Internet I've ever used and I've done a lot of livestreaming.
Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to hold events here in future and look forward to coming back in future.
J.
A very interesting place to be
R.
Great local theatre for Wellingto.
L.
Funny, fabulous Xmas Pantomime as always.
O.
Always love circa. PSA is contemporary political comedy. 2018 proved to be humor at it best. Tearing all parties to pieces and ending in the usual explosive finale. This year's production was strong with song.
Circa is a center of theatre and platform for NZs finest actors. Thank you to all involved. Great venue, worth a visit.
J.

Excellent theatre.
K.
Circa Theatre is a great option when you're after a bit of culture in the Capital. I would describe the plays produced here as 'unoffensive'. At least in my experience, Circa plays are 'classic' theatre. If you're looking for something radical, new age or experimental, then Circa is not for you (perhaps this is why the crowd is often 80% grey-haired).
All this being said, I have seen a vast number of shows here and have enjoyed all of them.
A.
Premier live theatre in Wellington. Two theatres.
P.
What a fantastic performance of 'Under Milkwood' last night. Whimsical and funny with great characterisations of Dylan Thomas' wonderful play. We 4 punters thorougly enjoyed ourselves. Congratulations to the cast and production crew for giving us such a great evening.
