Reviews of Embassy Theatre
S.
Never have I ever heard such perfect and superior speaker sound in a movie theatre, or anywhere, really! (talking about the main auditorium)
Any octave gets delivered with utter power and dignity, so that one never doubts its capability!
Apart from the sound, the screen and interior and design is magnificent and a nice experience "at the movies".
The sound of the main auditorium is the inspiration for my own home cinema.
K.
It’s Wellington biggest Theatre I used to like coming here a lot to see all the big movies that would be out at the time. It’s has a good bar, good selection of beers and wine and not a bad selection of whiskey. The food selection is not that good. The staff give good service, and are helpful
L.
Deluxe screens are good no matter where you sit, comfortable seats too.
Grand is a great screen and most of the seats are good too, expect for the ones up the back uncomfortable for a tall person, and most other people for that matter.
All good facilities, snacks drinks etc.
B.
Watched spiderman here, being first time along with my partner and cousin here at the movies in the city from Masterton, young man at front desk wasn't quite welcoming. Which put me off as it looked like he hated his job. Asked about history of the building and places to see in Wellington, he had no clue and said I don't know places maybe look on Google... Overall the whole place looks amazing! The bar people were amazing as well more happier then the front desk and candy section.
H.
A must-go theatre in the city. Love the cozy and classy ambience which will bring you to a vintage feeling and somehow help enjoy every show. The movie collections are wide and in trend. Staff are really friendly. Just grab some popcorn and enjoy the movie!
B.
The upstairs theatre is massive, and amazing to watch films from, while the downstairs ones are more suited to the normal cinema sizes. The food and tickets are all pretty common movie prices, but it’s town location makes it so convenient it’s been my go to place for movies
R.
Saw the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King here during their special screening for the 20th anniversary. My first time to the Embassy and it was a lovely experience.
s.
Subsidiary of event cinemas with unique interior. With the same price, you'll get better seats than normal event cinemas theaters.
E.
Theatre itself was great but there was no crowd control before entering the theatre which meant that the line took up the entire lobby. Better crowd control or having self service tickets would help a lot.
M.
Great old theater with a classic atmosphere but well equipped with excellent modern sound and projection. A nice sunny cafe upstairs and cozy, stylish bar downstairs. The main theater is huge with a big screen and at $10 for any ticket it's an amazing deal. I would be a regular if I lived nearby.
e.
Beautiful world class theatre! The meticulous attention to every single detail during it's restoration and operation today is sublime. Real professionalism at every level. Dedicated vision and on-going love affair for this theater and it's city.
S.
Watching movies in Embassy theatre is more like visiting a historical place. It was built in 1924 and even with remodelling, the owners have kept the architecture as it is. It has massive mirrors on both staircases. There are multiple screens inside the theatre, there are a cafe and a bar as well. Enjoy whichever is your go-to!
Due to its old design, the seats in the theatre are small, which makes it a little difficult to sit if you have long legs. It has very small legroom.
Fun fact: The seats inside the theatre have small nameplates on them. Look on either of the handles and you'll see a name written on it.
H.
The Embassy Theatre is New Zealand's grandest picture palace.
This historic theatre, originally built in 1926 was fully refurbished inside and out in 2003 for the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Since then, the theatre has hosted the Australasian premieres of Peter Jackson's King Kong and The Lovely Bones, among many of Wellington's finest film and arts festivals.
It's also where the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journeywas held on 28 November 2012: view our photos of the red carpet celebration.
An iconic Wellington landmark, The Embassy is situated at the head of New Zealand's famous entertainment precinct - Courtenay Place - drawing people in to see movies in a real cinema environment that is lost in the modern multiplexes.
The Embassy has retained many fine features such as its marbled staircases, wrought iron handrails, original tiled foyers and exquisite plastered ceilings despite many upgrades over the decades.
With this to build on, the refurbishment included a new, giant cinemascope screen and state-of-the-art sound system; luxury seating; stylish environs and a restoration that is faithful to its origins of the last century yet sympathetic to the new millennium.
December 2011 marked another event in the Embassy's history with the opening of two new boutique cinemas and lounge bar in the space created by the 2003 refurbishment. This area was home to original orchestra pit used in the 1920's and 30's when playing silent films.
The two new cinemas house 70 seats each and are named deLuxe after the original name of the building.
The lounge-bar combines historical opulence with a modern twist - definitely a space to check out and enjoy a New Zealand wine, cocktail or a warm cup of coffee next to the fireplace on a winter's day
P.
Best in Nz, quality and tradition. Their chocolate coated kapiti plum ice creams are a gem. Super comfy wide seats, great sound and if you know the number, you can book Frodo's seat!!
S.
My local cinema for the past year. Love the Grand screen. Black Sparrow bar is great and the cafe near the Grand has everything you need. You can buy a coffee, wine, beer, cake, popcorn, all kinds of meals. A million miles from competing cinemas.
R.
Clearly it's a great theatre. Steeped in history is wonderful in many regards, great place to watch movies as it had great picture and it's sound system is amazing.
Only criticism is if you're not in the comfy leather mid row seats, the rest are incredibly uncomfortable. I've noticed this the past few times and have had others comment too, which takes away some of the enjoyment of watching a movie. They're well overdue for a refurbish with some actual cushioning...
E.
Beautiful space, nice cinemas, beautiful big screen. Yummy snacks to take in with you.
J.
A great historic theater with all the modern convenience you require. A good place for a family film.
d.
Great cinemas , we picked the perfect seats last time as it was right in the center and very comfy seats
H.
Amazing theatre with lovely staff. Food and drink was a bit expensive though.
M.
The seats are thrashed, "leather" arms competely ripped and not nice to sit in. A long way removed from when it hosted A list celebs and movie premiers. Quite sad
F.
Absolutely huge theater when I went there to watch avengers endgame! They have a really nice bar area and their prices aren't astronomically high. Would recommend getting the nicer seats for $3 more as the stock seats have little legroom for those with longer legs.
F.
Extremely welcoming team. Sadly the government removed the right of those who doesn't want to have his health decisions inspected to just watch a movie.
R.
Great movie experience but the grand cinema doesn't have cup holders
S.
The ultimate place to go to the movies in Wellington. Dolby Atmos sound. Staggering sound system. 10 out 10 for the Embassy from me.
B.
It was if you were going back in time, what a Beautiful Building housing this majestic Theatre. I have not been in a similar Theatre in the last 30 years.
Imagine the Beautiful gowns that were worn by the ladies and the suits by the gentlemen in the 50's and 60's. The marble stairways with two massive antique mirrors and the the tiles on the walls with such beauty.
The restrooms also have the gorgeous wall mirrors, wood works and awesome tiling on the floors and walls.
The ground floor walk down the passage way the the Theatres was spectacular.
The Theatres are quite small and compact with an average if about 50 seats.
Real comfy luxury seats and good around sound.
We thoughrly enjoyed the movie.
Very highly recommend to all future movie goers, come and enjoy an experience from the past in today's modern surroundings, support our local community and bring your family and friends.
L.
Love the place, so cozy. Service was great too. Loved the experience when entering the ladies room. Deluxe room chairs were comfortable but could use some renovations.
A.
owned by peter jackson. i saw Fellowship here on acid. amazing.
J.
Stunning theater! Restored by Peter Jackson to all its glory.
m.
Went to see Spiderman no way home. I quite enjoyed it but the person I was with didn't. ;/
V.
Enjoyed going back to a movie after quite a while. Great theatre :-)
D.
I like seeing movies here but I never get anything from the snack bar as it's always overwhelmingly busy and super super slow. It's also right in the middle of where you enter the theatre so super confusing to know if you're even in the right line.
Great theatre for movie watching tho!
Love the Q&A sessions you do
R.
Fantastic as always. Great to see so many people enjoying the Grand Cinema.
M.
Very good and big cinema. Just cinema 1 that's a bit cold, but there's nothing you can do about a cinema that big.
J.
We hired out the black sparrow and one of the small theatres for a work function and everyone agreed it was the best function we’ve ever had. The manager there is also amazing to deal with - made things so easy and enabled us to make the event unique and special. The staff were also great. I couldn’t recommend this place more highly.
m.
One of the great cinemas. Superb presentation with a large screen and ATMOS sound. Seats are comfortable and roomy and the staff offer great service. Only negative is that it gets superb crowded and stuffy when a session is sold out.
H.
Probably my favourite cinema, lovely seats, great size screen, good opting of food and beverages. The only thing stopping this from a 5 star is that we bought a family pass for a movie assuming are 4 person family could go. Turns out the movie was R13 and they wouldnt let us in and didn't give us a refund there. Overall a great cinema. Definitely would recommend, just don't but anything until they confirm the rating.
E.
A Wellington treasure. Makes going to the movies really special. Such a beautiful venue.
J.
There to see The Dreaming from @OfficialMonstaX. The staff were great, the seats were comfy.
A.
Beautiful theatre, nice and tidy. The staff were really friendly. The food was good, and the coffee was great too
C.
Spacious room. Good view even from 3rd floor. TV in lounge had no sound on TV 3 and only half as many channels as TV in bedroom weird. Dish cloth and tea towel but no dish wash liquid for dishes. It's the little things. Overall pretty good.
D.
Great venue and location for dining in with a theatrical experience. A very unique architectural design and can house a large number of customers wanting to watch their favourite movies. Food and customer service is good.
P.
Great screen and sound system but the seats are well past their prime.
E.
Reminiscent of the old classic theatres. A trip to times gone by before the multiplex.
Y.
As soon as I walked into, I had fell in love with it. I watched a movie in it and the comfy, wide leather seats are superb!
M.
My Favourite theatre. The Deluxe service is worth the extra
A.
Amazing place to go and see the old style cinema.
N.
A much more special experience, due to the amazing decor and historic character.
T.
A quietly lovely main theatre refurbished for Peter Jackson's Tolkien film era with wonderfully period toilets! There are a couple of smaller theatres too downstairs as well as a café, Blondini's, upstairs: a pleasant place to socialise even if you're not at the theatre for a film!
Pretty much every year there's a party showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show which is a blast!
L.
Lovely cinema. Cosy bar and friendly staff. Easy to become a cinebuzz member so you can get good deals.
P.
Treat yourself to a Phantom of the Opera type theater for your movies experience
T.
Seats are comfy and the concessions are the expected wildly inflated and no more.
Only major negative is that in a cinema that holds hundreds the men's toilet had literally 1 stall...
J.
Probably my favourite theatre of all time. The Grand screen is massive with an incredibly impressive seating arrangement. Get the cushy premium seats if you can. The deluxe screens are smaller but more modern, with equally comfy seats for a great viewing experience. My only complaint would be that sometimes the grand screen can be a bit loud sometimes, but nothing that would ruin a film.
M.
Cinema 1 is a large theatre upstairs with a steep incline. If this is your first visit be sure you are fully mobile if you book seats in the top rows as it is a steep climb to the top. If you are in a wheel-chair or have mobility issues opt for the seats closest to the balcony, near the aisles / entrance. The seats are not as wide as those in some cinemas. Acoustics, room temperature and service are fine. As for the audience they do observe the rules so everyone gets to enjoy the movie fully.
Cinemas 2 & 3 are much smaller and located downstairs. Access these via the "tunnel". Seats are more comfortable than in C1 (which in turn are larger than City Gallery's). Screens and acoustics are fine. Accessibility is better for the mobility-impaired.
Booking: If you book tickets in person you will be shown analogue, cardboard, seating plans where your seats will be picked for you. You won't be shown the online plan where ALL the empty seats are visible, so book online if you prefer to wield more control over your choice of seats.
Also be aware that when those cards are shown to you it is UPSIDE DOWN, so get your head around this or turn the card 180 degrees round, otherwise you could unwittingly end up with an undesirable seat!
R.
Only the city of Wellington's pride and joy film theatre. Many happy memories, quite the shifting century heritage Good quality atmosphere, products, service; and meets expectations considering the low amount of staff.
M.
Amazing service as always, great memories made today. The magic in this place is something everyone needs to experience. Even though i have long legs, i still enjoy the movie and experience immensely.
I.
its a nice place and the staff is very helpful, just don’t get tickets for the screening room on the level floor, they are very poor designed.
M.
One of the best theatres in the country (Grand Cinema) , a must do if love film
J.
The theatre is still looking spectacular. One concern however, the floor tiles in the entrance foyer are cracking and some are missing. This may be a result of the earthquakes at the beginning of the year. It would enhance the theatre if these were repaired and replaced.
S.
Main cinema was huge. As usual very overpriced though.
J.
I loved the place. Wow the ambience, the choices of food & drinks, the staff and the cleanliness of this place is pitch perfect. This was my second time with and I had a blast. Went for a couple of movies with my friends and had so much fun. The seats are comfortable and it is a lovely place to hang out, eat and chill. Thanks TEAM for making me feel like home again.
S.
Come here to take "seeing a film" to the next level. An old theatre, refurbished with a ton of love. The Black Sparrow bar down below offers a wide array of unique cocktails, and The Grand offers a massive cinema screen with amazing sound.
Come here for an incredible cinema experience. I always try to see big blockbusters and epics in this theatre.
A.
Movie experience good. Love the embassy
L.
Good sized theatre & friendly staff.
N.
Best theater of NZ!!!
SUCH A GREAT HALL
V.
Wonderful theatre I've had many fond memories here. Staff deserve all the best as they work so hard to make it a great experience. Highly recommend a visit
P.
Very nice restored grand style cinema with art deco finish. Very comfy seats and great sound system. Biggest screen in Welly.
Also small cinemas next to the bar under the main theatre are very nice for a more cosy experience. Great seats and viewing from all seats.
H.
One of the most iconic movie theatres in New Zealand. Elegant and classy. Going to see a movie here is extra special. There is one huge theatre which is always full during the release of new films. Also the venue for the red carpet releases of many films including the Lord of the Rings films. All the facilities are very good. Not cheap, but worth it.
B.
What a grand old lady. Beautifully restored period architecture. What a grand way to watch a movie. Has all the features to spend an awesome afternoon or evening with food outlets from coffee and patisseries, great, well stocked bar with attached seating arrangements, or your standard popcorn and sweets to enjoy with your movie. Lots of attentive friendly staff. An awesome comfortable movie hall as well.
A.
It all depends on where you sit. The front half of the cinema is great, with big confirm seats, amazing sound and a great view of the huge screen.
However, the back 10ish rows are on deeply uncomfortable seats, the sound isn't loud enough to hear over the munching of your neighbors and you are so far away from the screen your be better going to a small theater
e.
Great atmosphere in this cinema.. was quite surprised how dated the foyer looked though... the only let down
R.
Theatre style is old as (1920s), but is functional.
Just not my my style preference
J.
I've only gone once, so take this with a grain of salt.
It was really good. The building looks good, everything was clean, including the toilets. Service was really quick and they had popcorn ready to hand out rather than having to fill a box after you pay for it (although that may have been because it was the second day of Rogue One, so they probably needed to go quickly).
The theatre itself was really nice and the sound was really good. My vision wasn't blocked by anyone, although I don't know if I could say the same if I was shorter.
The seats were a bit uncomfortable. There was no support for my head and the armrests were really small; you could probably fit half an arm on it. There also wasn't much space in front of the seats so when people had to walk past I had to tuck my legs in really close.
However, it was still a really good theatre and I would recommend going to it.
A.
Love going here. A little on the pricey side but I reckon it’s worth it. Great for a night out. A cozy cinema making it feel more personalised when you watch the film. I love ordering food and then getting pizza and fries delivered to you in the movie. Really is a nice little experience. Would be good for a date night.
B.
Very cool!!! Came here for the first time to watch Into The Spiderverse, and I loved it. The prices for the movie ticket and combo food is great. I kinda thought the medium drink size was a bit small but it was just the right amount for me.
I liked the look of Embassy, looks so fancy and cozy to be in. The theatre I was in specifically, was very nice, small and comfy. I also applaud the lit up numbers on the sides of the seats. Very easy to find my seat.
C.
Fly My Pretties' new album release, quite an experience gigantic theatre nearly full.
R.
A truly great theater - the main cinema has wonderfully comfortable seats, huge screen and fantastic sound system. The staff are all great and the facilities are grand. If you are after a truly great cinema experience then the Embassy would be the gold standard in Wellington city - the evening we went to the Embassy was the premier for Mary Poppins return - free champagne, orange juice and ice creams for all guests made for a very memorable and exciting night out for the family - a credit to the theatre owners and a gem for the city.
S.
Lovely theatre with food and beverage area upstairs with comfy seats in both. Good acoustics and screens with the theatre with stunning art deco features in all areas. Highly recommend.
D.
Amazing place. Any lit movie that comes out there go to that theatre as well as reading cinemas all the best content.
J.
I love the interactive Rocky Horror screenings, wish they were more regular but I can only imagine the absolute shambles the staff is left with afterwards.
T.
An epic movie theatre. Always a great experience.
C.
Beautiful building. Always make the effort to head to screenings of films have been looking forward to, so I can have the full sound and vision experience. Even the smaller cinemas are cozy and Blondini's and The Black Sparrow are great spaces to enjoy a treat and wait for your film to start.
L.
One of my favourite cinema experiences. It doesn't have an IMAX screen, but don't be fooled. The main screen is plenty big enough. Awesome Art Deco feel to the building, really well renovated and awesome little bar through the walkway. Even the smaller screens are cool. Comfy seats and food and drink service to your seat. A+
K.
Always love this cinema. It's clean and luxurious feeling and the bar is lovely. Really feels like you're "going out" when you go here. The sound and picture don't suffer from the "boutique" theatre setup.
c.
This cinema is great superior seats and amazing bar
I.
Huge cinema with nice seats and large screen. Beautiful building interior. I would recommend to purchase tickets online as it's a lot faster . Allocated seating .
S.
Whilst The Embassy is a great place to watch cinema and it holds a special place in my heart, unfortunately this time was not up to my expectations. I usually love The Embassy, and whilst I was still emersed in the experience, the film started out pixelated (sorted out very quickly) and the sound occasionally cut out (continued throughout the film). As this was a re-screening of Inception I am more than okay with putting this singular poor experience behind me on account of the fact that I have shared many great moments in this place and that I still walked away with gratitude knowing I experienced this masterpiece as it was meant to be seen (kind of). I would definitely recommend The Embassy.
J.
Best cinema in wellington to be at and to watch an awesome film
I.
Love this cinema - quite a large place but a great atmosphere.
Went and saw a few cult classics (like Flash Gordon) here as well as a few new releases.
It’s got a nice bar with interesting architecture and it’s perfect for a nicer cinema experience.
N.
Pleasant experience ☺ comfortable seats
C.
My favourite cinema in Wellington. The main theatre is very grand and makes the cinema-going experience feel quite magical. The Black Sparrow bar downstairs has amazing desserts, snacks and cocktails - definitely worth a pre or post-movie visit.
T.
Saw Blade Runner 2046 here on opening night here and it was an amazing experience. The screen and sound are excellent. The chairs are comfortable without any of that lay-flat bed nonsense that the big chains seem to be going for (I am 191cm tall and the reclining seats are very uncomfortable for me).
There was a good crowd and a great atmosphere. The cinema itself is gorgeous- I’m sad I didn’t get the chance for a drink in the bar or to hang around. The box office is an actual wooden box that two attendants stand behindto serve you.
A brilliant experience from start to end and one that I will repeat each time I am in wellington.
P.
Sat in cinema one near the right wall - unfortunately the acoustics weren't great and space was merely adequate. But the theatre was pretty. Might be better during a film that isn't sold out and you have better seating options
张.
good place and some time have Chinese movies
B.
Sat in the back row. Didn't realize the seats were uncomfortable, cheaply made and there was no room for my legs. Had I known I would have selected nicer seats. It was a distraction the entire film
E.
Expensive tickets, but big screen (The Grand), and good sound. I wouldn't go to the Deluxe screen unless the movie wasn't on in other cheaper cinemas that have more convenient parking.
T.
Wonderful venue, especially when there's not many attending. Not only do have a large space to yourself but if it is crowded, then you really feel the emotions. Several sessions and a large variety of programs and promotions all showing which makes everything that much more worth it. Cafe for small nibbles and coffee, bar for drinks and more refined snacks, and a snack bar for more conventional movie going food. Overall wonderful, 5/5!
T.
The bar is amazing with quality top shelf liquor. A must to try
J.
Good sound for an old cinema. Beware too that the back seats are way up some flight of stairs but the view is great.
D.
Beautiful Theatre. First visit since upgrade. Well done.
Very comfortable.
E.
Absolutely beautiful theatre that is well worth a visit. Classic old-style architecture combined with new technology made this a fantastic date night. The bar inside was the perfect place to hang out before and after the movie.
S.
Lounge area amazing and comfy chairs. Dont recline though. Screen is small however volume good. Food was absolutely disgusting. I ate it because I was starving. I had the Moroccan wedges and onion rings, they were burnt to a crisp. The onion rings were horrendous barely any onion and batter so so burnt. Best thing...the sauce. All in all...eat before you come to these theatres
A.
Really beautiful layout when you enter the cinema and they normally have an excellent selection of films (both Hollywood and independent).
It was really odd that our E Tickets didn't work, we literally had to go to the cafe, get our tickets printed then return back to the main door for them to rip and dispose of our tickets (really backwards).
The bar here is also the most expensive bar I've ever been to $11 for a bottle of cider (this cider was brewed in NZ as well)
The actual cinema screen was pretty big, but the film doesn't play on the whole screen and you are sat reasonably far away from the screen if you're sat near the back.
Overall, it's not a bad cinema but I'd consider going to another instead of this one if I had the choice.
R.
This place is an institution.
The building is beautiful. Grand, tall, winding staircases and big mirrors, thick carpet and marble floors. I could be at The Stanley Hotel.
The screen is huge. I mean ginormous. The theater could probably seat 300+ people.
This place feels old school and I love it.
J.
This is one classy movie theatre. The Grand theatre is a fantastic big screen space. It shows a big range of movies too ... we just went to see Hitchcock's Psycho - excellent on the big screen!
P.
Great cinema with excellent staff. The sound quality of both the small and large screens are spot on! It also has a nice bar on the ground floor. Highly recommended
O.
I've had more of my own films shown here than films I've actually watched, and that's a surreal experience. The screen is tilted backwards and the rows of seats are steeply slanted; the giant white roof extends into your peripheral vision. Sound is loud, though not quite XtremeScreen level. Seats are very nice. The names of the people who sat in them for the LOTR premiere are engraved on plaques.
M.
Beautiful venue which will take you back in time to when a trip to the cinema was a special outing. Modern comfortable seating and all the usual snack options. A trip to Wellington should definitely include a trip to the embassy. And it may sound strange, but dont leave without visiting their bathrooms (it'll make sense when you see them).
G.
So much nicer than the Courtenay Central cinemas, always much cleaner and better kept. The prices are a little higher but if you get their rewards card it's only $10 per ticket. Even their small theatres are nice, although the layout of them is a little awkward.
E.
The prettiest cinema I have ever been to. You feel like you're in a movie yourself. It's very luxurious and yet tickets are inexpensive. Staff are helpful & it has such a nostalgic feel to it like you're in an era gone by (seriously there's a fireplace in the waiting area) My go to movie theater here in Wellington & it's the best place for a movie experience.
Z.
Cute little cinema, with a nice bar. Good service, good location, comfy seats
J.
Beautiful theatre. Old timely decor combined with a massive screen made for a great experience. We were able to buy snacks and beers while we watched the movie. Highly recommended.
L.
Beautiful building especially as built same year my Dad was born! This building has being loveingly maintained. Seats so comfortable. My Grandson enjoyed the movie experience too! Please keep.
P.
As always, the embassy is one if my favorite cinemas around. Absolutely love it, the art deco theme of the grand is truly brilliant. And the whole place is tied together by the beautiful foyer. If you ever have time before a film, make your way down to the Black Sparrow Bar and get yourself a delicious cocktail from the excellent team.
M.
It's nice and big cinema hall. A bit expensive than the other places but it was nice. I like the leather seats nice and cosy. The sound system was good. Screen was good but wasn't very large though. You will still enjoy the movies there. My suggestion. Go to enjoy movies and just relax.
K.
Stunningly restored theatre! Coffee service really slow and their system of where to order/where to collect confused dome customers. Very very difficult to see Row numbers on carpet if you are s newcomer. Really helpful staff when I had left something behind in theater.
A.
Amazing vintage atmosphere. It may not the the biggest cinema, or the cheapest, but it does make up for it in charm. The building itself is beautiful and the décor throughout is well thought out. The bar and restaurant areas are lovely too.
T.
We come here not just for movies but especially for their cheese platter, calamari and the after dinner mint sundae! The staff are always friendly and attentive. Love it even if we struggle to find nearby parking often.
L.
Such friendly safe very approachable and helped us get into the movie we wanted
J.
This used to be a great cinema, with all the bells and the whistles. Unfortunately with the closing of Reading in town, there's been a massive influx of people visiting - such that the embassy cannot handle it. Queues and seating is a problem, and the quality is rapidly falling apart. The seats are getting worn in, and outside of the central sections (which you were almost guaranteed to find before, and still deserve the 5 star rating I gave but a year ago) the sound quality is very poorly configured.
Unfortunately this was never designed to be the primary cinema for the region, and its handling the increase in patrons very poorly.
-- Old Review - - - - -
Honestly one of the best cinemas around - if your show is airing there then chose it over the alternatives. It was $4 more expensive than Reading, however the comfort of the seats and quality of the sound certainly justified the extra spending. Also of note was that the platinum seats were the same price as standard, but we're very nicely placed - make sure to check when booking ;)
C.
A great venue, and both the upstairs and downstairs screens are good. When it's busy the queue for the tickets/candy can be long and slow, so if you're attending a blockbuster and need some popcorn, make sure you arrive on time.
R.
Great surround sound experience. It looks like a grand old cinema, they restored it to it's former glory; a bit retro outside and elegant inside. A nice place to watch a movie.
T.
Still such a grand old lady but a few maintenance issues. The signage for both the rows and seating had faded to the point of being unreadable. Comfortable seating and great leg room (my seats anyway)!! Love this theatre..
M.
Loud. Huge screen. Intense.
Update. Spending a bit more for premium seating in The Grand is absolutely so, so worth it. It takes the experience of watching films to the next level.
S.
I sat in the Platinum seats which was large and comfortable. Picture and sound quality were good definitely no extra bass or reverb. Decor is still good.
J.
Nice place. Staff not very helpful when you are wandering around wondering where to go. Very good picture and sound system. Be nice if they had in big writing that the $6 ice creams in a tub are dairy free organic rubbish
A.
Cinema is pretty decent. In the main cinema there are no cup holders so bear that in mind!
If you're right up the back in the main cinema, the screen does appear far away.
This would be one of the better cinemas in wellington.
K.
The Embassy Theatre is the home of the Lord of the Rings premieres in Wellington. For film buffs, visiting this theatre is a must. Built in the 20's, the architecture and style is beautiful. The actual movie theatre itself is great. As it was used for blockbuster, world premieres, the quality of the projection and sound is excellent (Dolby Atmos is awesome!). A majority of the seats are large and comfortable - pay a little extra to sit in the 'platinum' leather seats.
Downstairs you'll find two much smaller movie theatres and a little boutique bar called the Black Sparrow. Again the style of the bar is awesome and they serve a great cocktail. Nice spot to meet up with friends before your movie.
W.
An excellent cinema, such a large auditorium, with plenty of seating. Also, they offer high frame rate for the films that allow it. I also thoroughly enjoyed the bar under the cinema. There was a good choice of food prior to heading in to the cinema. I will be back!
T.
Great service, comfortable seating, beautiful decor and nice food available though a bit pricey, but that's to be expected in a cinema. They also sell a book for 5 tickets for $50 saving you 33% compared to individual tickets prices which are currently $15 each.
M.
Great facilities but why do we have to queue to get paper tickets when we have a scan code on our phone (from an internet booking). Seems very backward and caused much frowning from many other punters - some who had queued twice. Once to get snacks then a separate queue to get their paper tickets.
S.
This is in my opinion the best Cinema in Wellington. It dates back to the 1920's so the internal décor is really ornate, but the sound system is amazing. I haven't been in the smaller screens so can't comment on them but the big theatre is amazing. The large theatre is called the Grand, the smaller theatres are called deluxe. So make sure you book the Grand if possible. The queues can sometimes be quite long for tickets and food. Top Tip: You can also purchase tickets at the bar - with a smaller queue. The seat are really comfortable with loads of leg room too.
M.
Beautiful old theatre that has been tastefully done up to modern standards. Arguably the best cinema screen and sound system in the Wellington region. This is the place to go for any films with stunning visuals or great sound tracks.
S.
Important Takeaways:
1. Deluxe screens are small 50-60 seaters.. sitting anywhere closer than 5th row from front is not recommended
2. Buying an online ticket does not let you buy pass the queue. You are needed to get physical tickets from counter. The que can be long on weekendsop
3. Large popcorns are $10, large coke is $5.5, Cheaper if you book online
4. None of the seats recline.
Also platinum seats are priced same as regular seats, $15. Book early to get the best seats. $1.2 booking charge is worth getting the right seat in my opinion
5. The bar is amazing, you are allowed to take drinks to your screening.
6. Lastly, parking can be tough, arrive 15min early.
A.
Top rate boutique movie theater with leather seats in the main theatre that are lovely and wide with plenty of arm space, and a big screen with great sound. Nicely located at the bottom end of Courtenay Place where there are plenty of restaurants and watering holes for before and afters.
C.
Gasp!! I know!! It's not a 5!! But why you ask? I absolutely love this theatre, it's always awesome to watch movies here, the only downside is, if you don't get the premium seating, the regular seats can be extremely uncomfortable during longer movies. Everything else about this place is great.
P.
Really cool historic art deco building. Cinema seats are really comfortable and screens were good size. Bar there too for drinks before or after the movie. Usual selection of popcorn and snacks available at ticket station too. Saw blade runner and thor ragnarok here and enjoyed the experience both times.
D.
Brilliant decor and very friendly staff. It felt very homely and was very different to the rest of the Wellington street. Overall the feel, food and drinks of this theatre were great and I felt very at home there.
P.
Sizeable, luxurious cinemas. Decent ticket prices if you're a member of Event Cinemas loyalty programme. Downside is there's not enough screens, so less variety in films screening at any given time.
A.
The sound and picture was very impressive. Dialogue was a bit muddy though in parts . Also the air conditioning couldn't cope with a full house and a sunny day in Wellington. It was stifling up the back. Still a very cool cinema.
V.
Really loud speakers. Main cinema is huge and really nice but only worth going if you are sitting in or close to the Platnium area. Front row has an awkward viewing angle. The back seats after row like N or something are extremely unfortable for long sitting preiods.
Though they are the only Event Cinemas in Wellington, worth going just for the generous rewards scheme. I probably have a free movie waiting for me right now.
g.
Stunning looking; great to see theaters being maintained(in the non-multiplex format) in the old opera kind of regal setting; wonderful marble staircases and waiting areas...went to the grand cinema; nice seating(platinum).. wondered about the name tags on the seats; was probably set for a previous event...
E.
Beautiful cinema. Leather chairs and even a couch on the woman's toilet. But my seat wasn't that nice, my bump hurt during the movies haha. Friendly personnel. Music was very loud! The have some stereos over there. Maybe a bit too loud sometimes.
P.
Saw Captain Marvel here. Great theatre, majestic, classic and the sound system is nothing short of stunning. Highly recommended. Very comfy chairs too!
P.
An enticing gem of a place to go to. I love the old style charm of the theatre and the comfortable mustiness. I will visit this theatre again and again as long as I am in Wellington. A must visit if you are seeing a movie while visiting Wellington.
M.
This is our favorite theater in all of Wellington. It has an amazing atmosphere, and the garlic bread is delicious. Food can be served to you during the movie, which is a nice touch.
C.
Adorable cinema with a cute bar downstairs. The bar has a good range and very friendly staff. The cinema has more limited range than Reading, but still has most of the bigger films and the seats are more comfortable.
s.
Well visited on this Holiday Season n movie films showing interesting...
Been @ The Grand for the Wonder Woman 1984... really enjoyed all this night...
S.
It was interesting, we had a glitch before the film even started. But we were given complimentary tickets after the film. This theatre priorities customer service above self promotion, even the cinema cafe adopts this policy
D.
Good theatre with decent seating. Since the cinema has a bigger ascent than normal, the people in front don't block your vision as much
E.
Comfortable seats, great snacks and great location! Only downside is price: $15 for adults; $13 for students and seniors... Not too bad in the grand scheme of things but not cheap either.
S.
I dont come here for the food.
Having purchased the pizza here, I realised, it's not food first location.
Great for drinks and a movie and good to have choices but, how awesome would it be to be able to order fish and chips from the place across the road or get pizza from a pizza place? Uber eats partnerships with a handling fee?
H.
Amazing cinema. The screen is massive, the Dolby Atmos setup is epic, and the seats rock.
The staff have always been friendly and helpful. It's my favourite place to see blockbusters.
However, I avoid the Deluxe cinemas downstairs. The screens are uncomfortably high, the aisle runs down the centre (where the best seats would be), the air con is audible, and there are lights on the armrests that distract your periphery.
But the main auditorium rocks the party. Go Embassy!!!
T.
A true Wellington institution. The Embassy is an elegant cinema from an age where a night at the movies was a glamorous way to entertain. For the best experience, plan ahead and book a big comfortable seat in the Platinum seating section.
R.
HQ Wellington Film Festival. One big theatre and two small. Comfortable seats. Bars upstairs and downstairs. Good snacks and light meals. Plenty of restaurants too within walking distance. Street parking generally available within 10 minutes walk.
R.
Going to The Grand Theater at the Embassy is an experience in itself. Great sound, great screen, and a quality crowd as you'd expect in a city like Wellington. Arrive early, though, and be prepared to queue - it's a massive theater, and it takes time to seat that many people. 9.5/10 experience.
B.
If you want a full Dolby Atmos experience, this is the only place you can get it in Wellington. Luckily they also have comfy seats and great food/beverage options. Cup holders would be a nice addition.
B.
Main complaint is the lack of drink holders in the Grand theater, but the staff are always super nice, it's always comfortable and there are usually some pretty good deals on.
S.
The atmosphere is awesome, it is nothing like the cinema of Malaysia, it is a good experience.
The seat is comfortable, the staffs are very friendly.
Overall it is a wonderful experience.
M.
The smaller cinemas are fab, the larger one though has very old uncomfortable seating with basically no leg room. If you're a taller person or have long legs you'll be somewhat uncomfortable!
K.
The place to see big blockbusters in Wellington. Great cocktail bar on first floor.
B.
Sound was good, seats were comfy, didn't like the screen position. (the Grand) don't know if it was the movie but the lights didn't come back on till after the credits.
D.
One of our favourite places in the world. A beautiful old cinema with all the modern sound systems and massive screens you want for a blockbuster. Comfy seats.
It also passes my patented 'can I have a beer in the cinema test.'
N.
You can guarantee an exclusive and enjoyable evening
J.
Great movie theater. I think they've dropped their prices? $10 for a film is almost back to the prices of my childhood. Comfortable seats and a good range of snacks, hot food and drinks.
m.
Prices are high compared to Reading Cinema. Big screen theatre has uncomfortable seats and no cup holders. Smaller theaters are better.
A.
Beautiful old theatre cinema. Has been restored beautifully. Cinema is upstairs with normal candybar selections, although there is also a bar with pizza, wine, beer, coffee, etc available.
D.
Perhaps the last movie theatre in Wellington, since others have been closed because of earthquake damage. Decor is very nice, vintage style. Smaller than others, but better in my opinion.
S.
This place is a nice mix between old school and modern. Downstairs vintage-y style bar which we didnt try but looked cool. Movie of the week Thor Ragnarok was $9 otherwise it would have have been $12
B.
Great place, great atmosphere, good food. Unfortunately I was not in the gold lounge and since I'm tall; toward the end of the movie, I got a bit restless as I was cramping up.
C.
Great movie - great venue!
C.
Great movie experience. Amazing sound. Also allows alcohol to be taken in if purchased from the bar. Nothing like sitting back with a beer / wine watching the big screen.
f.
I've only been to the cinema 2 (the small theater by the bar) so I can't really talk about the main theater. But service is good and the theater was comfy, decent screen (but they didn't respect the ratio of the film) and enough leg room.
T.
I Was Dissapointed they were doing renovations, and did not make alternative arrangements for providing food to customers, sadly I could not have a wine watching my film 😣 cinema 3 was adequate but I noticed sitting front row to the smaller Deluxe screen I could see the dots making up the picture.. not sure of the resolution, but 4k TV has spoiled me 😂😂
B.
Great cinema, wonderful seats and very cool new bar downstairs. But the bar staff on the night I visited were just awful - unprofessional, attitudinous hipsters who seemed to see the people littering their bar (customers) as an interruption to their private conversations. My friends and I had to wave our arms like we were guiding an aircraft into landing to get any attention and then it was sour and clearly begrudged. And the bar top was piled high with filthy dishes and glasses, while the staff stood around and talked to each other. It's not exactly rocket surgery to run a bar effectively and a shame that in such a great place the staff think they are too important to do their jobs properly.
F.
Only theater left in Wellington CBD area. The hall is kind of too warm, just beside the screen 2 flashing red light on the ceiling is extremely distracting. (The Grand)
S.
A classy theater in the CBD. Be aware, concessions here take the form of a full service bar, which is nice, however popcorn is pre-made and therefore a bit stale.
A.
This is such a lovely cinema, provided you don't sit too far back where the seats are a bit uncomfortable.
S.
Easily the best cinema I have been to in NZ. The art deco design is beautiful, the seats are great and the screen and sound are awesome. Caters for all tastes with a bar, cafe and standard cinema fare.
P.
An iconic experience for visitors to Wellington (home of The Lord of the Rings - which premiered at The Embassy). The sound system is amazing - but best bring your own cushions. Unless you're in the posh seats, that is. ;)
T.
Beautiful cinema with an old school feel. Theater is of good size and great sound quality. One thing it could improve on is adding cup holders :)
A.
Lovely, luxurious feeling cinema that isn't badly priced at all....friendly staff, comfy seats with lots of space and a great little bar. Generally excellent selection of films.
T.
Nice cinema, loved the bar with very reasonable prices so you can enjoy a good whisky while watching a movie. Also really nice architecture and friendly staff.
D.
Lovely architecture, very nice amenities and good quality movies. Can't ask for more
A.
The main auditorium is a grand venue for movies which oozes with character architecture. Thje smaller theatres by contrast are modern and quite cozy. Turn up early and relax with a fine wine..
C.
A great old theatre (cinema), getting a little rough around the edges. The trip is almost worth it just for the restroom tiles alone.
J.
Love being in the big theatre, but even the small theatres are a step up from Reading down the road. If you’re in the big theatre, avoid the back rows - the seats are cushioned with rocks & steel.
M.
Watched Couple of Movies . Specially Kabir Singh (Bollywood). Probably best theatre near CBD and has good service. I always choose small AUDI as the THE GRAND one was not good experience until and unless you need a crowd to cheers . Audi 2 - 1 were amazing. you might get deals for 15 NZD if you are member and book online.
B.
Loved it. Old school theatre. Can have a drink. Relax and watch a movie. We saw LAST CHRISTMAS. Don't forget to keep looking up.
R.
The theatre is beautiful and the Cafe bar food very nice. The staff add to the experience. Further to this is the architecture and interior decoration make for a wonderful visit.
U.
One of the best/coolest theaters I've ever been to would recommend going there either by yourself with a friend or family or even a date they have a nice bar so that's a plus.
N.
Awesome place to watch a movie. Trying to buy anything from the bar beforehand is a nightmare.
D.
Loved the lower theatres, the bathrooms are art deco and a lovely change from the normal look of bathrooms in public. Upper theatre quite loud though so not for me
T.
Theatre is old but I loved the feeling. Lots of seating & screen was huge! Worth the visit to watch a movie.
R.
Awesome experience watching movies here. Comfortable seating and massive screen. Only complaint is that there are no cup holders
S.
Watched the Avengers Endgame here and so glad we did! Had big comfy leather seats and yummy popcorn in a cosy 60 odd seat theatre 👌🏻
A.
Went a couple of times, was well priced, second time the service was really slow because there was only one person behind the bar and the customer in front asked a hundred and fifty questions.. the staff are helpful though and the building is really really interesting, would recommend it for the building alone... It was all clean and comfortable and the toilets are amazing!!
J.
Good ambience to watch your awaited movies😁
Affordable popcorn too😍
A.
A beautifully restored piece of history. Not quite the comfort level we've come to expect from modern multiplexes but yhe experience of setting a film in this historic cinema is well worth it
N.
Great venue.... Great atmosphere... Great staff.... Good sounds and screen.... Good available.... There is a bar..... This is a great experience for any movie
R.
Best theatre in Wellington (not because of the fact that the other ones closed down) with friendly staff. Would recommend watching movies at the Grand over Deluxe.
R.
Favourite theatre in Wellington. Big screen. Great old school architecture. Only thing missing is cup holders. Great staff.
J.
Staff at the delux bar were very friendly. Been in all the seat options available and find them very uncomfortable. Ok for a short movie but you will be in pain after a 3 hour movie.
R.
The grand old lady of film in Wellington. The main screen is a great way to see a movie, the food options are good. The two smaller screens are a bit underwhelming and poorly soundproofed against the main area, though.
M.
A tad expensive but the cinema is always clean and the staff are friendly. Been watching films at this place since the 80s. A Wellington icon.
N.
Beautiful old cinema. You pay a bit more, but you get your money's worth tenfold. Great staff and service and absolutely amazing space to get into a film
P.
Great décor, theatre pretty empty so we had the best seats, café-style food as well as the usual popcorn and soft drinks
C.
Really good service, signed up to their club for discounted tickets and free popcorn because it was international popcorn day! Only improvement would be not having to share arm rest with the person next to you
G.
Great movie theatre!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. When I went there, it was nearly full for the Wellington Film Society.
C.
Excellent service, Great movies and delicious food. I couldn't want more from a movie theater! One of the best locations to see a movie (especially anything grandiose)
J.
The smaller cinemas are nice and comfy but the seats in the large cinema are so uncomfortable to sit on I haven't returned to watch another movie there.
P.
Fantastic cinema, the staff are helpful and will take you to your seat. The volume in the main theatre is a bit loud for some people.
D.
Friendly, helpful staff, decent prices and in the De Luxe theatre, the most leg-room I've had in a non-premium theatre. Will definitely be going there again.
H.
Beautiful environment and they have a lift for wheelchair access.
M.
Best place on Wellington to experience a big screen motion picture event. Largest screen, incredible sound system, great staff and plenty of food options.
E.
Fantastic theatre but they need more bathrooms. There is always a queue. Also getting snacks from the bar can be crazy.
A.
Really good theatre experience good seating And good sound. Screen is a decent size as well.
O.
Bit of a shame the queue outside was a bit of a shambles.
R.
Movies, cocktails, ice cream, or just a place to hangout
E.
despite the fact that there are several cinemas in Wellington, for me, there are two options to see a movie in town: The Roxy Cinema and Embassy Theatre. Last time I saw “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. The sound was good, the seat confortable ...
S.
Went to Shadow in the Cloud in the Grand theatre, excellent big screen and great sound.
R.
The cinema shows movies that others don't and in Atmos surround sound for most movies. Big screen, Big sound in a big Theater. World famous.
T.
Best cinema experience in Wellington, especially in the main theatre. Beautiful interior and great food/drink options - much more than just pop corn and candy.
N.
Seats could be more comfortable. Shows should run as per the demand. I mean very nice movies have less number of days/shows.
G.
Excellent ambience in a refurbished theatre, with modern technology
G.
Amazing atmosphere and great for NZ red carpet events. Love how they themed the cinema halls for the Lord of the Rings movies, should do it for other movies NZ is involved with.
S.
We had a drink in the very comfortable and smart bar, prior to seeing a movie in one of the smaller deluxe cinemas in the complex. All in all a very upmarket cinema experience.
T.
Best cinema i have ever seen so far, classy in artdeco 20s style!
nicely refurbished for the Lord of the rings premiere.
impressive dolby atmos and great screen.
s.
4 stars for Deluxe Theatres downstairs , the plush seating, large screens and service. I generally avoid the Grand if I can.
A.
I really like the Embassy. Its big screen is huge, while its smaller screens are similar to boutique cinemas but at lower prices. Its proximity to New World could also be seen as convenient...
E.
Wonderful screen and sound. Didn't get into good seats, so was uncomfortable all the way throughout the movie.
S.
Great cinema only problem is the 30 MINS of ads before the movie that was super unnecessary!! It’s usually 15 minutes everywhere else, but it was supposed to start at 1:30 and ended up starting at 2!
M.
Such an amazing experience and the movie, Gully Boy is super too! Great message conveyed and I won't hesitate to recommend this place at all.... Loved it!!!!!
A.
Probably the nicest cinema in Wellington. If you get good seats it is unbeatable with dolby atmosphere surround sound. The grand is the cinema to aim for!
D.
Great theatre but it's starting to age again. Seats have little support left and the picture was not great considering the ticket price.
D.
Usually enjoy but the sound quality for Bho Rap was very poor. Went and saw the same movie at Readings Titan and it was so much better.
J.
Love this historic and beautiful theater. Go see the plaques and memories from the director of the Lord of The Rings and watch a normal film in that stunning building.
M.
A nice place to watch movies. This theater is well built and looks lavish.
N.
Amazing venue. Great atmosphere and the staff are really helpful and welcoming. The move selection are excellent. My favourite cinema is Wellington.
B.
One of the best cinemas in Wellington. Must see theatre, very old & redecorated beautifully for LOTR3 world premiere.
L.
There really is no other way to see a movie now, great seats, no kids running around. A little harsh with the length of the lines for tickets and munchies but over all fabulous
N.
The Embassy was a focal centrepoint for the release of the LOTR and Hobbit triologies. The interior is gorgeous and regal. The Black Sparrow has a dramatic entrance and is a warm comfortable and intimate space to pass time waiting for a movie.
S.
Great cinema! The leather seats are really comfortable and the food is pretty good as well.
K.
The Embassy is my favourite cinema in all of NZ, it has great sound, great seating and a great picture all with a vintage vibe.
Any Tim I am in Wellington I go and see whatever movie is showing on the grand screen.
J.
A beautiful cinema near the edge of the city where you can enjoy drinks and watch the latest movies. It's worth a visit to enjoy the old fully renovated building.
S.
The main theatre is phenomenal. Grand, spacious with comfortable seating and all seats have great viewing angles.
A.
Great theatre, great service, the main theatre is fantastic while the two smaller ones are quite small but once you sit down in the large seats you won't even notice!!
R.
Movie was nice. Place was wide enough to carry huge amount of people. Just need improvement on sounds.
J.
One of if not the best cinema in Wellington picture quality is excellent along with the sound only negative is no free parking on weekends on Kent and Cambridge Terrace any more I'm sure it makes it loose out on business which is very much a shame 10 out of 10
B.
Love going here for the deluxe cinema. No bug's flying around unlike reading cinema down the road. Food is great and good service
t.
Always great to see a film at
R.
This is the movies for grown-ups, great atmosphere. Get there early and enjoy a cocktail or coffee.
B.
Old school movie theatre with beautiful decor. Seats are comfortable and the bar and the coffee shop in it are both great in their own way.
F.
Always good, fantastic sound, I always get the platinum seats. Few bucks extra but extremely comfortable and perfectly in front of the screen
P.
Awesome theatre. Real comfortable chairs. Very relaxing watching a movie thier
M.
I love the Embassy Theatre for its elegance, calm, unhurried atmosphere and it's obliging and friendly staff. The decor is wonderful and then of course there are movies!
K.
Great atmosphere, clean tidy and great value for money
D.
What a interesting theater its a true mix of the past and present. Big seats big screen but no cup holders. ..
G.
Cleand and tidy, friendly staff. Good sound and comfy chairs. We'll be back
T.
A great theatre. Glad to see so many people there on a Sunday night. Go to the movies guys! It's better!
A.
Beautiful cinema. Leather chairs and even a couch on the woman's toilet. But my seat wasn't that nice, my bump hurt during the movies haha. Friendly personnel
C.
Good theatre with good enough screen size and nice sound quality. In my experience, there was no air conditioning in the hall, which was a down point.
K.
Refreshment bars could use a little bit of an upgrade in style and layout as It's difficult to work out what they have on offer, but otherwise still a great theatre
C.
Great cinema, biggest cinema has slight capacity/screen size problem. Would recommend sitting near the front
n.
This Grand theater is great. The screen is gigantic. Seats are comfortable and I love the overall vibes of it.
S.
Best theatre in town now that the cheaper readings has closed. Relatively inexpensive place to watch a movie in a lovely old building.
G.
Beautiful theatre. Lovely staff. Great time seeing Harley Quinn. Fab night
K.
Great day out by koby1ben0b
S.
Love this old school cinema. The place itself is quite an experience. Such a nice change from the usual big brand cinemas
W.
Awesome sound, bit loud, but awesome.
Good setup for a small theatre. Comfy seats.
D.
Multiplex in a historic building, good sound quality. Food and beverage on site. Seats in small theatres are comfy.
M.
Great vibe. Overall awesome venue for movies and a coffee.
J.
The best cinema experience. Beautiful old cinema equipped with the latest Dolby atmosphere sound and huge screen.
G.
One of the best cinemas in Southern Hemisphere.Beautiful building.Biggest screen ,main theatre. Two cosy ones.Drinks craft beer, food etc
C.
Beautiful cinema. Great location near restaurants and bars. Friendly staff.
C.
Classic and tidy. Had an awesome experience however seats could have had a drink holder and a possible car park at least for a few would be much appreciated.
B.
The upstairs cinema and cafe and the downstairs bar are incredible! The two smaller screens have great seats but feel like an afterthought
P.
Perfect experience, good facilities, lovely food and friendly staff
D.
Easily the best theatre in Wellington. It's got a great aesthetic, good food and drink selection and solid cinema screens.
R.
Very friendly staff and great theater 👍
J.
If you want a big screen and a beautiful cinema in Wellington, the embassy is the best! The smaller cinemas and cocktail bar are also very nice.
C.
The prices are a bit high but the cinematic feel this place gives is awesome. The place is huge and no seat is a bad seat
J.
Amazing cinema. Like going back to the 50's but with a modern screen and sound system. Wellington has two amazing cinemas and this is one of the them
K.
The grandest of Wellington’s movie theatres. It has a range of movies for everyone.
J.
Went along to a movie fundraiser, was great to get a drink from the bar and take it into the movie. Fairly comfortable seats too
A.
Great service, atmosphere and movie Kids liked the popcorn and commented that the sound in the main theatre was very good
k.
Just a very average cinema. Used to be quite fancy but is now the only cinema in town so has a casual feel.
A.
Seats are super uncomfortable and no leg room whatsoever for someone who is what id call average height 178cm its ridiculous.
unfortunately this is the only movie theater near me.
T.
I had yummy nachos and cider at Blondini's cafe and had a wonderful time watching Konosuba. Always a pleasure to visit the Embassy.
J.
Stunning theatre - so lucky to have this as the sole remaining large cinema in the city.
P.S. check out the bathrooms. So dope 😁
T.
Make sure you visit this beautiful cinema and Wellington land mark. Great snacks, a good mix of mainstream and not so well known movies, it even has a bar!
s.
Awesome traditional movie theatre with great sound system. Nice set up with bar upstairs and downstairs
G.
Really beautiful building, the deluxe cinemas have very comfortable seats and make for a cool viewing experience.
R.
My favourite Wellington cinema. A great experience from most seats, although the sound is optimal in the deluxe seating.
A.
My preferred choice to watch big screen largest screen in town, big seats, plenty of leg room, romantic 1950's feel, bar and cafe inside
O.
The cinema for Wellington city, been visiting for years now. Great quality screens, high quality seats and great atmosphere.
A.
The screen and the building are amazing. However, the seats are not very comfortable.
M.
Lovely, relaxing bar. Seats in the cinema however were cramped and uncomfortable, we sat in row R.
C.
Great experience. Staff were very helpful and was very helpful with getting a combo! Love the atmospheric too
H.
Well worth a visit. Make sure you're in the grand cinema room as it is the most impressive.
j.
Pretty darn good. Nice staff and classic building. Go to a film to see what a theatre should be like.
C.
Beautiful theatre but the seats were super uncomfortable, recommend taking a cushion with you
D.
Great cinema experience at the biggest screen in the city
L.
Great cinema, with comfy seats and good sound. Lovely interior, lots of space.
J.
The seats towards the side were cramped. Also the sound was not up to the mark. Upper Hutt Monterey had better sound quality...
J.
Really comfy chairs, bar area is quiet, unusual tasty cocktails, a nice surprise
B.
Great cinema experience. Black Sparrow is perfect for a pre-movie drink.
J.
Good place to see a movie. The little theatres downstairs by the bar are very intimate and nice.
R.
Nice place after all the cinemas closed off in the city
M.
Tons of seats, Dolby atmos sound system and a bar. Easily the best large scale cinema in town.
S.
Love it, can't stop imagining a huge ballet presentation going on every time i step inside. Beautiful structure and nice staff.
T.
Truly a terrific movie theatre. The big cinema is gorgeous and the smaller theatres are perfect in every way.
B.
The architecture of this cinema is one of the best I ever had the pleasure to watch a movie in. The quality of the sound is not top-notch though.
A.
Wait times are massive for sold out sessions, give yourself plenty of time. Pro local tip: you can pick up tickets at the bar downstairs, along with popcorn etc.
A.
Good ambience. The seats in the Grand are small and you can't slip in. The parking access is difficult and if it's raining strong then it kind of a problem
N.
First time in NZ theatre...
