Cute and comfortable seating. Clean, well presented premises and friendly staff. Fried chicken was poor, chips and sauces were good, all fair price, and you can take drinks and snack menu items into theatre. Rest of the menu and cabinet looked good. Brilliant sound calibration quality for a small theatre. The visuals (Spiderman, no way home) blurred a lot in many fast scenes, but I believe this is common with new standard AV on older standard projectors. Go treat yourself!

Lovely building I lived near here way back when this was a Hammer Hardware store, now stylishly redecorated cinema/cafe. Nice coffee and reasonable range of cabinet food (also menu meals available); service was prompt and polite, clear in terms of Covid19 sign-in and seating arrangements; pleased there's secure cycle racks outside, nice place to sit, relax and watch the world go by.

It really great and awesome to have a cinema so close to home in the heart of Island bay. Not only Is it a great Cinema it’s a a really nice local cafe with a liquor license with a good selection of different beers and wines and also had not bad little selection of some good whiskey. More importantly they have a lot vegetarian, vegan and GF options. The staff are super friendly and give very good customer service. I highly recommend them. It’s also great to support our local community business. As we know local government don’t as they are hurting our local business with this cycle way.

I love this place. The food & snacks are so reasonably priced for a theater and it’s a really fun atmosphere to get dinner & see a movie. The food is really good (though I’d love to see more vegan options) and the popcorn/drink combo is reasonable (plus the popcorn comes in a cute little box & the soda comes in a glass!). Tuesday night movies for $10 is such a good deal. And the people who work here are really friendly. Definitely recommend for a night out.

Fantastic service, more on offer than just popcorn and ice cream. Cosy little theatres, comfortable couches. Super friendly staff. Just all around a very cool little cinema.

Food there was great! Seats had some leftover jaffas/popcorn between them though, could be more clean

The last 2 times I have been it's been so cold while watching the movie - we have told them as I presume it's the air conditioning but they won't fix it.

Being in Wellingtonian means you’re spoiled for choice of top quality cinemas and the Empire is in the top three with the Roxy and the Embassy I reckon. The Empire won’t blow you away with the most amazing sound, picture or luxury seating but with three cozy cinemas and a delicious eatery, it’s a perfect way to enjoy a film on a quiet weekend

Excellent - Staff friendly and I rate the cafe:)

The side of chips were hand made and cooked to perfection. The pumpkin ravioli sauce was ruined with lard fat being in the sage butter. Technical error here and needs to be addressed. Lamb pasta tender but a little too much pepper for my taste. This may have mellowed if the meat sauce had been cooked for longer. Menu has potential but technically let down at the last minute. I would recommend this place. The pizza’s looked great. Value for money. We will visit again and maybe can lift this rating. A little disorganised at the front counter.

1. Perfect atmosphere. It creates a sense of nostalgia towards how film watching used to be before the introduction of cinema today. It shows this with its sweet looking interior and exterior. 2. Wonderful customer service. 3. The cinema's are small. This may be beneficial while watching a horror film due to the tight space, but it may be a bit too for others. 4. You may be waiting for a while to use the toilets due to their small size.

Pulled pork sandwich was good along with the coffee

Food was nice, but a wedge of lemon would have been nice on my fish&chips. Fish was cooked in lovely batter. The service when I ordered was very poor, please look at the customer and smile

Nice local cinema. My family goes here often. My grandson and I enjoy a an ice cream, from the counter, before the movie starts.

Visited this place for the first time. I tried the Garlic Prawn Fetuccini and I liked it a lot. I also tried the Tiramisu and it was delicious 😋 Staff were friendly and had good customer service. I would like to visit this place again. It is not too expensive.

Definitely worth a visit. Great cinema very comfy seating. Easy disabled access and toilet facilities. Very nice helpful staff and very good cafe on site.

I've had snacks before a movie a few times before, so this is likely a one-off issue. My partner and I both had cheese scones and coffee. The scones had great look and texture, but zero flavour. It was like they were baked with no salt. I hope this was an accident instead of the recipe.

Not a lot of cabinet food to choose from but we were a little late for lunch. Good prices. Staff are friendly. Hot food took a while because they only have one appliance for reheating. I will have to go again 😊

Busy Island Bay cafe. Popular with the locals. Excellent Havana coffee and good range of cabinet food. And of course, it has the best local cinema!

This is our favourite Cinema in Wellington, great food, clean cinemas and comfy seats. Today though it felt a little unwelcoming. Staff struggled to smile and rolled eyes at some customers. Yes there were lots of children and families but the usual friendly vibe was missing. Won't stop us going but felt it enough to share.

Used to be a regular here for coffee but, the staff changed over and the quality's gone downhill. All still friendly but, I'd definitely just pop over the road to Betsy. The foods much better at Betsy as well. Good place to get something before the movie, love the refurbishment of the old cinema.

Good cafe with a short but interesting menu, excellent coffee, and fluffies or ice cream for the kids. Our two year old grandson loves it

Great venue and the cafe atmosphere was top notch. Would have been 5 stars but the aircon made the theatre freezing. Big shame because our whole group and people around us all felt the chill and couldn't wait to get out at the end of the film.

Family friendly with a large seating area. I suspect a lot of people go there for family gatherings and coordination of family life with friends not including a movie. They have three cinemas and all the latest movies on offer. A very social and happy place to be in.

3 screens, not huge but good sound and big enough for size of theatres. Easy on street parking and if you feel like it short walk to beach.

Great food and drink. I love the ice cream. Only 3 screens, with one of those upstairs. Not good if you're unable to climb stairs. Actual theatre's only sit about 50 people. Nice and cosy.

Excellent place to eat and see a movie. Comfortable, stylish even. Nice ice cream, even if the queue is a little chaotic. Plenty of free parking on the street.

Staff and facilities are great, eatery is open and well lit. Food was a nice selection cakes, biscuits, chocolate eclairs, profiteroles. Coffee, fluffies . . cold drink cabernet, looked like in- house ice cream . Toilet in foyer was clean and a pleasant surprise. Can't wait for a date night there, well leave the kids with a babysitter and not hurry home

THERE’S POPCORN! Lovely staff who are eager to help and a fantastic cafe with a wide variety of gelato and ice cream flavours. The seats are wide, sofa like and the arms have plenty of room to pop a plate of their food down, pop your handbag or your drink.

What a great destination! The food was magnificent, the shakes are delicious! Utterly fantastic little theatres. Gives you a much more intimate evening cuddled up on the couch with your better half.

Such a welcoming accommodating happy place. Fabulous friendly service with amazing food great coffee and lovely happy staff. Nothing's too much trouble and they're very kind, thoughtful and considerate. Have been here a couple of times and it's a fav now. Have yet to see a movie but it's on my list to do. Wonderful place, well worth a visit. Great for kids

The empire... I have been going there for about 6 years now even before it became the empire! It still was a cinema but not as good as it is now but it's still awesome! The food is so good like the fridge food the popcorn and the ice creams and drinks and everything else is awesome and there are heaps of parking spots to park In to go to this awesome cinema! There's lots more that I could say but there's so much good things about it that it would take me ages to write it all down! But I definitely recommend coming here!!!

Double sized chairs are nice to snuggle up in with your date. Room was kinda cold though.

Not only a charming boutique cinema, but a lovely cafe as well. Food combinations produce delightful looking and tasteful brunch meals. The food cabinet is filled with a selection of small batch biscuits, slices and cake, alongside a reasonable selection of savoury treats. The cinemas are small and comfortable, with two seater couches.

Service initinitially quick. Did not come back to check in. Only one waiter poor guy was busy. Squid was ok. But fish was dry. Small serving of fish. Vegetables were cooked just right still had the lovely crunch.

Great spot if you are used to the cinemas closer to central Wellington, easy to get to on public transport and nice comfortable seating in the theatre. Would recommend!

Wonderful small-sized cinemas. They have pleasant staff. The cinemas themselves are cosy and warm and have couches to on that adds to the home-y feel. Snacks and drinks are pretty expensive compared to other cinemas.

Menu changed since I was last here. I ordered scrambled egg on toast. While appearance wasn't over attractive. The simple dish was done so well. Delicious and would definitely order again. I also like that we could choose seating for our movie tickets, in a Small intimate cinema and recent release film. Will definitely return

Great movie, but I was disapponted there were no printed copies of the Italian Film Festival programme left. I like to read about the movies in hard copy. Otherwise fabulous!

Just lv the atmosphere here.,tired lounge seating Active restaurant facilities,can be a lovely night out with friends and family, Great homemade quality ice cream. Delicious. Great coffee or tipple of choice whilst watching a shared movie.

Great local cinema, café and restaurant all together under the same roof. Good parking, bicycle stand, takeaway coffee from the wall for those unable to enjoy the atmosphere this place offers. Help yourself loyalty cards mean that you don't have to go fishing around in your wallet

It's so nice to find a cinema with couches instead of seats, where there is good barista style coffee and you can have a glass of wine. It's a much nicer cinema experience than normal, and the cafe is good enough that we have been here simply for the coffee without even wanting to see a film!

The parking. Said it, this is the best cinema in Wellington for Parking. I've probably jinxed it now but I come here when I know it's a short time between getting there and the movie starting. Busy family lifestyles will sometimes have you cramming in things with short spaces in between. This is one of those cinemas where I've been able to get the family consensus and booked online and have agreement on timing when everyone can be in the sameplace. Been here for Star Wars Opening and many other early releases. Also, love going in with a Gin and Tonic.

In need of air con! Went to a 7pm viewing and everyone was sweating. Couldn't wait for the film to end. Nice place just too hot. And the pop corn is served in paper bags so get used to the rustling bag sound.

Fabulously opulent yet welcoming with super friendly staff. Menu is unique and the food devine. My one critique would be the luxurious movie theatre only has one $10 day so I tend to see movies at Reading.

Another fantastic indie covenant in Welly. Good, comfortable seats. We saw 'Finding Dory' and the screen and sound were good. Might be a bit small if you are looking for a blockbuster experience but I have only seen one screen. Also anywhere that you can drink wine and watch movies must be 5 *.

Nice little theatre, although it needs some work. Furnishings are a bit dated and the sound quality was poor, to the point where it kinda spoiled the movie

As an American I wish theater cafes were more common and not monopolized by large scale theaters like cinermark. Being able to see both large-scale and independent films at a cafe theater is a gift that island bay is lucky to have. And it helps that the people are wonderfully excited about their jobs there

Light & airy cafe with great food & lovely counter staff. If you’re standing outside a theatre door thinking, my movie should have started now, it probably has! The staff don’t open & shut doors as movies start & finish.

Great cinema, the seats are couches for two. Screens are still old tech, but great for a retro experience and very enjoyable. Ice cream is recommended and reasonably priced.

Foods good it came quick and the coffee is nice. On the eggs benidict comberbatch the hollindase sauce is way to sweet that's why no 5 stars.

I have been to see two films here. The 1st time I was the only person in the theatre, once the film had started, it was about 5minutes before the come to close the theatre door. Letting in a bit light onto the screen. The 2nd time same thing happened, but a movie goer went & close the door. Not a big thing but they need to get on top of it. But enjoyed the movie.

Two words: feijoa sorbet. This cinema and eatery ticks a lot of boxes: comfortable cinemas, clean loos, neighbourhood loyalty scheme. The coffee is often too acidic for soya milk drinkers but who needs coffee when there is (vegan) Feijoa Sorbet (other flavours also available). It is rare indeed for vegans to be able to enjoy a dessert.

My favourite place to get great coffee. Short blacks - great! Decaf - great! Feels like a treat, but also everyone is casual and relaxed too.

Cute little neighborhood cinema. Since the reopening in 2015 , the food is really good with yummy desserts. The quality on the projectors in not the best tho, the image can be quite stuttery

We visited for the Italian film festival and loved it.

The Popcorn could improve. Also would be nice to have a support to bring the food to the Cinema. Hot plates are dangerous to carry.

Great Cafe. Couch seats are decent. Sometimes the screens have a few black marks on them that take you out of the movie in the lighter scenes.

A great wee cinema. Three screens (none of them large, but the seating perfectly positioned so it doesn't seem so), with double sofas, a great selection of icecreams and drinks, and one of the best cafes for dinner before your movie.

Yes it was very good but I thought the seats in the picture theater are getting a little run down but needs a small lift for people who have disabilities

Very stylish cinema that also includes a cafe that serves good food. If you don't mind a strong smell of popcorn, then this is a good cinema to go to (and, at the time, was one of the only cinemas showing the movie I wanted to watch)--

Empire Theatre Island Bay is a vibrant place to be today: great movies and relaxed cafe for my stopover during walk to Island Bay beach.Looking south over the ocean, watching seagulls, Saturday runners and boaties is so restful.

Nice place to watch a movie except for 1 thing :-( the Heat in the Theatre was way too high there was no Air Conditioning and it felt like you were sitting in a Sauna ... couldn't enjoy the movie at all
