Reviews of Tunnel Gully Recreation Area
J.
Easy walk with good accessibility under an hour, unless you are taking photos. Huge native trees and nikau palms, a waterfall, and access to the tunnel. We saw Kererū, Fantail/pīwakawaka, and tūī. There are well laid out picnic area with good toilet facilities.

Fantastic views and trails to walk with the dogs, kids and even on a mountain bike.

Beautiful scenery great facilities, we loved walking through the forest hearing the rushing water and enjoying Aotearoa at it's best.

A beautiful place to walk, quiet and amazing

Very beautiful area. It's been kept pretty well. Plenty of awesome spots for picnicking. We did the Tanes track with a stroller. The track is very well looked after and you can get most of the way around with a stroller with little trouble, though you will definitely need two people in some points. At the start of the tracks you'll have to squeeze under or lift over the bars, and mid way through the track up in the ravine you'll hit a couple of places with large roots which will require two people to lift the stroller over. There was also one point where there was a bit of a slip and it has been temporarily fixed up, but it is too narrow for a stroller and the stroller will need to be lifted over. Other than that smooth sailing.

Lovely picnic and walking tracks. Vehicle gate was still closed on Saturday at 9am so had to park at end of plateau Road.

Tunnel Gully Recreation Area is located north of Upper Hutt and includes beautiful native forest walks through virgin New Zealand forest. You can also walk through an old train tunnel. The area has new, clean toilet blocks, plenty of parking and picnic/exercise areas. There is also a mountain biking track. Tane's Track is a walking track that takes you on a loop up to a waterfall. All the tracks are well maintained and designed. Ideal for families of all ages. We got to see some amazing flowering Rata trees, the best I examples I have ever seen. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area and even locals who haven't been for a while.

The large flat picnic area among tall gum trees at the top of Plateau Rd is a relaxing tranquil restful spot, close to Taines Track and the Tunnel, and it's on the Remutaka bike trail. We enjoyed our picnic lunch very much in the shade of a gum tree.

Relaxing environment, enjoying nature at its best

Never been there before so was an enjoyable experience. Pity that some scumbags had been there recently breaking into cars.
