Reviews of Te Whara Track
M.
Start from Ocean Beach. Get ready for steep climb up. Gets even steeper in some places. Enjoy the views on the way. Before half way up and up to the Summit there are about 250 Steps too. Closer to Summit may get bit wet and muddy as you will be in the clouds if weather is cloudy. Recommend walking stick. Walking down back is faster but take care of your knees. If you are doing full track on the other side then plan accordingly. Best track and views. Medium to hard grade.

We didn't have enough time to complete whole track (Ocean Beach to Urquharts Bay 7.5km one way), so we decided to start from Ocean Beach and stopped at the Te Whara (lookout). The track is a bit challenge but the view is amazing along the track. Wish I'd have enough time to complete whole track.

We did this on Boxing Day and couldn’t think of any other way to burn the calories we had consumed on Xmas day.
We started from Urquharts Bay car park (we were there just after 9 am so no probs getting a parking space at the start of the trail). We first went up to see the WW battery just to look at the views from the top and continued across the paddock to the start of the track.
There’s 1200 steps and some amazing views along the way and we only came across a handful of people until just after Peach Cove where we saw quite a few people who had just started the hike from Ocean Beach end.
We reached Ocean Beach by 1 pm. Wish we had cash with us so we could have gotten an ice block from the surf shop. We walked back on the main road back to Urquharts Bay which took us only 45 minutes. Lots and lots of cars and people when we got to our car

The te whara track offers a great incline challenge and lots of views to catch from ocean beach but once in the forest you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and also not many flies are around which are always a plus.
K.
Very damp and lots of roots. I would say not suitable for children. There are lots of steps. Its definitely a challenge and would recommend for people that have some kind of athletic ability.
C.
Very ominous on a cloudy day. Try go when the sky's clear. Few cool rocks to climb up and the top.
T.
Quite steep in places and can get muddy but the views are spectacular.
M.
Beautiful spot at the end of the road, Whangarei Heads. Ocean Beach is absolutely stunning. Not wheelchair friendly, but not many beaches are. Be prepared for a 5 minute walk through soft sand, but well worth the sight.

Great track to hike, steep at the beginning however the view was well worth it. We were a group of 8 and took approx 5hr 30min including time for photos/rest etc.
I wouldn't say our pace would be considered fast so for those not as fit possible account for a 6hr duration.
We started at the Urquharts car park as we wanted to get to the summit for the sunset, would recommend starting at the Urquharts car park as the way down to Ocean Beach carpark was a very easy walk to end the track. If you start the Ocean Beach carpark, prepare to have a slightly more challenging end to Urquharts carpark.

Albeit this is my first hike in NZ but it was great. Tiring, yes. But still fun. A lot of up and down but it’s a good workout and the views and scenes of the coastal forest are worth it.
C.
Fantastic views worth the hill climb, perhaps not for the unfit.
M.
Extrem hard to hike - Extrem beautyful. I have done a one day round trip. My experience: beautyful sceneries on this 8 km Track.
Never Ending stairs, many steep passages.
If you want do it one way which i recommend, you need a Shuttle in the other side.
If you want return the same day- oh man; be well trained and dont forget water.
After this 16km Track i was almost Dead and i was trained. But; one of my best hikes ever.

Man talk about a tough climb uphill for the first couple of hours with never ending steps that just seem to go on and on. Once you get past the old radar station there is very little to see as the Bush surrounding you is so thick that all you can see is the track ahead. At least the walk downhill was easy
L.
Such a great track for hiking ;)
Departure point : ocean beach.
Arrival point : Smugglers bay.
Between : 7,5km, 650m D+, stairs, 2 great lockouts, most of the track is under shade.
C.
Great walk and amazing views, one of the best that is close to auckland, the summit is absolutely amazing, bit of a far drive from auckland but worth it.
P.
Stunning hike, especially on a day when you get to enjoy all the views.
