Reviews of A. H. Reed Memorial Kauri Park
T.
Oh we love this place. We had a great time. There will be no entrance. It’s free and it’s beautiful place walk around. The Giant kauri tree is stunning!! The surroundings has a very good vibe and it’s a perfect place to go to if you like to walk with kids or have some yoga near the river or just sit down and meditate. Highly recommended!!
J.
A beautiful forest walk. Lots of people enjoying the lovely weather, including some with their dogs in a no-dogs area.
A bit steep on the north end, but manageable with lots of well-maintained stairs.
I'm definitely planning on coming back regularly to enjoy the high boardwalk next to a couple of giant Kauri.
It could probably benefit from a second set of bathrooms near the popular swimming area to help alleviate the terrible smells along parts of the shore.
M.
Great bush walks 20 min to an hour and board walks through kauri tree forest amd can see waterfalls too.
B.
Awesome walk through native bush. Great being so close to the town. Spectacular being able to walk through the huge trees, especially huge Kauri trees where you feel very small. Amazing place. Well worth a visit to wander around
G.
Absolutely beautiful place, easily one of my favorites. Awesome peaceful feeling, always people around, space for overnight freedom camping in vehicles.
Swimming holes and walking tracks galore.
R.
Well maintained paths and boardwalks, nice bush beautiful creek with a swimming hole, if you an find it.
K.
AH Reed Memorial Park is definitely a great place to visit with your family and friends together. I had a great walk in this beautiful park. There are some beautiful sections of historic trees and native plants of New Zealand heritage to see. It's a park for everyone to enjoy and I really recommend this place to visit.
D.
Awesome and well preserved park with heaps of old kaori trees. It's amazing how being so close to the road you can absolutely isolate yourself in the deep green bush. Crossing the bridge across the stream was the part I enjoyed the most. Loose yourself in this jungle, highly recommended.
K.
A very pretty boardwalk through natural forest and Kauri trees, but even better, a fabulous short hike to Whangarei Falls through flower filled fields, over a swingbridge through a Redwood grove and along a very pretty stream. This was my favourite walk in Whangarei and much better than driving to the concrete car park and looking at the falls from above. A very well kept local secret
A.
Great short walk to admire these iconic trees and bush. So close to town. And as a stepping off point for a beautiful walk up the river to the base of the Whangarei Falls. Like walking into a painting...
M.
Such a beautiful place to hike. We hiked to the waterfalls and it was an easy hike. Nicely maintained trail and very shady.
T.
Lovely park to walk with the family! Public toilets, safe railing and plenty of parking.
J.
Great place for short bush walks for kids with waterfalls and kauri trees, plus longer walks . Has toilets and well formed tracks.
R.
AH Reed park is great for the family. A flat walk which is great for all levels. Well maintained track. Has toilets parking. And if you walk to the end there's a waterfall.
C.
Small but spectacular forest park. Easy walk for kids, and has some beautiful kauri trees. The treetop canopy walk is lovely. We did the walk to the waterfalls (30 mins return), and then did the 30 min walk up the Whangarei Falls, which was also beautiful. You can either return on the same path or continue the loop (30-45 mins).
R.
There are multiple carparks that surround this park, we arrived at the one which has the small loop canopy track of 15 minutes. A nice quiet walk that is suitable for people of all fitness levels. Not accessible for wheelchairs due to mandatory foot cleaning stations due to Kauri disease
J.
Very nice scenery on walk, lots to look at but some of railing by kauri tree area is starting to look like it needs some maintenanc metal ect and there is some undermining starting to accure on another part of the walk way
A.
Really nice walking park with a few great Kauri trees. Not exactly a treetop canopy walk if that's what you're looking for though.
D.
What a treasure! Nice little walk thru some beautiful bush and so close to the city.
I.
Quiet calm walking through forest on a very well maintained track by the side of a burbling stream and past waterfalls.
T.
Awesome Bush walk and if you end up getting hot there's a water hole that will cool you down ASAP
S.
Awesome short walk for a family with small children, my 1.5year old could walk most of the way and 3 year old could the whole way...
Such a beautiful place..
M.
This memorial park offers public a taste of secondary growth bush in NZ with two large ish kauri trees to view & touch. Be sure to use the shoe cleaning equipment to ensure you do your bit to help prevent kauri die back disease.
There's a (graffitied) map that gives directions and times for the various walking tracks.
We enjoyed a lovely 15 minute loop that included a short board walk section around the kauri trees. Enter the bush at the carpark and turn right at the fork to have this experience.
The surface of the path is rough and includes rocks, making this wee excursion unsuitable for wheelchair or stroller.
There are toilets at the start of the walk. The small bitumen sealed carpark has parking for around max of 14 vehicles. There is not enough room for large campervans or RV's or anything towing a trailer.
J.
Beautiful walk - very clean and environmentally friendly walkway.
F.
Beautiful walk, well maintained by DOC. Don't miss the mighty Kauri trees and please don't take your dogs with you as there are kiwis here. I mean the bird and not the people :) . If you're lucky you may some kiwi during the night walks.
R.
Awesome. Feels so good to walk between trees... not just trees but years and years old Kauri Trees.
D.
Nice park with walks to Whangarei Falls. Worth a visit for all the family.
M.
A beautiful forest and nice walk, not too difficult. Various tracks for different abilities including wheelchair accessible. Canopy boardwalk is easy or walk up to Paranui Falls or drive to top and walk down. Falls viewable from top with only a 2 minute walk from carpark
K.
Very beautiful and take my hat off to all that have built those tracks, brilliant. Thank you
A.
Great easy walk approx 30 mins to the base of Whangarei Falls
L.
Great walk although part of the loop track was closed. Public toilets located just in the main carpark. Kauri dieback washing stations are in place so make sure that you use them to prevent the spread of Kauri dieback. Also, be sure to stay on the designated track to prevent spread of Kauri dieback.
I.
Beautiful walk in the morning - plenty of shaded areas to take a stroll that leads to the Whangarei Falls.
J.
Awesome walk. Great views. Swimming hole too. You can walk to whangarei falls
L.
Big green energy. Easy access walking paths beautiful country
K.
A great loop walk that i highly recommend you do of your in the area.
M.
Beautiful park with Kauri trees 5mins drive from Whangarei
T.
Lovely short walk between native trees, worth going in all sorts of weather!
C.
It's a beautiful area. Great chance to see a good range of native trees. The tracks are being upgraded especially since the flooding. The track is open to the Whangarei Falls.
R.
This is a really beautiful walk to see the native flora and fauna of new zealand. There's a huge range of native trees, shrubs and ferns as well as many birds and insects. The stream dries up a bit in summer but after some rain is really gorgeous
A.
First time visit by our whanau katoa. Absolute hidden gem. Parking is a problem but a must for nature-lovers and those interested in researching natural rongoa.
Z.
Amazing park with waterfall, old trees, bridge, full of peace and calm
R.
I walk here most mornings lots of pics to share!!
S.
Great canopy walk over stream valley. Nice walk up to waterfall too. Shame the river isn't really 100% safely clean to swim in as good water hole with swing. Note, don't leave valuables in car.
A.
Good walk. Highly recommended.
However, suggestions for council. If you can label the trees so to educate what they are (obviously we know which ones are old kauri trees), but we are just confused how a young kauri looks like and what the other big trees are. Hard for a parent who is not a botanist...
S.
Stunning walk with a tranquil trail that leads to the Whangarei Falls. A solid boardwalk leads you along the canopy for a new perspective of the forest. Have visited a few times and always enjoy it.
J.
Lovely place for a bush walk. We enjoyed it very much. Good parking at several sites.
T.
Must visit if you want easy access to admiring Kauri trees.
N.
Lovely walk, tranquil feeling & not realizing the native, medicinal trees that our kaumatuas & Kuia's use to help heal our ill people 🙏 Ataahua 😇
L.
Perfect walking, strolling or hiking park. Lots of steps. And easier sections. Nice bush cover and at times a running stream. Can walk thru to Whangarei Falls.
M.
One of the best bush tracks in Whangarei, short enough for kids to experience nature at its finest and the boardwalk through the canopies is fantastic!
B.
Cool tracks, amazing walk and water fall love it
R.
This is a good stop on the Hatea River Walk or a destination in itself. It has 3 entrances for varying levels of fitness and access. All paths are good walking parths with well maintained wide tracks. Walk from the carpark (clean and tidy toilets at entrance) for a gentle up hill climb to Kauri Canopy walk. If you have strollers/ limited mobility or wheel chairs go to the second carpark up the hill (2 disabled parks) to walk amongst the tree tops. Really special to be so close to Kauri trees without risking damage. You can carry on for another 10 minutes walking to the.waterfall or drive to the 3rd carpark on Clapham road to see Mckinnon waterfalls. Heard lots of tui and piwakawaka. There are Kauri dieback stations at each entrance - pleademake sure you clean and disinfect you shoes on the way in and out so this can stay a beautiful place.
B.
Lovely peaceful river walk. We did the track to the Whangarei Falls and back. The track is good in all weather and is easy walking
L.
Great walk. If you park at AH Reed car park you can walk to the base of the Whangarei Falls and avoid the steep hill climb. You will have a much longer but flat walk
W.
Loved it, perfect to escape the hot sun
D.
Beautiful peaceful serene walkway 🧡
A.
It's gorgeous. Unlevel in places. Not really much fitness required. Ends with a beautiful waterfall. Also some great swimming spots and lots of bird life x
S.
Great place for a quick scenic, informative and interesting walk through some fantastic NZ Bush inside of Whangarei city. See Kauri and enjoy the shade on a hot day, or have a dip in the fresh water streams.
G.
Amazing place, so much scenery in a little area.
M.
Great little walk underneath the beautiful Kauri trees. The Alexander waterfall wasn't worth the hike up all those stairs.
F.
Well maintained, short walks, ideal for small kids
J.
Fabulous. easy walking beautiful NZ bush.
F.
A very nice park for a walk alone, your family or visitors. When you have guests, here you can show them a kauri tree. Please don't forget to decontaminate your shoes.
M.
Stunning! High bridges winding around giant Kauri trees and over streams. The waterfall is really beautiful too. A must see gem in the Whangarei area.
T.
You can do a small walk or long its an awesome walk either way. KAURI trees streams, climbs.. Amazing
A.
Fantastic walks. Glad to see wdc taking care of the kauri with boot cleaning stations and parking wardens during the summer holidays. Remember to lock it hide it and report it.
S.
Worth walking through the kauri trees
R.
Pretty short walk but beautiful nonetheless! Canopy walk was a treat.
A.
Awesome place for a one night camp with great walk in the morning to the falls. Clean facilities, met nice people on our early morning walk along the river.
R.
Good scenic park and water ways but need some passion and a bit of gear to walk the bikes.... overall not too bad
B.
A great short family friendly walk. No really suitable for buggies / strollers however.
K.
Is a good short bush walk. I used to go for walks through there with my son. We enjoyed it very much.
C.
Great upgrade to tracks new stairs 600 to the top . Great to see the amount of people using them even in May's rain.

(Translated) Beautiful day spent visiting this beautiful park that has the advantage of being very close to the town center.
It offers various things to see .... first of all the beautiful nature that composes made of ferns, trees of various types including kauri, the river and the waterfall Pukenui 24 meters high!
Beautiful then the Canopy Walkway that allows you to walk a few meters from the top of the trees.
Following the path that runs along the river, after 30 minutes it is easy to reach the famous Whangarei Falls.
For those who want to spend a few hours of peace and tranquility in nature this park certainly deserves a visit !!!!

(Translated) Are here in the winter, but the falls are an incredible experience 😍 it is worthwhile in any case to walk along the trail, you have the choice of a 30 minute and a 2 hour walk along the river.
(Original)

(Translated) Frankly not terrible, just fine for a walk in the forest or for a jog. Only the canopy on the suspension bridge is cool.
(Original)
Franchement pas terrible, juste bien pour une ballade en forêt ou pour un footing. Seul la canopé sur le pont suspendus est cool.
D.
(Translated) The big kauri is worth a look and the trails are great. Pay attention to the construction of the Sand Road. Go back to the big kauri and go back to the park. The road is not very good, and it is easy to enter the construction area and enter the private territory or dangerous construction site. Be careful and hike.
(Original)
大kauri值得一看,步道也很棒。注意Sand road在施工,走到大kauri就回头吧,继续走就出公园了,大马路不太好走,而且进入施工区很容易就走错进入私人领地或者危险的工地。要小心谨慎徒步。
T.
(Translated) Super beautifully laid out and accessible for everyone.

(Translated) In a part of the forest there is a walkway to walk among the Kauris of more than 500 years. The park is very nice, if you go to the end you can see a waterfall. There is a bathroom and parking, everything is free.
